“Upgrading” of SHC website.

Hi Administrator, Terence & Web designer,

For the past few weeks I have been talking to SHC members, and quite a number seemed and is still having the same problems as I have. I don’t know whether its my computer { I am using Windows XP } or has it got to do with the web design.

The main page of the SHC website is beautiful, in its larger colourful font and beautifully arranged. I can change the size of the fonts as I wish, as per norm, for this SHC main page and for my Email too.

There the "upgrading" stops.

The moment I click on the ‘Latest Comment’ ……..frustration sets in…….

1. The font size is miniscule…..despite a lot of help by fellow members, am not able to change the size. It is a strain on the eyes to read.

2. Whilst on this page, I am unable to get into the posting to read up and add my comments, should I wish to do so. I practically have to search the whole website for the posting.

3. In addition eg., Yew Kwong’s help in giving the path to transportation details for the next monthly meeting, again this was not accessible by clickin on address. So his offer of help is defeated.

4. The E-mail address of the commentator is now missing.

5. I have hunted high & low for the ‘User’ button to change my password. Have not found it yet.

I hope this is not regarded as nit picking.

But to my mind this ‘upgrading’ is about taking 1 step forward and 5 steps back.

Please advise if there is any way we can have the same ease we had with the previous web site.

For a non savvy computer user, I was able to navigate it with the minimum of problems.

Hope there is help in the horizon.

Thanks for your attention……………Jie

MKZ (Malacca) Trip 04 July 08-06 July 08 for discerning lovers of good food

Malacca Trip 04Jul  – 06 Jul 2008
Staying in 3 bedroom apartments with 2 pax in master bedroom  A with bathroom attached , 2 pax in bedroom B , 2 pax in bedroom C ,1 pax sleeping in 1 bed in living room , 1 pax sleeping on sofa in living room(total 8 pax to one apartment-an alternate is 7 to an apartment at M$82 with nobody sleeping on sofas)…stay is at Century Mahkota Apartments within walking distance to 2 major shopping malls. There are better and cheaper modes of stay like hotels but I chose this style of stay due to the fact we can relax and congregate together in one apartment to socialise and fraternize.  Allotment of sleeping arrangements will be on a drawing of lots basis for PLAN A  where all parties will pay an equal amount of M$76 per person per night(including breakfast).  Alternatively if all parties are agreeable …for PLAN B….Bedrooms B and C will be based on M$76 per person per night( X 2 ) and those in bedroom A can pay M$92 and those sleeping in the living room can pay M$60 if all parties are agreeable. The gross rate for 8 to an apartment is M$605 and for 7 to an apartment is M$573 per apartments .
I  will be act as EO ( gentle Dictator ) in the absence of Ronald Wie who has to fulfill National Day Parade Rehearsal Duties. The proposed tentative budget is S$200 per person  for the whole trip  including  accomodation in Malacca for 2 nights and all meal and drinks during meal times and entrance fee requirements while in Malacca only. All expenses before  you reach Malacca and after you leave Malacca will be at your own expense eg meals and drinks before you reach MKZ and after you leave MKZ.
The agreed methodology of individual car arrangements where drivers get a free ride and all the remainder of pax will contribute to petrol, toll fees and parking. Any other hidden costs like accidents(touch wood everything goes well), damage etc will be borne equally by all participants (you may consider seriously to take up insurance before the trip and can contact me regarding the insurance plans). The pax in the cars must also top up the petrol to full tank basis before exiting Malaysia. This expected expenditure between S$150 to S$200 will be handled and audited by 2-4 senior SHC regarding monitoring of expenses for the whole group. If there is a surplus this balance can augment our dinner in Johore Bahru on the way back( if not enough participants can top up the balance.I would like to declare the my company will benefit on the 10% comm on the hotel portion only. All participants will be provided with a photostat of a state map and another  city map showing the detailed locations of all the places of interest in relation to Malacca roads. This map is exclusive to seasoned travel agencies and not available to the general public.

Stef Lim and  Yew Kong(no car but available as driver. Drivers please handpick your  pax(let me know your choices) but try to keep it on a mixed sex basis per car. It’s up to individual driver if you want  to have 3 pax or 4 pax in the car with you.Drivers please advise what cruising speed you are comfortable  with on the highway and we will try to adjust.SHC please come foward to take care of your fellow drivers so that we can avoid going by bus.For those who can’t get leave and want to stay one night only please declare your intentions and we will try to arrange transport for you .I will check if my cousin’s paejaero is available with his driver thrown in for a fee(can take 6 pax)..
We welcome recommendations for other places not on our list for a consensus and further consideration eg Jasin lucky well with Chinese  Zodiac bathrooms for extra good luckChicken balls have also been recommended to be on the lunch menu but declined at the moment unless there is a surge in requests. For those who are interested in a detailed itinerary please drop me an e-mail at insiders111@yahoo.com.sg

How to look for another SHCian with similar interests?

