What ideas and suggestions do you have for SHC?

Time flies and it’s already mid year. Many of you have been SilverHairsClub members for some time, while others are new. For those who are new, I am sure you are wondering what SHC is all about. For those who have been with us for a few years, you probably have some expectations. Now, let’s see if we can refresh and review SilverHairsClub.

SHC’s prime and only objective is to provide a platform for SHCians, over 45, to meet new and more friends. With new and more friends, we take our SilverHairs years into another level.

Over the next one or two months, I like to ask you to open up and share with us what ideas and expectations you have. Is there something you wish SilverHairsClub or its members can do? Is there something you like to do for the club to make it more vibrant and exciting? What other activities do you hope to see, besides dancing, cycling, walking, eating, golfing, board games, bowling, mahjong, travelling, chatting and talking about retirement living?

Share with all of us. Who knows, your idea or suggestions may trigger others to think aloud too. And, please do not trample the ideas or suggestions of fellow members. So, go ahead and actively speak your mind.

Terence Seah

Be an EO, at least once in the term of your membership in SHC

This has always been the concept of SHC.  Event Organisers come from with the membership, and activities are organised with the sole objective of providing a platform for members to meet new ad more friends.  As you have seen in recent years, we have a number of EOs who have contributed their time and effort to organise activities for fellow members.

If each of us make effort to organise one event, and be the EO, we will have enough activities to last the lifetime of the club.  If you had enjoyed some of the activities, please consider organsing one for your friends around. It’s a good return of your heart if you enjoy the activities so far.

Keep strictly out of politics, sex, religion, race, direct selling and MLM.  Do keep out advertising and promotions of external companies and non-members.

New Club Manager – Dolly Lim

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, the 1st May, 2009 marks the appointment of our new club Manager, Ms. Dolly Lim.  My Congratulations to Dolly on her appointment.

I had the privilege to work with her (first-hand)  yesterday at the St. Joseph’s Home where our SHC group (led by EO Geok Suan) were there to entertain the nuns, staff and residents of the Home.

It was an eventful mission and we had a wonderful time working as a team.  It was also the  first  project/duty of our new club manger, Dolly.  I can tell you –  she has leadership quality, dynamic, a ‘live-wire’ ( as Geok Suan said) and most importantly, fantastic PR.

I look forward to working with her in future.

Cheers.

Pat Chan

Do you have a new shop, a new house or a new office?

I have a number of delicate Chinese fingerines, vases, wall hangings, rare stone carvings, etc.  And, I am looking for a place to have them displayed or appreciated in a new house or shop.  They are not for sale, neither are they to be given away.  They are not cheap.  I have bought them from Shanghai, and am looking for a temporary place to hold them and for others to appreciate.

One day, when we can find a place where we use as a lounge or a meeting place for SilverHairs, I shall ask for them to be returned.  Then, we can all appreciate them.

You can start a new Post or thread anytime

I have been asked many times if certain threads or Posts would be approved to appear on this forum.  Here are some guidelines.  As long as the Post does not dwell on discussion topics eg politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM, the Post is considered approved.

If you are organising a new event, and would like to invite other SHC members to join you, please go ahead.  But advertising is strictly not acceptable.  Please do not bring in non-member’s names into this forum.

Comments should come under appropriate threads.  Comments should not be written as new Post.  If  you do, it will likely be deleted.

Go ahead and argue, but please be sensitive and respect the opinion of other SilverHairsClub members.  Please have all the fun in your life.  Everybody is here to make new and more friends.  So, please don’t quarrel among yourselves;  it gives me headaches, and panadols wont help.  There is plenty of space on this website for you to dream and share your life’s vision, so write your "Reflections".  Fair enough?

Another idea on education centre

Hi All SHCians

This is an afterthought from an earlier post by Terence on Education centre as a source of income. Just wish to share my thoughts and welcome your views.

From what I read surfing the net, there appears  to be a need for babysitters for toddlers and even afterschool care. I wonder if so, can childminding or afterschool care as a SHC business activity, with the objective of conducting enrichment activities for the children, work? Do you think, among the SHCians, there are some with the experience and interest in getting together to form a parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts playgroup or education centre or and running activities eg teaching EL/CL through songs, rhymes, computer aided learning, guitar playing, dance and drama etc.

If the group is small, we can use our homes. I will volunteer my flat for this as I’m a grandma with a toddler grandson whom I would like to see in a playgroup. I don’t really see this as a moneymaking business, more perhaps as giving assistance to working mums and dads.

Regards

Joan

In case, you find yourself locked out of the SHC website

The SilverHairsClub.com forum is strictly for registered members.  All registered members will get a welcome email from the administrator.  If you have not received one, it means you are not cleared to be a member.

1.  The easiest way to get registered as a member is to write an email to admin@SilverHairsClub.com.

2.  It is also possible to register on SilverHairsClub.com directly but your first and last name must be given.  If not, you are still not considered registered as a member.

Any member who registers a non-member for an event may be locked out of the website.  A member may also be locked out, if he/she fails to contact the administrator, if requested to do so.  As the club does not take personal details from the member, this procedure helps to verify the membership.

When registering for events, please use the full registered membership name, as we have many Patricks, Verons, Agnes, etc.  Please help to ensure this policy is adhered to.

