Calling all nature lovers and those who want escape from the hustle and bustle of city life
in Singapore:
Come, join us,,,, stroll back to the 60s… leave all cares behind.
Let this island’s natural and rustic charm soothes your soul!                  emoticon

Our walk will take us all the way to Chek Jawa; Walking under the swaying coconut palms, lush
greenery, birds, through “country’ roads where the air is fresh.
Chek Jawa one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems!
Apparently, on 9April, in the morning the tide is low, hopefully it is low enough and unveils
the marine life there.

Our walk ends once we are back to Ubin town centre.
Do not leave Ubin without feasting on some seafood which is fresh and prices are reasonable.

When you have rested, feasted and recharged, you may go to explore the nearby Sensory Trail –
a small garden with fruit trees, spices and herbs for cooking, applants used in traditional
medicine and native plants of the mangrove forest.

NOTE
Bring poncho, hat, insect repellent, binocular and camera.  Country roads might be slippery,
shoes or track shoes are strongly recommended.  No slippers/sandals as they are also an
open invitation to insects/mosquitoes.

1.  Walk single file when road is narrow, Always keep to the left side of the road. Do not
wander off or lag behind, stay with the group!
2.  Bring your own drinking water.  Water from public toilets and wells is not suitable for
drinking or bathing. As lunch might be late for some, bring snacks but no littering.
3.  Avoid feeding, touching, harassing or capturing any wild animal.
4.  Hornets and wild bees are potentially dangerous when disturbed – stay clear of any nest
or hive and report its location to the National Parks Board immediately.

EOs for this walk :  Veronica Wong and Mary Tan

Join us for the walk from Woodlands MRT, into Admiralty Park towards Woodlands Waterfront.     Located in the north western corner of Singapore, Admiralty Park, a national park in Woodlands, offers both nature and recreational facilities.  Sungei Cina once used to run through the park but it has been diverted for the construction of the park. Much of the park is mangrove swamp.    We will walk one of the boardwalks which is within the mangrove forest, follow along a nature trail and enjoy its rustic surroundings.
Leaving Admiralty Park, we arrive at the entrance to Woodlands Waterfront which was launched in May this year.  Once a laid-back coastal area where a stretch of warehouses used to be, the area now offers a variety of recreational opportunities for people of all ages   The coastal park and waterfront promenade has four distinctive areas – the waterfront picnic green, event plaza, playground and jetty walk.   Overlooking the Straits of Johor, the refurbished jetty measuring about 400m long and about 12m wide, is one of the longest coastal jetties in Singapore.   Enjoy a breezy stroll along the jetty walk and take in the beautiful sea view.
After the jetty walk, walking back along the main Admiralty Road West we take bus service no 856 to Woodlands bus interchange/MRT station.   For those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Mega Food Mall, 5th level or the Banquet, 7th level in Causeway Point.
Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

Monthly walk – Bedok Reservoir, Sat 11Sep

(This posting is on behalf of Serene as she is unable to get the post up).

Date: 11 September 2010 (Saturday)

Meeting Place: Bedok Reservoir Park – The Entrance (Opposite the condo “Aquarius by the Park)

Start Time: 4.30pm

Duration: about 1-2 hours

Bus #s: 5, 21, 22, 59, 65, 66, 228, 506

EO for this walk: Serene Low

The walk will begin from the Entrance to the Park, covering the whole circumference of the reservoir and part of the Bedok Park Connector.

From the entrance, the landscape garden has many species of flowers and plants and is a popular spot for exercise and strollers with children.

Walking from the entrance towards the water venture jetty, you will see the area here abuzz with teenagers and young adults getting ready for water canoeing.  Further down the pathway, the fixtures of Forest Adventure from tight rope tracks to planks hang across the trunks of trees.

Joggers, brisk walkers and cyclists cover the tracks round the reservoir.  Walking past the Jetty Walkway and back to the Entrance would have taken us around an hour.

