Are you 100% retired? or have given up a full or part-time time job?

I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.I believe we have many still-working SilverHairs in our membership.  By full-time, I mean working 9-5 or where the hours worked are long.

By "Still-Working", or partially retired, I am referring to part-time work eg teaching, consultancy, online trading or when the hours worked are a few hours a week.  I also mean "paid work".

By retired, I mean "Not working" at all.  May be looking after grand children, playing mahjong daily,  going holidays, or catching up with friends regularly.

As a show of hands, can you raise your hands, so we know, you are retired, and what do you do in the course of the week? We may be able to learn from you how to go about our later part of our lives.

I hope that SilverHairsClub can also provide more opportunities for 100% retired members to gather together.

Look forward to know the real retirees.

Exploring JB as a place to spend for retirement and healthcare

Hi guys and gals,

Once in a while, some members have expressed interest in looking at JB properties.  Their idea is to rent the properties for retirement or to buy, if the economics make sense.  Unfortunately, some of the organisers with good intentions, withdraw the trip plans, due to lack of support for their suggestions.

There is true the media has reported crimes in JB, theft in non-gated communities in JB, etc etc.

I like to take a different approach.  I think that the situation of many retirees and soon-to-be retirees warrant a relook at JB as a destination for retirement living.  Many Singaporean retirees have nice big or medium big HDB flats, which are probably fully paid.  However, many retirees, not all, see that they are not enjoying the lifestyle that they want.  Got asset, but little cash.  Why not rent the place out, and move to another cheaper place with more space and maybe conditions worth reviewing.

There, then is the possibility of looking for a nursing home, not for now, but maybe the future for ourselves.  Or may be for our old parents, relatives and friends.

I hope we can support those members who want to give JB a look at retirement and nursing opportunities.  Find out what it costs, how safe they would feel confortable with at different places, the good food, the ugly side, the bigger houses, etc etc.  The media has reported the negatives; and some of us have experienced negatives.  But, let’s not let these negatives prevent us from going to have a look.  There are other Singaporeans who have successfully stayed in JB, and come back once a month, to see their friends or for medical.  So, again, Let’s gives others a chance.

As such, I have requested Daniel Kang, who lives in JB most of the time, to coordinate this activity, from JB.  It is likely we will adopt the following approaches.

  • Daniel will assist to organise a van, likely a 9 seater from morning to late afternoon.
  • He will make arrangements to view some properties, maybe the Iskandar project and a nursing home.
  • He will arrange to meet some condo and house representatives, so that those who attend can get an idea of the possibility in JB.
  • The nursing home for Singaporean is also of interest, and I have asked him to work on this.
  • Towards the end of the day, we can land at some makan places, have a good meal before going back to Singapore.
  • All transport to JB and return will be organised by the individual.  Daniel’s task will be to pick up in JB and return you to JB.

I think that this activity would not suit everybody; but it is for those who wants to explore the possibility of another option.  Everybody has different situations, so, give every body a chance.  Dont let our experiences with negatives discourage other members from seeing the other side of the river.

Daniel will get back to us soon.  I thought it would be nice to inform you of this plan.  More later.  And, of course, if you live in JB and like to help us with seeing JB from the same angle, send me an email.  If you have interest to participate, please put your name down to register, and once the details are available, you can decide if you can make the date.

A regular SHC meeting point in the West, for retirees

I have been exploring the possibility of having other SHC regular gatherings outside the central area in Singapore.  Last week, I spoke with Vincent Khoo, who lives in Jurong East.  In general, since he is retired, and would also like to gather and coordinate SHC members together on a regular basis.

In general, I have some agreement and understanding on having a monthly gathering there at Jurong East, for those members who live in the West.  Key points are:

  • Place – Jurong East
  • Venue likely a food court.  This is being explored by Vincent. Food court Kopitiam, 2nd floor, IMM
  • Time – 10 am – 12nn or 2pm to 4pm, a weekday
  • Frequency – likely once a month
  • Date:  Fri 10 Feb 2012
  • Residents – those who are retired and live in the best.
  • Transport – MRT, Jurong East.
  • Food – As you would buy from the food court.
  • fees – there are no charges.
  • Topic – Vincent will lead.  But, participants can suggest topics.

