Homestay accomodation in Singapore

Hi SHC members

In the past, I was actually looking for accomodation when I make short trips back to S’pore. I had booked airfare and hotel packages which were pretty cheap then and was like a tourist back in my home country. I therefore knew what it was like to think of short term accomodation when I came back to S’pore as my place was rented out. However, my flat had been vacant for several months and Im thinking of now taking up the opportunity of opening my place for short term stay foryour visiting overseas friends or relatives.

If you have overseas friends or relatives who are looking for short term accomodation in Singapore you can contact me at my email address; joanwong2002@hotmail.com

Mega Abdullah – Profile

Hi SHC members,

I am a retiree, aged 67+, married with 3 grown up children.

I was introduced to the Club by Ron Lai when I met him last Thursday at the Serangoon Garden Country Club during a tea dance.

Worked as a parliamentary reporter in our Parliament for 40+ years and retired 4 years ago.  Still working part time as and when requested when Parliament sits.

Since my retirement, I have started to grow orchids again.   My other hobbies are dancing, cycling, brisk walking, holidaying, etc.  I like to visit places/countries that I have never visited before, as I love to meet people of other nationalities, learn or observe their cultures, etc.

My other passion is tennis which I play at least three times a week.  I have a tennis group and we have been playing for more than 30 years.  If there are veteran SHC members who wish to have a game of tennis with my group, they are most welcome.

Warmest regards

The fun of football, anyone?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone is still playing football anywhere, of course with players our age.  The fun is not only during the game but also after the game when we sit down to debrief and talk about the good shots, good save, etc.   I am sure many of you can recall the heroes of footbal during our time, like Mohtar Dahari, SohChin Aun , Santoh Singh,  Spiderman (goalkeeper), Mohd Nor, etc.  Someone just told me I looked the Kuah Kim Song, that is why the recolletion.  But just for old time talk, did played quite a bit of football  in the 70s and it is a good way to keep fit and have fun too.

Also was on the way home in the evening and I noticed quite a number of football matches going on everywhere.  So was thinking is that is why there is so few man in SHC could more of them still be playing football.  Any of your husbands still playing football, can we meet or join them ?

SHC monthly gathering – Sun, 17 Aug 2008

The August gathering will be a refreshing change.  It will be held on a Sunday early morning.  Some of you obviously have your Sunday morning activity, while for some, a Sunday may be your marketing or house-cleaning day.  But, we have to give this timing a try; and see if it works for most of us.

  • Date: Sunday, 17 Aug 2008.
  • Time: Likely 0700 – 1100 hours
  • Venue:  Not decided yet.  You can and should have a say.  Should be at or near a MRT station.

Please keep this date in your diary.

Fabric Painting cum Pinic at Botanic Garden (Craft Class) – 9 August 2008

Hi SHCian,

  • Date :9/Aug/08    UPDATED
  • Place : Singapore Botanic Garden
  • Time : 4pm to 7Pm
  • Cost/material for shoes or T-shirt: $12.00
  • Those who come for pinic (food only) – $5.00/person

(members are to bring their own T-shirt)

I am going to have a craft class of "Fabric Painting" and am thinking very hard of where can I hold this event.

Added 3 more photos of 1) Black Top, 2) Jean n Black Top n 3) Shoes which can be viewed here – http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y64/lohyks/Karen%20Thio/?albumview=slideshow

Han Cafe is not going to take our nonsense anymore after making so much noise and effecting the other customers dinning in the Cafe ( even with 20 members on the last craft day , we are rather noisy-haha).
I would like to hold this fabric painting class at "Singapore Botanic Garden". While waiting for the "project" to dry , we can chat and have a pinic at the green green grass of land with plenty of fresh air .
Members can have the choice of painting on a pair of shoes , T-shirt or both. I will provide the paints and some accessories for the design on the T-shirt (will advice material cost later).
Those who are interested , please sign into this post  . Members who are not joining in the craft , can come down and join us for the pinic and  we can have our evening chatting away freely.
Cost of the food will be share among the members or I will collect $5 for food and need some of the members to help buy some Yummy food/snacks  for the pinic.
Thanks for your support and please do give me any suggestion if u have for the craft or the pinic.

Karen Thio

Those who are still interested to make the ANgels/Butterfly can come down and join us as well, I still have some stock of the crystal. If members need to re-do their angels from the last class , please bring it along with u.

