What can an individual do to bring about peace to the world?

When you read or browse through newspapers in the morning, you will agree with me that the world is racked by fighting, killing, scam, fraudulence, hostility , the world peace is beyond our control but there is plenty an individual can do, any input?

Advertising on the SHC website is not allowed

The SilverHairsClub.com website is very well visited by thousands of Singaporeans and the internet community.  It is SHC’s home.  It serves as a platform and a venue for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.  SHCians can organise events at any venue, and use SilverHairsClub.com as the communications medium.  SHCians can share their thoughts, organise their special interests groups, discuss private business ideas, plan games, talk retirememnt plans, travel, etc.  There is almost no restriction, except for the club taboos.

A number of SHCians as well as external organisations have asked to place their events or information about their activities on our website.   Some organisations have also asked members to help place promotional and marketing informaton here.  A couple of members get pretty angry and nasty when their requests are rejected.  And, some even challenge the decision, as the use of this forum is free.   Some members do view that promotion of external organisations or services is for information of members, and it is their right to dessiminate the marketing or promotion informaton.  We do not have companies as members; only individual memberships.

As a guide, we draw a line between clear advertising vs venues/activities organised by members.  Very often, the line cannot be easily distinguished.  We are always supportive of Event Organisers EOs, who organise activities for members, and as such, there may be a cross-over the line.  As such, decisions to publish any promotional or advertising materials are final.  This website is free for members to use; and I would ask all members to note that advertising on the website is not allowed.

Craft Day

Hi All

If free with nothing to do on Sun 15 Nov, drop by at my condo flat to participate in or just watch artists at work. It’s a very informal gathering and perhaps a chance to meet SHCians who I haven’t met or to meet up again.

Two art classes are organised: Starting at 1 pm – 3 pm is a Batik Painting course which is of 2 parts, with the 2nd part from 3.30 – 6.30 pm. From 3 – 6 pm is Painting on small brush or mirror. Both classes are taught by art teachers who are friends of mine.

If you are interested to learn other things or perhaps to get a designer to do flyers, wedding cards or a collage of your photos for your travels etc, you may be able to meet people who can assist you.

Just let me know so that I’m aware of the number coming. You can email me at joanwong2002@hotmail.com  ( after 4 Nov as I’m back in S’pore then).

Cheers

Potluck II-Homecooked Desserts n Finger foods Potluck

All righty! The sequel to the first Homecooked Potluck will be happening sometime next month!

This time round, it’s all homecooked specialty desserts and finger food. Now before everyone starts bringing in ordinary desserts like green bean soups or yiou tiow or simple agar agar or soon kuay, I want to emphasize that the item has to be different from those stuff that can be easily obtained from food centres.
For example, if it’s going to be yiou tiow, it has to be something extraordinary that is made with it, or if it’s going to be agar agar, there must be something unusual about it, not just simple coloured and flavoured agar agar.
It would be good if potential participants can come up with a suggestion of two or more items which will be made into a ‘menu’.

Since it’s desserts and finger foods, please ensure that everyone gets a bite of each item.

Date : 21st November 2009

Time:  3 pm to 7 pm

Venue: My Place in Pasir Ris,St 52 (off Drive 1 or Drive3).

It’s open to both sexes, but if participants are coming as a couple, each person has to present an item.

I have a mahjong table and cards, so we could have some games if anyone is interested, but keep in mind that theses are secondary activities to the main agenda, which is eating, sharing recipes and socialising.

Primrose Kok – Profile

Hello,

I am a new member just joined SHC recently.  I am a retired school teacher in my late fifties, still single.  During my leisure, I indulge in avid reading, playing badminton, attending dance classes (line dancing), as well as watching television, cross-stich embroidery and cooking Cantonese food.

I have a cheerful personality, though rather aloof or proud in hectic youthful teaching days.

I will be participating in a few of the activities organised by SHC.  I hope to fine sincere, matured friends and enjoy their company.

Cheers

Are you being appreciated?

Caregiving can be such a rewarding experience, looking after your family is your duty, but that aspect is somethings hard and tedious to focus on when you feel your efforts aren’t being recognized.

Do you feel fully appreciated by the person or persons you care for? Do your siblings and other family members appreciate all you’re doing? If so, what do they do to show your appreciation? If not, what do you wish they’d do?"

Share your thoughts and experiences……………………

Joke of the Day

Joke of the Day:
Ah Pek and Ah Ma were lying in bed one night.
The husband was falling asleep but the wife felt romantic and wanted to talk. She said, "You used to hold my hand when we were courting."
Wearily, he reached across, held her hand for a second
and tried to get back to sleep.
A few moments later she said, "Then, you used to kiss me."
Mildly irritated, he reached across,
gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down to sleep.
Thirty seconds later she said, "Then, you used to bite my neck."
Angrily, he threw back the bed covers, got out of bed and walk away.
"Where are you going?" she asked.

"To get my teeth lah!"

Oct Investment Update

Dear all,

I have wirtten a post yesterday morning but discovered now that it’s content is empty pending review. There is a bug in the system.

So here goes again…

1. Instead of organising our own meeting this month, I am inviting our kakis and those who are interested in investing to join a talk on 24 Oct 09 at Phillip Investor Center at Shan Rd/Balestier RD from 9.30am to 12.30pm. It is free, and light refreshment will be served. I will conduct training on POEMS for those who are keen and willing to stay back for 30mins after the meeting. Plse reply to this post, thanks.

2. I have started Twitter braodcast and you are invited to "follow me" for stock market news, stock alerts, US indexes and STI directions, stock chart analyses, US econmic data, etc. You can join Twitter at www.twitter.com and "Search" for benfoo88 and "Follow Me" and read all my braodcasts or tweets. This is faster and I will try to keep it short and relevant to help you in the decisions to invest. I have made some recommendation before opening yesterday morning after the STI trashing on Monday and DOW trashing last Friday.

Cheers, Ben

Scam Alert!!!

Somehow my e-mail account and mobile telephone were "cloned". Scammers used them to send e-mails and/or sms messages to the contacts in my e-mail contacts’ and mobile telephone’s listings that I was stranded in London and needed financial assistance urgently. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!. Presently, I am in Singapore and was ever away in London.

If you have received, purportedly from me, an e-mail or sms respective to the above, PLEASE, PLEASE JUST IGNORE IT AS IT"S A SCAM.

My sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. Thank you, one and all, for your kind understanding.

Best regards

Strong EarthQuake in Padang

I have received many calls, sms and emails after the strong earthquake in Padang on 30 Sept 2009 evening to check whether I was in Padang or get hurt or not. I appreciate your concern and the care and love you people shower on me. I would like to post it so that I can inform more people about what is happening in Padang especially to SHC who have travelled to Padang and Bukit Tinggi.

For the past 4 days I have been calling our lobster friends Mr Tham and Ms Ho frantically on their mobiles and home lines but not accessible. To my great relief I received a call this morning from Mr Tham and Ms Ho saying that they are safe and are in Solok now. Their house in Padang had collapsed totally. Luckily the workers have not returned from Hari Raya and nobody is hurt. They told me that the quake is so strong that it was literally shaking constantly. Although they are seasoned by the on and off quakes in the past, this time was so strong that they were scared and terrified.

The hotel which Terence and I stayed in Padang, Hotel Mariani (oposite Hotel Bumiminang) is collapsed totally. One Singaporean, John Lee was buried in the rubble for 25 hours when Hotel Mariani collapsed. He was alive and rescued. Long live to him.

We hope and pray that Padang (and many other surrounding towns) and its people will overcome this natural disaster. Amen.