Soon, I will announce the start of these gatherings.  Note:  The usual monthly gatherings for all members will still continue; although this one will be in the West for retired SHCians.

For your info, thoughts and comments.  If anyone has suggestions, and would like to lead in the East and North, please share your thoughts here.  This is to be a regular happening.  We will take it from here.

If you are living in the West, and would like to be part of this grouping, please register here.

Looking for ideas on how to train those with little internet knowledge

Many members who can access SilverHairsClub.com have at least the basic knowledge on how to use the internet, for emailing and searching for the information they want.  Of course, there are always alot to learn, and some members have more than working knowlede of the internet.  Others find that the internet is frightening to them, and do not use the internet for the daily use.  Many do not use the net, because their children do not allow them to use the home computer, or they do not have one PC to use.

The area that may be of concern is the lack of computer knowledge and use of the internet.  Many just are too frighten to use the internet. Some may be worried about messing up the data inside the computer, if they press the wrong button.  For others, getting the mouse to move is mind boggling.

Today, without the internet, some of us can be lost.  We either queue up at the bank counter, or we do our transaction online.  We either buy newspapers or we read the news on the IPAD or a smartphone.  We may be still sending Christmas cards, while for many, they no long send cards nor receive cards.  What’s happening?

I think that internet training may be a good project to undertake.  We had courses before, but they are no longer pursued.  For some, we prefer senior trainers and not some 25 year old telling us what to do.  We dont want to attend classes with other 25 years old, less we may appear odd.  Yes, many members are good enough with the internet.

As this is the new year, I am thinking we can revisit the issue of internet training and PC training.  We have tried, but we were not able to continue.  Do you think this is a cost issue?  Or is the fact that we cannot have courses, due to lack of venues or lack of computers?  Or, we have no trainers, or enough members willing to share?  Or are the rates charged too high, even if they are the same rate charged by the venue operators?  Or should trainers be paid?

This is the beginning of the year.  I hope you can share your thoughts on how we can get internet training going on, on a continuous basis.  Have you a suggestion or idea?  Dont worry about feasibility.  An idea or suggestion is still an idea.  Share it with us.  We might pick up these ideas for implementation.  Please respect other members ideas, whether you think workable or not.  Even if running internet courses or IT training is your line, say something so we can hear you too.

How to  provide internet knowledge to those who would like to know more about the internet and PC? Including those with no knowledge at all.

A charity idea and potluck. Will this work?

Sometime, in 2012, we should do something simple and yet feasible for sme charities in Singapore.  In the past, some members have embarked on visits to homes and providing some food and entertainment for the day.  In some cases, some monies were collected and given to the selected charity.

I had the privilege to spend some time discussing with some SilverHairs other options or ways of giving monies to charities.  This good deed may be debatable to some people, for various reasons.

Many members are keen to support charities, but this act has to be sincere, genuine and support a good cause.  i hope I am not starting a debate on the why’s of giving to charities.

The discussion caught my attention, and I was hoping to find some way of giving to charities.  This is a big potluck event where participants contribute a potluck item to the event.  Those wshing to try and buy an item pay, say 2 dollars, for one item. Let’s say we open this event to the public.

All proceeds, we donate to charities.  And, if the idea is good, we do this event once ayear.  We may even combine this event with another event.

Let’s take some time to discuss.  What do you think?  Please do not trash any ideas or suggestions.

Soon, it will be 2012. What are your wishes? Someone or some group may make your wish come true

All of us have wishes.  Perhaps, many of our wishes have not come true.  I hope you don’t give up.  Very soon, it will be 2012.  And, again, it’s a good time to make a few wishes.  Share your wishes.  And, perhaps, the All of us have wishes.  Perhaps, many of our wishes have not come true.  I hope you don’t give up.  Very soon, it will be 2012.  And, again, it’s a good time to make one or a few wishes.  Share your wishes.  And, perhaps, someone will listen to them; and make your wish come true.

