SHC’s first Teresa Teng sing-alike activity, Sun 15 Feb 2015

teresa teng   Teresa Teng lived during our time. Unfortunately, she has already left us. Her heart is still with many people in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan. Her songs are varied, wide and memorable. Some of us sing just like Teresa Teng, either in Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Japanese or English. Music makes the world go rund. Music brings people together, and I hope this program will bring Singaporeans and PRs (esp members of SHC) together.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkPPGj62n3E&sns=em

Some of you have suggested on this forum to have a Teresa Teng sing-alike activity. The idea of this event is still vague. However, I see this event as an opportunity for those who love to sing Teresa Teng’s songs on stage. If you sing like Teressa Teng, or at least close to Teresa Teng, and would like to sing for us, we would create a registration list here for you to let us know..

If you like to compere this event, please let me know here. For comperes, you may write to me via email or Whatapp.

The date of this event has been set for Sun 15 Feb 2015. Singers will have to be SHC members only. As long as your songs have been sung by Teresa Teng, the song will be accepted. Although Teresa Teng is a lady, men are encuraged to participate too.

We shall have Daniel Chan who has kindly volunteered to be the compere.

Some ideas include a “What you know about Teresa Teng” quiz.  You suggest and if we can create the idea, why not?

Let’s discuss and study if we can benefit from buying in bulk

bulk1     bulk4  bulk7  C  Numerous ideas flow through the Club and it’s members. For the farsighted, members see we should look at buying in bulk. However, we should discuss and study if bulk buying works. Perhaps, the idea is just too big, as we are not a cooperative. Perhaps, we don’t have someone to lead and take us through. Perhaps, we have not seen the benefits as yet.

Honestly, I have little time to take this lead. But to hold the issue and not discuss further and not taking advantage of our group would be short-sighted and negative. Many ideas are short-term or short-lived..

If someone in our membership can coordinate and lead the discussion in depth, we may be able to start with one product or one service. If you are interested to take this challenge, let me know. We need a leader or even a coordinator.

Gathering for new members

new members3  new members1  new members2We can give this a try, a gathering for new members.  Some senior members felt that we should have a gathering for new members, for example those who have joined this year 2014.

The new members are likely not to know anybody in the Club, and sometimes are lost in the monthly gathering.  Hopefully a gathering for new members once a year would help.

In a gathering, older members tend to gather among themselves, resulting new members feeling that SHC has many cliques.  So, perhaps a gathering for new members may or can help.  Many members keep saying the Club should do something to help the new members.  Many members feel that our gatherings should have a timeslot dedicated to introducing new members.

Perhaps, we should find a place, a date and a time. Yes, venue has been proposed and confirmed as follows:

1: Venue: Hans Cafe at Upper Pickering Road, Great Eastern Building.
2. Date: Mon 22 Sept 2014.
3. Time: 1700 – 2000 hrs.
4. Participation – Free.
5. F&B – Buy from the Hans Counter.
6. When you arrive, please see Kristy Quek at table registration.

Do let us know that you will be coming.

Sep “Boom Boom” – Answer two questions correctly and a chance to win $100 NTUC vouchers

boom1  boom1  boom2

It’s easy to participate.  Simply answer two questions.  Members who have given the correct answers will have a chance to win a $100 NTUC Fairprice voucher in a lucky draw, conducted during the 1st week of Oct 2014.

  • Question 1 – SHC has two official songs.  The first song was compiled by sung by member Clara Chay, and the music composed and played by Ronald Wi. The second song is sung and compiled by Sompho Homjumroon, who is our Thai counterpart member. Q: Which province from Thailand does Sompho live in? (Only one word please).
  • Question 2 – SilverHairsClub has basically two titles for members organising events for other fellow members.  One is Event Organiser EO, and the other is Event Coordinator EC.  Let us know the name and the date of the event you have attended since the Club started.  Q: Who was the EO or EC of that event?

Details:

  1. Members who have given the correct answers will be entered into a lucky draw during the first week of Oct 2014.  Names will be announced a few days before the last day of this month on this forum.
  2. The lucky winner will need to email boomboom@SilverHairsClub.com, provide the mailing address, and the vouchers will be delivered by registered post.
  3. Each member can win only one prize per calendar year or until 31 Dec 2014.
  4. Strictly for registered members.  Membership should have the updated email address and contact tel with the Club at the time of participation.

“Boom Boom” Sep starts as soon as the questions are posted on this forum. You can only submit only one answer to each question.

Let’s have some fun.  Please encourage your SHC friends to participate.