Here we can take a short breather before continuing to walk along the Bedok Park Connector towards Bedok Road where all the good food is.  You can see the MRT track from here and walk towards this after your dinner.

Except for the unpredictable weather, it would be an enjoyable afternoon for the walk along trees, reservoir, canal and the clear sky.

Hope to see all of you.         emoticon

Monthly Walk Saturday 8 May 2010 – Sembawang Park/Bottle Tree Village

Meeting Place: Sembawang MRT nearby control station by 4.15pm sharp

Duration:  about 1½ hours

For those who are driving, park at Car Park 2 near the front entrance of Sembawang Park.    Be there at 4.45pm to join group who will be arriving by bus from Sembawang Bus Interchange.

EOs for this walk :  Veronica Wong and Mary Tan

This is a straight forward walk, may not be the "cup of tea" for the adventurous.  The main objective is to enjoy the camaraderie.

Sembawang Park  situated in the north of Singapore is one of the few parks in Singapore with a natural beach, the Wak Hassan Beach.  A good hangout away from busy city life, for picnic or simply relax and enjoy the kampong ambience.  At the park entrance is the distinctive blue dice design.   We will take a leisure stroll at this park and explore the greenery of the park.
The Bottle Tree Village located rather away from the main road at the end of Jalan Mempurong, is another ulu ulu place where you get to see  Bottle Trees which had been imported from Australia by the owners.   Apart from the unique trees, other Australian flora can be spotted in the surroundings.  Andrew Avenue leading to this place, is a secluded road and surrounded by trees.   On the way, we will come across the Preserved Heritage Melayu Penempatan Mosque which was built in the1970s.  At the end of the road,  we will emerge into the Bottle Tree Village, a well established rustic village-like place.  There, we could look across the wide and vast sea of the Straits of Johore and enjoy the sea breeze.
Walk continues through the Simpang Kiri Park Connector which runs along Sungei Simpang Kiri, rich in natural vegetations on both sides of the riverbanks.  Enjoy a tranquil experience and try spotting the vast varieties of birds, ranging from water birds like the Kingfisher, Egrets and Water Hens to seasonal migratory birds such as sandpipers.  We will end the walk at Canberra Link to take Bus No 882 back to Sembawang Bus Interchange / MRT station.  Those who drive will take Bus No 882 from across the road  to Car Park 2 to collect their cars.  For those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the many eateries in Sun Plaza.
Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

Pipe Line Ramble X-treme! Sat, 10 Apr.

(This post was written by Jeffrey)

Date: 10 April 2010 (Saturday)

Start Time: 9 am (approx 9 hours)

Meeting point: Woodland Town Centre, plaza between Blocks 2A and 4A (end point of Pipe Line Ramble 4)

Getting there:
by MRT – Marsiling MRT Station (about 1 km walk)
by Bus – Bus service nos 170, 856, 903, 911, 912

Leaders: Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan

For those who have done part or all of the Pipe Lime ramble series, this is for the masochist in us. The Pipe Line Ramble X-treme is a 4-in-1 combination of the four walks. Total distance is about 25 km walking through a variety of ground from pavement, parks, scrub land, grassland, forest, people’s backyard and of course on the pipe line at certain sections, if you are so inclined. The terrain at parts will be hilly with a few streams to cross and a few walls to climb too.

There will be a lunch stop around Turf City or Sixth Avenue. We’ll play it by ear on that day exactly where.

The walk will end at Pearl’s Hill around 5 or 6 pm. From there we can adjourn to Keong Siak Street for dinner at the either of the famous zhi char restaurants, Kok Sen or Tong Ah to put back all the calories we burnt that day!

The walk will be quite rigorous and be prepared. Wear trekking shoes, if you have otherwise make sure that what you’re wearing gives good traction on uneven ground. Also make sure you are comfortable with walking for 9 hours at a sustained brisk pace before signing up.