Better still, some of your friends in the club may like your wishes, and will also help to make your wishes and dreams come true.

If you have wishes for the club, or there is something you like SilverHairsClub to do for you, this is a good time to share your wish.  You never know. Give it a go!

Have you ever got stuck underground in a train?

Early this week, I was stucked underground while in the circle line, at NEX.  I thought it was an exciting happening, as I had never got stucked while taking the train.

Well, this evening, I was stucked again, but this time, somewhere underground near Dhoby Ghaut station.  Not too sure, what’s the cause for the train stopping along the tracks; but again, it was an exciting happening.  I watch the world go round.  First, the aircon was giving out warm stale air.  Only emergency lights were on. Then, there was announcements that the there was a fault, and everybody were advised not to be alarmed. Many were cool at the announcements; some played their IPAD2; others were fiddling with the smart phones.  This was a good opportunity to listen to local Singaporean English.  At first, I thought it was kind of haphazard; but very quickly, I realize the staff were doing a fabulous job in keeping the passengers cool and calm.

Suddenly, I heard shouts of "keep left, keep left".  Then, I saw from not so far away fire-fighters, first-aid members and other security personnel.  It’s interesting to see that we tend to get confused as to where is left, when one is underground.

I did not keep track of the time, but it was long.  I learn a few things.  I think many Singaporeans, especially ladies, tend to faint easily.  Then, they really blur out.  Then, they quickly ask for help, and soon came the stretchers.  Aiyah, but this wasnt very exciting.

The exciting part for me was when the train operators decided that passengers can go out through the head of the train.  I didnt realise how far I was seated from the head of the train.  So, I decided to let everybody go out, and I sat through.  Oh Gosh, there must be a few hundred people in one train; and it takes a long time for the passengers to walk out calmly and slowly.  Imagine, if everybody panicked, and decided to rush out.

I was among the last few; and this was the first time, I walked the tracks.  Guess, the SHC walkists would have done a better job.  Anyway, I finally walked up to the Dhoby Ghaut station; and was directed to take the circle line to Bishan.  And, that’s where the nightmare for me started.

Two train faults and delays in one week really tested my patience.   I got called Uncle so many times.  Ok, enough from me.  Have you experienced train delays or being stucked in our public transport system?

Chinese New Year Breakfast dimsum, Sun, Jan 29, 2012

This Sun Jan 29, 2012, we we should celebrate the arrival of the Snake Dragon year.  All of us have celebrated Lunar New Years; and like what most of our parents expect, a reunion is good for family ties.  This is one occasion where we may be anywhere in the world now; but the reunion day is a must to meet, at least once a year.

For a start, if you are available in Singapore on this date, please write this appointment in your diary.  We have scheduled the event, although there are still many areas we have not tidied up.  If you  have ideas or suggestions, please share with us here.

  • Date :  Sun, 29 Jan 2012
  • Time :  8 am (come at 7.30 am also can)
  • Venue :  RED STAR Restaurant – 54 Chin Swee Road, Level 7.

I do think we should have a restaurant that is already decorated up for the Lunar New Year. This is an old place, no need to do any decor, and still carries the CNY mood.  Dont mind if we have to share with other diners.  Maybe we can entertain them.

  • Dress: Red and/or traditionally Chinese
  • What to bring: A pair of Mandarin orange
  • Menu:  Am hoping we can have a dim sum set, for around 12 – 17 dollars.  Someone told me I was dreaming.  I was living in the early 1990’s.  The price is now set at $30 per person.  Will use any excess money to buy lottery/toto tickets.

