Our Wish for SHC in 2014

2013 has obviously been a highly eventful year for SHC with many activities and a successful Taipei Night. Yet reading some of the blog posts during the last couple of months has been rather disappointing and we might even say downright depressing.

Since an informal committee of some form was formed around August 2013, the blog posts have revealed that one committee member has offered her resignation and evenly publicly advertised for a replacement, another committee member has been openly castigated for her comments by the Chairman ( which in all honesty we are still at a loss as to what those comments were all about).

Meanwhile we are also being entertained by the spectacle of a corporate EO throwing in the towel in the midst of organizing some event.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, if we were outsiders wondering whether we should join the SHC, it would seem to us that the Club is on the verge of a major organizational crisis rather than a vehicle for social fellowship.

Yet we know for a fact that the SHC has been a gamechanger for many seniors and well before Facebook and other social network vehicles were founded, many people’s lives have already been enriched and even transformed through the interactions and social activities of the SHC.

Our wish for SHC in 2014 is that every member focus on the original objectives of the Club and not let personality differences (of which some must be expected to be realistic) cloud their judgement and actions. Instead of settling their differences or disagreements via the forum, perhaps a phone call, personal sms or even a quiet cup of coffee could do the trick. We believe the vast majority of members join SHC for its social objectives and would like the club to remain so. We stand to be corrected, but we don’t think that we are being presumptious to say that some potential EO’s with quality ideas are not coming forward because of concern that they are stepping into a political mine field.

Do hope that our observations are taken in the right perspective as we believe they come under the realm of constructive comment. Of course some of you may beg to differ and that is entirely natural. No offence taken, and certainly no offence meant.

Let’s bring back the old kampong spirit that once we had !

Cheers and to a brighter 2014 for SHC

Exploring Golden Triangle of Thailand – Lost – Help !

Dear SHC members,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

I am planning to retire in 2014, and with 2 good friends, we are planning to explore the Golden Triangle of Thailand. All of us are first-timers ? Would really appreciate if any one can provide some pointers on :-

1. The do’s and don’ts when visiting the Golden Triangle;
2. The things to do and must-see places in Chiangmai, Chiangrai and the border town of Myanmar;
3. Can we stay over night in Myanmar? And if yes, any recommended lodging;
4. How can we travel overland from Chiangmai or Chiangrai, cross border into Laos and travel up north to Kunming Yunnan ? Any suggested mode of travel ? by bus, by train, by boat up Mekong river, etc.

We are planning to spend 2~3 weeks in March 2014 to explore the Golden Triangle.

I truly appreciate and thank all of you in advance for your suggestions !

BTW, I am also interested in Terrance’s idea of retiring in Thailand. Thank you !

Warm Regards,
Ronnie Chow.

Thailand as a place to retire

In 2004, my close friends, William Chew, Richard Ng and Vincent Khoo got together regularly to talk about retiring in Thailand. That’s 10 years ago. We have been living in the region for more than 20 years. Today, Richard stayed on and worked in Bangkok. Vincent Khoo moved back recently to Singapore due to health reasons; he is eager to get back next year. William Chew stayed on in Myanmar, having lived there for almost 30 years. I have been living in Thailand for more than 20 years, and today, I am extending my plans to live in Thailand for an indefinate period of time.

There are many Singaporeans living in Thailand, enjoying their retirement. They can be found in Chiangmai, Phuket, Bangkok, Korat, Pattaya and HuaHin. Most have either a house Upcountry or an apartment in key cities. Many live on a modest lifestyle, enjoying the vastness of Thailand, the beautiful shores, the wide range of medical facilities, the modern supermarkets, the friendly culture, and importantly, the low cost of food, transportation, housing and travel.

Language is easy, most Singaporeans can pick up day to day communication within 3 months. I went to school for 6 months, Thai karaoke every week and speak Thai in my best with anybody around me.

