SHC Business Networking session, Sat 29 Mar 2014 (1100 – 1300 hrs), Hans Cafe, Upp Pickering.

network3networking1   networking2This year, we shall organise our Business Networking session as follows.  During the session, members are encouraged to discuss business opportunities, share ideas and plans, make business friends, exchange business name cards and find partners.  Rules of the Club apply.

In previous years, we had the Business Round Table, where we gather around a dinner table, at a restaurant and members take turns to introduce themselves and their businesses. Sometimes, early comers have to wait for the late comers.

This time around, participants will mingle as and when they like, and with whoever they wish to discuss with.  Participants can sit or stand anywhere. Depending on the venue, there may be pre-arranged food and drinks.  If not, you can always buy from the counter.

For all Business Networking sessions, there will be a non-refundable administrative fee, $3 per person. Unregistered participants pay $5 per person.

The coming session will be held on Sat 29 Mar 2014,  from 1100 hrs to 1300 hrs.  The place will be announced soon.  If you are interested, please register your name here. The place is now Hans Cafe, Upper Pickering.

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a baffling mystery in our lifetime

aeroplane 4aeroplane 3aeroplane 5

(Click on the pictures for an enlarged view)

Latest radar investigation has shifted from the seas around South East Asia to the Andaman Sea and now the vast Indian Ocean.  No traces of debris from the jetliner. It’s more than a week, and satellites from the US and China are still combing their images. Ships, destroyers, helicopters, planes are all deployed and countries around the world have offered to help.

How can such a modern jetliner disappear from radar screens, without a trace of where it was heading to?  Let’s give ourselves sometime to discuss this occurrence, something that has happened so shockingly in our lifetime.

A story

To share a story I read yesterday

A young guy left his home, country and went working in a foreign country. He got a job and a girlfriend there. He never talk to his girlfriend about his home, even she asked him many time.

After 4 years, something happened that the guy has to come home to handle. He came with his girlfriend. He told his girlfriend there is only his mother in his home and refused to talk anything more about his mother. This gave his girlfriend an opinion that his mother is not a nice, easy get along lady.

To his girlfriend’s surprise, when his mother first opened the door to welcome them, she found that his mother was a very nice lady – kind, sweet and soft talking ……, she is a devout Buddhist, but his boyfriend refused to do any talk with his mother. The girlfriend don’t know why, because she knows her boyfriend is not such kind of person. She asked her boyfriend why, but he refused to disclose.

Due to her curiosity, she asked the mother what had happen to get them into such a situation. The mother told her the following story:

“I has a daughter. The relation between the brother and sister is very good, they love each other very much. 4 years ago, a tragedy happened, my daughter was raped and killed by the neighborhood boy (raper). The boy was caught and was sentenced to death. But I pleaded the court to change the death sentence to jail term. My son cannot forgive me for what I did, left home and not contact me any more”

The girlfriend asked the reason why she do the pleading, the mother said: “When the death sentence is announced, I noticed the deep sorrow in the raper mother’s eyes. I think should give the raper’s mother a chance. so I do the pleading, but my son never give me a chance to explain to him”.

The girlfriend told her boyfriend the reason of his mother, but her boyfriend still could not forgive her mother’s doing

At last, the guy finished the thing he has to handle and intended to leave. His girlfriend tried her last effort to convince him at least to talk to his mother once. The guy promised.

To start the talk, the guy said to his mother: “If you can give me a satisfy answer for my question, may be I will forgive you. In these 4 years, I always think of the raper, I feel the pain in my heart, then you will also appear to my mind, and I cannot stop to hate what you have done. Can you tell me what is your feelings when you think of the raper these years”?

The mother silenced for a while and gave the following answer:
“Sorry son, I cannot give you an answer, because I never think of the raper after the court. What I always think of are the time when your sister is around. The time we live happy together. This will give me warm in my heart. So sorry son, I don’t have the answer you want”

The ending of the story …..it is not important, you can set your own ending for it

I don’t think this is a good story, as what the mother do is far from the human nature (not much people in this world can forgive such kind of thing). What his son done is more prone to human.

Why I share this story, because I have experience similar to it (just a little bit, not so extreme). In a few years back, many people talk about positive think and say they always do positive thinking. But I think positive thinking (also forgiveness) is not a human nature, especially when something not good, serious. Usually the thinking is negative and hate.

I am not a positive thinking guy, actually I am quite negative, but I seldom hate (not because of forgiveness, but because of laziness). As I am lazy, there is not much thing can bothering me.

There is one thing that bothering me for nearly 30 years, and when my thinking of this thing change from negative to positive, I got the peace of mine.

The thing that bothering me is my wife’s jealous, I never fooling around since she is my girlfriend (not due to loyalty but due to laziness, why be so trouble to get two or more girlfriend). I think my wife’s jealous is unreasonable and make me annoyed. This happen even when she passed away, whenever I think of her, I will think of her jealous.