Today, we may be 6 2 weeks are just a few days away from the event date.  I guess some of you may have made plans to go to Genting casino or overseas at Sentosa.  But, if you like the idea of joining other fellow SHCians for a Lunar New Year reunion lunch, please indicate your name here.  If you have something on at a later date, you may withdraw before Jan 15.  Hopefully, this will help the planning committee, which has not yet been formed.

And, my favourite request has always been, if you can help in the organising committee, this will be great.  I look forward to your assistance.  Simply raise your hand.  So, you can help do a part with suggestions and ideas.

Business advertising may be allowed on this forum next year

Since the beginning of the club, advertising has not been allowed on this forum.  One key reason was because we don’t want to be flooded with advertising.  A number of members have questioned why.  Some thought has been given to this issue in recent months.

Advertising for personal items, used or new, rent or sale, has been relaxed recently; and we have started with Jassmine running the monthly online Fleamart.  Jassmine can adjust the rules accordingly where the online fleamart is concerned.

Corporate or business advertising will be allowed next year.  This will take the form of a rectangular box, exactly the size of the box below the VJ screen.  This advertising space can be linked to an URL.  For members Individual or Corporate, the rate will be $30 per 30 calendar days.  For non-members, the rate will be $200 for the same period.  Again, MLM advertisements are not allowed.

To advertise, please send an email with the digital artwork to admin@SilverHairsClub.com.

Next year 2012, all SHC monthly gatherings will be scheduled

The SilverHairsClub monthly gathering is an important event and has become a feature of SHC.  As we have no physical club location, we make use of available venues in Singapore that meets our needs. This is a monthly event; and we hope that all members will make effort to attend this event, even though we may have little groups here and there.  It should meet the key objective of providing a platform for new and old members to meet up with one another, at a big venue.

We have not been very organised but I have noted suggestions from members to pre-schedule the monthly gatherings early.  So for 2012, we will pre-schedule the gatherings.  The biggest hurdle in not doing so, is the difficulty of finding last-minute Event Organisers EOs.

Generally, a monthly gathering should be conveniently located on the map; close to MRT stations.  Food should not be a priority; and members should be able to order food individually off the counter.  For reasons of I dont like hot food, the food is too oily, I have my dinner already, I just want a drink and the food price is too expensive, the location should be flexible to meet this requirement.  Food should not be a priority.  The EO is the only one who can make the decision re the venue and the date.  This will be done in consultation with the imcumbent Club Manager.

Somehow, I get the feeling that 90% of our active members are still working, so many can come after work; but we must not miss out those who have retired or have flexi-working hours.  Still, there are others that stay in Jurong, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Hougang and Changi.  And, more there are others, who still have grand children to look after, and may only be available on weekends.  Many, many, many factors.  But, let’s try.  So, the venue must be able to cater to changes in numbers (pax) too.

Other requirements for EO events are the personalised name tags, RED for new members and pre-registration of attendance.

I am glad we are likely to have a good start to this arrangement for 2012.  And, I am pleased also that a number of members, including new ones, have kindly and openly accepted being the EOs for the monthly gatherings in 2012.  You only need to do one EO activity for the whole of your membership.  I hope more members will do their share to contribute this task.  So, here goes.

  • Jan – Lily Ho
  • Feb – Janie Leong
  • Mar – Andrey Wong
  • Apr – Peter Lim
  • May – Dan Huang
  • Jun – Richard Wong
  • Jul –  Peri Liew
  • Aug – Victor Khor
  • Sep – Henry Foo
  • Oct – May Woo
  • Nov – Caroline Gee
  • Dec – Jane Tan

So for all EOs, please starting writing a few Posts, so that you are familiar with communicating with other members.  As an EO, this event is the best opportunity to know other members and for other members to know you.  Thank you very much; and I shall be in touch with you soon.

“Rise in demand for eldersitters” in Today’s Straits Times

For some of us, we are still fit, healthy and mobile.  For some of us, we probably have difficulties leaving our house, and may be seriously feeling lonely at home.  ST reported that more households seek services that provide companionship for elderly members.  I am sure some of you have relatives and friends who are lonely at home, and in need of company; someone to chat with, share TV dramas together, need help with feeding or maybe just at home waiting for their sons and daughter-in-laws to return from work.

