SHC monthly gathering – Sun, 15 Mar 2009 (Update)

The March monthly gathering is now set, really really set in stone. Earlier, we had some difficulties accommodating our group at Tessensohn; but we have since cancelled it. The new details are as follows:

  • Venue: Hans Cafe at Upper Pickering Street, Great Eastern Building.
  • Date: Sun 15 Mar 2009.
  • Time: 1500 – 1900 hrs.
  • Entrance: Free. F&B available at the counter.
  • Dress code: As you would wear to wear on a Sunday, from underwear to winter wear.
  • Agenda: Getting to know new and old members. You may also play board games, a continuation of the last monthly gathering in Feb.
  • Event Organiser: Terence Seah

New and senior members are encouraged to come, if you are free. Some members have repeated failed to register on this forum; and instead just turn up. Do not bring friends please. Let’s see how fast we can gather a monthly gathering at such short notice.

Dinner on 25 April 2009 at the H.K. Best Soup Restaurant

Dear SHC Friends,

Do you believe in drinking soup as a culture for life longevity ? Well, the HongKongers and Southern Chinese in China have done it.  As Chinese and especially the Cantonese, we were told by our mom, grandma, or even great grandma that drinking soup regularly is good for our body.

Basically, tonic soup is very nourishing to the soul, it improves blood circulations, boost energy and also increase one immunity level. It is also proven to be good for the overall well being.

Last weekend, about twenty of us (SHCians) attended a brief talk on the secret cum preparation of chinese herbal tonic soup  at “H.K. BEST SOUP” Restaurant. The owner/chef (???) is from Hong Kong, a highly respectable cook and is specialized in double-boiled soup. He is also a famous column writer on soup preparation/cooking in our local Chinese newspaper, ????.

For those who are curious and also to experience what Chef ? have in store for us, we are organizing a Hong Kong (Cantonese) cuisine dinner in April. This special value for money menu which Chef ? quoted for us, should not be missed !  For $220.00 per table, we are having “Pen Cai” (??) as our main course and also a special double-boiled wild yam or "Huai Shan" (??) soup. SHC 1st Golf Open – 23rd Feb at SCC

We finally drove 2009 past one major milestone in SHC history, the first Golf Tournament Open Invitation,
thanks to Janet Loo and Lin Chuah helping me to stir enough interest and also sponsoring the prizes.

The tournament was held at Sembawang Country Club on the 23rd Feb Monday afternoon.
Almost
90% of the known registered golfers in SHC turn up for this event and
though it rained and delayed play for one hour, we managed to complete
the game.

The day started off with the following flights:

Another idea on education centre

Hi All SHCians

This is an afterthought from an earlier post by Terence on Education centre as a source of income. Just wish to share my thoughts and welcome your views.

From what I read surfing the net, there appears  to be a need for babysitters for toddlers and even afterschool care. I wonder if so, can childminding or afterschool care as a SHC business activity, with the objective of conducting enrichment activities for the children, work? Do you think, among the SHCians, there are some with the experience and interest in getting together to form a parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts playgroup or education centre or and running activities eg teaching EL/CL through songs, rhymes,computer aided learning, guitar playing, dance and drama etc.

If the group is small, we can use our homes. I will volunteer my flat for this as I’m a grandma with a toddler grandson whom I would like to see in a playgroup. I don’t really see this as a moneymaking business, more perhaps as giving assistance to working mums and dads.

Dear SHCians!We have come to our last PipeLine Ramble!  We have scaled up walls, cross fences, jumped across ‘canals’…… PLR4 might be the toughest of all because of certain challenges, yet to take on!This trail leads us through green pastures; give your legs a good workout as you climb from 1 slope to the next… each steeper than the 1 before.  At last, on top of a slope, standing on a small space enough for 2; to take a breather ….. turned, look back,,,,,,  a ‘gasp’; Wow! so steep!!   Reality dawns; a smile broke forth with glee……. I DID IT!!!?     emoticon

In PLR2 we walked on a pipeline, a small ‘section’.  Someone had asked: Can we walk the entire length?   Such a chance is HERE!

Challenge:  walk ON the entire length of a huge pipe!  No turning back as it is the only way to the opposite side. 
This pipe seems broader; definitely longer, approx 200m.

Next,   ever stepped on something soft?   I mean, really soft…..aargggghhh, a rare experience! 

This trail might be Challenging for some;  to others, definitely a Challenge not to be missed!!!!!  ADVENTURE!….Excitement!…. awaits!        emoticon

Start Time:  4pm SHARP.  (Route 8 – 9km.  Be punctual, due to the challenges, might take 3hrs).

