Are you practising Tai Chi?

Today, being a Sunday, I went to Lumpini Park (Bangkok).  Here, you will find many Thais with their famiies and clans practising all kinds of healthy exercises.  In particular, my focus was on the different groups practising Tai Chi in slow motion, dressed in colourful T-shirts and pants.  Usually, the men and women are spread over an area, as wide as the music can cover.  At the end of the session, the group would congregate for Chinese Tea and continue chatting until the sun bites into their skin.

Are you practising TaiChi, in the morning, and where in Singapore?  How long have you been doing this exercise, and how many people are there in your group?

Pictures of Kelong trip 19-20 April 2008

The Kelong trip was just over last weekend, 19-20 April 2008.  Very exciting, we started at 6am on a Sat morning, and returning to Singapore safe & sound on a late Sun afternoon.  Ronald Koh was our Event Organiser, great job, however he did not catch any big fishes.  He was also the photographer for these pictures.

Instead, the prized fish (a grouper) went to SB Khoo.  Look at the pictures, and see the big smile on his face.  His family had the wok waiting for him when he came home.   SB, tell us how you enjoyed your fish, or you went to the market.

And, by the way, no one claimed the prize for the smallest fish.

It was a fun relaxing overnight kelong trip.  It was definitely a good opportunity for fellow SilverHairs to get to know one another better.  A big thank you to Ronald Koh.  And we look forward to another one next year.  Fishing leaders, please raise your hands.  To view the pictures, click here taken by RonKoh.

Can you write a motor cycle?

Some of you drive or take public transport in Singapore.  For me, I can bicycle but not motor-cycle.  No licence too.  However, there are some remote areas in this world where there are very few cars.   Take Vietnam, Laos or Thailand, for example.   I think it is a good skill to be able to ride a motor cycle.  Helps one to get around quickly from the house to the provision shop. or just to go out and get a newspaper.

Hi everybody, as a show of hands, can you ride a motorcycle and has a license?  If you cannot, I guess the only way is for you to find someone who can, and you be the pillion rider.  You dont need a motor cycle.

Terence Seah

Registration list for motorcycle riders:

  1. Dan Huang – got licence, but needs a pillion rider
  2. Douglas Chan – also got licence
  3. Susan Chang – only wants to be pillion
  4. KC Lau – can ride, but no bike
  5. Jeffrey Lim – got no licence, but can ride one in HCMC.
  6. Janet Chan – waiting to ride as pillion for fun
  7. Pearlynn – no licence, but want to ride as pillion in HCMC
  8. Mary Tan – loves to go motocycling too, in Malaysia
  9. Stephen Tan – loves to join a motocycle holiday
  10. Ah Nee – thinking of getting a licence too, may be pilliion rider
  11. Lina Ng – thinking of being a pillion rider, I guess?
  12. Nolinda – only can be sit at the back
  13. Jane Wong – also thinking of getting a licence
  14. Dolly Lim – afraid this will be a ninja turtle event.  Guess can sit at the back only.
  15. Lily Ho – thinks activity for men only.  No lah, can be pillion too. Wonder can sit in front or not?
  16. Andrew Koh – got licence, long time no cycle.  I think it is ok.  Needs a day to refresh.

Pictures of the 17 April 2008 monthly gathering

Dan Huang, our dedicated photographer, has sent in the photos of the April monthly gathering at Hans Cafe.  Thanks to June Chin who was the event organiser.  We had a fun painting session.

A  typical monthly gathering is usually organised over two sessions; an early one for those who have retired and can come as early as 3pm, and a later session starting at 6pm for those SHCians who have to rush here after work.

How about a change in format?  Think whack, think crazy. Do you have another venue where we can host more than 50 – 80 people?  The preference is the venue should cater for the F&B, not expensive and reasonable variety.  The venue should be flexibile with people numbers, and we avoid committing fixed pax.  If we can make noise, great.

Short-term retirement abroad

I have been keeping a copy of the Straits Times, dated Mar 17, 2008 with the article "Retirement city: Develop low-cost retreat abroad", and think it is still relevant to toy with this subject again.  Please note this thread is not about giving up one’s citizenship or packing up and say goodbye.

Over the last 24 months, I have been asking around, and came to some conclusions why Singapore is the ideal place to retire in.  I may be wrong; but I tend to think there is truth in this observation.