Yangon trip, IN Fri 03 Oct 2014, OUT Mon 06 Oct 2014

temple1  temple2  temple3  temple4  myanmar marketI shall be in Yangon again in early Oct 2014.  And I shall extend my my trip if there are members wanting to visit Yangon. The dates are:

  • IN Fri 03 Oct 2014 – you have to arrive on or before 3 Oct, although 3 Oct will be spent in Yangon.
  • OUT Mon 06 Oct 2014 – You can leave anytime on or after 06 Oct 2014.

Note:  06 Oct is a public holiday.  We are likely to stay in the Chinatown area because the hotels are cheaper, and a few were newly rennovated.  The hotels will have internet WIFI, although I cannot guarantee the WIFI is stable. Chinatown is vibrant, full of food and busy from morning 5am to at night 9pm. Check with your friends who have joined me to Yangon before. Participants will have the option to book their own hotels, and these can be organised together as a package by the travel company which we use during our last trip.

USD or Kyatts are accepted in Yangon.  Credit cards are very very very limited in use, and incur surcharges.  Money exchange difficult to find, rates at hotel are unattractive.  Bring USD, that’s for first timers.

Please contact or send your queries only via this Post.  I shall bring some brochures on Yangon.  You may have a look at my fleamart stand on Sat 6 Oct.

IT, computer and smartphone courses – Sharing and teaching

training3  training4  training2

All of us want to learn.  It used to be taken courses on computers – desktops and notebooks.  Today, there are smartphones.  Not a new idea, but we have always talk about closing the digital gap between the savvy and non-savvy members.  If only, we have a place. Many of our members have the knowlede and the experience.  Learners can pay a fee, and the proceeds can go to pay the cost of the venue, the instructors, etc.   Yew Kwong has suggested that we draw up a list of members who are interested to conduct e-sessions.  I too think this is a good idea.  Hew Lee is one good example. Let’s draw up a list of topics, and if you think that you can teach a particular topic, raise your hand here.  Once we have a sizeable team of instructors, we would look at a team of people to organise these courses.  Feel free to add the topics that would be of interest to seniors and Singaporeans in general.

  • Instant messaging – Viber, Whatsapps, LINE, WeChat, facebook
  • Skype
  • Games
  • Emails – smartphones,
  • Android system – Internet browsing, Maps
  • Storage – dropbox, google box, etc
  • Online TV, radio, songs, karoake, youtube
  • Online transport – IRIS, SG All bus

And, if you have suggestions for a venue, please let us know.  Members can offer to conduct these above courses, find a venue, and also charge a fee.  Please go ahead.

Cooking classes

cook2     cook1   cook3

For a long time, we have been trying to organise cooking classes.  We love to cook, try new receipes and finally eat, what we cook.  However, it has not been easy to find a cooking place.  Conducting cooking classes in the house or apartment has not been very successful, due to limited space and resources.  Venue has always been hard to find. Schools with cooking facilities are expensive; although they are idea. Some members have their own specialties.  There are Hokkien, Hakka, Beijing, Indian and Indonesia food.  We can also have break making classes, cakes, etc. Last week, I was shown around the cooking training classroom with full kitchen facilities at CSC Tessensohn Road.  I  was impressed. Holding cooking classes at such venues has its advantages, although there is cost, timing, cleaning and effort to go with it.  But, maybe we can now try cooking classes, a great way to meet the club objective of providing a platform for members to meet new friends.  Food through the stomach; and putting members and seniors skill to good value.

  • If you like to try other members’ specialties, please raise your hand. So, we know who you are.  Maybe you like bread, cup cakes, 12 layer something, etc.
  • If you have a couple of specialty food skills, and like to share and teach your delicacies, please raise your hand. We might pick up the idea, and conduct cooking courses.

Allowing mobile telephone number to be published on this forum

hp1      hp2

Dear members, in particular EOs,

We have not allowed the contact telephone numbers to be published in SHC, for security reasons.  This has its disadvantages.  Members are unable to contact the EO or the EC, in case of need for emergency contact.  Over the past years, some EOs have requested to allow their mobile tel to be published.  I see the advantage.  But, it is still a NO.

I am thinking of allowing mobile telephone numbers of EOs and ECs to be published.  If there is sufficient support for this suggestion, I am likely  allow mobile tel of EOs and ECs to be published.  Provided the EO and EC published enough information in the post.  And, that this does not allow the collection of members contacts for direct selling, MLM or any other purpose than the intended event.

Please to hear your views.

WEF 23 Aug 2014, EOs and ECs can insert their contact telephone numbers on this forum.  Non-EOs and Non-ECs should continue to use this forum for communication.

Planning our year-end do at Scarlet City, AMK Hub on Fri 5 Dec 2014

Couples dancing a tango  shcdance4  shcdance5

Latest:  This venue may be changed.  Please refer to https://silverhairsclub.com/?p=16351.

