2010 Annual Dinner & Dance

I met up with a few SHCians last night; and a question popped up as to when this year’s annual dinner and dance will be held, and where?  So far, no indications yet, as we have not had a DO.  Well, please hold on, and once someone puts his/her hand up, we can have this event.  Maybe, soon.

So, if you are eager to organise one, have a go.  We dont expect the perfect D&D; as some disorganisation is good for our soul.  Anyone?

Laugther Exercise, Tuesday 25 May 2010 8 to 9 pm Geylang Serai Comunity Club

Wandering through the public gardens at Lokhandwala Park in Mumbai, India, early in the morning, you might cross paths with a mirthful group of folks contorting their faces and laughing in unison. After 15 or 20 minutes of deep breathing and ho-ho-ha-has, followed by simulated laughter including hearty guffaws, quiet tee-hees, roaring lion laughter, silent laughter, and tittering cocktail laughter, the group disperses, beginning the day with a smile.
The more than 900 laugh clubs in India are the inspiration of Dr. Madan Kataria, who observed while working as a family physician that patients’ immune systems and general well-being improved following bouts of laughter. Kataria eventually left his medical practice and fine-tuned to a near-science his daily regimen of "thought-free" laughter, creating yoga laughter classes that have spread from India to the Far East, Europe, and North America.
Kataria’s methods have found a strong supporter in the United States. "I felt a great calling, a synchronicity with the information, and felt I needed to deliver this message," says Steve Wilson, a psychologist of 40 years who met Kataria and is now one of America’s leading "joyologists." Wilson has certified more than 100 laugh leaders–among them high school students and inmates at King County’s North Rehabilitation Facility. "I was astonished how much research had been already done that substantiated what I thought to be true," he says.
Within the burgeoning field of gelotology (from the Greek gelos, or "laughter"), the scientific study of laughter, an expanding body of research is being compiled. Over 500 academicians belong to the International Society for Humor Studies, and doctors, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals increasingly prescribe laughter therapy to help people cope with physical, mental, and spiritual issues.

20 Minutes of Dr Madan Kataria Laughter exercise is akin to 2 hours of brisk walking. If you are interested register here for free on Tuesday, 25 May 2010, 8 to 9 pm Geylang Serai Community Club. lst floor, Dance Studio. Laugther exercise is last Tuesday of the month.

Take a train to Paya Lebar MRT Station, walk 10 mins towards Lion City (behind is Haig Road), walk straight, you will see butterworth, then Ipon Lane and lastly Thiam Siew Avenue on the right of Haig Road, Geyland Serari Community Club is just on the left side of Thiam Siew Avenue.

I will be here. Come and join us and have a fun night laughter and sweating your way.

Cheers

David Shung – Member Profile

Hi all, I am David, Singaporean, aged 53, Chinese and married. I work as a full-time tutor, teaching mainly Maths to upper Primary and Sec 1 pupils. I enjoy my work and rest days are Sundays and some public holidays. When free, I read, watch movies, meet with family members and close friends, go window-shopping with my wife and have a good meal together. By the way, I’m a vegetarian..:) I used to play golf, but gave up two years ago, since I can’t play like Tiger Woods..:)

I am most willing to share my expertise and experience with SHC members in areas like education, investment and Forex trading. I was in the banking and finance industry for 17 years prior to giving private tuition. I am eager to meet new friends and have a meaningful and fun exchange. I love to travel as well, often making short trips to M’sia.

Hi Everyone, I come to know SHC through the ST, I have been following SHC’s activities, at first out of curiosity and then admiration for what Terence, his fellow founders & all the volunteer EOs of this very good club has done & is continuing to do.

We all know that Singaporean’s ability to always find solutions to their challenges are lengendary!!. Now I’m a proud member of SHC and proud to be associated with such exceptional Singaporeans in the club. Exceptional Singaporeans who collectively, would take the bull by the horns, and face future challenges bravely & with resolve. Resolved that by their collective efforts, their future can definitely be happily brighter ones!!. SALUTE !!

Coming back closer to the surface of our earth, I like to smell the grass, like in our recent EXTreme Ramble!! ( EO Jeff & Joyce ) something I would not ever have done on my own!! Nooks & corners of this lovely island I never thought existed. Or what about that ‘Yum Seng’ all night long, interspeared with flexing dancing muscles at the Kovan( EO AhNee ). Having known Sue Chan since our French classes @ Alliance Francaise several years ago, I joined her small group ‘hanging-out in Phnom Penh for 4 days together with Co-EO, Jeff Lim. All these activities are experienced with the overflowing warmth & camaraderie of fellow SHCians. Thank you very very much!!