Even those with maids and family members at home may need to take some time off to go off for short errands and attend to children’s qactivities, thus leaving the senior at home.

Providing companionship to seniors can also include playing cards together, helping to prepare an afternoon tea or helping with simple basis exercises. It is interesting to read that most seniors who require companionship during certain day hours, prefer Singaporeans, as we have a better understanding of languages, dialects and culture.  Another preference reported was the age range of 35 to 55, as this group understands seniors better.

Such services will increase in demand, as the baby boomers get older in Singapore.  Service rates are around $20 per hour.  With many family adults working today, our aging population will definitely need companionship and some home care in our homes.  Like in our Asian culture, we looked after our children when they were young.  For some families, we may have the luck to have our children looking after us.  For others, we may want to live our SilverHairs years alone.

I hope to read your feedback and comments on this story.  It is in the STraits Times, Home, Part B.  Some of your feedback, thoughts, ideas and suggestions may be beneficial to government and institutional bodies.  We may be able to pick up some good follow up ideas from here. Please respect the views of other members.

Latest:

From your feedback, there is a niche demand for eldersitters or elderly companionship services, on a one-to-one.  We also need to gauge if we have sufficient numbers to start an eldersitter servoice from within SilverHairsClub.  If you would like to be an eldsersitter, under the umbrella of SilverHairs Enterprise and SilverHairsClub, please send me an email at  admin@SilverHairsClub.com, expressing your interest.  We would initially work on a first come basis.

SilverHairsClub Dec 2011 updates by Frisna Tan

Below is this month’s SHC updates on events to all members.

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

My name is Frisna Tan.  I have been a SHC member since Aug 2008.  This month, I am writing the SilverHairsClub end Nov news update.  I hope you like it, and that this
will be an encouragement for members who have yet to participate actively in the club.

I turn Double Five recently. Sad? No. Feel old? absolutely not!

In fact I feel good and energetic after badminton every week.  cycling home with the new bike (b/d present) and letting the wind blow my hairs and dry my sweat – life is so bright and sunny!

To me, age is just a string of days, months, years pieced together. yes, we do miss some pieces here and there. forget what we did on certain days and what happened to our life on a particular period of time, but it’s all right. It’s normal.

If you find a group of friends not to your liking or their thought/interest not in sinc with yours, it’s ok. just move on to find another group. The most important thing is YOU MUST NOT GIVE UP! Try, try and try again until you’re successful.

Recently I talked to 1 of the participants at our tea time potluck gathering. He said it’ll be good if there’s someone we can always talk to in time of sadness and happiness (he’s single) rather than just coop up inside. I agree with him 100%. It feels good if there’s always someone to talk to no matter what the subject is right? (and prevent you from doing something silly like what the Samaritan SOS do).

so if you feel like talking to someone but not sure whether the person will share your feeling or whether he/she will keep your secret – then talk to me. I volunteer to be SHC LISTENING EARS!

But before that, do participate in SHC activities like what’s lining up here for you…cheerio!

A new role “SHC VJ”

Music makes the world go round.  This is definitely true, judging from the music and songs that are played on this website and during our varied events.  I have played the role of the Video Jockey.  In this role, I pick songs from the 60s and 70s, and play them on the top left hand corner of the Club’s website.  These music clips can also be from any era, and any language.  Sometimes, the video can be inline with current activities and members’ requests.

It’s about time, we get rid of the current VJ; and offer this role to an existing member.  Some pre-requisites would include:

1.  Familiar with songs from the 60 and 70s, in our common languages and dialects.

2.  You are a believer that "Music makes the world go round".

3.  Familiar with the SHC culture, and loves helping fellow members get to know new and more friends.

4.  Able to spend 30 mins a week, to select videos and upload this video to our web server.

5.  This role is not difficult; although the person should love working on the computer and internet.

6.  Can be of any sex and and age.

7.  Term: 1 year.  Candidates are required to ensure confidentiality on all membership database.  Those who cannot maintain strict confidence with email information need not apply.