We had an earlier plan to have a D&D at CSC Tessensohn in Dec 2014.  However, for various reasons, we are unable to hold the event there.

A few members have recently recee’d Scarlet City at AMH Hub and found the place suitable for our year-end event.  We do like to have your feedback before deciding further what to do. It is expensive to find a venue during the month of Dec when corporations and individuals are looking to celebrate the year end.  Prices are also steep, and especially when we are looking to have the event on a Friday evening.

Well, Scarlet city has a slot for us, if we are interested.  The place is well setup for night entertainment.  We can have the place from 6.30pm, and enjoy ourselves until 2 – 3am.  Scarlet city will put up a buffet dinner, with free flow of soft drinks.  The plan is to have our own program from 6.30 pm to 9.30pm; followed by Scarlet City’s own music, entertainment and star performances from 9.30pm to 2am. During the second segment, there will be other guests who will come for dancing, music and performances.  We will continue to stay until 2am.  Cover charge included.

We need to guarantee 100 pax, so your feedback would help in our decision.  As Scarlet city requires a deposit to be made, in view of the busy period, we like to hear from you.  It is likely that the evening will cause us $65 per head, if we meet the minimum number of heads.

Investments interest groups and talks

investtalk3   investtalk2  investtalk1

Following our last gathering on “Intro to US options” at the Oxford Hotel, there has been request to organise smaller talks to follow up on various investment options.  Many of the investment talks that are advertised in the newspapers and open to the public, cost in the few thousand dollars. For members that are looking to learn from these gurus, they usually register with different institutions, and spend a couple of days at these investment talks. For SilverHairsClub, we are looking at a smaller scale, subject to the speakers, and available and cost of location.  And perhaps, consideration to internet access for participants bringing their minipads, IPADS, Laptops or smartphones.  Maybe not in the 2000 to 3000 SGD range; but in the SGD 300 range and for about 5-8 participants. The structure could include “How to open a trading acccount”, specific to the investment type.  If it is on US options, then the session could include “How to open a US trading account”.  Then, the speaker can focus on the speaker’s strategies and live trades.  And, ample examples and actual trade results.

1.  If you are a regular trader, and would like to teach on a small scale, along the concept above, for a fee, please contact SHE@silverhairsclub.com.

2.  And, as a member, if you are looking for a fellow member who has been trading, please indicate your investment interest, and we will organise small groups, as per above concept.

Please also give your suggestions, so that we can link fellow investors.  And thank you to the members who have shared and helped me structure the concept of investment talks.

Starting Aug 2014, we launch “Boom Boom”, a monthly online game on this forum

fun1gamesprizes

Starting Aug 2014, we shall have a competition in the Club each month.  It’s easy for members to participate.  Simply answer two questions, and if you are the first to answer the two questions correctly, you will get to win a prize.  The winner is decided, based on the first person to respond correctly.  Only one prize per member per year.

  • One of the questions is likely a general or current affairs question.
  • The other question is related to the Club and the answer can likely be found in the Club or in the Club forum.

We have a number of prizes which have been kindly donated by members, responding to our requests.  They are mainly vouchers, which can be sent to the winner via registered Post.  Some are entry tickets, perfume vouchers, restaurant vouchers, etc.  Winners will be asked to send their address to admin@SilverHairsClub.com. Thank you for the gift donations.

So, watch out for the first game.  It will be announced as a Post on this forum.  You are invited to help me organise this game.

Strictly for members.

We see more and more elderly people around us

elderly1elderly2elderly3elderly4

Two Sundays ago, I took this shot of an elderly lady in the park; she was enjoying herself in the middle of the city.  She didn’t say a word, and while I was looking at her, neither did the caregiver say a word.  But, I could sense in the lady the feeling of peace and satisfaction. This picture was not taken in Singapore.

Then, I began to see myself and my fellow SHC friends and members in a wheelchair. Various thoughts came to my mine.  Many of us are fit, perhaps working and enjoying our lives.  We cannot wait to see the rest of the world; so many countries to go and not enough time.  We feel we are still somewhere up there, and that we have made it after all these years; and that no one should tell us what to do, how to do it right and that I am wrong.  Then, one day, we land up in that wheelchair.  No one talks to us, not even the caregiver, if we have one.

Ever since SHC started in 2005, I see many fit and young faces among Club members. Where will we be?

SilverHairs Enterprise has just set up a payment counter

payment counter1payment counter2 payment counter3SilverHairs Enterprise (SHE) intends to be more active.  In the past few years, SilverHairs Enterprise was used as the entity to engage companies, other social groups and government departments. We had not run activities under SHC before. Depending on the activities, SHE may be the entity to run some of the larger activities for SilverHairs and Singaporeans, PRs in general.  SHE is a business entity and is not intended to function at a loss.  Currently, SHE owns the website domain SilverHairsClub.com and all names related to the SilverHairsClub.