Meeting Point:   Blk 259 coffeeshop, along Bt Panjang Road (same place where PLR3 ended).

How to Get there:  
(i)  Choa Chu Kang MRT transfer to Bt Panjang LRT – Bangkit station.
Exit LRT,  keep left – see Blk 255 /Bt Panjang Ring Rd, walk forward, look for
Blk 259.
(note:  from Choa Chu Kang MRT to Bangkit LRT – allow 15-20mins, waiting
& travel time).

OR
(ii)  Buses along Bukit Panjang Road alight at either Blk 223 or Blk 270
(depends which direction you are coming from)  –  bus nos. 171, 187, 190,
700A, 960, 963, 966.

Walk will End:  at Woodlands Town Garden @Woodlands Centre Road / Woodlands Centre Point.Take 950 or 911 to Marsiling MRT.  Other bus services available: 178; 856; 903; 911; 912; 913; 170.

NOTE:
1)  DO wear proper walking, covered shoes; use an old pair; ‘non-slip’.
2)  If mozzies are attracted to you, bring insect sprays.3)  There are no ‘toilet’ facilities & no shelter from raindrops.4)  Bring only the minimum, ‘light’ on the back is ideal!

An Exception:  due to the terrain of this trail, should the weather be inclement either on Friday night or Saturday morning, for the safety of all participants, the walk might be cancelled.   emoticon    (ps: Trail heads Northwards).

Background of this Trial:
What is this PipeLine Ramble – PLR? Most of you would know that a water
pipeline runs from Johor to Singapore but have anybody thought to trace the pipeline route"?

The entire trail is approx 30km! We had intended to introduce this trail in 3 separate segments but had decided to segment it into 4 parts.
Each part of the route has a different terrain and each opens up a part of
Singapore seldom seen.

PLR1: in Apr08 the 1st segment, from Pearl’s Hill to Farrer Road.
PLR2:  Aug08 Farrer Road to Turf City (the pixs are found in the same post
dd 23July08).
PLR3: Oct08 Turf City to Bukit Panjang Park (post dd 01Oct08, pixs are found
in the same post).

b. Sabbatical leave: Executives booked for New York will now go to Kukup in Johor Bahru instead. Senior executives can go further – up to Yong Peng.

c. Our chalet lease in Pulau Ubin has ended. However, as the management takes a keen interest in staff welfare, we have arranged with Francis (from Admin Dept) to rent out one of his rooms at Blk 923, Pasir Ris Drive. His flat was chosen for its proximity to the sea and you can still see Ubin from the window.

d. Entertainment claims: Staff will be required to go for a 30-min demonstration by Raj from Finance Dept, who will show you how to withdraw your credit card slowly from your wallet (58 secs), so that others at a business lunch will inadvertently beat you to it when the bill comes.

e. The Valentine’s Day white chocolates (Deluxeur) which I gave out in January : Those of you who have yet to open the box, please return them expiry date: Dec 2009).

f. Monthly Best Employee Award : The $1000 cash award will now be replaced by a box of Deluxeur white chocolates.

g. Annual Best Employee Award : The 14-day Disneyland/Hawaii tour and solid gold Rolex Oyster watch will be replaced by TWO boxes of Deluxeur white chocolates.

h. Medical: The Oxfordshire-Hopkins Medical Group will no more be on our panel. Annabelle will give you the address of Hong Tong Hong Medical Hall in Sungei Road. Bring you company pass for a 10% discount.

i. Country Club Memberships : Senior executives must return their membership cards to Annabelle, who will then register your name with Bishan Community Centre.

j.. Transport Allowance : No reduction of rate! However, it will be paid on alternate months.

k. Gifts for clients : New choices. The Bohemian Crystal list will be replaced by the one from 7-eleven.

VALENTINE DAY ORIGIN

Here’s something for some debate if anyone really knows how, when and where Valentine Day originated !!

If You Observe Valentine’s Day, You Are Observing An Ancient Indian Practice

In spite of what you have been told by everyone, the truth is that Valentine’s Day originated hundreds of years ago in India, and to top it all, in the state of Gujarat !!!

It is a well known fact that Gujarati men, specially the Patels, continually mistreated and disrespected their wives (Patelianis). One fine day, which happened to be the 14th day of February, one brave Patelani, having had enough "torture" by her husband, finally chose to rebel by beating him up with a Velan (rolling pin to make chapattis).

Yes….the same Velan which she used daily, to make chapattis for him…. only this time, instead of the dough, it was the husband who was flattened.