But after I join SHC and know more friends (once upon a time, I tried to be friendly but failed). A new thinking come to my mind. I guess her jealous is due to I have not paid enough attention to her.

If this is mentioned in an Elvis Presley’s song, it should be: “May be I didn’t treat her, quite as good as I should have,
May be I didn’t love her, quite as often as I could have.
May be I didn’t hold her, all those lonely, lonely time.
And I guess I never tell her, I so happy that she’s mind.”

so she used jealous to attract my attention. Even this is not the case, Her jealous should be because she care about me very much, why should I bother?? After I change my thinking, whenever I think about her, I feel warm.

Think positive can make people happy. If you can, try it, don’t just talk it.

Venue venue and still venue – Where to conduct classes

Hi All,
While we are aware that there are lots of talented members willing to come forward to conduct classes charging a minimal cost for materials and some extra.  It is always a great challenge as to where they can find a venue to host these classes.

This morning, while having breakfast with Karen – she was showing me those nail arts that she had done on her nails.  Wow, is really beautiful and she is willing to teach but again venue is another setback.

I always wanted to try putting a false eyelashes but yet to master this skill and always hope that someone will be able to guide me along.. todate, had been unsuccessfully discard at least 10 pairs of falsies due to no proper guidance given.

Of cos, some of you will definitely tell me, aiyah, go to youtube and watch video, sure ai sai 1.. well at least, I know that this does not worked out for me…

Having said all these, are any members out there able help to provide any info for venue (FOC) or cost at minimal charge – we want to hear from all of you….

Cheers… Dolly

Diabetes mellitus MB2 – Is it curable ? OR is only Controllable ?

Is very happy to learn Terence is recovering well from recent incident. At same time from post, some of our silverian are experiencing DM.

I was diagnosed with DM2 in Jan 2011 during a routine blood test ( The 1st time ) check at polyclinic. A first dose of Metformin made me felt very lousy. 2nd dose left a funny taste in my  tongue. Tried unsuccessfully for 2 days to get the doctor to change medication. Left Singapore for job project without taking medicine along.. Stayed in the Kalimantan for 10 weeks clearing vegetation. During the 2nd week onwards, I added a fruit ( the local call Cainito ) to dialy diet. because I like it after seeing native mothers feeding their babies as milk.

March 2011 I return to my job in China . I went to my regular  Chinese sinsen for consultation on DM . He prescribed whole Chicken Breast ( absulute without  fats and skin ) cook with 20 lime ( cut into half ) – 2 and a half-bowl water cook till 1 bowl soup, drink 3 times a week . My blood HBAlc was 6.00 by Chinese hospital

December 2011, I went back to the same singapore Polyclinic for blood test ( test supposed to be June 2011) . My HBAlc was 6.10. The Doctor was excited that his medication was working. This time he precribed 2 x 500 mg Metformin saying is necessary to keep HBAlc around 3.6  I think this doctor is mad and of course I refuse to take the medicine

June 2012 as scheduled, My HBAlc report was 6.00. This time I told the doctor I had not been taking medicine by showing him the intack medicine precribed to me.. My subsequent blood HBAlc in Sept 2012, Jan 2013 and Aug 2013  was 6.00 N 6.10.  For the whole  2013   I didnot eat  the fruit cainito. I have stop drinking breast chicken soup since Aug 2013 to prepare for the next blood test in March 2014.

For those with DM condition and wish to try eating Cainito, Joint our walk and I will show you the Cainito Tree beside finding them in Our Singapore Botanical Garden. Or jiont Coffee chats and I will show you the write up on the Medicinal Uses of Cainito.

Life of a Taxi Driver

It was the last thing on my mind to become one. Being past 60 and unemployable I have decided to take up taxi driving. It probably the only job we can work to age 75 and only for Singaporean. Just started on a 10 days training course I look forward to the day I get a license. It was quite a while since I get to attend class. The problem is if the air-con get too cold I tend to become a ‘sleeping beauty’. Now I worry whether I will pass with flying colors. With nothing to my name I am just happy to be alive and kicking, to drive, to teach chess in school and play badminton.

The course I am taking now seem very heavy and it was meant for us to pass out as professional taxi driver. How many are taxi drivers or aspiring to be one. What are your grievance or joy, share with us.

An incident on the train

get well soon1    get well soon 3all the best for you

(Best wishes for Terence – click on the pictures)

thank you so much  thank you so much 2

(Thanks to all ~ from Terence)

Something happened to me this Tuesday, and I like to share with members who have been looking for me, but I did not reply.

Tuesday, I had raw fish lunch with Kenneth, Robert, SS and Andrew. Raw fish was the best in Chinatown and the company was fun. We had a good chat. After lunch, we left separate ways. I took the NEL train to Hougang, but landed up at Harbourfront. Realised that I was in the wrong direction, I crossed to the other side of the platform to catch the train. I then took a seat. The time was around 2.30pm.

The next moment when I woke up, I found myself inside SGH, at the ICA unit. The time was about 7pm. I was put through numerous blood tests, regular blood pressure monitoring, ECG, urine tests, etc. This unit is the intensive care unit.