Different committee will be identified to run larger gatherings and programs.  Committee members will be compensated.

If there is payment required for the SilverHairs Enterprise activity, payment will be made online via Paypal or credit card.  A button has been set up on the right column of SilverHairsClub;.com.

Thank you to Jassmine Teo, Yew Kwong and Hew Lee for triggering the idea of online payment.

System update to Version 3.9.1 this Sat 5 Jul 2014

announcement2  attention

Hi everybody,

We are going to update our SHC system to a higher revision level Version 3.9.1.

The date for this operation will be Sat 5 Jul 2014 from 0100 hours.  This will take a few hours, and we should back by Sat 8am.  Our guys in India will handle the change and cross-over.  What the changes are, I am not sure of the details.  But, I am told it will not be major.

Good luck.

** We attempted a version update on 5th July; but finally decided to abort the update and revert to the earlier version for simplicity and convenience reasons.

Looking forward to bigger and more activities

idea1   idea3idea4Here is an idea and thought which I like to pursue, together with other interested members.

All our activities have so far been organised by members, and mainly for members.  The EOs have organised these events very well.  Of course, we do have difficulties finding enough EOs or ECs.  There are reasons.

The Club has been successful in this sense, because of the EOs and ECs. I have been thinking about organising more gatherings and events but opening it to other Singaporeans and PRs.  Hopefully, we achieve our aim to have a more balanced sex ratio in our Club activities.  Perhaps, more men will join SilverHairsClub.  We are always short of men in our activities.  This is serious matter.  As a result, we failed to launch Paper Clips.

And hopefully, with an expanded group of participants, we will find more EOs and ECs to organise more SHC activities.  Many members who have found friends in SHC have formed their own private groups, and have their own activities, leaving out the other members in general.  These groups have migrated to UK or Australia, or somewhere.

It is unfortunate that many EOs and ECs feel the frustration and disappointment of negative remarks from members.  While everybody has the right to rebutt and comment, the element of sensitivity is not there.  I shall share with you more some day.

We have to do something or else our active SHC members will dwindle.  I still hope every member will organise one activity during the lifetime of your membership.  If you have not done your part for the club as an EO, please consider.  You may seek assistance from other senior SHCians.

Based on conversations with members, the idea of expanding to Singaore in general is good, but this may not work because we lack EOs and we lack helpers.  Many members are busy, may be still working and unwilling for many reasons; some members feel they prefer to participate in small groups, rather than big groups.  And, some feel they should be compensated for their services doing supporting roles for the Club.

But, I think we should not give up.  The Club still continues with what it has been doing so far, as it has worked.

I am now thinking of engaging our group of retirees, to bring more activities and life to other Singaporeans and PR.  Activities will be extended to all Singapore. These activities will be run under the umbrella of the SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  SHE owns the club blog SilverHairsClub.com and the name “SilverHairsClub”.  Committee members will be compensated.  If you are retired, have the time, and would like to join the SHE committee to organise activities, please let me know.  Feel free to discuss.  You may also whatsapp me.  We are at stage 1 – idea stage.

Members who have questions or ideas, please do raise them.  I love positive thinking.

Keeping in touch with the working world

work6work5work2 work1   Dear members,

Today. many members are still working, either because we are still young or because we would like to continue working. Others have retired after having worked many years in certain industries and in certain positions. But, we still have the knowledge, experience, contacts and skills. Some of us would still like to be in contact with the working and business world.

SilverHairsClub has been very successful with social activities. For example, the walk and cycling groups have been running for years. Our monthly gatherings have been ongoing for many years. We also have many dinner & dance, potlucks, karaoke, singing and social chit chats. Many members have found friends and have come together to travel to various countries. Small groups, and bigger ones, have gathered together for private parties, travel and functions. The social part of SilverHairsClub has been achieved.

Besides getting to know more friends for social reasons, many of us would also like to know friends who have been in the same industry and in similar positions. We have worked a good part of our career. Well, it would be a good time if we can cater to the work, career and business interests of members.

We all come from different industries. Construction, medical, transport, F&B, Hotels, media, IT, Retail, import export, banking, etc.

Many of us have been in positions of management, sales, marketing, administration, HR, enginnering, business, etc.

We could have regular gatherings of different members from different industries and positions. We can exchange business cards. We can introduce ourselves and our background to one another. The club can invite other external organisations to co-organise the events. The opportunities are up to individuals, depending on your interests.

If you are interested to stay in touch with the business and working world, please send an email to shcexp@SilverHairsClub.com with the subject EXP and the following info:

Full name (as per SHC):
Industry:
Position:
Mobile tel:

You will be invited to join our activities with other organisations.
