Ageing together in JB

We are setting up a group for SHC members who have considered or decided on ageing together in JB. This group is not for those who are not ready to consider retiring or are anti the JB area.

We will start as a Whatsapp group, strictly no URL links, copy and paste, videos and pictures. Club rules apply.

Here, the platform would provide participants the opportunity to find other fellow members with similar interests eg:

1. Pooling of maid or domestic help services eg keeping the place tidy and clean and cooking.

2. Sharing of transport or cars, so as to keep mobile.

3. Sharing cost of place of stay, a house or a condo. Rental or purchase.

4. Sharing of day to day marketing and household costs.

5. Plan outdoor trips, to keep in touch with the outside world.

6. Discussion on hospital, doctors, medical services, clinics, nursing, maids and ambulance availability and costs.

7. Rooming needs eg double, single and facilities.

8. How to keep living costs down in JB while ageing together as a group?

9. What the group can do to keep healthy and active?

10. How to help and support one another, in cases of disabilities, difficulty in movement and need to go for medical treatment?

11. Malaysia – my second home as a retirement visa.

If you like to join and meet fellow members on the above topics, contact us at +65 9489 4360.

** Registration closed. Next session: 1 Dec 2019.

Let’s stroll upstream along the river banks to our destination!
We had visited this park a couple of times some years back and had seen portions being boarded up for major refurbishments.

An initiative by PUB was launched in 2006 to transform our waterways into beautiful streams with natural materials, waterscapes; creating spaces for the community to enjoy and increase biodiversity.

Bishan-AMK park was one of the flagship projects under this transformation programme between PUB and NParks.

The park which is located in urban central Singapore was transformed from a concrete canal to having a natural “Kallang River” flowing into and through the park, an immense project never done before.

The park now with lush greenery, grassy lawns, playgrounds, ponds, are all ideal for family picnics and gatherings; fitness enthusiasts cycle or pant along well-maintained tracks, or sit by the banks to see water ripples swirling through natural rocks, exceedingly soothing and therapeutic.

The walk leaving us tired and hungry will culminate with dinner at Teck Ghee Court Food Cente.
From here are buses available to either Bishan or AMK MRT.

Note:
There are not many or few shelters, good to have your brollies.
Water to hydrate on a hot day.
Need energy, bring along a snack.
To breeze along, lighten your load.

Sometimes we have unwanted stuff in our homes, and we want to give it away or sell it off

If you have some items close to your heart which you have kept for many years, but have now found the same items taking up space and looking pretty in a corner or your storeroom, you may like to give them away or sell them off.

Perhaps, some members may like these items. Consider inviting our members to come over at a specific date and time, we can have a look and perhaps take them away or buy them from you.

Simply let me know, a date/time, and we can open the event to members. You can also write a new post to inform the club.

Feel free. This is a great way to know other members, besides keeping your home light and breezy.

Punggol Coastal Walk

Monthly walk: Punggol Coastal Walk

Time : 4.30pm SHARP
Duration: approx. 2.5hours. Distance 5 km
Meeting Place: Punggol Mrt exit A
ECs: Christina Chan with Anna Seet and Charles Wee

This is a very popular route for an easy evening walk suggested by our walkist Anna Seet. The walk takes us along a scenic coastal part of Punggol and a manicured waterway. For those of you who have not been there, it’s an interesting and memorable experience. For others it is always refreshing to see an updated progressive Punggol, and we continue to marvel at how fast the place has evolved and changed.
We commence our walk from Punggol Mrt , walk through Waterway Point towards the made Canal waterway that links two rivers, Ponggol River and Serangoon River. From the Canal we proceed westwards to the Punggol River, strolling along its riverside until we reach Punggol Marina Boatel . Continuing, we trace the northern coastal stretch , walking along a park connector until Coney Island. Nearby there we branch off and walk along another canal heading towards Oasis LRT where we end our walk. Refreshment and/or dinner at a nearby coffee shop awaits you.

Wear comfortable footwear, no slippers/sandals.
Protect oneself with sun screen, sunglasses, caps. And bring along an Umbrella

Monthly Walk : A Rustic Park Experience

Date: Saturday, 8 June 2019

Time: 4.15pm sharp

Meeting Place : Use Exit C from Punggol Mrt Station to Punggol Bus Interchange (Berth 5 Bus Service 84)

Duration: approx 2.5hrs

ECs: Veronica Wong & Mary Tan

Discover the rustic charms of Coney Island or Pulau Serangoon, home to a wide variety of habitats, including coastal forests, grasslands, mangroves, and casuarina woodlands. In keeping with the ideal of environmental sustainability, the signs, seats and even the boardwalk on the island are made from Casuarina timber from uprooted trees. Coney Island Park still feels like a world away from urbanity.

