Like to be interviewed by ST Lifestyle on your silver lifestyl?

Usually, whenever I get a request from the media, I lose no opportunity to keep SHCians informed.  Some of us love the limelight.  So, if you like to be interviewed, hands up please.

A journalist from Straits Times Life! and LifeStyle is currently working on a story about silver industry businesses, and she thought that she might be able to get some help from our club.

  1. She is interested to find out if we know of some businesses (health, gym, yoga, travel, beauty, sports) that offer special discounts or packages for people 45 and above?
  2. She would also like to interview SHCians who take up such offers.

Yes, anybody?  Some comments from you, and I shall put  you in touch with the journalist.

BUSINESS COLLABORATION

Hi SHCians,

I have been in Auditing and Accounting for the last twenty-five years. After finishing my university, I started my career in India and continued with the same after migrating to Singapore.

Now I am on my own and have some corporate clients, outsourcing to me, accounting, secretarial, corporate taxation,  the financial reports compilation filing with Government agencies and other related matters.

Some of you may be thinking of venturing into business and would like to know which business structure is suitable for incorporation, Pte Ltd company, Partneship, Sole-proprietorship etc.

Many of you are already in business and may be looking for capable person to outsource your accounting, secretarial, corporate taxation, the financial reports compilation filing with Government Agencies and other related matters.

Some other SHCians have business dormant for few years and  may be looking for capable person to close down the business.

If any of you need my services, please do contact me at francisemail@yahoo.com.

An enriching life

Hi All

I believe most of us now welcome the time we have and the opportunity to do things we missed out. I am wondering how to fill my time now with activities that can still allow for new learning or relearning what was forgotten. Some have found their niches, some like me are still looking. I wonder if any who share this view would like to learn new things or teach things/skills they know to other SHCians.

For the time I’m in S’pore I would like to meet members to discuss this with the objective that perhaps we can get together to hold some of these activities at various locations. An example can be hand quilting which I like to learn or even making sushi/dumplings/mooncakes. Other areas can be conversational Japanese, swimming, ebay buying etc. If there are some who can teach these and some who are keen to learn, we can start lessons. Who knows, this can turn out to be business opportunites for some.

Joan

Another idea on education centre

Hi All SHCians

This is an afterthought from an earlier post by Terence on Education centre as a source of income. Just wish to share my thoughts and welcome your views.

From what I read surfing the net, there appears  to be a need for babysitters for toddlers and even afterschool care. I wonder if so, can childminding or afterschool care as a SHC business activity, with the objective of conducting enrichment activities for the children, work? Do you think, among the SHCians, there are some with the experience and interest in getting together to form a parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts playgroup or education centre or and running activities eg teaching EL/CL through songs, rhymes, computer aided learning, guitar playing, dance and drama etc.

If the group is small, we can use our homes. I will volunteer my flat for this as I’m a grandma with a toddler grandson whom I would like to see in a playgroup. I don’t really see this as a moneymaking business, more perhaps as giving assistance to working mums and dads.

Joan

Do you know of a place to hold small talks?

We have always been looking for small places to hold talks.  But very often, the venue does not give us the flexibility or the tools to hold small talks.  Please look around; and if you have some suggestions for a avenue which fits our needs, please raise your hand.

  • Installed equipment included overhead projectors, screens, TV, with notebook connections, internet access (preferably wireless), microphones.
  • Seating capacity of 20 – 40 pax.
  • Very flexible with numbers.  This could be an existing cafe or lounge.
  • Ideally, no charge for the use of the venue.  The venue should have its own F&B.
  • Located close to MRT and public transport.

Know of such a place?  Terence Seah

USEFUL TIPS

I have in mind for members to share a range of useful tips that SHC  members can find useful. No I am not talking about horse racing, soccer tips(which are my areas of interest)

An example is that my mother says when I do the washing I must  be turn the clothing inside out, zippers must be zipped up and buttons unbuttoned. How many of you out there who does not do it this way please own up and share how this advice has proven useful.

I have 3 travel tips to share ; when traveling always take the name card of the hotel when you go out as taxi drivers have a bad habit of sending you to the wrong hotel and then apologise profusely for hearing wrongly. With the card and name of the hotel written in the local language they will have less excuse of doing so.

The other tip when taking the MRT , METRO, MTR , the TUBE or the UNDERGROUND especially if the language is foreign as in France is to look for the end station when changing lines and not look for directions for the station you intend to go to.For example when going to Dover when coming from the airport do not look for directions to Dover but look for directions to Boon Lay,Of course you need a station guide or map as well!

Another tip is to learn a few useful phrases in the local language eg in France "ou er de toilette?(where is the toilet? How much? Where is the —— ?

If you are a sushi fan please take note that certain outlets(not restaurants) offer a 50% discount 30 mins before closing time.