This was a momentous occasion for all Gujarati women and the revolt soon spread, like wild fire, with thousands of housewives beating up their husbands with the Velan. There was an outburst of moaning "chapatti-ed" husbands all over Anand and Amdavad.

The Patel men-folk quickly learnt their lesson and started to behave more respectfully with their Patelanis.

Thereafter, on 14th February every year, the womenfolk of Gujaratwould beat up their husbands to commemorate that eventful day – the wives having the satisfaction of beating up their husbands with the Velan and the men having the supreme joy of submitting to the will of the women they loved.

Soon the Gujju men realized that in order to avoid this ordeal they need to present gifts to their wives….they brought flowers and sweets. This is how the tradition – Velan time – began.

Greetings from Sydney. We have just returned from a short "balek kampong" trip to Singapore and we were amazed to find such a great varities of fusion food between eastern and western food available to us. We did enjoy these new food versions but what we missed were simple traditional foods that filled us with memories of the tradition kitchens, with its preparations for special feast days and the ritual of everyday family meals.

We are awared that food preparations and cooking stlyes have evolved with the hectic lifestyle and needs of the younger generation. But unless we the silverHairs passed it to them (on the presumption that they wanted to learn) these traditional food and cooking secrets will be lost and slipped beyond the realm of recall.

My wife is currently compiling a collection of simple home cookings and recipes that are normally handled down from parents to children through the generations by word of mouth. We are writing this post to ask for your help and share with us your family cooking secrets so that we can preserve the true flavour of the original food for the young ones to keep.

That’s when she shot him…

On their wedding night, the young bride approached her new husband and asked for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state, her husband readily agreed.

This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 30 years, with him thinking that it was a cute way for her to afford new clothes and other incidentals that she needed.

Arriving home around noon one day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state. During the next few minutes, he explained that his employer was going through a process of corporate downsizing and he had been let go. Patrick Chan – Profile

Hello Everyone,

Just a brief profile to introduce myself, having joined some months ago.

The Stars-in-Concert was my first attendance which I  thoroughly enjoyed and got to meet some nice people too.  I was warmly welcomed by Ms Susan Chan (at the door) and other members like Ms Lily Ho including Mr Terence Seah, the man who started it all.

I find the SHC a great platform for fellowship, free to choose activities and most interestingly a very vibrant forum posting community.  E.g. I enjoy reading the hilarious lines and wisecracks of Mr Tim Liu who got me into stitches at times.

Like some of you, I am a ‘baby boomer’ (those born between l947 – l957) now retired from active business after having been involved in the Retail, F & B , Entertainment & Logistic industries for sometime.

My current social interests involved supporting the grass root activities of community clubs, charity shows, concert hosting, stage managing and emceeing (MC) of events.

Also, just for the kicks and to entertain myself (and friends) I formed a 5-piece Pop band where I’d sing and play the electric guitar.  Playing with the guitar was my first love affair – at age 14.  Now, me and my band ( Pat & Patricians) would ‘rock it up’ once a week in our own Music studio at a community club.  

We play a genre of songs and guitar instrumental hits ‘down memory lane’ of the 60s, 70s & 80s. 

I  love to play hits from the likes of The Beatles, CCR, Bee Gees, Rollin Stones, Deep Purple, Scorpion, Eagles, Bread, Doobie Brothers, Simon & Gar, Eric Clapton, John Denver, Rod Stewart, shakin Steven, Boney M, Carpenters,  Cliff Richard & Shadows, Jumping Jewels and of course the King of Rock n Roll – Elvis Presley & more ! 

At times, I get invited to play and sing at entertainment pubs, charity shows, members club, cc, concerts  and other social events. 

Its a wonderful and splendid feeling if you sing from your heart or hear songs that you once so cherished.  Its like ‘yesterday’ once more.  Personally, I find it very therapeutic. 

So,  if any fellow members who’d like to sing, play the guitar (keyboard/drum), dance (rock n roll, disco rock, chacha, rhumba, waltz, country line etc) or just want to relax and ‘gelek gelek’ –  you ‘re most welcome to join me in my ‘musical jam’ down memory lane. 

Meawhile, here’s wishing all SHC folks a Rollin Good Time ahead.

New roles to lead the SilverHairsClub into 2010

As part of the plan to refresh the SilverHairsClub, we shall have two new roles, to replace the current role I play.

The two roles are: 1. SHC website administrator and 2. SHC Club manager.