  1. Most of us have families, children or relations in Singapore; and it is not possible to just uproot oneself.
  2. Between the men and the women, almost all women will not even think about the possibility of leaving Singapore for good.  For the men, the percentage is slightly higher, but as a family unit, the family will not leave Singapore for any of the nearby countries.
  3. The idea of selling the Singapore property may sound attractive, and together with the CPF can make one feel like a millionaire in another land.  Reality is the roof is still a required shelter for many years to come, for the children, parents or even ourselves.
  4. Health insurance, other kinds of insurances tend to provide cover, if one is living in Singapore.  Depending on the T&C, hospitalisation and other health care may not be covered under existing insurances.
  5. The idea of short-term living overseas, maybe 3 months, in nearby countries, sound like an attraction because of lower cost of living, lower medical costs and travel opportunities.

I tend to like short-term living overseas; yet, I feel sometimes it is not practical because of the above factors.  Lower costs overseas and travel opportunities are not enough drivers.  Shorter-term of 7 – 14 days overseas seem to be more practical and feasible.  What are your views?

Men’s night – Tue 20 May 2008 evening

Men’s nite is confirmed for Tue 20 May 2008 evening

Not too sure if a Men’s night is a great idea to be discussed on this website; but it definitely is a desired and hmm why-not? event.  The idea of a men’s night popped up recently, in response to the participation at the  thai disco, the geylang trip and the imbalance of the sexes during main activities.

So, I pick up this discussion point, and let’s see if we can really attract more men to an event, if it was purely a men’s night.  Nothing sexist about it; but a pure survey turned into a real event.  So far, informal feedback hmm pretty exciting.

So, all the men would you come to a men’s night?  Got no idea yet where the venue or what the night would be all about.  So, let’s start with a date, Tue 20 May 2008 evening.  I shall be in town.

Share your ideas on what we can do.  We will probably pick one of the following.  A night out at a old fashion or oldies bar.  Watching a soccer match together in a kopitiam.  Having an investment discussion before the US market opens.  Or having a karaoke session somewhere.

Maybe business and more serious issues bring in the men

Some time ago, I broached the subject of why more ladies than men at gatherings, Ronald Koh asked if I have too much time on my hands.  Yes, RonK was right, I do have free time.  And, in reality, it seemed so.  many ladies are active in social activities.  And some in charity activities.

Nowadays, I find more men coming into this forum.  We have KT, Tim L, AndrewK, Ronald W and Steven C as regular contributors on everything under the sun.  Yew Kwong, Ron-Oz, RonK, Robert Q, Ron Lai, Jonathan, DouglasC, Roland, Dan H, CharlesW are also regulars, and now we have the more business oriented men joining us.

We had some other men joining us before on this forum, but dont hear so much from them for a while.

Is the forum too strict?  Should we relax a bit?  I think we should aim to have more men.  Our membership show at least 40% men.  Maybe, business chitchat is the way.  Guys, business talks are ok.  They are not taboos.  This thread hopes to encourage more men to create new ideas for SilverHairsClub.

“Should comments be open to the public”

As usual, I like to share thoughts with the general membership.  Last night, some members sugested to me that comments on this forum should only be readable by members only.  I think there is a view that only POSTs should be readable by the general internet community.   As you know, websites are open to anybody in Singapore and the world.  Of course, restrictions can be made.

I am not an expert in website design.  I dont know how; but I guess changes can be made.

What is your opinion?

Conceptualising SHC Corporate as the next step

SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com will continue to retain its current format and scenario.  Based on feedback over the last two years, membership to SHC shall remain unchanged.  The current rules and taboos will apply.  We will not formalise ourselves under the societies act.  We will continue to be good senior citizens, and enjoy the fun of SilverHairsClub.com.  And, all SHC activities will continue to be initiated by the individual, and participated by other SHC individuals.

The next step is to conceptualise another entity which will enable us to be recognised as an institution or corporation.  Other than a society, it is very likely we will see the initiation of a company which will support social enterprise for Seniors in Singapore.  A number of SHC members have talked about having a corporate entity; but again, we did not go too far, because in the last two years, we were focused on registering SHC as a society/club.

This Post is going to discuss ideas, business and concepts to support SE opportunities for SHC and Seniors in Singapore.  Definitely not a social thread.  If you are interested to read and participate in this thread, please use the password "corporate".  The discussion thread is just above this Post.  I shall also invite a few individuals who have strong views to participate in this discussion.

We will likely complete this discussion and make a decision by 30 June 2008 on how we will proceed from here.