New roles to lead the SilverHairsClub into 2010

As part of the plan to refresh the SilverHairsClub, we shall have two new roles, to replace the current role I play.

The two roles are: 1. SHC website administrator and 2. SHC Club manager.

Wef 1 March 2009, Loh Yew Kwong will take over the role of SilverHairsClub.com website administrator.  Term end 31 Dec 2010.  New forum participants, passwords, moderation and control of taboos, web banner photos, security, systems features and content will be managed by the website administrator.  Haha, excludes shutting down the website.  The website administration has full rights to delete any content, including contact information, words and phrases considered taboos of the club.  Please note that SilverHairsclub.com is moderated.

Wef 1 May 2009, Dolly Lim will take over the role of SHC Club manager.  Term ends 31 Dec 2010.  The Club manager’s role focuses on all club activities, with special interest on the monthly gatherings.  As usual, SHCians can continue to organise their own activities and invite other SHCians to join in.

Between now to end Dec 2009, we shall be looking for a new Calendar manager, someone to keep track of activities and record them onto the Diary of Events.

Oi Cheng will continue as Pictures Manager, and she manages all photos submitted for publishing on the website.

As for myself, I shall leave the above roles to both Yew Kwong and Dolly Lim.  However, i shall continue to play an interest role in Blue Helmet projects, and be an ordinary SHCian.

Have fun.

Lunar New Year greetings to fellow SHCians

The Lunar New Year festivities and traditions have been celebrated by Chinese for many centuries. It is an important occasion, bringing children, grand-children, parents and grand-parents together.

As has been practised many years in our life time, Chinese New Year brings to us memories of spring cleaning our houses, giving ang-pows to children, exchanging oranges, wearing everything red, getting together the families for the grand re-union dinner, visiting friends and relatives and remembering our loved ones.

Here we share our thoughts and exchange our greetings. Feel free to tell us what you have been doing in your house, whether you make or lose, how much ang pow you have given or collected and what you doing during the Lunar New Year, the year of the hard-working Ox.

And if you are an Ox, come tell us what the new year will mean for you. No limit on the number of words or times you want to share your thoughts. A Happy prosperous New Year to everybody.

From and to every SHCian.

Looking for two SMS system managers

I am looking for two SMS managers to look after the operations of the SMS system.  The job is easy, if I can do it, you can.  Here are the requirements.

Hardware and software:
You don’t need to, but if you know word, excel, this is useful.
You should have a PC, which is ON 24 hours a day.
A phone server with a SIM chip will be provided.  This is for SMS only.  Connection between phone server and PC will be wireless Bluetooth, all will be provided. The SMS software will also be provided.

Some basic IT sense:
You must understand simple rules, eg:
If you do this, then this will happen.
If you don’t do this, then that will happen.
You should know how to import and export files eg .csv files.
You must make effort to read simple manual instructions.
You love designing sms games.

Qualities:
Need to be patient and run your own trials test, until you understand.
Don’t keep calling me, especially when I am travelling.  I will go crazy.

People skills:
You must be familiar with the most of the visible members.
You should be willing to communicate with them via email, especially kakis groups and kakis organisers.
You need to visit the server, at least once a day, to ensure the phone server and the PC are still alive.

Expenses:
All SMS expenses will be absorbed by SilverHairsClub.  You need to be prudent with SMS costs.  No outside work except SilverHairsClub.

Expectations:
You have to maintain 100% confidentiality with all tel numbers and other contact information.  This is extremely important, and breach of this will not be accepted.
This is hard work, but after a few months, the job will be easy.  Unfortunately, as SilverHairsClub is free, your service will be free.

Term:  There will be two SMS managers.  Essentially to backup one another.  The term will be two years.

I envisage the two appointments will start 1st July 2008 2009.  And will start in two stages.

Stage 1: starting and maintaining the kakis groups. Jan – Mar
Stage 2: 3 mths to learn and trial the system. Apr – Jun.

If you think you would like to take this task, plse raise your hand.

A fast way to contact dancers via SMS

Let’s say you have organised a dancing event for this Saturday night.  And you would like to contact other SHCians who love dancing.   So, you write a Post, inviting members to attend.  Then, you complain that this website does not permit telephone numbers to be published.  And, not everybody reads this website every week.  So, some would miss out on the event.

Well, the Event Organiser can now inform "Registered and Interested" dancers via the SHC sms system.  Here’s how I think it can be done.

  1. The Event Organiser must be a familiar face at SHC monthly gatherings; and members know him/her.  Must have been a SHC member for at least 6 months.  Your date of joining is prefixed to your registered name.
  2. The Event Organiser must write a Post on the dance event, on this website.  If needed, the EO can request Admin to send an sms to inform the registered dance group.
  3. All SHCians who love to be informed of any dancing event can register their names with the sms server.  Those who do not register will NOT receive the SMS.  You can de-register anytime.  For more details of the dance event, the member must still check the Post on this website.  How?  I shall inform you this week.

Notes:

  • SHC will not release any telephone numbers of members.  Members will only be informed via SMS; the EO will not know your telephone number.
  • The EO will have to compose and send the SMS message to me, max 120 characters.

This service will also be made available to other sports, hobbies or interest groups, if there is sufficient interest.   Strictly no politics, race, sex, religion, direct selling and MLM.
