Venue venue and still venue – Where to conduct classes

Hi All,
While we are aware that there are lots of talented members willing to come forward to conduct classes charging a minimal cost for materials and some extra.  It is always a great challenge as to where they can find a venue to host these classes.

This morning, while having breakfast with Karen – she was showing me those nail arts that she had done on her nails.  Wow, is really beautiful and she is willing to teach but again venue is another setback.

I always wanted to try putting a false eyelashes but yet to master this skill and always hope that someone will be able to guide me along.. todate, had been unsuccessfully discard at least 10 pairs of falsies due to no proper guidance given.

Of cos, some of you will definitely tell me, aiyah, go to youtube and watch video, sure ai sai 1.. well at least, I know that this does not worked out for me…

Having said all these, are any members out there able help to provide any info for venue (FOC) or cost at minimal charge – we want to hear from all of you….

Cheers… Dolly

Dear all

The Ageless Theatre presents Faces (Phases) of Love, a play about the power of love and the search for that special someone. It comprises four short skits, including one about a lonely widow’s love for her deceased husband, and another about four mahjong buddies reminiscing about love and loss.

The venue is the Marine Parade Community Club Theatrette. Each ticket costs $15. As contact numbers of the organisers cannot be displayed here, if you wish to join a couple of us for this performance, you may transfer funds to my POSB Savings Account 159-13164-5 and I can purchase the tickets on your behalf.

What is interesting is that the Ageless Theatre comprises people aged 43 and above.

Any play enthusiasts?

Joy :)

Mid Autumn Kok and High Tea – 29 Sep (Sun) 1 – 5 pm

Mid Autumn festival is traditionally held annually in the month of September and October. The official date for year 2013 is September 19. Moon cakes abounds in shops all over towns and carrying of lanterns lends gaiety to the occasion. What is the significance of this festival and how does it affect the life of each of us? Many folklore are told and it would be good to hear from those who are familiar to share with us here. One fable was those how it came about.

‘The Zhuang people, for example, have an ancient fable saying the sun and moon are a couple and the stars are their children, and when the moon is pregnant, it becomes round, and then becomes crescent after giving birth to a child. These beliefs made it popular among women to worship and give offerings to the moon on this evening’.

Well, that only half of the story. We are here to join in the celebration and I have booked a nice place.

Hilarious Hours of Fun and Song – 29 Sep (Sun) 1 – 5 pm

Now that the Mandarin class is under able hands I shall focus on another topic of interest. Book reading seems out of place for us oldies. Back to the drawing board and losing more hair in the process. Singalong session will be encouraged throughout. Everybody will have to sing in groups.
One of my policy from day one was to organize event that can reach to as many member as possible. How else can we get the new member to come forward to become active and to play a greater in adding vibrancy to the Club?
Four hours for singing.  An opportunity to meet new friend here.

Date: September 29 (Sunday)
Time: 1:00pm-5:00pm
Venue: Kolam Ayer CC, Geylang Bahru (11 minutes walk from Potong Pasir MRT)
Cost: $6.00 if we have 10 pax, $3.00 if we achieve 20 pax or pro-rated.
Hot water provided, bring your own beverage packages and some snacks for High Tea.

Depending on respond, we may have it on monthly. Please indicate whether you are coming for one or both session.

EO, Dan

Should EO enjoy a free ride?

Our intention for the event in question was to pro-rate the cost based on the number of participants. One of us suggested to collect $5.00 from each, why?. The cost was mentioned in the post and 33 pax signed up to attend but what if we don’t achieve this number, who will bear the difference. The EOs are at risk here because no money was collected upfront.
Actual person attended was 29 with 25 pax contributing and 4 abstained. Leftover of $25 was used to defray part of the dinner cost. Was the EOs justified to do that? Let’s us consider other considerations, 2 of us went to recce the place at our own cost and the unsung hero here is Susan who borne the cost of preparing porridge and mee-hoons for about 30 pax which I figure may amount to $25 considering she took a train from Jurong and catch a taxi from Kallang MRT to the venue.

What I can say here is we answer to nobody but for future events we like to invite ideas and opinions.

Not guilty!
Dan/Daniel/Susan/Joy

Mind your language.

To avoid any confusion I shall start a new post here. How many of us have a desire to improve ourselves whether to speak a new language, a new hobby or a new pastimes. Do we live with regret that certain things in our life should be achieve and experience but due to our laziness and procrastination we lose sight of our dreams and desires.

Learning Mandarin have been a goal I have set out to do but I did nothing and nothing happens. Now we have our own Daniel Chan who have kindly step out to help us. The date and the time was set.. Daniel being a lecturer himself will make it easy for us. Whether learning by rote or through karaoke singing he will guide us.

This is also an opportunity to meet and learn and laugh our hearts out. Who want to join us?

What i like to see happening at the Club?