Look at Shortcuts on the left sidebar.  Click on "Latest Posts".  Instead of "View all categories", choose "Members’ profile".  Or simply do a Search.

How about sharing with us your interests?  You will be surprised that there are many other SHCians who enjoy the same interests and crankiness as you.  If you are still not so sure how, chat with another SHCian.

Vincent Khoo – Profile

Hi, my name is Vinent Khoo, and I was introduced to SilverHairsClub a few years ago.  I live in Thailand for the last 20 years.  My background is in the  industrial spare parts business, and familiar with the industrial estates in Mattaput, Rayong and Bangpakong.

I had retired since 5 years ago.  Today, I live a relaxing life, on what I originally targetted; and that is SGD $500 per month.  My residence is a one room condo on Rachachadapisek Road, Bangkok.   To me, food is easily available at the 3 supermarkets nearly.  Well, as long as one has money, one can get almost all kinds of goods and services.

I shall continue to stay here in Bangkok, as long as I am fit.  Give me a call when you are in Bangkok.  Can bring you around, as long as you cover my food and transport.  My tel/SMS is +6681 555-9950.

What SilverhairsClub means to me.

I was first introduced to SHC by a dear church friend Pheng Sok in March 2007. The first event attended was at the Botanic Garden where the Singapore Chinese Orchestra performed.

I get to meet lot of friend during this visit, like Maria, Lina Tan, Joy and many others. Friend who has been with me till today. To mention them would fill a full page! From then on, it’s the event at Batam, where new friend like Lily, Dolly, Yew Kwong, Tim and Terence I get to meet. I must say that I certainly feel very comfortable with this group of friend. There was lot of fun and laughter. Friend whom I could talk to without putting up a guard.

After this experience of meeting all of them, I begin to look forward to new event to attend. But new events are not forthcoming. I then decide that I should try to organize them and get member to attend. That where I try to organize the Cruise trip to Redang and Kuala Lumpur, bus response was poor. In the course of time I get to meet more new friend like Lina Ng, John Howe, Boon Liang, Eliza, Ah nee, Susan Chan, Susan Chang, Chian Wah and Jessie Teo and Caroline Gee..

Not a person to give up easily, I decide to introduce badminton, dancing and bowling to the club.. These are the activities I enjoy thoroughly and why not get other who are like-minded to join in. More friend I get to meet are, Ronald Wie, Rene, KK Loh, Bira, Peng Peng, Wee Chin, Nor, Marg Tian, Alfred, Alice Seah and Eileen lee.

I must say that I do find satisfaction here in meeting new friend through the various activities, I realized that life can begin at forty-five and there so much to look forward to. There are so many things to share, which would fill pages and pages here. I am sure many other members here felt the same way and I look forward to your sharing with us.

An orgy in the plan, likely Fri 21 June or 4 Jul 2008

About two moons ago, Dan Huang, myself and a few crazy ladies sparked off an idea to have an orgy. I also remembered igniting the same idea with Tim and a small group of SHCians at the Changi Beach club, on the beach. We could have a BBQ too, but not sure yet. I think the night must be a new moon, so that no one can see the other persons. The dress will be swim wear and sleepers. Can have swimming on the beach too. Strictly nothing to do with sex, politics, race, religion, direct selling and MLM. Some hot Elvis, romantic Ann Murray and Donny & Marie songs in the background. We could start at 7pm and end at 10pm. Enough time to go somewhere else. We call it an orgy. Dare to come? Likely it will be a friday night. Give me a feel of your interest. I shall pick up from here then. Do you like to be my assistant, I mean assistant EO? Just stop by the local bar on Sukhumvit Soi 4, and had 5 whiskies, I think. Should be home in Bangkok in the next 30 minutes. Dan, Tim, please dream further. And for others, don’t worry, it’s for fun. Terence Seah

Bean Bag for bodyache , anyone???

I will like to share this little "bean Bag" I use whenever I have my shoulder ache, neck pain and back pain.  I was using it to ease my neck pain last night and I think of sharing it  with the SHCian.

Sew a little pillow case of about 10" x 5" and fill 3/4 full  with wheat (Xiao Mia – look like the bailey – u can get it at any provision shop or NTUC.

Heat the "Bean Bag" in the mirco-wave oven for 1min-1 1/2min. Place it on the "Body ache" . Please place a small towel over it if u have sensitive skin.  It help alot especially on the Knee-Cap pain. It don cure but it release the pain. Some old folk told me that their knee cap is not that painful after long term using it.

