Lunch on Friday, 23/5/2014 at Blk 112 Bishan St 12

It is an Italian stall in a neighbourhood coffee shop. Their food tastes great and yet their prices are very reasonable. Their food starts from a very affordable price of $3.90. An average main item, such as their spaghetti, costs about $6.90.

Some recommendations:
Garlic butter pork (I think it is $7.90), it is great with a generous portion being served.
Gelato – one of their specialties.

I am EOing this activity. I will be booking with them one table of 10. If response is good, I will try to book two tables if we can reach 20 people.

Event: Lunch and social gathering
Time: 12noon to 2pm
Venue: Blk 112 Bishan St 12, Singapore 570112 – Coffee Shop

Pickleball – Let’s Play This Sport Together

My name is Eric Leow, a new member to this Club.

I am playing pickleball for the last year and there are players who are playing this for the last 20 odd years. Many players across all skill-level have claimed that it would be “very hard” to stop playing the game, with some saying that they are “very determined” to continue playing.

Briefly pickleball is a hybrid of Badminton, Tennis and Table-tennis, a three in one game, played with a wooden, graphic, or composite paddles and a perforated plastic ball. It can be played on a normal Badminton court or on any hard surface. The net is lowered to 3 ft high.

If you find badminton, tennis or squash too strenuous for you, then pickleball is an excellent introductory game. It is very easy to learn and is quickly played and enjoyed by everyone, men, women, children and benefiting people at all ages. It is a low cost game. Badminton courts are easily available in our CC or sports hall. All you need is to buy the paddles and balls.

From my personal experience, I found that most pickleball clubs do not want to take in new players who have not play this game before.

I know the organizer of a pickleball club, and I think I should be able to convince him to recruit new players. Subject to SHCians expression of interest, I am considering to introduce pickleball and EO this sports here.

If this is on, it would be on every Tues and Thurs 9.30am to 12.30pm. However, if the CC required the use the hall for activities then that session will be cancelled.

You just need to get your own paddle, and contribute towards the purchase of balls. Not to worry about the amount, it is very affordable. It is about $3-$4 per month.

The place is in the vicinity of Hougang.

Expression of interest:

2. Jassmine Teo
3. Ann Giri
4. Kristy Quek
5. Jacqueline Wong
6. Frisna Tan

Investments: Online trading and what works for you? an activity in July 2014

investment2investment1     investment3

In July 2014, we shall have another session on “Investments: Online trading – What works for you?”  This topic has been suggested by Jonathan Ong.  Some of us trade, on a daily basis.  Some of us work only at night.  Some of us go for courses, conducted by broker companies.  Some of us swear we can make money even if we live outside Singapore, in a resort on top of the mountain, or on a cruise or somewhere in Penang.

Of course, many of us have our good days.  While some of us swear of success by adopting certain techniques, philosophy and psychology.  This Sat 17 May, we have a session on “Investments and US markets”.  Depending on how participants react to this session, we can have another session in July.  Date and place not decided yet.

While the planning is ongoing, you are invited to contribute ideas to make this session interesting.  We can adopt some of your ideas.  Look forward to hearing from you.

Can you share a lunch venue you know well?

lunch2lunch1lunch3

Hi everybody,

For members who are still working, we tend to have our gatherings in the evenings and on weekends.

For members who are not working, we tend to meet during daylight hours. We tend to avoid evening hours. No beers and loud music.

To many, Saturdays and Sundays are considered family time, so weekend activities suit some.

What about lunch time? Everybody needs to eat. Some of us have lunch 12-1pm, others 1-2pm. Retirees and those whose hours are flexible can go out lunch 12-2pm.

Our monthly gatherings are usually on a weekday, between 4pm and 8.30pm. Sometimes, we try weekends. I don’t remember we having a lunch time gathering.

Do you know of a cosy place that we can meet? Frequency: once a week. For a start, we can consider any weekday 12-2pm.

1. Have lunch at the venue, maybe $6-10 @ person (I pick this number from the air). Lunch could be single dish with Tea/coffe or a set lunch with a soup, main and Tea/coffee. The venue decides the food.