Whether you are a man or a woman, you will find friends to help you make Thailand a place to stay, even for retirement, short term or long term. It’s for you to build the relationships.

There is a Singapore Club of Thailand (SCOT) and there is the Singapore-Thai Chamber of Commerce (STCC). I was the President of SCOT for two terms and a co-founder of STCC. The first is social and the latter is more business. Either one, you can join.

You may be able to get a job in Thailand, or you can start a small business with a local partner. Both of which are not complicated procedures. A small business can make your stay beneficial and worthwhile.

While Thailand has a growing middle class, many Thais are still very poor. They are mainly in agriculture. If your heart is to help the poor, you will find doing charity projects meaningful as our contributions to the less fortunate.

Here in Thailand, you can easily have a maid, a kitchen help or a driver. On a shared basis, among friends, you will find the cost of living in Thailand workable and within the means of a small calculator.

I shall lead this Post on Thailand covering issues on retirement living, including short term living. Each week, I shall cover an issue, and you are free to ask a question or make a comment.

Please stick strictly to Thailand and retiring in Thailand issues. For members who wish to join in on this topic, please feel free to join in.

Kristy & Peggy’s New Year Gourmet Celebration – Sun, 5 Jan (6-10pm)

Kristy & Peggy’s New Year Gourmet Celebration

Fancy a healthy home cooked meal just like mom’s cooking followed by a sinful durian feast after, to begin the New Year ?

Yes, you can have the best of both worlds, on Sunday January 5 between 6 pm to 10 pm at 33 Mt Sinai Rise The Marbella Function Room (200 meter away from Dover MRT Station).

You are invited to join in this gathering of SHC friends for a contribution of $25. We will experience the home style cooking of Kristy & Peggy. Subject to availability, we intend to try a variety of durian ‘brands’ and we are allocating an average of one whole durian per person. Because of the limited capacity of their domestic kitchens (good thing comes in small size, he he he), we have to limit participation to the first 30 people who sign up for this event.

The menu will serve the specialties of Kristy & Peggy, eg. Macaroni Fruit Cocktail Salad, Fried Tom Yam Tung Hoon, Nyonya Chap Chye, Mama’s Curry Chicken; be assured it will not disappoint. Be sure not to miss this rare occasion.

On signing up please transfer your payment to POSB Saving Account : 038-02874-0 and Whatsapp or Message Peggy upon your payment or post here.

The joint EOs for this function are Kristy Quek & Peggy Yap

Most of us have a phone, some phones are smartphones. But, there are so many features in these phones. Tues 21 Jan 2014 (1700 hrs – 2030 hrs)

handphone6    handphone3  smartphone1

As the subject heading goes, most of us have a telephone.  And,some are smartphones. Many of these smartphones have so many features, that we rarely use all of them.  But, many of us use the phone to communicate, in voice or in text.

I had chanced upon a few members during the Yangon trip, and they know so many features that I found valuable.  Bobby Bok introduced me to the talking dictionary which helps to translate one language to another in audio.  I had checked with Hew Lee, and he felt a gathering where we share smartphone experiences would be useful to members. There is whatsapp, viber, talkKao and line.  These applications are broken down by the type of systems eg Androids, Iphone, etc.  Mine is the Blackberry; I refuse to give it up.

I also appreciate Yew Kwong, who thinks a gathering of smartphone users sharing and chatting about its features, and applications would be useful too.  I know there are many things for all of us to learn; but I was thinking of smartphones.  So, how about a gathering strictly for smartphone users.  We can break down by Android users, IPhone users, Blackberry users, and others.  And we can break down by the phone brands eg Nokia, Samsung, HTC, etc.  Each group sits around a table, and try to show one another what we have, what we know and what applications we have.

Once you put your name down here, we know which group you can join, and put you together.  Let’s max it to between 4 to 10 persons per group.  But, we leave it to you.