Pictures of the 2nd Dinner & Dance, 29 Mar 2008

Hi Caroline, Dolly and fellow SHCians,

I was hoping to have the photographs up on this forum last night.  Overslept, and too tired last night.  Well here they are.  http://www.silverhairsclub.com/SHC/SHC080329/.  The photographs were taken by Dan Huang and Yew Kwong.  Supereb shots.

No prize for getting it right, but can you recognise the names of everybody who came last night?  Which picture do you like best?  Which was the funniest shot?   Can you suggest which picture or which picture crop we can use to replace the banner of our website?  Alright, let your thoughts run wild.

Dream and let your ideas come true

All SHC activities are organised by SilverHairsClub members, not external groups.  Todate, we have seen walking, cycling, IT classes, badminton, tennis, line and social dancing, fishing, flea mart, overseas travel, overnight somewhere, dinner & dance, talent-time, games day, bowling, business discussions, investment talks, cooking,  health groups, jobs and retirement village ideas.

Come, don’t be shy.  Big or small ideas.  Dreams or realities.  Talk with a fellow SHCian.  Still, not sure? Share under category "Reflections".

Every SHCian has the opportunity to lead an event or hobby.  You can be sure that there are many others with similar interests as yours.  I may be dreaming; but yours can be a reality.

on behalf of Charles Wee, and organisers.

What is classified as a SHC activity?

Frequently, I have been asked if non-SHC members can join our functions.  So, I like to clarify as follows.  For a gathering or activity to be classified as a SHC activity,  it can only be attended by SHC members.

At the same time, I would also encourage SHCians to organise their own gatherings or activities, and still make use of this forum.  However, please do not call or classify the activity or gathering as a SHC activity, if non-SHC members are invited to attend.  You are encouraged to invited other SHC members to attend your activities and particiate in your interests.

I hope this clarifies "What is an SHC activity?".

SHC March monthly gathering – Sat, 15 Mar 2008

Hi all SHCians,

For the first time, we will combine a monthly gathering, with another activity "SHC Flea mart".  Originally, the plan was to hold the monthly gathering at the Han’s cafe and Cake house at Great Eastern Centre.  But, since then, we have now firmed the location of the 1st SHC Flea mart,  at Bali Lane, we shall combine the two events.  The hope is that once a year, we will combine one monthly gathering with the SHC Flea Mart.

We have a 99% chance these two events are ON.  The likely dates are 8, 9 or 15 March, afternoon.  Please note these dates as the announcement will be made very very soon.

This monthly gathering strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Flea Mart buyers will come from members and the public.

Looking for Montfort School classmates

I started my Primary One at Montfort School in 1962.  If you have been in this school for the six years of primary education and four years of Secondary, come join in.  I remembered some of us still have unfinished fights behind the wall, and the good old days when we go down Ponggol Road to catch "Bua Ki crabs".

For those who do not know, in those days, Montfort School is a boys school, all the way to Secondary Four.  Then, that’s when we get a shock to find girls during the next two years of Pre-U.  And, that’s when the results start to drop.

How to write a Post or start a new thread?

Some of you may be wondering how to initiate a new Post or a new thread?  As a SHC member, you can easily write a Post.  Can be almost any topic, club taboos should be noted.  If you have a thought and just like to share with other members, use the category "Reflections".  Do not repeat a Post.

Post should be categorised, or the Post may not be published.

When a member responds to your Post, you will get an email alert.  Please reply to that member on this forum.  Members who start a Post, and fail to reply those who respond to their Post within 30 days, would be deleted from the club membership.  This ensures the database is kept updated.

Have fun.

Travel Club – open discussion

The Travel Club idea has started, with some brilliant ideas from Joan (Perth), Mary (Perth), Ronald Wie (retirement living), KT Wong and EleanorC.

On 4 Jan 2008, KT Wong called a meeting to discuss the idea of a Travel Club.  I think we should take the various ideas further, and openly discuss the different ideas on this forum.  We should discuss the different opportunities here, until one or two solid directions appear on the horizon.  And, we can then put the ideas on a commercial platform.  It is always difficult to move further, after the small group discussions, if participants see no commercial gains.  I feel this project can benefit members who have retired, and would like to get into something financially meaningful, besides enjoying the fun of a Travel Club.

Topics of interests can include:  accommodatioin for incoming travellers, tourist guiding, niche packages, an online Travel Club portal to take reservations, promotions and marketing, participation by SilverHairsClub members, costs, IR opportunities, etc.

