Swimming at Changi Beach club, Sun 25 May 2008

I see some SHCians like to swim. Am going to CBC on Sun 25 May 2008, 0900 – 1200 hrs for a swim. You are invited, if you love to swim in a rectangular size pool. If you like to see submarines between P Ubin and Singapore mainland, also can come. Sometimes, they surface, with their periscope up. The last I saw a submarine was 20 years ago. Have a chit chat, also boleh. If you are coming, I shall take care of entrance fee. You can order your own drinks or breakfast there at CBC. Have a relaxing Sunday morning then. Do register here, if coming.

One SHC member will be appointed to write the monthly update, each month

Hi SHCians,

I have been thinking it is rathering boring to read the monthly updates, written by Terence.  To give it some oomph, I would ask one SHC member to write the monthly update.  This should make the update more readable and enjoyable.

Generally, the monthly update should carry some information on the events in the coming month, plus some exciting reflection.  I shall then arrange to send out the monthly updates.  Should not be too long, averaging half a screen.  We shall try this for one year.  Have fun.

Catherine Kuah – Profile

Hi SHC friends

Both my husband and I have just joined the club and we hope to participate in some of your many interesting activities.

We have two grown up children, one working and the other still pursuing tertiary education in Melbourne. Having had worked in the hectic corporate world for a few decades, I have recently decided to call it a day to spend quality time with the family and also to be kind to myself, have fun and enjoy life a little bit (instead of work, work & work)! Thus I would certainly look forward to making more friends and have a more fulfilling life! May I wish all of you good health and happiness!

Cheers

Catherine

Are you practising Tai Chi?

Today, being a Sunday, I went to Lumpini Park (Bangkok).  Here, you will find many Thais with their famiies and clans practising all kinds of healthy exercises.  In particular, my focus was on the different groups practising Tai Chi in slow motion, dressed in colourful T-shirts and pants.  Usually, the men and women are spread over an area, as wide as the music can cover.  At the end of the session, the group would congregate for Chinese Tea and continue chatting until the sun bites into their skin.

Are you practising TaiChi, in the morning, and where in Singapore?  How long have you been doing this exercise, and how many people are there in your group?

Invest in Foreign Currencies – ST 4 May 2008

Everybody should cut this out. Today ST Sun May 4 2008 ( Invest Page 19) has a lead article on Foreign Currency investment. The areas examined are

(a) Buy low, Sell high ie trading foreigh currencies

(b) Carry Trade

(c) Invest in high yielding currencies like Aussie and Kiwi

The ST report  relates mainly to physical currency converted from SGD. It is what most layman would do when they think of foreign currency. But this is an inefficient and costly way to address to opportunities in the currency world.

You should be thinking about forex which is a leveraged and derivative of the underlying foreign currency. The confusion is because they share very similar name.  You can do everything you want to with physical currencies much more efficiently with forex.

(a) This is a no brainer. It’s just directional trades with forex

(b) It doesn’t really make much sense to do simple carry trade in both physical and derivative. The underlying volatility of currencies will make the carry trade irrelevant. In the end the cross rate between the currency will dominate and decide the P&L in the trade most of the time.

(c) Long the physical and hedge with the derivative. Eg buy the KIWI currency for the near 9% interest rates for long term. Dynamically Value Hedge (DVH) the KIWI and USD forex. The likelyhood is that you will make three ways – capital gains on the KIWI, interest income and DVH profit.

Compare to the conventional method. If you just long the physical KIWI, whatever you make on the interest rates you may lose back on the KIWI to SGD conversion given the strength of SGD. You don’t have the benefit of any profits from DVH.

Virtual Shop & Flea Market, Wed 7 May 2008

Here’s another fun meeting.

Subject: Home Entrepreneur – Virtual Shop & Flea Market

Date / Time : Wed 7 May 2008 7pm

Venue: Scorebot, 18 Bali Lane

We are invitating all aspiring Home Entrepreneurs to form  Virtual Shops.

A virtual shop has the following advantages

– List of instant turnkey businesses that you can get in now starting with consignment stock lots. First come, first serve. Once booked we try not to create internal competition for the same product line.

– A low-cost, global MNC for you. We can help in funding to merchandising.

– It operates like a 3-in-1 business ie a  physical shop, on-line marketeer and event/flea market enterprise

– Facilities to sell for auction of limited items and sales of mass products

– Internet marketing of products including blogging and search engine optimixation. We save by marketing the whole group as one classified listing.

– Save on shop rental. We share physical facilities for OTC sales (over-the-counter), storage and logistics

– Save on  inventory working capital to hold stocks. Inventory is from collection and consignment.

– Save on  fixed labour costs. We  pool professional management and staff.

– You can help out in the planning of the next event. Flea market music festival. (Be the early bird to book the prime location.)

– You don’t even have to leave your full time job. Start a virtual shop now and sack your boss by New Year. Remember to collect your bonus first before you tell him what you really think of him and his stupid ideas. Tell him to lick his own azz and hopes that he works till he die.

Hee-hee

See you boys and girls.