We can call this a gathering of Smartphone users.  Details of the meeting are as follows:

  • Date:     Tuesday, 21 January 2014
  • Time:     5 – 8.30 pm
  • Venue:  Han’s Restaurant, Upper Pickering Street
  • EO:         Bobby Bok

So, if you are game, let us know your smartphone brand, model, and we will try to arrange you by groups.  Each group can have a leader; you can raise your hand later.

A great way to know one another better, and learn something which we may not know.

Can we searched for meaning in the face of uncertainty?

Less than three months after retiring as chairman of a publicly traded investment company Harris was diagnosed with colon cancer. He was actually a very private person, however he decided to set up a blog as a means of staying in touch with his many friends.

Spending 15 months chronicling his life after diagnosis he wrote nearly 250 blog entries. Writing helps him to fight the isolationism and depression that can strike at many people with a terminal disease.

In his blog, Charlie wrote not only about his cancer, he shares his joy in association with owning and racing horses; his financial expertise; his travel experiences and observations, and about friends and family who have had an impact on his life.

One of his friend said “He did his best to maintain a normal and vibrant life, traveling during the early stages of his diagnosis, reading, watching movies and sports, listening to music, and constantly communicating with friends. It wasn’t unusual to get an e-mail from Charlie at midnight, or at 5 a.m. for that matter.”

His online diary was brought to the attention of editors of the publishing arm of a cancer research center in New York. Charlie signed a deal with the company to publish his writings. 100% of any profits from the book will go to cancer research, something he and his wife already are supporting in hopes that future patients will have a greater chance of survival.

Each chapter of the book starts with a quotation but three I shall share:

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing; the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” – Viktor E. Frankl

“He who pretends to look on death without fear lies. All men are afraid of dying, this is the great law of sentient beings, without which the entire human species would soon be destroyed.”, Jean-Jacques Rousseau

“The meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.” – Viktor E. Frankl

Reading his diary I learn not only the detail of treatment a cancer patient have to go through but how one can choose to live to the end of one life.

Chuang Tzu, one of my favourite philosopher said; “To have attained the human form is a source of joy. But in the process of evolution, there is an infinite number of other forms that are equally good. What incomparable blessing it is to undergo these countless transformations!”

Be brave, live and let go when time comes.

Light Moments: Where is the reindeer?

Fairprice at NEX has an unusual Christmas display. It is a big animal rearing up on its hind legs and it is wearing a Santa cap and has some small Christmas decorations on its muscular, brown body. It also seems to be ‘pulling’ a cart of Cadbury products.

Is it Rudolf’s new pose? No. It is a HORSE!

No one stopped to look at the Christmas horse except me who was wondering what had happened to the reindeer? Sigh.

Readers are free to speculate (seriously/creatively) on why the store/sponsor chose the horse and not the reindeer for its Christmas theme.  :)

Phonies

You know, darlings, we try to look at the good side of people when they seem to be genuine; ooh, being helpful and all that shiat but in the end they are nothing but pathetic attention seekers who absolutely don’t exist without THIS CLUB!!

Terence loves this, dahhhh!! but as far as I am concerned, please have a life, you are nothing, exactly how you feel without this club.

Sad? Absolutely! But some people are soooooo pathetic they cling on to whatever to feel their existence.

Oh, darlings, they scream (like Terence) that they are doing it out of FRIENDSHIP!!! Kekekee….

Young At Heart

This post will be full of nonsense, sorry

Last week, when I attended a free musical performance in the Esplanade, all the performers are very young, but they said they are “old at heart”. They mean they like the old songs

I always hear someone say “I am young at heart”. I don’t know what they want to expect. How this phrase is used? Can I tell the others “I am young at heart”? This “old at heart” triggered me to google the meaning of “young at heart”

From Google, I found that “Young at Heart” is a movie of 1954 (Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Gig Young), also there are a lot of definitions for “Young at Heart”. After I read some of them, I still cannot get an answer to my question.