I agree with Terence, our inspirational Founder, that the immediate challenge for us is the Male_Female ratio. As a result of this ratio, there’s less dynamism than we would have expected in our events & activities. I believe a brain-storming session on this issue would be beneficial for the convergence on the disparity.

As I have moved to the other side of my own century, I feel great that there’s such a great club like SHC. I look forward to joining more events, and meeting many other fellow SHC’ians. I have even adopted Jonathan’s post as my personal motto : ” May the rest of your life be THE BEST OF YOUR LIFE”.

Calling all with unusual hobbies and collections

Silver Lining is a bi-monthly magazine that caters largely to readers aged above 45. One of the regular articles
it features are on people with unusual hobbies or collections. The current issue (Apriil – May 2010) features a quirky old SHC geezer who does origami with one hand, and his collection of more than 500 origami books from all corners of the world.

The magazine is looking for more folks with other unusual hobbies or collections to be featured in forthcoming issues. If you have an unusual hobby or collections or know of someone who has, they would love to hear from you.

I have agreed to be Silver Lining’s unpaid contact person for this purpose. To address possible concerns, this message was posted after obtaining prior clearence from Terence.

Best regards,

Ron Koh

Pipe Line Ramble X-treme! Sat, 10 Apr.

(This post was written by Jeffrey)

Date: 10 April 2010 (Saturday)

Start Time: 9 am (approx 9 hours)

Meeting point: Woodland Town Centre, plaza between Blocks 2A and 4A (end point of Pipe Line Ramble 4)

Getting there:
by MRT – Marsiling MRT Station (about 1 km walk)
by Bus – Bus service nos 170, 856, 903, 911, 912

Leaders: Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan

For those who have done part or all of the Pipe Lime ramble series, this is for the masochist in us. The Pipe Line Ramble X-treme is a 4-in-1 combination of the four walks. Total distance is about 25 km walking through a variety of ground from pavement, parks, scrub land, grassland, forest, people’s backyard and of course on the pipe line at certain sections, if you are so inclined. The terrain at parts will be hilly with a few streams to cross and a few walls to climb too.

There will be a lunch stop around Turf City or Sixth Avenue. We’ll play it by ear on that day exactly where.

The walk will end at Pearl’s Hill around 5 or 6 pm. From there we can adjourn to Keong Siak Street for dinner at the either of the famous zhi char restaurants, Kok Sen or Tong Ah to put back all the calories we burnt that day!

The walk will be quite rigorous and be prepared. Wear trekking shoes, if you have otherwise make sure that what you’re wearing gives good traction on uneven ground. Also make sure you are comfortable with walking for 9 hours at a sustained brisk pace before signing up.

Do you have a topic that you can stand up and share with us?

Many of us have wide expereince and skills.  Especially after reaching 45, we must have collected a lot of knowledge.  Some of us have also  picked up social skills and entrepreneurial experience.  Then, there are others who have picked up CARE skills, crafts and hobbies.  Talk about dogs, flowers, plants, deep sea fishing, vitamins, herbs, aeroplanes, dress, cakes, bakery, computers.  Talk about find a friend or a soul mate, a favourite topic of mine.

You too can share these skills and knowledge.  Tell us what you can talk about, we will organise the ideas and then have a session on it.  Anybody who is interested can come along.  You can listen, and you can share the thoughts, views and comments in return.

Only members can talk.  We will co-ordinate the topics,  but you have to submit them here on this forum by 30 April.  I believe we can spread all the topics from now to end of 2010.  Go ahead, and speak your mind.  Please do not send me any emails on this subject.

SEE ANDREA BOCELLI FOR FREE AT BOTANIC GARDENS, May 8 2010

Hi all

There are not a lot of things that comes free in life.  Thanks to Robert, we get to see free movies almost every month :-)

Now I have great news that we can watch Andrea Bocelli for free for those opera fans.  His last visit to Singapore was in 2004 at Singapore Indoor Stadium.  His tickets are super expensive as he is in the same class as Pavarotti.

A Malaysian tycoon has generously brought in Andrea Bocelli and this is not the first time he has done such a charitable act.

Please note that tickets are only given out by ballot and you need to register yourself at ytlconcert2010.com.sg and only a pair will be given.  For those successful applicants, pls put your names on the SHC forum and we will make a picnic out of it.  Of course, now I am crossing my fingers, legs, toes everything to hopefully can be one of those successful applicants.

WHAT YOU WAITING FOR ??!!!  Cheers (*_*) !!!