If you like this role, please email to me.  Thank you.

New Picture Manager Role wef 01 Jan 2012

We have Sock Cheng (Sockie) as our Picture manager for some time already.  She has done a good job during this time, and has ensured that all EO events pictures are properly uploaded and documented.

She has also been active taken pictures at most events, and a sure prominent person to either be in front of or away from.

Well time for a change.  Wef 1 Jan 2012, we will have a new Picture Manager to take over this role. This person is none other than Lee King Seng, whom many of you would have known during bowling activities and group events.  King Seng has taken some time to consider, and I am glad he has finally accepted this role.

Thank you King Seng.  And thank you to Sock Cheng, whom I will likely ask to take another role.

How many reasons are there to explain for what will happen to the Singapore economy this year end and next year?

That’s nice.  I just read Dow 30 got hammered.  And Euro stocks are again slammed left and right.  And, we now hear the Super committee is going to be a failure.  And, our Singapore economy is going to register growth of between 1 and 3% next year.  The Straits Times reported job lost is going to be likely next year.  May or may not be a repeat of 2007/8; but nonetheless, we are talking about it.

We talk alot about our activities and our social lives.  Let’s share some talk about the world around us or the Singapore we have here. What do you think? And how do you feel about the year end and next year.

An opportunity for SilverHairs to meet one another on Tues, 6 Dec 2011 at Hans, while the mood is fresh, lively and festive

Hi everybody,

It’s been a long time since we last met at Hans Cafe @ Upper Pickering Street.  Many of us have not met one another while for some, it’s like donkey years.  I like it when you meet new friends.  I also like it when you catch up with old ones.

SilverHairs are very chatty.  Sometimes, they can even bring down the roof of Hans Cafe.  Well, we have many stories to catch up, new plans for next year.  Also, a good time to liaise plans for travel.  Got some old books to give away.  Or some relationships to patch up.  Some goodies to give away.  So, find out who is coming; then come.  If your friends are not coming, it might be too lonely of you to come alone.  But, if your friends are coming, come loudly.  No friends, say something here; and you will have a new friend in no time.

So, here’s the details of this event.

  • Date:  Tue 6 Dec 2011.
  • Time:  4pm to 8.30pm  (Even if you are late after work, also can register to come).
  • Charge:  Free.  If you need a drink or some dinner, you can get it at the Hans Counter.  I think they charge. Dont bring food or drinks, or Hans will skin us alive.)
  • Dress:  Any office wear; or anything.
  • Only registered SilverHairsClub members are allowed to participate in this event.

If you are new or has never come to a SilveHairsClub activity, please introduce yourself here.  Dont be shy. But if you are not shy, tell us also about yourself, the louder the better.  I like to suggest you wear RED, then we know you are new.  SilveHairsClub has one of the most varied name tags.  Please make your own name tag.  Anything you like can be on it; except no advertising of companies.  Just first and last name.

But, if you are not new, and has come to our activities a few times, please wear GREEN or BLUE tops.  Bring your name tag, or make one yourself.  Make sure your name is big, clear and friendly.  Or we would just give you a sticky label to put on your dress or shirt.

What do you do when you come?  First, do not sit down.  Secondly, say "Hi, My name is Mitchelle Yip.  May I know your name?".

Like with all events, you need to register to come.  Please be the first 80 members to register.  Non SHC members are not allowed please.

I look forward to seeing big wide smiling faces.

Going to Petaling Jaya by coach?

I need some advice.  Instead of flying to Subang or KLIA, I am thinking
of thinking of taking a coach to PJ this Thur morning.  Am hoping to save
some time and, some dollars and also the waiting time at airports.  I find
the time taken to get out of KLIA into PJ or KL too cumbersome and long.