2. Must be near a MRT station, without need to change to a bus, etc. We have limited lunch time.

3. Free seating, and confirmation of the number of Pax, one day before the lunch. Give the venue time to arrange the food.

4. Participants open to SilverHairsClub members, booking of lunch one day before the actual lunch date, and pre-paid.

5. Members can bring friends. Friends and non-members pay $2 per Pax, over non-member’s lunch.

6. Objective of this lunch is to facilitate members getting to know other members, and their friends. Can also bring parents so that they get to know one another too. We have to break the loneliness in our life when we get older and retire.

If you cook or can organise the food, and know of a venue, again meeting the above criteria, this can also be considered.

If you have been to a venue that meets the criteria, please mention the place here. You can also whatsapp me or speak to any of member whom you know.

SilverHairsClub believes that when members and seniors gather together, they will finally find common interests and friends. The rest is up to you.

Online business

I’ve always been interested in starting an online business but have yet to take concrete action because of a reluctance to move out of my comfort zone. Today in the Sunday Times there is an article about an online business in renting – “Just rent and save” – toys, cars, tools.. and once again I started dreaming… I have a few pieces of retro clothing – cat-suit, cheongsam..i think I can rent them out…my mind went.

Hmm, anyone else enthusiastic about starting an online business in renting out things? We could brainstorm over coffee. :) We could collaborate if feasible or start individual platforms. Wonder what the pitfalls are.

Update:

The brainstorming session will be held on Thursday 5th June.

Time: 2.30 – 4.30 p.m.

Venue: Dignity Kitchen.

Blk 267, Serangoon Ave 3 #02 -02

Using MS Office (Excel) – (17th May 2014 – Saturday)

Microsoft Office (Excel) is a wonderful spreadsheet program. We can use it to develop our own family budget planning. I am no financial guru but a person who through life had managed other people’s money (as a purchaser). The bottom line is always the final balance sheet, the IN and OUT of money flow and how justify we are to spend the way it was spent. There is no one answer to every solution. If it is our own money, then plan and spend it wisely.

My intended talk, with details below, will just demonstrate to you the effects of any change in monthly income (gain or lost) will affect your projected family lifestyle.

Topic: How to prepare a family annual budget using Microsoft Office (Excel)
Date: 17.05.2014 (Saturday)
Time: 3.00PM to 5.00PM
Attendance Fee: Free (no charge)
Venue: Leng Kee Community Centre (Nearest MRT – Redhill MRT)
Venue changed to Queenstown Community Centre (Nearest MRT – Queenstown)

Address: 365 Commonwealth Ave, Singapore 149732 (Phone: 6474-1681)
Prerequisite: Understand basic computing and bring your laptop with MS Office installed if you have one.
Owing to classroom size, registration will stop at 20.

Virtual SHC Co-operative ( Part II )

After my posting on above, discussion review the necessity to disclose how share allocation on the Incorporated SHC Co-operative. The basic and formulae are as follow :

Using the illustration of Spore-Pengerang-Spore Tour package. Assuming we manage to generate a sales of 10,000 units over the period. This will generate a value of 10,000 x 88= 88,000. Out of this 88,000 , 7,000 will be awarded to participated member drivers; 4400 (5% sales commission to members generating the revenue) 2640 (3% to SHC enterprise) We will take 88000 ( value varies depending on performance) as a basis point for share units. The share value will be determind on various factors- e.g magnitude of growth, market capitalisation, etc ) Lets assume a figure of $20.00 per share. Thus the registered issue capital for will be 88,000 units x $20 =  $ 1,760.000 .

The piioneer share holders registered capital will be

SHC enterprise                                   $   52,800  but only pay S 2,640 to acquire                the Participated member drivers        $ 140,000 but pay only S$ 7,000 to acquire            the  Sales Members                           $   88,000 but  pay only S$ 4,400 to acquire         the  Balance 73,960 belongs to the management team and the existing  members who constribute to the purchases. A convincing reports base on actual allocation will be discuss. All unalocated share will be open to new members/inactive member ( non-constributors) to subscribe at $ 20 a unit.