I used to sewed this bag for old folk and they are very happy as some are too poor to keep going to the doctor whenever they have this knee-cap problem.

If u have friends and relative who stay in cold country , they can use this as a warmer in the winter.  Please try it out or pass this "Bean Bag Remedy" to friends. It is cheap and reliable as well.

If u keep this bean bag dry ,u can use it for many years. Good Luck

SHC Monthly Meeting

Hans is an OK place to have our monthly meetings but I yearn for a place with notebook computer access. For lack of a better place I am recommending our members to do an online petition to persuade our founder to use Scorebot for our next meeting as it has internet facilities. While it’s seating capacity is limited it has enough standing capacity to create an informal  and cosy atmosphere.  Our founder is reluctant to do so because of conflict of interest but if members can persuade him in this thread I am sure he may reconsider! Our founder feels "pai sei" or awkward as he has a vested interest in the prosperity of the outlet but as long as we get a fair and good deal I strongly feel its a win -win situation for all parties. If unconvinced I would suggest we use it as a base and hangout for members until we are able to find other suitable places with internet access and than we can rotate and come back to Scorebot on alternate months or use it in lieu of unavailability of suitable locations."What say you fellow SHC members?"…support a good cause!

In the meantime any suggestions for other suitable locations with internet access? Is anybody a member of any country club who can negotiate use of one of their outlets or unutilised ballroom for one of their slow nights since it is a weekday usually.

Andrew Lee – Profile

Hello Everyone,

My name is Andrew and I will be 50 by the end of the year. I am a Hougang Nan , residing near the Kovan MRT with my wife and 19 yr old daughter . I am still working fulltime in a Japanese(MNC) Regional office .

Two weeks ago I stumbled onto this site and was impressed alot to sign up as a member. I love music and are interested in anything related to the 1950s era. Love a Elvis number anytime….

Travelling is another interest and we try to put in a holiday at least once a year, spending some quality time to ourselves….away from the office and school.

I am not a physical activity kind of guy and the only exercise I try to do is occasionally put in abit of walking in the evening at Ponggol Park. I used to do it 3-4 times a week, but lately been abit lazy and put them off with some silly excuses.

Anyway, I am looking forward to participating in some of the SHC activities. Cheers !!

Chicken Bryani The Easy Way

I was reading one of Steven Chan Posting on "The Joy of Eating & Cooking" and wanted to share this Simple & Easy way of cooking Nasi Bryani/Chicken Bryani .

I am a very lousy cook by nature and do not enjoy cooking at all but this "dish" is very easy to cook and is very "Yummy"

Pauline Khoo & Sally Kang had been my guests for this dish and enjoyed it very much. I used to cook for my church gathering as well.

I will type the receipt in the comments column.

Survey on volunteer drivers for Malacca trip

Mr. Ronald Wie with myself as co-chair would like to make this survey on the principle that 3pax in the car will pay for all expenses related to toll, fuel and parking charges for the driver who will get a free ride in lieu of free loan of his car for the trip. His fuel tank will  be topped up in full before the return to Singapore. In addition touch wood …should an accident or any damage to car is incurred that is not covered by insurance will be borne by all occupants of the car including the driver.

Lady drivers are welcome especially by useless me(as I don’t drive) but I figure that I make a good navigator especially on bumpy roads.Ha Ha Ha!What do the drivers and pax  themselves think of 4 pax and 1 driver in the bigger cars…is it too uncomfortable?.Drivers have final say on who they want in their respective cars with a proviso that there must be a  healthy mix of both sexes unless there is an imbalance in numbers.

On this trip (date and itinerary to be decided later ) by the 2 BA-BA black sheep with MKZ(Malacca) origins or ancestry will ensure visits to the best in hawker fare for specialities like oyster omelette and the best gula melaka and belachan shop.,the best chendol stall(provided clean and not at roadside),where to find good MKZ coffee.hawker fare at Jonkers street.Good Pernakan restuarants with standards like Oleh Sayang will be vetted to narrow down to the best at reasonable prices.Special advice will be given by my cousin who is still a resident in MKZ.

Ronald and myself will sort out the places of interest to visit with input from my cousin as well. Will 2 nights be sufficient? Please let us know your thoughts If there is not enough to form a convoy of cars bus alternative will be considered…although at a glance does not seem suitable for MKZ.