I used to leave my battery in my laptop even when I was using the power plug connection. Now I know that u should remove the battery when using the power connection. You should also drain the battery as much as possible if u use the battery. In this way your battery life will be much longer.

When I find my notes I will share how certain stains are removed.

Members  can also  share survival tips ,camping tips cooking tips, how to get nice phone numbers without paying extra like 93833883 or 96998511,tips on weight reduction, how to stave of the onset of  wrinkles, special diet or healthy food programmes, cosmetic tips, travel tips, foodie tips on where the best is for certain types for certain types of food, how to travel with children, investment tips, business tips, where to get bargains, household tips, how to keep food fresh for a longer period  in the fridge, how to make things last longer, where to buy the best durians or where to get tasteful durians at decent prices, how to cut down your handphone bills when overseas.I cant possibly cover every subject so I leave it to members to create new ideas

Tips can also be negative: how to avoid getting ripped off,how to avoid bad situations, share bad experiences or knowledge of bad experiences so members can avoid falling into the same traps.

One tip when buying a car or something similar make sure before you sign  read the receipt  or contract as to whether it includes the GST or excludesand state so clearly. One conman try to con my friend out of an extra GST payment after the deposit was paid.Luckily she got out of a tight spot when I advise her to call their bluff as the road tax was expiring soon and they backed off.

Let this post also be an avenue for members to get advice on issues not related to friendships and relationships or personal issues.(this we can cover in another agony uncle post that I might initiate soon). So if you have a non personal problem or dilemna you can ask fellow members for advice!Caveat Emptor clause applies…use it at your own discretion.

I hope SHC members are willing to share and sometimes in the process embarass themselves(you can always say you were told by a friend…) and help each other by sharing our wealth of Silverhairs experience.

Illuminate each other with your glow , light the candle  and lift the darkness upon us!

NO MATTER HOW OLD WE ARE WE CAN NEVER STOP LEARNING PEARLS OF WISDOM!

Homestay accomodation in Singapore

Hi SHC members

In the past, I was actually looking for accomodation when I make short trips back to S’pore. I had booked airfare and hotel packages which were pretty cheap then and was like a tourist back in my home country. I therefore knew what it was like to think of short term accomodation when I came back to S’pore as my place was rented out. However, my flat had been vacant for several months and Im thinking of now taking up the opportunity of opening my place for short term stay foryour visiting overseas friends or relatives.

If you have overseas friends or relatives who are looking for short term accomodation in Singapore you can contact me at my email address; joanwong2002@hotmail.com

Forex trading – Group strategy versus the individual investor

Hi all bringing this topic up after a year.

" Hi all SHC members, I have read that in USA it is common for retirees
or housewifes to form a group, so that they can get their hands into
Investing in Stocks, Futures, with the experts in the club providing
good and free advice resulting in good returns. As i have just starting
getting into investiing in stocks , futures, CFDs ,etc, i just wonder
if we can form such a group , so that those who may be Experts can
share their expertise and experience  to help new comers like me.  So
far , i have learned quite a lot from people like Dave and Andrew and i
think they could be others out there who may have just as much as
expertise or more and can help us all.  At the same time,  some who
like me, who are just starting out,  will defintely benefit by learning
from these people.  Of course’ everything is on a good will basis, no
guarantees and everyone is responsible for their own investments, but
talk is free, and knowing more is defintely better in any investments.
At the end of day, it is also a good way to get to know more SHC
members and have something current and of strong interests to talk
about. bringing this topic up again after a year. "

So
after a year it seems now they maybe more like minded people who want
to work and share information to benefit from group effort, strategies,
snergy and wisdom.

But the focus now will be on just Forex.
Why, if you see the changes in price or commodities, rice, oil , gold
and US $ and other currencies,  you should be aware you can lose
money even if you do nothing simply due to inflation.

So
all those who feel they can contribute in some way and at the same time
gain from doing so, let us try and meet and do this.

With
group snergy we can use many tools , and expertise from those who have
experience in other areas like Finance,  TA , fundamentals,
or very specialised areas in banking ,  Japanese
candlesticks,  world financial economics , even history.
Cost of getting better charting tools, Autofx programs, financial
reports can be shared , thus making the group more effective as
compared to a single individual.

I am already in a group
for a year and and can say that it can work , what more if members are
retired experienced investors in their own right.  Those who are
keen to discuss this further can email me for further info.  Open
to all SHC members who are willing to share and contribute effort,
expertise and some time  to operate this as an investment
business.  Cheers

Business project proposal and study

Hi Terence and all ,

In response to your question what is possible in SHC for retirees to continue to be engaged in keeping themselves employed and offer their expertise and experience.