We will walk along the Promenades paved areas to enjoy the views of passing ships and Johor’s shoreline. Take photo at the famous Coney Island gate. Stroll along the earth paths, exploring the forest and mangrove habitats. Opportunities to observe and try spotting wildlife or listen to the chirping of birds. If you encounter any animals, keep a safe distance from them, do avoid approaching them. Do not feed the monkeys, or hold any plastic bag and water bottle when visiting the park. We move on to the beach areas which provide a nice seaside break after sweating out on walking.

Walk will end back at the Western Entrance. For those who wish to have dinner, there are eateries at the nearby Punggol Settlement.

Tips to prepare for a safe and enjoyable walk ………………..
Dress comfortably, advisable to wear long pants and covered walking shoes; bring drinking water to stay hydrated; wear a hat, put on sunglasses and apply sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun; apply insect repellent if you are prone to insect bites; bring umbrella or raincoat.

Walk Team: ChristinA Chan, Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Azhari Cuttilan and Linda Chua

Retirement evaluation trip to Khao Yai 18-21 Jul 2019

Khao Yai, known globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 2 hours north east of Bangkok.

I am organising a trip to Khao Yai in July 2019. For this trip, I have asked Bernard, a Singaporean, who has retired and settled down in the Khao Yai area with his Thai wife Nicky. The couple owns a fresh corn-on-the-cob business. They enjoy farming, tissue culture and agriculture related activities. Bernard enjoys his retirement at Khao Yai. This is an opportunity to hear from a fellow Singaporean.

Khao Yai is known for it’s greenery, fruits, grapes, wineries, mountains, fresh air, open space, cows, hiking tracks, relaxing country side environment and resorts.

The trip will start from Donmuang or Suvarnabhumi airports and will depart to Khao Yai, approx 2 hours in 9 seater vans. The return leg will be to the same airport. Note: this is raining season and a good time to enjoy being wet.

The trip objective is to evaluate Khao Yai on short term retirement, while for others, a few days of fresh air and friendly company. Both Bernard and Nicky will share with us what life is like at Khao Yai, what it costs to stay here and what activities we can pick up in the part of Thailand.

If you are looking at stay up to 1 year in Thailand, come join the trip.

Interested, please sign your name here. You may withdraw if the final dates are not suitable. Group limited to 30 pax.

    Moving on with Paperclips

    Hi Paperclips members,

It has always been my hope that Silverhairs members are able to find like-minded friends. Since the club started in 2005, our activities are generally participated by about 80% females and 20% males. However the Club itself has registered about 60% females and 40% males. The question has always been why the inbalance.

As we get older, especially after leaving full time work, our colleagues carry on their lives. Nowadays, many senior club members find that our children are having their own family life. And for some, they leave the nest home. For others, our spouses leave us naturally, either through a divorce or to another world.

At some time, we are all left alone, with an empty apartment, no one to have lunch and dinner with. We have time to travel, but we are unable to find someone with common interest. Obviously, no one to chat, go out with, hold hands together, go to a cinema together or travel to nearby Penang together.

Very often, we then try to keep busy. Spend time with grandchildren. Watch Korean movie or roam Changi Jewel alone. Better still, some find our local kopitiam a place where we can debate the budget or find out more about CPF life from neighbours.

I had hope that SilverHairsClub will be a platform for members to find new friends. Today, I read an article in Channel News Asea on dating apps. I guess the article suits the 25-35 age group. But I believe the dating apps suits single SilverHairsClub members. The Paperclips program is for singles only. Plse read the article below.

I plan to be in Spore in May, and am thinking of having the next monthly gathering with the topic “Dating for SilverHairs”.

For members planning to join the mthly gathering, the date will likely be 13-18 May 2019.

If you like to speak on this topic, please contact me at 9489-4360.

This is not a walk in the park ….. this is an Adventure you may not want
    to miss!

Let’s get closer to nature.. C’mon on, strap on a good pair of hiking shoes!

We will trek through some overgrowth, hike Uphill, to visit site(s) that once
    even had disappeared from the maps of Singapore for more than 60years;
    was rediscovered, yet hidden.

    Note:
1st leg of this walk — depends much on the weather.
Should there be heavy rain on Friday, we might need to “change” route
as it might be too slippery to hike uphill & down.

IF above happens then will walk only the 2nd leg…. m still thinking :)

To avoid confusion, meeting place (**) shall remain unchanged.
IF you are not sure of the location of the meeting place, ASK early.

    Strongly recommend:

    1. wear long pants, covered shoes with ankle socks unless you wish to
      get bites.
    2. Hiking poles — it helps as there ain’t railings or anything to hold
    3. Brollies, caps and bottle of water to stay hydrated.

As we might end at 2pm, I will provide a small snack.

Walk Team: Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Azhari
Cuttilan, Linda Chua and ChristinA Chan…. signing off!

Kindly put your name down soonest! Thank you!
