Getting to do what I have always wanted to do, but just cannot seem to get it going right ….

I am sitting now on an Air India flight to New Delhi.  This is an early morning flight, and after a short breakfast, I could see everyone around me sleeping, wrapped around a warm blanket. Zzzz.

Well, I cannot sleep, so my mind wonders. I think about the many friends and members whom I have met in the SilverHairsClub over the last 11 years. And I went further, pondering where we will be in the next 11 years.

Winding back quickly, I remembered how hard it was to get to find a few good friends to spend time together when we retire.  At that time, I was living and working in Thailand.  I then decided to move to Singapore but at that time, the financial markets crashed, and economic scenarios changed.  And from then, many Singaporeans over 45 lost their jobs. Full time employment was a thing of the past, and today, term employment contracts are common. But I was determined to bring SilverHairs together.  A wish till today.  And that’s how SilverHairsClub started.

A. In 2005, I took up advertisements in various media, and here’s my experiences and adventures starting the Club. One lady who today is very active in SHC met up with me.  I forgot whether she called me or I called her. But I met her over a coffee. During the chat or rather the interview, she questioned me on why I am starting a SilverHairsClub. She had doubts, not about the club but about the person who is starting a Club for seniors.  Her son must have warned her mum about getting involved with men or unfamiliar organisations. But I also remembered her saying her son did say, “go out mum”. I have to admit I had difficulty explaining the objectives of SHC. Yet, I decided to preservere, and make effort to build SHC as a platform for SilverHairs to come together and meet new and more friends.

B.  The Club grew quickly, and within a year, we had our 1st Dinner and Dance. A surprise indeed.  To continue…

Ho Chi Minh City, Free & Easy, Thur 24 – 27 Nov 2016

A few of us have been toying with the idea of going to Ho Chi Minh City, free & easy.  In particular, SS James, Andrew and myself.

HCMC has many exciting attractions. The food is varied; especially street food. Beef noodles are every where. It’s most famous market is the Banh Tanh market.  The cars and motorcycles just don’t seem to hit you, even if you were to cross a 3-lane road blindfolded. Beer is about one dollar a bottle.

For those in the know, HCMC is famous for its cafe.  The ladies are somehow always slim, 28 inch waist.  With Grab bike, one can travel inside narrow lanes and markets.  And the day starts early for the Vietnamese.  And ends late too.

End Nov is cooler, and the weather likely to stay dry.

We can all meet in HCMC. We can have our own mini flexible itinery.  A private massage.  The dates have not been decided but it does not matter. We meet there.

For those who have been there, please recommend the hotel you have stayed before. Maybe near the famous market or Riverside.

Interested, let us know. I think it will be fun.  You can bring anybody along.

Pearl Hill / Tiong Bahru Trail

ECs for this walk: Serene Low and ChristinA Chan
Date: Saturday, 1 October 2016
Start Time: 4.30pm sharp
Duration of walk: approx 3 hrs
Meeting Place: Outram Road MRT, Ground level above Green line outside Ananas Cafe.

At Pearl Hilltop, we would experience light breeze, lots of shade under tall trees and a forestry park of many species of foliage.

Thereafter we shall proceed to Tiong Bahru, one of the oldest public housing estate in Singapore developed in the 1930s by the then Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT now known as HDB). The surrounding area of low rise walk up apartments were a stark contrast to the high rise HDB flats we see today.

Added to the charm of this area lies the rich heritage, unique and one of a kind murals, chic cafes and restaurants that have sprouted up in the last couple of years.

Don’t miss this experience to come together for a walk with friends old and new. We will end the walk at Tiong Bahru MRT where there are many eateries for dinner.

So do dress comfortably with hats, umbrella, drinking water, camera, sun block and comfortable walking shoes.

AIC (Agency For Integrated Care)

Hi everyone, it had been very long time since I last written post here.  So now, I am writing and hope this article will be of some help to others too as these had helped me.

When my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer during Oct ‘2013 and we were totally clueless as to what were the grants that we can apply to ease our burden.  Eventhough during that period of time, many emphasizes were on Pioneer generation but unfortunately, was time was not on my dad’s favor.  Well, that was history now.. so we will  skip this part.

My dad passed on Oct 2014 and shortly after that my mum’s health deteriorated and from then till now, she had been through 1 stroke and 3 seizures attacks which lead to totally bedridden now.  But this time, we were much well informed thru news, community centres and hospital on the AIC grants.

Through all these info given, we are told that we can apply for the following grants

  1. PioneerDAS : For Pioneer born before Year 1950 -$100/mth till as long as alive
  2. Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) grant – Cash assistance of $120/mth for family who hires a FDW to care for patient
  3. FDW levy concessions for persons with disabilities (PWD) – Lower monthly concessionary FDW levy of $60 instead of $250
  4. Interim disability assistance programme for the Elderly (IDAPE) – Cash assistance of $250 or $150/mth for up to 72mths for disabled elderly

More information can be found at www.pioneers.sg, www.silverpages.sg and www.mov.sg  related to all these grants.  FYI, we applied and we got approved for these grants.