Wef 1 March 2009, Loh Yew Kwong will take over the role of SilverHairsClub.com website administrator.  Term end 31 Dec 2010.  New forum participants, passwords, moderation and control of taboos, web banner photos, security, systems features and content will be managed by the website administrator.  Haha, excludes shutting down the website.  The website administration has full rights to delete any content, including contact information, words and phrases considered taboos of the club.  Please note that SilverHairsclub.com is moderated.

Wef 1 May 2009, Dolly Lim will take over the role of SHC Club manager.  Term ends 31 Dec 2010.  The Club manager’s role focuses on all club activities, with special interest on the monthly gatherings.  As usual, SHCians can continue to organise their own activities and invite other SHCians to join in.

Between now to end Dec 2009, we shall be looking for a new Calendar manager, someone to keep track of activities and record them onto the Diary of Events.

Oi Cheng will continue as Pictures Manager, and she manages all photos submitted for publishing on the website.

As for myself, I shall leave the above roles to both Yew Kwong and Dolly Lim.  However, i shall continue to play an interest role in Blue Helmet projects, and be an ordinary SHCian.

Monthly Cycling – Sat 21 Feb 09

Sat, 21 Feb 09 from 4 p.m. at East Coast Park

Meet at rear of McDonald Restaurant Marina Cove (former East Coast Recreation Park). Rented bicycles are abundantly available at reasonable rates.

Activity will not be cancelled even if it rains but will be brought indoor 2 turn into chitchat session.

We will go for dinner together after the session at the nearby hawker centre. Pls come n join us.

Rain or shine, we will definitely be there 4 U. Look forward 2 seeing u guys.

Our Usual Program –

  • 4.00 – 4.30 p.m. : Gather 4 chitchating, if possible inside aircon McDonald Rest.
  • 4.30 p.m.            : Proceed 2 bike rental kiosk, Coastal Recreation, 2 rent bikes. Rental Cost is between $5-$6 unless fuel surcharge is imposed, the cost may be bit higher.
  • 4.30 – 6.30 p.m. : Cycling around East Coat Park.
  • Douglas leads passion riders up to Changi Village (start off at 3 pm n distance abt 30km) – to be confirmed 
  • Lily leads standard distance cyclists around ECP (distance abt 6 to 8km).
  • Jade coach learners otherwise will follow the slow cyclists (distance will depend…).
  • 6.30 – 7.00 p.m. : All cyclists ride back 2 start point 2 return bikes n go 4 dinner.

Trading Fund

 Hi Silverhairs

 In essence, this SHC Trading Fund will be set up in accordance with the following criteria:

 1.  Capital          –  made up of multiples of shares @ $100 each with a MINIMUM Twenty shares,

                               $2,000, and up to a MAXIMUM of One Hundred shares, $10,000

 2.  Shareholders  –  a SHCian can subscribe up to a maximum of THREE shares

 3.  Trading Account  –  Only one trading-account in the name of Silverhairsclub Trading Fund and

                                       this Account will be the depository of the Fund’s capital and trading

                                       profits

 4.  Dividends        –  will be cash distribution monthly or fortnightly

 5. Executor          –  a selected Committee member of the Fund will rotationally (monthly timeframe)

                                 execute "buy" & "sell" orders and subsequently inform, soonest as possible

                                 other participating members

  Interested members can form a sub-group meeting on 25th February during SHC monthly meet

at same venue.

Education services as a source of income

For some time already, some SHCians have dwelled on the topic of providing education or tuition services, as a source of income, when one go into retirement.  Of course, today, it is not necessary to be retire to provide tuition service services.

Recent ideas include education for children, conversation English for foreign students, proficiency lessons, a tuition club, etc.  Let’s use this Post to discuss.  There is no right or wrong ideas, practical or fluid ideas.  Please respect each others opinion.  Write it here; and other like-mind will join in.

The objective is at the end of this, a number of SHCians can get together, and make the business of education viable.  We will use the information and discussion here to determine interests and viability.

14th February….. Let’s think about love and friendship.  A Japanese once told me that in Japan it is also referrred to as Tomo-choko (???)  
Tomo meaining friend; choko meaning chocolate.  Got the ‘hint’? …make this a Memorable Valentine’s Day!       emoticon

You are invited to a KOOL date….. to explore our Singapore’s latest downtown icon; the 1st reservoir in the heart of the city! 
the magnificient MARINA BARRAGE!  

This unique 3-in-1 provides:
1)  Water supply — will increase our local water supply source,
2)  Flood control — being a dam built across the Marina Channel to keep out seawater and 
3)  New Lifestyle attraction — ideal for all kinds of recreational activities; set to become an integrated watersports hub and
premier tourist attraction.