Then I try to define it myself, first I tried to translate it from English to Chinese. I tried a few, and finially I use “???”

I also noticed that for the people they are younger than 45, they seldom say they are “Young at Heart”. But once someone pass 45, they start to say “I am young at heart”. The older they are, the more they said.

So I added two more words in front – “?????”

From there I tried to figured out what will happen when someone is “?????”

My first thought is the mind. When people are young, their mind will be naive, and become more and more mature when they grow older and older, so can the “Young at Heart” means “????, ????” But I drop this thought immediately, as in this IT era, This is not likely the case.

Then I realize the biggest different for young and old are their strength. Generally speaking, the young get more strength than the old. So the “Young at heart” should means their heart is young, but not their strength. To describe in Chinese, it should be “????”

At last, I got a definition I am satisfied and know how to use. Next time when someone ask me to do something, and I think I cannot, I will tell them -“I am young at herart” or more precisely “I am young at heart ONLY”

Tai Tai Nite DnD 2014 & Mr SHC and Miss / Mrs SHC 2014

Tai Tais and darlings

Another idea for next year.

We have had 2 cabaret nites so it’s time for we women to have a Tai Tai Nite.  What does it mean?

Am thinking we ladies will be there in our finery and diamonds, of course, and this time we shall have our HOT MALE MEMBERS on hand to pamper us etc.

The climax of the evening will obviously be Terence performing in his G-string on the pole.  We will have our US dollars ready………..

Let’s partayyy!!

Darlings

This idea just popped in my mind.  Our very own Mr SHC and Miss/Mrs SHC 2014.

Anyone cares to organize this? Obviously, I would like to be invited to be one of the Judges. Heeeheee.

I will not be able to EO this due to my duty calls besides my other commitments.
There are many awesome event organizers in our club, so let’s hear from you.

We can narrow down to Prejuding (Q&A) and the Grand Finals to simplify the pageant.

Let’s do something exciting in 2014!!

Early Next year 2015, we will go to Chennai and Kerala, South India

India map1   Indian food

sandy beach1    beach1

During the last Yangon trip, I mentioned to participants that we may go to Chennai and Kerala, South India (click on the map for a better view).  Chennai is one of the most famous and populated cities in South India.  I have been to Chennai and Kerala more than 30 times, although I am not able to speak Tamil, the language spoken by Indians who migrated to Singapore many years ago.

The attractions in Chennai are its beaches and beach resorts, the South Indian food, its culture and heritage.  Kerala is really back waters, relaxing, coconut trees, rice boats, shapely or shapeless mangoes, massage, spa and its unique food.

Over the last 12 years, I visited Chennai and Kerala, due to my work and business with the Indian newspapers.  The people of Chennai and Kerala are very nice, pleasant and cheerful.  I remembered not too long ago, I took a boat ride, only to be allowed to take over the wheel.  It’s always like this, if we are nice, others will be nice too.  We can have a holiday.  I am currently planning with a friend of mine who works in Malayala Manorama.  He is helping to piece together a program which most European tourists do not get to see.

For some of you, you may not believe it, but you can get cool winter in India.  Wear a jacket too.  I plan to go in March 2014.  You don’t have to buy tickets or book your hotels yet.  More details will pop up in this Post.  Keep in touch.  And, of course, if you are interested, simply put your name up for registration.  Going as a group is always fun.

I am not sure if it works, but let’s try.  You feel free to go ahead and try in your Post too.

For this test, come in and join me for a chitchat at 5pm today at SHC LiveChat!  Well, before my Taiwanese drama at 7pm.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow : Jan 4,(Sat) 2014. 6.00-10.00pm

There is in each one of us a wish for a better tomorrow. A hope that life will be smooth sailings with no worry of ailing health or a weak heart. A desire for good companionship and unfailing friendship.