What happened was that I had a fit or seizure during the train ride, and remain unconscious until 7pm when I woke up on the hospital bed. I can imagine the commotion caused by train stoppage and ambulance transporting me from train to hospital. I am still in hospital for further monitoring. There is no need to visit me as I am fine now. Thank you for your concern.

To Tian Soo, my apology I couldn’t call you as I had no phone access in the ward.

SHC Freetorecycle

Hi All Members,
Some of the members here had joined the group called SG FreeCycle in Facebook including me.  I had been blessed by others for some items that I need for free and vice versa also.  I hope that this idea can worked out for SHC here also.

I hope that SHC can achieve a same goal to reduce waste by connecting SHC members who are giving goods to others who are seeking the same goods.  This should be entirely a non-profit movement of people who are giving and/or getting stuff for free.  We are looking for goods, eg. computers, furniture, clothing, magazines  – all these said items must be in working and/or useable condition.  These items must be 100% free and not subjected to exchange or sale.

All members are welcomed.  But any forms of advertisements, or posts that are deemed unrelated to this group by moderator, will be removed.

This is how we can make it worked:

  1. Member to post what they want to give away free.  Items that can be included are clothings (must be at least  6/10 condition), working used electrical applicances, costume jewelleries, shoes and many others – either new or hardly used
  2. It can be self collection at the convenient of the givers, paid postage and SAE (self addressed envelope) for those small items – All arrangements made must be agreed by both parties.
  3. Once item is being posted online, there is no such things as FCFS (First come First Served) basis and the giver had the final say as to how the item will be given
  4. However, the receipent, upon receipt of the item, concluded that item received is not required anymore, can re-blessed again within this group to re-cycle this item to bless to other members whom might have the use of this item.

Would appreciate your comments for this….

Screening Movie and e-Entertainment (15-02-2014, Saturday 3-5pm)

The movie, titled, “Alone in the Wilderness”.

This “Alone in the Wilderness” is a 60 minutes movie about one man, Richard Proenneke, who after retirement at the age of 50 in 1967, decided to build a cabin on the shore of Twin Lakes up in the Alaska mountain wilderness. The first summer he scouted for the best cabin site, cut and peeled the logs he would need for his cabin. He returned the next summer to finish the cabin where he lived for over 30 years with nature.  Only when his health was failing him that he returned back to civilisation and lived the remainder of his life with his brother in Hemet, California. He died in April 2003 at the age of 86. He left his cabin and legacy to the National Park Service and it remains a popular visitor attraction in the still remote Twin Lakes region.

You can view with 360° perspective, the surrounding cabin site and interior of the cabin by visiting – www.nps.gov/lacl/historyculture/proennekes-cabin.htm

The Movie …

“Thousands have had such dreams, but Richard Proenneke lived them. He found a place, built a cabin, and stayed to become part of the country. This video “Alone in the Wilderness” is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations and activities he carried out alone, and the constant chain of nature’s events that kept him company.” – Sam Keith

e-Entertainment – it is an IT skill to get yourself “entertained” through surfing the Internet. Though certain sites (especially those marketable movies) require a small rental fee for viewing, but there are also a lot of short videos, also entertaining, out there for FREE viewing. I will also touch on the meaning of “Smart TV” and “Home Intelligence”.

Events Calendar

event calendar1   event calendar2 event calendar3

In the past, we had a Calendar of events.  However, it was cumbersome to use.  Now, all Event Organisers (EOs) and Event Cordinators (ECs) can personally input the Events Calendar, add the date of the events and add the URL link of the Post created.

You can do so, after you have started a new Post. The Events Calendar is just below our web page banner.

Strictly for SHC members use only.

Ageing Gracefully

Hi Fellow SHCians,

The following Post is composed and written by Lau Eng Seng (Leon). I hope the SHC committee and Terence wouldn’t mind if I re-post for Eng Seng as suggested. Excuse me, if it is.

“Hi every one,? I am trying to create a new post to share about aging gracefully but don’t know how. So I post it in this reply. Perhaps some one can re post it in a forum where it can reach all members. Also teach me how to create new post.

7 Important Ways to Age Gracefully?:

1. Accept it, but don’t give in to it.
2. Realise that it’s never too late. As John Barrymore said, “A man is not old until regrets replace dreams.
3. Being moderate and regulated with how we treat our body is one of the smartest steps we can take.
4. Realise what you have and be grateful for it.
5. Laugh often. In George Bernard Shaw’s words, “You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.”
6. Do what you can to look your best, and then forget about it. There’s a lot more to life than how you look.
7. Find meaningful activities. Follow where your passions lie.

I hope each day finds you growing old gracefully, with health, happiness, and fulfilment.
And may all of you live long, live strong, and live happy.

I have seen how this club grown and happy for all new and old members to have now wider scope of activities. Wish I have more time myself to participate.

Will want to get to know more of all of you one day

Leon”