I look forward to the day to pay passive income through yearly declared dividend to member shareholders, generate silver hair employblities and other benefits.

I cannot be a oneman show to term a management team. Invitation is open to members to volunteer as Accountant, Auditors And records Adminstrator and trustee for Fund collection. I am looking into other programme that are beneficiary to SHC and at same time can constribute revenue to our venture.

I wish the car owners will volunteer to constribute to the success of my first Travel Package . Other forms of human resources ( e.g out of box ideas, contacts ) are highly appreciated if you suggest. You can email me at ang_tonio@yahoo.com.sg if you like to clearify before posting on blogg.

Virtual SilverHair Co-operative

When I first retired from my full time job age 50 with NTUC, I wanted to set up a co-operative for Seniors but was put off as I had an attractive offer to work in China. Now that I am jobless and believe time in on my side .

I believe in pooling  members ‘ existing resources  to work for the success of this co-operative. I do not believe in asking members to contribute money towards this set-up. No body is to bleed for the failure of this misadventure.

Many retirees spend on all forms of necessities- which forms the revenue of  this co-operative. As this co-operative taps on the facilities provided by SHC enterprise- a 3% on revenue sales is provided as a constribution. All resources provided by members will be awarded in monetary gains. Details of rewards will be outlined as we roll out programme.

I have plans for  Tour programme -(A) Spore-Pengerang-Spore (B) Spore-kukup-Spore. we will develop other packages as times go by. The details of (A) as follows :

Spore-Pengerang-Spore Tour 1                          Spore-Pengerang-Spore Tour 2

8.30 am – Assemble at pick-up point                   8.30 am – Assemble at Changi Ferry T 8.45 am – Cars leave via causeway                    8.45 am – By Boat to Tg Pengelin Ter 10.00am- Arrived lago land/shoppingComp       10.00am – At Pengerang walk  around 12.30am -Lunch at Farm house/others              12.30pm – Lunch at Kg Sungai Rengit 2.30pm  – Tour around Sungai Rengit                                  and tour around                  3.oopm  – drop passengers at Jetty to                3.15 pm – Pick up Tour 2 passengers                       ferry home                                                           heading for  JB shopping         By 5.00pm –  Those intend to stay a night           6.00 pm –  Dinner is optional at own

The resources require to make this tour successfully depends on members car pooling, as well as salesmanship. Sales commission 5%. Car driver get  $ 140 ( travel by Taxi to kampong Sungai Rengit from JB is S$ 70).

I intend to price this tour package at S$88 (all inclusive except Lago Land entry fee) per pax..Any suggestion to charge higher are welcome. Under this win-win arrangement. As participant- you have the comfort of travelling in private car. As a participated Driver-you have ( S$140-88 ) S$ 55.00 appreciation fees.

Opinion poll : How about each passenger pay S$ 75 transport to Participate Driver for Genting / Malacca Trip ?

A thought going through my mind

payment3hahahapayment1

Here’s a thought that has been going in my mind since our last BBQ picnic at Changi Beach Park. It has also bothered me as to how some members think about the cost of events.

Paul came all the way to meet me at the BBQ picnic, specifically to bring me the message on what some members of his group feel about the cost of the BBQ event. I won’t try to read further into the comment, but it goes like this.
To participate in the BBQ picnic, members who come without bringing along any food have to pay $10. Those who bring food, enough for 4, will have a discount of $8. In other words, they pay a net of $2.

Those who came just for the event, will need to pay $10.

If everybody brings along food, they will need to pay $2 each.

The issue is if a member comes along, with food, he/she will have enough food for 4 Pax.

The question is if there is food for 4 Pax, then why is there a need to charge $10. Where did the $10 go to?

And, if everybody brings food, what is the point of collecting $2.

I decided to EO this event because I was looking for a breezy place, for a members gathering, with plenty of standing room to move around for chitchatting and getting to know one another. And being a Sat afternoon, this will be a pleasant change.

Thinking about it again, I am grossly shocked at the insinuation by Paul’s group. And I am wondering if I should be affected by these remarks.

