Picture Manager Urgently Wanted…….

Dear Members,
For couple of months, we are and still hoping that there will be volunteer to come forward to be the Picture Manager.  But till today, we are still hunting up and down for one.

As of now, many beautiful and colourful photos are still waiting for someone to help them to put into the SHC website so that we still can have wonderful memories when we are looking at these photos later on.

For a Picture Manager, is someone has knowledge of uploading photos onto the website. The role would require the Pictures Manager to receive digital photographs from approved Event Organisers, layout the pictures as per current format, auto correct for brightness and finally uploading the photographs to the SHC website. The Pictures Manager has the right to delete and decide if the photographs are suitable material. No editing task will be required in this role. To enable photographs to be published, the rules of SHC will apply. For continuity, and if you feel you have what it takes to be a Picture Manager, do come forward to volunteer your services.

Not sure that if we are able to provide any training for this role as King Seng (our current Picture Manager) had stepped down as he was not feeling too well lately and had requested that he relinquished this duties.

So any interested members and keen to take up this role, we need you…..

Looking forward to hear from you.

Appointment of Robert Ong in the role of “New members Relations”

We have always faced difficulties getting new members to introduce themselves in the Club.  Either they are shy, or they find it difficult to write an introduction about themselves in our Club forum.  Finally, they either not do anything about it or nobody knows about them.

We have tried to get our senior members to to take up this role; but unfortunately for numerous reasons, few members like to take up this role.  Well, after a long time, we have identified one.

He is Robert Ong, whom many of you know has been active, especially with the Easterly gatherings.  He is a strong supporter of SHC, its members and the Club’s culture.  Robert has good relations, is tactful and is a very considerate person.  He has agreed to take up the role of managing “New members relations”.  In this role, Robert will assist new members with introducing themselves to fellow members in the Club.  He will be able to write a new Post to introduce new members in the Club.  After membership approval by Admin, new members can write directly to him with the introduction.  More details will be given.

Thank you Robert.  And we look forward to your new initiatives.

SilverHairsClub adopting the true kampong spirit

balik kampong

I was reading the ST today, and came across the phrase “the true kampong spirit”.  I thought that this tagline is interesting for SilverHairsClub members.  Very often, we engage in activities of the social nature, and we don’t target “self help and caring activities” for ourselves.  We have plenty on makan, dancing, karaoke, cycling, walking, chitchats and travel.

As a Club, we have not done much to harness ourselves for the benefit of SHCians as a whole.  Maybe the “true kampong spirit” can rekindle and strengthen ourselves as a big family.  I remembered Kenneth Tan suggested buying in bulk eg his monthly ovaltine supply, Jassmine Teo’s Teo selling of what’s in our store room, our offering of paid eldersitter services by some of our members, our discussion on retirement living, plus a few others.  But many of us have not responded to work together in this true kampong spirit.

Perhaps, we can help and think of new ideas.  We should support more activities and programs so that we can help ourselves as we age.  Afterall, many of us are reported as “Asset-poor and cash-rich”.

How and what can we group together and care for ourselves?  Please respect the views of others when making comments.  Not all of us are rich, and not all of us are poor.  Not all of us can travel, makan and enjoy ourselves frequently, many of us have still to work.

Free tickets to Flower Dome + Cloud Forest in Gardens by the Bay

I have a pair of tickets to the above attractions valid till 8 Dec 2013. If you need it, I can pass it on.

Myanmar Travel Group: Thank you very much for the sharing. I am glad that you all are having so much fun. I wish I can join you all, but still have a full-time job and can travel only during certain periods of the year.

We are back home, safe and sound from Yangon!

This trip is the beginning of my love story with SHC travelling group.  We had so much fun, laughter, food, entertainment and dancing throughout the short trip.  I’m sure most of my fellow travellers will agree with me.

