Embracing a Digital Lifestyle

I am starting a WhatsApp chat group to allow those interested to share their IT (computer) discoveries with those in the group.
For those interested, we can arrange meetups in foodcourt, cafe, library or even in a volunteer’s home. You can also provide feedback to me as to what computer topic or smart devices (iPhone, smartphone, iPad, tablet) you would like to learn more or have trouble with. I can then consider to include in my monthly free IT (computer) talks in the library or other venues.Currently I am providing an IT (computer) talks on the second Saturday of the month in Bukit Merah Library. Please visit my blog for details.

I am also, if time permits, considering doing another two hours IT (computer) Talk on a rotational monthly basis in various library branches. To keep up with active ageing, I do also organize high tea, photo walks, sculptures hunting and other anniversary type of events like the once a year Christmas Walk.

For those interested, please provide me with your full name and mobile number through email, hewlee@gmail.com. Please do not provide your telephone number in the comments of this post.

Monthly Walk – Nature in the Garden : A Green Treasure

Date: Saturday, 4 July 2015

Meeting Place: Boon Lay Mrt Station, Exit D facing Jurong Point

Start Time: 4.00pm Sharp, taking bus to walk site

Duration:  about 2 hours.

ECs for this walk:  Veronica Wong & Mary Tan

A nice place to explore.    Climbing 58 steps to the summit lookout for a bird’s eye view of the garden.   An amazing variety of wildlife and nature and is home to so many birds, dragonflies, butterflies and insects.   Go through the freshwater swamp, streams and ponds in the garden.  Try to spot butterflies and dragonflies flying around at the Butterfly Garden.

Venture into the walking trail which is just a path between bushes and trees   The trail is a fairly easy route on an all-flat terrain except at the end where there’s quite a steep slope to go down and it is quite hard to gain a foothold on small slippery pebbles.   This trail will only be available till 2019 so come visit before it disappears.   Do wear comfortable covered walking shoes.

At the end of the walk, those who wish to have dinner can proceed to Jurong Point mall where there’s the Kopitiam and other food outlets.

Introducing a weekend of adventure at Khao Yai National Park, 10-12 Oct 2015

khaoyai nat parkmap      khao-yai-national-park

Some of you have joined me at Khao Yai National Park. This will be the first event dedicated to SilverHairsClub members and children, aged 26 and above. We intend to hold this exciting event in Oct, from a Friday to a Sunday.

Khao Yai is located some 1.5-2 hours north-east of the old Donmuang airport. It is ideally suitable for young adults, beautiful waterfalls in October, a good place to look out in its natural habitats for wild elephants, deers, junglefowls, Asian bears, and bird watching.

I plan to stay in tents, which we can buy on our own or rent from the National Park. We will arrange a cook to handle our dinners and breakfast. Ideally suited for members and their adult children.

For ourselves, there are grape plantations, where we can enjoy fresh grapes, juices, red and white wines. Also a good local beef steak.

There is adventure land, with horse riding, ATVS, rides. Our adult kids will enjoy time together, and they will find btheir own time to mingle with one another and get to know one another better. Car racing, and other trills which we used to enjoy when we were young. Bring your sons and daughters along. You have to make the effort.

Quietly located, Khao Yai air is fresh, the morning is cool and a good time to spend with family. Important our children can mix with other children.

Golf. Loves, we can play as the famous “Forest hill” golf course, where many tee offs start from a height. It’s easy.

I intend to make it easy, as we will have helpers to make our trip fun, enjoyable and meaningful.

This trip is for you and your adult children. Our plan is to arrive at the airport, and head straight for Khao Yai, 2 hours away.

Confirmed date:  Meet at DonMuang airport at 10am morning and 10am at Survanabhumi airport (if a group is formed) on Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm.  Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

More details will come up. Express your interest here.

Meeting Point: Kranji MRT, entrance to “KopiTiam”.

We are back for an exciting adventure… Get up close to wildlife!

I have waited for several years for a better access to our largest
mangrove forest, 130 hectares (about 130 football fields) in
addition another 31-hectares of rich mangrove and coastal forests.

Hopefully, you will chance upon a baby frog hopping along the paths
(I missed to capture a shot) or a monitor lizard basking in the sun!
Do have your camera ready to take the unexpected encounters. hehe

Please bring along a snack or fruit for the extra “energy boost”!

This walk might end past norm dinner hour… we shall play by ear.

Important:
Wear comfortable walking/covered shoes, if possible bring
a small torchlight, drinking water, insect repellent, hat/cap.

If you encounter wildlife, back away slowly/quietly!