I hope to hear members’ views.

12 Days Mount Everest Tibetan Plateau (9 – 20 June 2014)

I have looked at more than 15 Tibet packages and was looking for one that include Mt. Everest in the itinerary. Most travel agencies offer 9 or 10 days packages that do not include Mt. Everest. The reason is that a side trip to Mt. Everest base camp will add $400-$500 more to the package and there is little demand for it. Most people want a shorter and cheaper trip. So far, I have found only 1 travel agency that offer a 12D Tibet tour that includes Mt. Everest and the tour is confirmed. Let’s call this agency A.

For agency A, the departure date is 9 June, 2014. The cost is 2888 (package) + 350 (taxes) + 72 (tips) = $3310. It was more than I initially expected. But, after talking to the agent, I think the cost is justifiable and reasonable. She promised that there will not be any compulsory optional tour, no shopping tour and the cabin for the train ride is 4 to a room with soft beds. Some travel agencies provide 6 to a room with hard beds. For those with 6 in a room, the door cannot be locked (security is compromised) and the windows are dirty (cannot take photos through the window).

Beside the above mentioned travel agency, there are 2 other agencies that offer 12D Tibet tour with Mt. Everest. None of them have received any booking. Let’s call these 2 agencies B & C, and the details of the packages are given below.

B: Depart 5 June, Requires 10 to depart, Estimated cost $2900 (includes package, taxes, tips and compulsory optional tour), Shopping stops on the trip

C: Depart 5 June, Requires 6 to depart, Estimated cost $3050 (includes package, taxes, tips and compulsory optional tour), Shopping stops on the trip

In 2008, three of my friends (with one of them from Xian, China) have decided to visit Tibet in April 2008 on a Free n Easy trip. Due to the riot in March 2008, the Tibet trip was cancelled. Since we have already purchased our air tickets to Xian (we plan to take a train from Xian to Lhasa), we decided to fly into Xian and spend most of our time in Xian and the surrounding regions. At that time, we estimated the cost to be about $2000+ on a shoe string budget and plan to stay at budget inns.

So far, Jane Chua and I are confirmed going. If you are interested in any of the packages, please reply with your preference (indicating A, B, C or no preference), preferably asap as we have to make a decision soon. If we can get enough people, we can consider the lower cost package.

Bajie, about 7km from the town of Bayi and it has a history of more than 2,500 years. In the afternoon, travel 70km north in
the Yunnan-Tibet highway to the fairty-tale world ‘Lulang Forest Area’ which is known as ‘Little Switzerland of Tibet’. It is
the most impressive is the forest of Tibetan cypresses of about 10ha at the Bagyai Village in Nyingchi County at 3,040m
above sea level. Take a distance look at Najiabawa Peak. The main peak of Nanjiabawa is 7,782m high and famed as “the
father of icebergs”. The Nanjiabawa Peak is the highest in the Prefecture of Nyingchi and the 15th highest in the globe. Its
colossal triangle body is covered with deep snow and mists all year around which makes people hard to see its real face.

Day 3: Nyingchi / Lhasa (8hrs drive to Lhasa) (B/L/D)
Before depart Nyingchi, proceed to the most beautiful Kadinggou. Drive over the 5,013m above sea level Mila Mountain and
arrive Lhasa. Check-in to hotel after dinner.