A WALK THAT IS DIFFERENT !  An opportunity to        emoticon
(i)  "Walk on Water" by crossing the dam across the Marina Channel.
(ii) "Stand on a Green Roof"  to view our city skyline with the sea as your backdrop; definitely, a view with a great difference!
(iii) "Stroll in the park"  enjoy the fountains in the open central courtyard, watch kids running through the community water playground.
(iv)  an intriguing gallery awaits….. must try, must see…
(v)  have a "Picnic at the Barrage"  ….BYO picnic basket.  Yes, it is allowed but NO Littering & CLEAN UP! before you leave.

Duration:  less than 2hours; you may stay as long as you wish but, do catch the Last Bus out.
**Last Bus from Marina Barrage: 9.00pm

Meeting Point & Time: Entrance to Marina Barrage Main Lobby at 4.30pm sharp.

Though the Barrage is completed; the area directly around it is still under heavy construction.  I had recced this place 3x.  There are
shady roads but I believe no one would want to walk along the dusty roads where trucks with sand, stones rumbled past….
So, for the safety of all, take the MRT!

How to get there:
MRT Station:  Marina Bay, EXIT B, walk straight out, turn right to the Pick-up stop to board the Free shuttle bus service to Marina Barrage.
The shuttle is approx at 10 minute intervals, subject to traffic conditions. 

Those who drive:
from ECP Exit 17A;
from AYE Exit 18;
from Cross Street/Central Boulevard;
from Maxwell Road/Marina Boulevard(NTUC Centre);

THEN travel on…. Marina Station Road/Marina Place/Marina Mall/Marina Grove/Marina way to Marina Barrage entrance/carpark. Free parking.


What to bring:
Your camera!
A shawl or something to keep you warm, might get chilly at sundown.
Sun visor or cap(hold on to it, lest it is blown away).  There are shades but one might not get a good view.  
Bring umbrellas, but hold on to it lest it is blown away!

NOTE:
A cafe serves light snacks & from Sundown it will be a pub with ‘live’ music & serves finger food. 
A restaurant serves ala carte dinner.

Third SHC Dinner & Dance 2009- Update 3

 INVITATION FOR MEMBERS TO SHOWCASE THEIR SKILLS AND TALENTS

Most of our members have some skills or talents. SHC TALENT SHOW 2009 aims to showcase their less known skills and talents to the club in third SHC Dinner and Dance 2009 on 4th April 2009. The show will encourage the participants to improve and master their skills and talents to their best.

The show will be in 4 segments

  1. Dance Performance.  In addition to Social, Latin, Ballroom and Line dances, the show encourages our members to show their skill in 1. Indian (Bollywood) dance 2. Malay dance 3. Chinese dance 4. Perankan dance 5. Folk dance 6. Others. The dances may be solo , couple  or group dances.
  2. Song Rendition (to Disc music): Members, wanting to sing, have to bring their songs in disc. Normally singers sing to Cha Cha beat. In order to have variety of music beats and also to encourage the members to groove the music, we request members to sing to O/B cha cha, Disco, Rock&Roll, Jive, Square Rumba, Rhythm, Latin Rumba, Samba, Waltz, Tango etc beats. The songs may be solo, duet or group songs.
  3. Games: The members can organise games of their own choice or they can choose the games, our committee is having.
  4. Talent Show:  Playing any musical instruments, mimicry, stand-up comedy, magic, juggling, play, story-telling, demonstration of Yoga etc.

If there are more responses from members in one or more segments, the decision of the committee is final.

Only members who had registered and paid the D&D cost in full will be eligible for selection to participate in the segment when there is overwhelming response to participate in that segment.

In order to encourage more members to participate, preference will be given to group (three or more members) participation for example group dance, group singing.

Registration for the 3rd Dinner & Dance Mega Event is now open.

To avoid disappointment, please register now. Please indicate your preference of food menu, either Vegetarian or Halal at the time of registration.

Payments are to be made either through ATM Transfer or Internet Banking to Chung  Sine Ying Bernadette’s POSB Savings account 005-05093-6.  After you have remitted the payment, please indicate the name of the payee and any identification note via comment under this post.  I will then acknowledge all payments received and mark ‘Paid’ against the name of the registrants.Please note that once payment is made, it is non-refundable. However, under special circumstances, a request for transfer of registration to another person may be considered on a case by case basis. Thanks for your kind co-operation and understanding.

It will be free seating for all attendees on the D & D night. Limited Tables are open for Booking.  Any member is welcomed to book a whole table for his/her SHC friends so that they can be seated together.