The Ulu Pandan Park Connector was completed in Oct/Nov 2009.  This

a canal – Sungei Ulu Pandan canal, that flows into a river – Sungei Pandan.

Do look up among the trees and shrubs; you would probably behold colorful   emoticon
birds eg., the magnificent Purple Neck Heron, Kingfishers, Red-Capped
Woodpeckers or the White Egret; butterflies flitting among the greenery.

The walkway is well paved and most part of the canal route is generally well
shaded.  It also leads towards the Ayer-Rajah Expressway (AYE) where we
will cross a bridge which was a portion of an abandoned railway.

The Dairy Farm Nature Park officially opened on 5 September 2009 has two sections.  One trail leads to the Wallace Education Centre and the other goes to the Singapore Quarry.  For this walk, we are taking the nature trail leading to the Wallace Education Centre.   It is the old Dairy Farm Road and fairly easy.

Formerly a cowshed, the building that is now the Wallace Education Centre also serves as a exhibition and learning facility for nature enthusiasts to meet and share their knowledge with others. The building is a nice example of architectural conservation where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Walk ends back at Car Park A and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Koufu Food Court in West Mall. There are stalls serving fried hokkien mee, pasta, Japanese cuisine, Indian food, vegetarian, yong tow foo mee, herbal soup, duck rice kway chap, fish soup, Korean food, roasted delight, tim sum, fresh fruits, juices, dessert and beverages.

September 12’09 Monthly Walk – Kembangan MRT to Bedok Jetty / Bougainvilla Garden

by Serene Low / Joyce Tan in SHC main bulletin, Walking
Date: 12 September 2009 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Kembangan MRT control station
Start Time: 4.30pm
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and Joyce Tan

The walk from the MRT would be along the canal of Frankel Estate and St. Patrick Secondary School towards the overhead bridge that connects Marine Parade Estate to the East Coast Park Beach.

Along the beach, you will see lots of picnickers, cyclists, joggers and roller skaters; you will feel the sea breeze, the ships lining up at the horizon and the richness of green matured trees giving us shades. Further down the walk, you will reach the activities section like the Cable Ski Park, the Skateboard Park, the anglers at the jetty.  Looking towards inland, you will see the skyline of East Coast with the many condominiums, HDB flats and the city front.

We can walk a little further down to see the Bougainvillea garden with many colors of the flowers.  You may take notes on how you can grow the plant by transplant on sandy soil and cocoa pits; or if you want a multi color flowering specie, try marcotting the various species on the stems of an anchor plant which could produce the multi-color effects of the Bougainvillea plant.

Walking back towards the ‘East Coast Lagoon Food Village’ try the famous rojak, cuttlefish kangkong, satay beehoon, sambal stingray and many others.  It can be very crowded though.

There is a feeder bus 401 that can take you to Bedok Interchange.  It travels thru part of Marine Parade Road, Siglap Road, New Upper Changi Road and ends at Bedok Interchange.

Do bring along your drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), repellent, sun block, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

August Monthly Walk – Bishan to Peirce Reservoir Boardwalk

Date: 1 August 2009 (Saturday)

Meeting Place: Bishan MRT nearby control station

Start Time: 4.30pm
Duration:  about 1 1/2 hours

EOs for this walk:  Jeffrey Lim and Charles Wee

Bishan to Peirce Reservoir Boardwalk

The walk will be in 2 parts. The first which many of you would be familiar with – Bishan Park, a very easy ‘civilised’ route on paved footpaths but nevertheless pleasant, amongst lots of greenery.

The second part will be across Thomson Road to Peirce Reservoir where we will walk along the water’s edge. The path though will be easy along the board walk with water on one side and forest on the other. The final stage will be through the forest but still along the board walk ending at Old Thomson Road.

Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito
repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.  Note that
while mosquito repellent may be a good general precaution, liberal
doses may drive away insects that you wish to observe!

Walk ends at Old Thomson Road and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Casuarina Road, the famous roti prata or the adjacent zhi char.

See you at the walk!