Regular SHC retreat to Desaru for members to get to know new and more friends

lotus desaru    lotus desaru1  lotus desaru2  lotus desaru3  SilverHairsClub will be 10 years  in Oct 2015.  During all this while, we had observed our objective; and that is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends.  This has worked very well, and many members have found their own circle of new friends.

Last few months, I have been reviewing our objective and plans for 2015.  The idea of providing a platform for members to meet, and then letting them find other SilverHairs with similar interests, hobbies and thinking has worked well.  So, I intend to stick to this route.  Yes, many succeeded; but many have not succeeded.  We have not been able to individually pair or group member interests yet.  It is kind of difficult to read members’ minds.

This year, in 2015, we are working on expanding members’ gatherings to outside Singapore.  Same idea on providing the same platform.Stay flexible, to gather to various size groups, eg from 20 to 200 pax, if the venue is flexible.  Stay close to Singapore, and desaru has been identified; thanks to the thinkers and support from fellow members.

It is important to keep cost low, to encourage retirees and semi-retirees to participate. We have many rich and fairly rich members in the club, as well as those who are still working, and able to afford 4-5 star outdoor activities.  But, for many members, maintaining a group of friends during our SilverHairs years is important.

Lotus Desaru Hotel has been identified to provide retreats for members.  A new idea is now to offer opportunities for members and other Singaporean/PR to participate in this retreat.  This opens the possibility of a wider membership, and expanding what we currently offer to members to Singapore as a whole.  I do not have all the ideas and plans, but you can help to add ideas by giving your feedback.  If you wish to be part of this direction, have your say.

Current info suggests that there are a few ways to get to Desaru ie public bus to desaru, a ferry ride from Changi and then a short land ride to Desaru.  Driving is a common option but this requires organising. and finally a coach ride from woodlands MRT to Desaru.

Inndications suggest the price will be about SGD 100, to cover shared hotel room, breakfast, uncomplicated lunch and dinner, transport from JB to Desaru.  Not sure what it cost for the ferry; and the timing.

We can invite activities from our own members, and new corporate members.  May a good 2D1N to get to know one another and new ones too.

Monthly walk: 11October – Fort Canning Park

Posted on behalf of Alice.

Date : Saturday, 11 October 2014
Time : 4.00 pm
Nearest MRT : Dhoby Ghaut station
Meeting Place: Park Mall, main entrance
Duration: 2 hrs
ECs : Alice Seah and Judy Lim

This month we will be walking in Fort Canning Park. Before November 1981
it was named Fort Canning Hill or “Forbidden Hill” in Malay. Since the
14th century many Singapore rulers and colonial masters have lived here,
including Sir Stamford Raffles. It was an important military base during
World War II.

Fort Canning Park is undulating and about 60 metres high. Remnants and
relics of bygone eras are around. There’s a Spice Garden, previously
Singapore’s first experimental and botanic garden. The tranquil ambience
together with diverse flora and fauna makes the walk interesting. You will
appreciate the beautiful sculptures completed by various artists.
Many cultural and recreational activities are held here.

Note: Bring water, caps, umbrella and wear comfortable walking shoes.

MacRitchie Loop……. round the entire reservoir! including the TreeTop
Walk…. hooray!

MacRitchie Reservoir needs no introduction.

Briefly:
It was opened in 1967 and through the years, trails were launched,
boardwalks were built.  Several trails are named after tree species
commonly found along the trails eg., Prunus, Petai, Chemperai,
Jering and Petaling.

It is still a popular recreational area, esp in the mornings
during weekends or public holidays, many different groups of walkers,
hikers, families young and old are found along the various trails.

TreeTop Walk** – a 250m long freestanding suspension bridge between
the 2 highest points in this Central Catchment Nature Reserve
(MacRitchie), still the 1st of its kind in Singapore.

Be delighted with panoramic views, green green grass, giant trees,
close encounters with thousand species of flowering plants,
keep your eyes opened in case you chance upon native creatures,
insects, birds…..white-bellied Fish Eagles soaring above.

**TreeTop Walk:  those who decides not to go across this, our
Ms AliceS will lead you through another route.

Please bring along a snack or fruit for the extra “energy boost”!

This walk will end past norm lunch hour ie., we will have a late lunch.
Therefore, will help to reserve lunch for you at the Cafeteria.
There are varieties but servings are limited.

If you want lunch:
please place order(indicate Item No.), make payment upon registration.
It seems silly to collect such a small amount, however, Cafeteria requires a
deposit due to bad experiences, if it is a no show of 1 or 2 pax/orders, I can
pay for it but if more, will not be possible as I will not be needing additional
ordered lunch at all.

To simplify, only 3 choices:
1)  Laksa  (yummy good!)    … 4.50
2)  Mushroom Chicken Noodle … 4.50
3)  Chicken Chop Rice         … 5.50