Walk for Sat, 12 July 08 – HortPark/ HendersonWaves/Mt Faber

Dear SHCians,

Date:  Saturday, 12th July 2008.

Note:  slight change in routine from previous walks ie., a F&E time before  the actual Walk.

A headstart of approx 35mins… Step into a wholesome experience, SouthEast Asia’s 1st 1-stop gardening hub that is recreational, educational… @ HortPark located at  33 Hyderabad Road (off Alexandra Road), just before turning into AYE.

Arrive at:  HortPark Centre @ 3.45pm

(FREE & EASY EXPLORATION ON YOUR OWN, strongly recommended! HortPark is an enclosed area, the paths are easy go & romp). Just watch your time as after HortPark, walk back to Floral Walk where I shall meet all of you at the base of Alexandra Arch – the bridge at 4.30pm).     emoticon

Getting to HortPark:

From HarbourFront NEL Station (NE1) : Buses** available 61, 93, 100, 166, 963

Other Buses**: 51, 97

**Buses will travel along Telok Blangah Road & turn right into Alexandra Road.
Alight at  the 3rd bus-stop (look for the overhead bridge that is White and looks like an opened leaf-like form).  When you alight from the bus, on your left is the Floral Walk, the gateway to HortPark.

For those who love floral/gardens, this will be a wonderful time to feast your eyes on some lovely blooms!  You have 35mins to enjoy a FREE & EASY delightful stroll along paths lined with flowering plants.        emoticon

When you arrive at HortPark, walk PASS the Floral Walk quickly (admire the flowers here later on the way back).  Go direct to the HortPark Centre/Lobby; walk right into the 23 hectare regional park.  There is a collection of 20 theme gardens in this gardening hub.

eg., find out…. why are there used baby cots, prams in the garden?

What is the Skyrise/Vertical Garden?  Where is it?  As you retrace your steps back to HortPark Centre; as you are nearer, on the right is the Skyrise or “Vertical” Garden.

Freshen up   emoticon        head back to the Floral Walk!

Meet  @ the base of the bridge/Alexandra Arch @ 4.30pm (sharp).

Our walk leads across the Alexandra Arch to the Forest walk – the Earth Trail, that offers a some what rugged experience bringing you closer to the wildlife found in the area.

We bring to you this part of the trail (approx 6km)  that provides a seamless link of green, open spaces spanning Telok Blangah Hill Park – Hilltop Walk, once a gathering place for trading communities that flourished in the area in the early 19th century; …… to Henderson Waves, the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore that connects Telok Blangah Hill to Mt Faber; a sanctuary of greenery that was previously not accessible.

At Mt Faber — depends on the time and energy level of the group – whether we shall continue to meander through the slopes OR just spend moments to enjoy the skyline of twinkling lights, ships in calm waters….. Then satisfy our tummy urges at the quieter HarbourFront food court, away from the bustling Vivocity; to continue a pleasant evening of fellowship.

Register here.      :D

OR if you need clarification, drop me an email: chrischan5575@yahoo.com

Stay cool!  Be cool!    emoticon         c ya!

Attending a course in dating business

Hi MaryC, CatherineH, and others who are just as crazy as myself.

This topic follows a comment by MaryC a few days ago, about making crafts for her new "in-laws".  And, when I offer to throw a party, she says we have to find her a groom first.  And, CatherineHo has been asked to be a party organiser too.  Well, like some of us, I too wanted to offer to find MaryC a groom, until this morning.

This morning at 6am, while rushing to catch a flight to Kathmandu, I chance upon the Straits Times, 01 July 2008, Page H20.  And for the first time, I read the advertisement headlined "Establish and manage a dating business".  I think it is organised under WDA.  As I am now at the airport, I could not remember what the course content is like; but it has something to do with establishing and evaluating a dating business.   We had this topic of dating a year back, but did not spring to mind any ideas.

Caught on my mind this morning, that a few of us may be interested to start a dating business for people in Singapore.  You know young people are marrying later; fuzzy, aiyah for many reasons.  The course is, I think, $321 per person, SDF funded.  Anybody, likes to join the course, and see if this is a business in Singapore.  As you know, I am always keen in running projects which seniors can run, with their experience and knowledge.  Hopefully, some thing we can park under Blue Helmet.

Thanks MaryC and Catherine H.  I am aware some of us may find this topic objectional, but hopefully some of us will look at it as something we can do, as a business, as we get older; and influencing our young to start early.