Initially, we might get off hand in the discussion, but we will finally find an angle.  So, if you feel you like this discussion topic, and are interesting to participate in the Travel Club, keep joining us on this thread.  For SilverHairs with experience in travel or property rental, please give  us your guidance.  Do you see a business opportunity in a Travel Club?

If you personally have an area you can contribute to the Travel Club, please raise your hand, and make sure we see you.  We are not expecting a free service, although we should be conscious of supply and demand forces.  Let’s start.

* Comments which stray away from the subject may be deleted.  We will close this thread for a consoidation on 31 March 2008.

Some thing for sale or some announcements to make

Hi everybody,  we shall try to give 2GreenDots.com another go.  It has not been successful, since it was first launched.  I guess there are a few reasons why ta boleh jalan.  Suggestions for improvements welcome.

If you have a business, and have a special offer or % discount to SHC members, please do let us know.   An apartment for rent, a car for sale, a seminiar or talk, rose for sale, special spa offer, books, tuition, looking for teachers, kueh kuehs for sale, delivery services, etc.

Valentine Day and Valentine wishes

These days, I know it is not only men who send roses to their wives or girl-friends.  Children can also send flowers to their mums.  Bosses can also send bouquets to their colleaques or juniors.  Friends can also send flowers to friends on this day.

It is not always easy to bribe the florist not to reveal who the sender is, because she always wants the sender’s details.  I tried once, and said to myself that I would not want to do it again.  The credit card always gives you away.   Not true, I try it another time, this time paying with cash.  The receiver called the florist which happened to be just downstairs my office.  She was able to describe the sender.

Valentine Day is fun, and an appropriate time to send our love wishes to the people around us.  So, go ahead and make your Valentine wishes for him or her.

Terence Seah

If we organise the SHC Flea Mart, would you participate?

This is an exercise to determine the degree of interest in the SHC Flea Mart.

We have not identified the venue, cost and date/time to launch the first SHC Flea Mart.  However, I think we should try to determine the degree of interest.  And, let’s also say we have the car boot sales running side by side.  If you have an idea to take part as a seller in the SHC Flea Mart, please add your name here.  If you have something in mind which you like to sell, please do indicate too.  And, make it fun.  If two persons like to share a spot, it’s fine too.  Do note the buyers would be the public, overseas visitors and SHC members.

Hope we can make this event a truly SHC grown project, and fulfil our objective to provide a platform to meet new and more friends.

Chinese New Year wishes

The mood is here.  And as SHCians, we have lots of memories, with each of us having at least 45 years celebrating this long Chinese history and Lunar New Year festival.  Flash backs to the days igniting crackers on the ground, giving oranges to our parents, pasting red decors everywhere around the house and giving angpows to the young ones.

You may like to send your New Year wishes to someone in the club.  Go ahead.  Don’t be shy.  This forum accepts all languages and dialects.

Pictures of 17 Jan 2008 SilverHairsClub Gathering

SilverHairsClub Jan event was held at the Hans Cafe on 17 Jan 2008.  The gathering was divided into two groups – one, the retired SilverHairs and second, the still-working SilverHairs.

Do you like the arrangement of the place?  What about the F&B arrangements?  Share with us your ideas and thoughts for the next event.  How should we go about having a topic of discussion here.  Or, should we continue with no agenda?  What about your views of having two groups?

It is very likely we will hold the next gathering at the Hans cafe, on a Saturday afternoon, and have about 200 SHC members attending.  Would you like to raise your hand, and be the next Event Organiser at the Hans Cafe?

Please click here to see the photos, taken by our photographer Dan Huang.

Why more ladies than men at gatherings?

At the last SHC monthly gathering at Hans Cafe @ Great Eastern Bldg on Thurs, 17 Jan, I noticed there were 60% men and 40% women.  There was no agenda, and everybody was free to chat and meet new friends.  Joining the different tables, I hear serious chatter on work, business, online trading and outdoor activities.

However, for most other social gatherings, ladies usually form the larger pie.  Their voices tend to be louder.  The conversation tends on focus on dancing, afternoon tea meetups, sports, beauty ideas and quiet meet-ups.

Our membership has an approx 50:50 ratio.  Anybody got any suggestion and feedback on how to create an environment for equal participation.  To encourage old and new members’ feedback, please respect other members’ comments and opinion.