The story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is the story of mankind struggle for existence. The Scarecrow wish to have a brain, the Tin man for a heart and the Lion for courage. Let’s look forward to the New Year with excitement, meeting and cherishing new friend.

Join us for a time of singing and singalong as we celebrate another year coming to an end. We shall have High Tea, bring snacks to share. After the session we may adjourn for Steamboat Fish Head nearby and a leisurely stroll on Orchard Road. Alas, I wish for red wine but not with High-Tea!

Venue: Kolam Ayer CC, Geylang Bahru, 11 minutes walk from Potong Pasir MRT.
Date: December 28 (Saturday), 2013
Time: 1:00-5:00pm

Cost: $6.00 if we have 10 pax, $3.00 if we achieve 20 pax. Balance of $44 from last gathering will be use to defray snacks or reduce contribution from each of you.

Christmas Walk along Orchard Road – 20-12-2013 (Friday) 6.30 – 9.30 pm

It is the time of the year again where we will say goodbye to the current Year (2013) and welcoming the New Year (2014). Some of you may be in the middle of a tour overseas having quality time with friends or with family members and others may have no plan this year.

Similarly it is also time of the year for advertisers, the shop owners and the Singapore Tourism Board to light up Orchard Road with Christmas themes and motifs. As reported, this year will have seven pieces of photographic backdrops, intended as part of this year’s transformation of the shopping belt into a winter wonderland. This year’s light up, back for its 30th year, is called Christmas on A Great Street.

At our twilight (or silver hairs) years, we do not know when we will not be able to or not able to do what we can do best. (For me at 71+, I do not know when will be my last). So, it is timely to count our blessing year by year by meeting with like-minded people to cherish our fellowship and having a simple “Christmas” food court dinner together.

As with any other years, this is a good time and opportunity to stroll, after dinner, along Orchard Road and try your night photography skills with your smartphone and/or camera. For those interested, please see details below.

Date: 20th Dec 2013 (Friday evening)
Time: 6.30PM to 9.30PM
Meeting Place and Start Point: Tanglin Mall Food Court (junction of Orchard Road & Grange Road). End Point will be at Somerset or Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station.

Program:
1) Dinner before chat: 6.30PM to 7.30PM: for those who can come early, we can have a dinner together in the food court and getting to know each other better.
2) Fellowship: 7.30PM to 8.30PM: Chat at Mall (free n easy – form your own small group on per table basis). Share what you have experienced this year, your reflections, what you can do better, etc. [A quote from the late George Carlin on The Paradox of our Time -“The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.”].
3) Start walking: 8.30PM to 9.30PM: Start walking and picture taking.

You can use your smartphone or camera to take some pictures.

Size of Gathering: in order not to make ourselves too obvious and attract unwanted attention, registration will close when 20 are reached.

Walk Hike On Tuesday Morning from 10am

Hi Fellow Retirees

I walk/hike on most Tuesday mornings from 10 am.

Since retiring in Oct 13, I had hiked Macritchie Reservior (15 KM) & Kent Ridge Park to Henderson Waves (abt 10 K). Before retirement, I had walked many many places in Singapore Parks but inconsistently.

I cycle (casual not sport) mostly alone on Sat mornings on PCN coverring abt 26 KM. I intend to cycle at Marina Barrage and Bay coming Sat evening.

If u stay at CCK, I jog on Wed or Thur evening along Brickland Rd (about 3.5 KM) if u want to join me lmk. However I must say that they are subject to weather condition by the last hour. So must not be disappointed by this.

Have a good week!

EC New Year’s Eve Dinner & Dance Countdown at The Ritz Carlton – 31 Dec’13 from 6pm

Hi Friends

We have filled up 2 tables following my post in October on the New Year’s Eve Countdown at Ritz Carlton.  We have received several enquiries asking if we could book additional tables.  Here’s the good news!  The organisers are able to accomodate us if we book by this week.  They could try to group us together with the first 2 tables which were booked in Oct 2013.