Best regards,

Patrick Khoo

Visit to an oil palm mill in Johore – Sat, Jun 14, 2008

Hi to all members,

Eleanor and I are trying to arrange a visit to an oil palm mill and the details are:

Date: Jun 14th, 2008, a Saturday.   Time: Meet at a pre-arranged place at 7.30am

Duration: 8-10 hrs.  Estimated time back in Sgp: About 10pm, depending on the customs and immigration jam.

Costs: to be advised. This will cover the cost of renting a bus. All meals will be shared

All members who ae interested please register in this thread.

As an alternative, we are also considering using our cars instead of renting a bus if the numbers are small. Those members who are willing to drive please indicate here. The usual mode of payment for the owner/drivers for their fuel will be made. If we have 10 to 12 interested members, we can drive up in 2 or 3 cars, avoiding the hassle of arranging for a bus.

Can someone here also please tell me the usual practice of how the costs are shared in your earlier trips. Please use this thread for all your questions and Eleanor and I will try to answer them.

Let’s have a show of hands to see how many are interested.

Cheers to all,

Eleanor and Charles

Review of Manchester Utd vs Chelsea Euro Champs Final

For the sake of SHC members who bet regularly on Toto,4D,the casinos and mahjong I strongly urge

members to put a bet in.I have a track record as a horse racing pundit on the horse racing website at

www.7naps.com with a 40% strike rate.At my peak for this season I did achieve a win strike rate of 45%.My insiders111 publication was  featured on Mediacorp’s programme called Tracktalk with 6 winners in a day of 10 races and 10 winners over 2 days of 20 races. My track record as a soccer pundit is getting the result of the last 4 World Cup matches played when Italy beat France in the finals.betting in these 2 fields is akin to advise being given by a good stockbroker who advises you on shares on the stock exchange. You need good research and a superior method of analysis to make $$$.

So here goes,(if I am wrong Tim Liu would probably be the 1st to throw egg on my face  followed by Terence)Terence seldom bet but was persuaded to do so by yours truly at last night’s Bachelor Nite

which was warmly gatecrashed by 3 charming ladies(warmly received). There goes the gossip grapevine working overtime!(I hope the 3 ladies don’t throw shoes at me when we meet the next time).Moderator if this is too scandalous please censor.

Here goes Take a draw on 1 X 2… 90 min result… logical reasoning market opened at $2.85

now drifted to $2.70…very confident…put a big bet on this…my bet is $100(very puny by Tim’s standards in comparison)

medium confidence token bet for better value(greedy for bigger odds…may be my undoing).

Take a token bet $5 or $10 on half-time/full-time on D-D ie DRAW-DRAW(from $4.40 drifted to $3.70)

plus another token bet on zero goals at $5 only(average is $9.00 for usual games but this is the lowest odds for this bet to the best of my memory…market opened at $6.50 drifted to $5.50

low level of confidence speculative bets at good odds …this bet must be taken in tandem…under special bets…Chelsea to win after 90 mins at $8.25 and Chelsea to win on penalties at $9.00.I am not confident of this position and for those die hard Man Utd fans I recommend this bet(2bets in tandemat $

as a better bet than For Man Utd to win on the 1 X 2 at $2.30

Art Auction

Too good to miss !!!

There’s a great free event today Sun 18 May 2008 with buffet. It’s the Burobudur  art auction at Suntec Level 2, Ballroom 2. It is run like Sotheby or Christy. There are many high networth individuals, many of whom are rich Indonesians and their brokers. You have paintings running up to $200K, collectors watches and pens. Best of all they have a free art brochure with colured pictures of every lot.

Sign up as a member. The food is served only at the end, probably 6pm. You can estimate it by the running number. Give 2 mins for each lot. Register early, do your shopping and come back for the food.

Big thanks to SHC members

Thinking aloud the future of SilverHairsClub

One year ago, a member confronted me, and asked what would happened to SilverHairsClub should something happened to me.  I felt offended at first, but Yeah hah, sounds like a very serious question.  Since then, I have been thinking.  I like to share my thoughts aloud.

  1. For the time being, I have put the different passwords of this website on a piece of paper.  Should anything happen to me, this piece of paper will be handed to someone whom I have designated.  The person is a SHC member.  I am surprised that SilverHairsClub.com has turned out to be very well read, with 75% readership in Singapore.  So, we should plan for it to run forever.
  2. I am also thinking of creating a corporate entity "SHC Corporate" which will own SilverHairsClub.com.  Discussions of SHC Corporate are on another thread.  SilverHairsClub will run as it is currently run, with no membership fee, the same taboos, age requirement and style.  With the corporate entity, hopefully, we dont have to debate the issue of succession, plus other issues of activities organised by the club.  We are still discussing, so it would be nice to hear from you.

Enough for now.  I look forward to hear from you.

Terence Seah