Project Proposal : Supply, Delivery, Installation and Commissioning of Two(2) Weather and Two(2) Air Quality Monitoring Stations in Jambi, Indonesia. Calling Entity National Environment Agency

If there is a company that is willing to finance this project and provide technical expertise, can SHC form a management pool of people to run, co-ordinate the phases from the construction face to the operational phase for 2 years in Indonesia ?

What are your views, consideration and are they people with relevant experience willing to undertake this as a retirement career ?

Travel Club – open discussion

The Travel Club idea has started, with some brilliant ideas from Joan (Perth), Mary (Perth), Ronald Wie (retirement living), KT Wong and EleanorC.

On 4 Jan 2008, KT Wong called a meeting to discuss the idea of a Travel Club.  I think we should take the various ideas further, and openly discuss the different ideas on this forum.  We should discuss the different opportunities here, until one or two solid directions appear on the horizon.  And, we can then put the ideas on a commercial platform.  It is always difficult to move further, after the small group discussions, if participants see no commercial gains.  I feel this project can benefit members who have retired, and would like to get into something financially meaningful, besides enjoying the fun of a Travel Club.

Topics of interests can include:  accommodatioin for incoming travellers, tourist guiding, niche packages, an online Travel Club portal to take reservations, promotions and marketing, participation by SilverHairsClub members, costs, IR opportunities, etc.

Initially, we might get off hand in the discussion, but we will finally find an angle.  So, if you feel you like this discussion topic, and are interesting to participate in the Travel Club, keep joining us on this thread.  For SilverHairs with experience in travel or property rental, please give  us your guidance.  Do you see a business opportunity in a Travel Club?

If you personally have an area you can contribute to the Travel Club, please raise your hand, and make sure we see you.  We are not expecting a free service, although we should be conscious of supply and demand forces.  Let’s start.

* Comments which stray away from the subject may be deleted.  We will close this thread for a consoidation on 31 March 2008.

“Setting up a cafe” meeting, 5 July 2007

I guess we can now take the next active approach towards setting up a cafe or a F&B joint.  To read what other SilverHairs had discussed, read about earlier discussion here.  If, after reading the discussion, and you have a strong interest in setting up a F&B joint, you can join the discussion.

Two SilverHairs Shirley Wong and Daniel Kang have positively indicated tremendous interest.  At the same time, we have Lily Ho, Margaret Cheo, and Andrew Yeung, with previous experience in F&B.  Rene, SB Khoo, Ronald Wi and June have expressed interests to participate.

  • Date:  Thur 5 July 2007.
  • Time:  1900 – 2100 hrs
  • Place:  Raffles MRT (exact place will be informed to participants).

Please note this meeting is not a discussion on the pros and cons of setting up a F&B joint.  The purpose of the meeting is to turn the ideas into fruit.

SilverHairs running small business

Recently, we had Shirley Wong who shared with us her idea of a Hot dog outlet.  Following which, we had supportive feedback from Lily Ho on the different licences, Tim on tenancy agreements and Guest on type of flooring to be used.  Last year, we had a session on small business ideas, and we had participation from 28 members.  Last year, some members ventured into the idea of an internet cafe along Holland Road.

I feel we should keep the small business ideas moving.  As you see from my earlier comments, I am a firm believer that SilverHairs should  continue to maintain their SilverHairs years physically and mentally active, while still able to financially support the many years ahead.

Of course, there are also many SilverHairs who treasure their retired and non-working lives, and would dread the idea of doing any business.  30 years of working is enough.  At the same time, there are business risks, and parting with hard earned money after 45 years can be an equally dreadful idea.  One SHC member with experience in financial accounting for small business wrote to me last year, saying running a F&B cafe is a sure failure.

I am more optimistic.  What do you think?

Cafe at Holland Village

Hi All SHC business minded persons,

There is an internet cafe ,at a good location in Holland Village on offer at $45k negotiable, complete with all current operating internet cafe stuff.etc, 20 computers.  The current rent is $4k, which is good.  Just wondering what to make of this ? Any feedback , insight , or ideas welcome for consideration or just good discussion.  If anyone is considering to find partners to run at as a small cafe, as well as an internet, & games cafe, etc. all suggestions and willing partners welcome.  Maybe a special Beer Brewing corner may be workable too. ? or turn it into a small pub , size is about 1200 sg ft.   However the current lease is for 14 months at this price , good or bad, depends on what you want or can make it with it.

Personal Car for Hire

Hi SHC,

Owning a car is expensive and also especially if it is not used much. As i am retired and am not in need of the car most of the time.  I am offering my car for rent to SHC members and also the service of easy pickup and return around Central MRTs.

I also found out that it is perfectly legal to do, as LTA encourages such a private ownership scheme to rent out their vehicle during weekends.

If anyone has such a need call me or SMS me, and we can discuss the arrangements.

By the way , my car is a Sunny Auto 1.5, Year 1998, so it is about 7.5 years old and is running great.

Cheers, Ronald Wi