AIG also provide

  1. Care at home : Eldersitter Service, Home care and Senior home car – As we did not used these services, I am not sure and cant provide much info too.
  2. Centre-based care : Day rehabilitation, day care and dementia day care : We tried a few times but my mum was not so cooperative with the social worker and she prefered to stay at home hence, we also dropped out 2mths later.
  3. Caregiver Training Grant allows we to tap on an annual $200 subsidy to attend approved training course for better : This was very good as we send our domestic help to attend on managing an elderly’s day-to-day and preventing falls and home safety.  Both my sister and our helper had benefited from this training to be able to attend to my mum’s daily needs.
  4. There are some basic necessities, such as wheelchairs, air mattress, commode, walking sticks – All can be purchased at 10-50% discounts depending on feedback from the medical social worker assigned to access the patient’s condition – For my mum’s condition, we only paid 10% of the total cost.  Diapers also can be purchased at their designated stores.
  5. Even patient with permanent catheter, they even assigned qualified nurse from SNF to attend at patient’s home every 2 to 3mth interval at subsidised rate.  Cant remembered how much we paid but I am sure it was less than $30.
  6. Given my mum’s condition, we also applied for home medical care which mean that we can request the Doctor to attend my mum at our home once her medication is below 2 weeks’ usage at $25/trip except for CT and MRI  as these need to be performed at site.

I am sure that there are other services that AIC provided – but just that, we only took these options so I can only share these info.  Our encounters (my family members and me) with AIC had been a very fruitful as we had some financial help and other services/training given to 3 of us, i.e. my sister, me and our helper.

Hope some will find this useful when needed.

Regards… Dolly

One night in JB, 8/9 July 2017

A video cotribution by MegaA as a kickstart to “One night in JB”.

We had a Dinner and Dance at KSL resort, JB some months ago.  The feedback was generally good, and this time again, towards the year-end, we shall have another event in JB, over a Sat/Sun.

Feedback from members suggested that transport from Singapore to the event is an important consideration for many members.

Feedback from dancers suggested that the dance floor needs to be big enough and suitable for dancing.

We had good feedback on the food, the rooms and the event proper, although some fine tuning is required to make the event more fun and enjoyable.

Feedback also indicated we can consider a venue change.  Besides KSL, we may consider the Double Tree Hilton hotel.  We are now confirmed to use KSL hotel and resort again.

Again,”One night in JB” promises lots of dancing, singing, good food and good companionship. This time around, the Club will target 40 pax, with a possibility of up to 200 participants.  We shall leak out more details as we form the committee.

You are invited to contribute your ideas and suggestions. The date has not been set but it will be Nov or Dec 2016 be around mid 2017. Transport from Singapore will be provided from Singapore via the 2nd Link, though optional if you wish to drive yourself or go on your own via the causeway.

If you like to join the club committee for this event, plse WhatsApp me at 9489-4360.

Monthly walk: a Forest trail

Date: 3rd September 2016, Saturday

Time: 4.15pm SHARP

Duration: approx 2hours

Meeting Place: Marymount MRT, Passenger Service/Control Station (use the facility here, else hold till we reach the end of walk).

ECs: Alice Seah and ChristinA Chan

Note: Be punctual! from Marymount we will commute by bus to the “Start point”
and also need to be out of the forest before dark.

We will take an unpaved, gravel trail (dirt track) that we, the walk team have never embarked on getting into MacRitchie Reservoir.
Trail is shady due to the towering trees and rather thick foliage.
Terrain is easy to moderate.
Expect occasional very gradual uphill slopes and downhilling that might give your calf muscle a good stretch at the end of the walk.

One might tread on small ditches, so do not come in a new pair of shoes or your Sunday best.

Recommended:
Covered walking shoes, hand-held or battery operated fan, an umbrella instead of raincoat as can be humid in the forest of trees; insect repellent and drinking water.

We shall end our walk at the Mushroom café. Last order for dinner is 8.30pm.

the Walk Team: Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Serene Low, Alice Seah,
Azhari Cuttilan and I, ChristinA Chan.

This is an EC activity. Bring your adult friends who are over 45!

Interested to venture into the forest? Register soonest!         :D

Let’s give our best wishes on Singapore’s National Day

All SilverHairsClub members are more than 45 years, and we remembered Singapore since our independence day.
Today, our country has prospered; our kids have grown up and many of us are either nearing our retirement or have retired’

Every National Day, we bring back memories of National Day Parades, fireworks, the Padang and now Marina Bay. Today, we have songs to energise our younger generation and draw Singaporeans together.

Let’s wish Singapore “Happy Birthday”. Share your thoughts of your past \national Days and what you will be doing this National Day.

And here’s a song for everybody.

Britain has exited the European Union. It’s now a fact. Why leave and How will this separation affect you?

EU

Many of us SilverHairs, now in our 50s and 60s, have been associated with Britain ever since we started our early education. We learn English, our laws are based on the English system, we go to London, Scotland for our holidays. Some of us send our kids to study in Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow.  In recent years, many SilverHairs have bought properties in Central London,  We saw the ups and downs of Britain; and many of us tracked the growth of the English empire, and its association with the European Union.

Yesterday, at noon, the shock came as Britains voted to exit the EU.  The financial markets tumbled, governments come out to stabilise their currencies and economies.  What’s next?  How will this BREXIT affect you?  What happens to your properties?  Your kid’s education? And how does this affect your business, your equities and your savings?

Let’s discuss and share your thoughts?  A turmoil few of us expect.

Ticket applications for National Day Parade 2016

Dear Member,

Just in case you are not aware, Singaporeans and Permanent Residents can start applying for tickets to this year’s National Day Parade and its two previews via this link:

https://www.ndp.org.sg/tickets/

This year’s festivities will mark the celebration’s return to National Stadium after 10 years. Previously, it was held at Marina Bay’s floating platform and at the Padang after the former National Stadium was slated for demolition.

The parade this year promises highlights such as the use of unmanned technologies, aerial displays involving props and performers, and indoor fireworks.

Previews will be held on July 23 and 30, while the official parade will be on Aug 9, Singapore’s national day.

Hurry!  Application ends this Sunday – 22 May 2016.

Cheers!

MIke Tay