We may have voice this before but I feel it time to hear it again and better still if someone take the initiatives.

A matter close to my heart is to start a Mandarin speaking session for those wanting to improve their Mandarin conversation with one another.

The other idea is to start a Book Club for those avid readers who want to share their passion for reading and to encourage one another with setting goal to read more books.

As with any concern, just to put up a post can be life threatening. We worry for the responses, we worry how is the reaction and we just worry worry.

Give your encouragement here and if there is enough show of hands I will buck up and do something.

Do you have an electronic sewing machine? and can provide a sewing service?

Hi fellow members,

I would like to find someone among our club membership, who has an electronic sewing machine.  It should have the capability of storing the SilverHairsClub logo and the words "SilverHairsClub" in its memory.

In the early past, we had explored a T-shirt for members, but we have not been successful because we were unable to confirm the numbers.  At the same time, there are so many varied brand names and designs.  We gave up the idea long ago.  The idea surfaced again, so let’s give it another go.

However, we do have the SHC logo and an established brand name "SilverHairsClub".

What I am looking for is a member who would offer this sewing services, laying the logo or the name "SilverHairsClub" on a T-shirt or blouse or skirt, provided by the SHC member.  This can be an old or new shirt or blouse, any colour, any design or size.

I am hoping this person with the sewing service can provide this service for a fee of $4.  However, members will pay $3 for each logo imprinted.  No pick up service.  I have not thought further of other details.

Meantime, if you can provide this service, please contact me at terences@SilversHairsClub.com.

Badminton Game in the west, Thur 13 Sep 2012

Hi all, today we had our un-usual badminton game at CDAN clubhouse (Bukit Batok) – courtesy of Ron Teo. The multi purpose hall has 3 courts, and since we are the only ones playing, we had the whole place to ourselves. However, the lighting is not bright enough for silver haired players – so we have unanimously voted that badminton game should remain AT Bukit Gombak on Thursdays from 10am to 12.00 noon.

The next session is this Thursday – 13 September. Come and sweat it out – Cheers

A “Family Day” in the thinking, before end 2012

Ever since the Club started, we have always maintained that all its activities can only be attended by members, and that attendees must be 45 and over.  This rule will continue to be adopted.

However, many SHC members are still young, and may have young children or grandchildren to look after. There are also cases where their brothers and sisters are still young, below 45.  And, of course, there are the grandfathers or grandmothers who are not able to participate in SHC; but from time to time, may want to enjoy a family day, with other grandparents.

The objective of the Family Day is to provide an occasion and place whereby family members get to meet other family members over a 2D1N or 3D2N affair.

  1. First, as a rule, we will continue to maintain the over 45 age and events can only be attended by registered members.
  2. Second, after some feedback from senior members, I am thinking that we can have a Family day.  This will be held once a year; we can have a committee.  Venue and price will have to be approved, prior to the acceptance of a Family Day.  In principle, the cost should be reasonable and low. Activities will be organised by an organising committee.  Every item or event must be organised by a SHC member, no external individuals or company.
  3. Third, the Family day will be open to members of SilverHairsClub, their brothers, sisters, grandfather and grandmother, children and grandchildren.
  4. Fourth, where possible, during the Family Day, there should be events for SHC members who come along and want to meet up with other SHC members only.

To set the ball rolling, and to set the concept right from the beginning, I would take the lead in the first Family Day.  Future EOs of family day will be appointed.  So, let’s get the ball running.

  • The first event will have to be held where there is a seaside.  There should also be a swimming pool.
  • The dates should cover a (Fri, Sat or Sun) or (Sat, Sun or Mon).
  • The venue should have accommodation, twin, family or dorm.
  • Food and drinks should be provided by the venue; or organised by the committee.  Eats can include BBQ, buffets, and cooking sessions.
  • Accepted young activities should include beach and water games, ball games, swimming pool, athlete sports, walks, card and indoor games.  An event will only proceed if there is an organiser or activity leader.
  • Accepted adult activities can include karaoke, talentime, meditation, talks, grooming, dancing, fishing or snorkelling.
  • There should be no plans for shopping or city tours.

We will take the next two months to work on the following:

  • The location, which would be outside Singapore, maybe in Johore.
  • We would target 80 pax in two coaches or even 120 pax in three coaches.
  • Preferably outside rainy season.
  • A target price would be SGD 100 or lower per person, twin sharing.  A discount for participants staying in shared accommodation.
  • The date should be this year, before end 2012.
  • If you like to volunteer to organise an activity, feel free to raise your hand.

Let’s crack and brainstorm, from now to 15 Aug 2012.  Thank you to members who did the initial groundwork and discussion.

Terence Seah

Updates:

  1. Members can pool car resources and drive to the Family day.  The coach fee will be taken off. Do share the petrol and toll fees.
  2. The most likely venue for now is Desaru area.