Day 4: Lhasa/ Potala Palace / Jokhang Monaster / Barkhor Street (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we begin our exploration of the famous Potala Palace, perched on the northern side of Morburi Mountain.
Throughout the ages, it had been the winter palace of Dalai Lamas. Its name means ‘sacred Buddhist site’ in Tibetan
language. This palace-like complex of buildings was first built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo to mark his
marriage with the Tang Dynasty’s princess Wencheng as well as to house the Buddha images brought by Wencheng and
the Nepalese princess Bhrikuti Devi. Over time, the palace was restored and expanded. The buildings are built of wood and
stone over 13 levels that span a height of over 117m, and a width of 400m from east to west and 360m from north to south.
The 130,000m2 architectural wonder has more than
1,000 gilded rooms and halls. The palace also houses priceless artefacts and artworks. Continue to Jokhang Monastery,
situated in the centre of Lhasa. It was first built in 674AD to celebrate the marriage of King Songtsen Gampo with Princess
Wencheng and Bhrikuti Devi, both devout Buddhists. This monastery underwent expansion over the years and today, its
four-level main hall sports a gilded roof and a blend of Han Chinese, Tibetan, Nepalese and Indian architectural styles. The
centre hall is supported by 20 beautifully carved wooden beams, while the under the eaves of the second and third levels of
the main hall are intricate sculptures of sphinxes and woodcarvings depicting animals. The corridors and halls are also
densely adorned with colourful murals of a total length of over 1,000m, which portray historical episodes and mythological
legends. Buddha images, including one of Sakyamuni at 13 years old, preside over the main hall, while the side halls feature
lifelike statues of King Songtsen Gampo, Princess Wencheng and Princess Bhrikuti Devi. Proceed to Barkhor Street in the
old city, which offers glimpses of traditional Tibetan life. The faithful chant and circumambulate around Jokhang Monastery.
In this circular street there are also shops selling a wide variety of crafts such as Tibetan knives, bangles, shoes and more.

Day 5: Lhasa/ Namtso Lake (B/L/D)
After breakfast, coach to Namsto. When you arrive Na Gang Kou, you can see the bright lake surface of Lake Nam-tso in the
western side. Follow the smooth road down the mountain, you may then see the lake. However, the road is heading for Nam
village government at the north side. You cannot see the other side of the shore of Lake Nam-tso..

Day 6: Lhasa / Yamdrok lake / Shigatse (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we depart for Shigatse. Along the way, we pass-by Yamzo Yumco Lake, whose name means ‘swan lake’.
Also known as Baidi Lake, it is wedged between two mountains, hence like a swan spanning its wings. The crystal-clear
lake, located over 4,000m above sea level, has an area of 638m2, about the size of Singapore. It is the largest freshwater
lake in Tibet, with a depth of up to 59m.

Day 7: Shigatse / Dingri (B/L/D)
In th morning, visit Tashi-Lhunpo Monastery, the largest monastery of the Tibetan Buddhist Yellow Sect and seat of the
Panchen Lama. This monastery, whose beauty is on par with that of Potala Palace, is located 2km west of Shigaze. It was
founded by the first Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Gendun Drup, in 1447AD. Its name means ‘all fortune and happiness gather here’.
Built against the mountain, this complex of overlapping buildings looks like a little town from afar. Covering 300,000m2, the
complex is enclosed by a wall of 1,500m. The oldest building is the Main Chanting Hall. Constructed over 12 years, it is
fronted by a courtyard where Panchen Lamas presided over Buddhist lectures. The courtyard walls are covered with
Buddha images. The Main Chanting Hall houses the Panchen Lama’s throne and several chapels, including a Sakyamuni
chapel, Bodhisattva chapel and Tara chapel. Don’t miss the Tenth Panchen Lama’s Stupa. The Tenth Panchen Lama was a
highly respected Tibetan Buddhist leader.

Day 8: Dingri/Mount Everest/ Shigatse (B/L/D)
Zhumulangma Peak (Chinese: ????? Zh?mùl?ngm? F?ng) or Mount Chomolangma – is the highest mountain on
Earth above sea level, and the highest point on the Earth’s continental crust, as measured by the height above sea level of
its summit, 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia, is located on the border
between Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal, and Tibet, China.
We’ll go to the highest Mount Everest nature protection area and watch sunrise by early morning.
After that going to Mount Everest station by walk, it will take about 1 hour. Feels the nature grandness, also may see
fortunately has Mount Everest flag cloud which like fire of the life flutters. Across the Mount WuJiaLa(5200 m), we can find
out Mount ZhuoAoYou (8201 m),Mount LuoZi(8201 m),and Mount MaKaLu(8463 m) around the Mount Everest. All the white
world, stand here, Life, even the whole universe is absolute reality.