We have to thank the following people who had made this possible –

  • Terence for initiating and leading the group;

  • Susan for making the hotel arrangements and rooming list

  • Peri for looking after the financial aspects

  • Gentlemen for their tender loving care in looking after the ladies

  • Frisna for providing free entertainment on board

  • And any other SHC’cian who had in one way or another contributed to the success and smooth running of the tour.
  • Last but not least, all the supportive ‘seow seow’ audience who were so receptive to all kinds of jokes, Q & A grilling by our infamous reporter from CNA, CNN to CBS, without whom, we would not have had so much enjoyment during the trip!

A comical star was born on 8 November 2013, Day 3 of the trip.  It was spontaneous and so hilarious that we all almost died laughing so hard and many can’t stop laughing even after the show ended.  So, fellow travellers, please share your experience with everyone here.

I’m looking forward to the next trip led by Terence, either to Taiwan, India or Sri Lanka.  Have passport and money will travel !

When the going gets tough…….

Life has a strange way of throwing challenges at us.

When we put in our effort, it does not mean we will be rewarded with a kind word, let alone appreciation.  When we ask questions, lo and behold, we are creating issues that should not happen in the first place.  Huh? Whaaa?  Hmmmm……..

How do we deal with such challenges?  For me, I speak up (even if it’s the last time; till death do us part.  Kekekeee), after which I move on and happily continue with my life.

So, darlings, when the going reeli, reeli gets tough, THE TOUGH GETS GOING!

Share with us, especially Agony Aunt G here, how do you deal with challenges that somehow makes you the bad guy?

Why do we fall in love?

lover       lover1

I am in KL, and obviously beside eating, I had nothing else better to do. I usually go to the 7-Eleven and buy all the local newspapers I can lay my hands on.

The article this morning reported that an anthropologist has identified that the answer lies in brain chemistry. She tracked 28,000 people.  Some of us feel good and romantic; and have the sexual drive, and all this because of dopamine and testosterone

In our Club, I read only Tian Soo is familiar with this chemical.

Why do some of us like this person and not another person?  As you know, I like to make Paper Clips work, but trying to do so, does not seem to work.  The naturally attraction works, but the individuals must come together.

If a person has active dopamine, tend to seek experience, curious and easily board, they tend to be introspective and like their own type.

If a person has high testerone, they tend to be analytical, competitive, they too tend to be attracted to their types.

These factors sparked attraction. The success is to overlook everything you cannot stand in someone.  These works whether one is 30 or 60.

What do you think?  Aiyah, just some serious fun.

the beauty of a variety of blooms;
bring to you, a sense of calm and rest!

We will transverse along the coastline from man-made boardwalk into the

underground bunkers and gun batteries from WW II.

The surrounding area projects peace and solitude that brings a sense of
relief and thankfulness that the guns had ceased fire long ago and battles
are no longer fought!        {sigh}

The sight of artists capturing the gorgeous views over the sea;
fishermen preparing their fishing baits or trying their luck,
families and friends enjoying, yet another natural oasis.

With a panoramic view, it is indeed “THE place to watch sunset!”

Let us linger for a moment along the coastal front, be soothed, be lulled by
the wonders of nature and revel in this scenic view of vast sea and greenery…

Dine & Home Sweet Home will be in the Nature Reserve itself – Eco Gourmet Cafe comes highly recommended OR next to Labrador MRT (CC27) Alexandra Retail Centre(ARC) with a selection of Japanese/Chinese restaurants; Komala’s, cafes, etc

Tentatively 15 or 16 Nov – Ideas on “How we can move and mix around at a buffet restaurant?”

How can members mix around at a buffet restaurant?

It’s always a battle.  When we gather together, we all love to plong ourselves on a chair. Then, we don’t move for the next 2-3 hours.  And then members complain we should move around because we are not mixing around.  Then, we have introductions, games, and members feel they have no time to network.

I like an “All standing gathering” with a drink on the left hand and some snacks on serving tables. We keep our right hand for shaking hands. But then, we complain the legs are just not that strong. “Why no chairs?”

At Hans restaurant, some tables are long, and we don’t know who to talk with, on the right or on the left.  Some tables are small, and we squeeze and again, we don’t move.

dining in a buffet restaurant

What about a buffet restaurant?  If we go for a buffet lunch or dinner, and we sit down in tables of four, how are we going to mix and network.  At the end of the gathering, we go home knowing 3 persons, and not knowing the others.  What can we do?

SilverHairs love to make friends.  Don’t have to go into the why’s. How do we mix and network at monthly gatherings and still get to know a good number of other members?

There is always a spread of food on the serving table.  Nowadays, the restaurants serve ah la cart buffet or order as you like.  And, each of us get our own plates, bowl and fork and spoon.  Can we move ourselves, say every 30 mins?  The EO can “ting a glass” and time to move.  Those who don’t want to move can sit still; others can move.  We do it 3 times, and in 2 hours, we get to meet a new set of friends.

What do you think?  Do you have ideas?

EC event – Play about Love (Sat, 19 Oct 2013, 3pm to 4.30pm)

Dear all

The Ageless Theatre presents Faces (Phases) of Love, a play about the power of love and the search for that special someone. It comprises four short skits, including one about a lonely widow’s love for her deceased husband, and another about four mahjong buddies reminiscing about love and loss.

The venue is the Marine Parade Community Club Theatrette. Each ticket costs $15. As contact numbers of the organisers cannot be displayed here, if you wish to join a couple of us for this performance, you may transfer funds to my POSB Savings Account 159-13164-5 and I can purchase the tickets on your behalf.

What is interesting is that the Ageless Theatre comprises people aged 43 and above.

Any play enthusiasts?

Be it cancer of the lungs, colon, postrate, nose, skin, or smach, the sickness is dreaded and feared.  If treatment is treated early, the cances of a cure is high; if detected late, it’s along process of treatment, and a stress to the care-giver. It is also expensive.

What have you experienced, seen or done when you knopw of someone who has cancer. Which hospital did you go? What were your medication? Which foreign country did the person go to for treatment? What herbs or plants were tried? How much was spend? What kind of government support was available?

Share your experience so that others can learn from you. We are all getting old. Your sharing can be useful information to  other members.

Yangon trip – Looking urgently for a lady to replace.

Hi Friends,

Due to some circumstances, I am unable to go for the Yangon trip schedule from 6-10 November 2013. Number of confirmed persons going including myself is 21.

It is a twin room sharing with another lady. I have already purchased my air ticket with jetstar worth $164.60. It is transferrable and I am selling it for only $50. You would have to pay the difference between the current ticket price and the amount I purchased ($164.60) plus a transfer fee of about $50.

If you are keen on going for this trip, kindly email me at eunice.tay.bg@gmail.com for more details.

Thanks & Regards

Every Thurs 3-5pm for 12 weeks Follow-up on the Digital Divide (Ref: Post 11/9/2013)

“There are three kinds of seniors … those who know IT and enjoy every minute of it. Those who understand what IT are about but do not know the good and bad about IT and the Internet. I call this group as “driving blindly through the Internet” and many have got their fingers burnt. This is the second kind. The third kind of seniors is those who heard about the usefulness of IT and the smart devices (smartphones, tablets), never use the Internet and do not know how or where to start.”

I propose now with my limited resource and budget, to start, in a small way, and make a difference to the third kind of seniors. For those first and second kinds of seniors, if you have any friend interested and willing to take the challenge, do let them know.

The details …

Time: 3PM to 5PM
Place of Learning: HDB void deck (in vicinity of Telok Blangah).

Silver Writing……………

May be some of the senior folks here will be interested in this:

Silver Writing

If yes, please check out the details at their website (www.theartshouse.com.sg) or call their hotline number (Tel: 6332 6919) to register for it etc…….

I have NO vested interest in this and neither have the time yet to go for this course…….

But thot that some senior folks here can kill some of their boring time with it…….lolzzzz!

Cheers!