Have you been to PJ on a comfortable coach?  Your recommendations would
be great.

SilverHairsClub members update, as of Nov 2011

We have recently done a clean-up of our membership database.  I have
been very pleased with the returns in the last two weeks, especially with
verifying membership details.  Many duplicated membership have been
removed.

The latest count is 5,250 live individual members.  Out of this total,
about 2,300 members read the club’s forum regularly.   So, we
can see there is a difference between those who read the club
forum, those who are inactive members and those who are regular
participants.

One of our weakness is our inability to chat and interact with those who are
members, but are inactive, for different reasons.  Very few active
members volunteer or raise their hands to befriend this silent group.  I
do not know why.

However, I am glad to see members like Jassmine Teo, Frisna Tan and YatSing
put in effort to voice out for this silent group.  Joy Chuang is also
looking after a group.  Some of us may think there is not much we can do,
for those who are busy, shy and afraid to join the more senior and active
ones.  But, if you can do a little, this will be go a long way to
welcome the quieter ones.

Our EOs for different activities have done a good job maintaining their
activities.

So, again, if you are a member, have been participating in SHC
activities, and have not been an EO, please consider doing your part to be a
Befriender.  You only need to take care of 10 – 20 members.   I
hope to see you raise your hand.

November monthly update was written by Jassmine Teo

This month’s monthly update was written by Jassmine Teo, also our Online Fleamart Coordinator.  If you had received it, it means your email address is correct.  If you have not received it, it is likely you are not a registered member.

If you have been a member for more than one year, and would like to address fellow SilverHairsClub members, please write to me.

November’s editorial by Jassmine:

"Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

The Silverhairs Club just crossed its 6th year and is still going strong!  There is, however, a concern about the silent majority. Why are they not active in the club’s activities? A few had written to say work kept them away. A few others had written about feeling apprehensive and nervous arising from their perception of existing cliques in the club.  To address this concern, the club has introduced the role of Befrienders and also organized an event catering to apprehensive members.

The Botanic Gardens seems to be a very popular venue for SHC activities in November. Three scheduled activities are taking place at the Botanic Gardens, namely:

1)  November walk on Sat. 12th.        https://silverhairsclub.com/?p=3921
2)  Potluck picnic on Thur 17th.         https://silverhairsclub.com/?p=3915 and
3)  Photography outing on Sat 19th.  https://silverhairsclub.com/?p=3928.

On Sun. 27th, members can look forward to a drama performance cum Canto karaoke at SAFRA Tampines. https://silverhairsclub.com/index.php?s=canto.  However, the one day trip to Kulai town has been cancelled due to concern over possible flooding in JB.

May all members have an active time in November.

Using email addresses collected from members for spam mails

Hi everbody,

Very often, email addresses are exchanged during social get-togethers.  Sometimes, invitations are sent out from one member to another member or group.  Sometimes, members display their email addresses on the forum.  As a result, a big list of emails can be collected over time.

Members who wish to send unsolicited emails, please do ask for permission from the members first.  It is not nice to send unsolicited emails.  For complaints, please respect the receiver’s request.

If you have a joke or story to tell, you may do so over this forum, thus reducing the number of complaints from members, especially when there are multiple responses.

Thank you.

Other events in the coming months

After the Hokkien Karaoke event, I hope to see other events coming up.  For those who are planning to be EOs of this event, you may also approach Dolly Lim or other senior SHC members for assistance.

I hope that the Canton event will take place next month.  The year end is coming; so do think about Christmas and year-end get-togethers.  Also, a New Year’s eve or New year event.  If you have a big bonus, maybe a generous one will work too.  I am out of Singapore during Dec and Jan, so I am unable to join any activity.

Chinese New Year comes early next year, so if we have a CNY lunch, this will be a good idea too.  Hope someone picks this up and raise his/her hand.

Little parties here and there.  Yes, many of you have made friends, so I would think you would have little parties here and there.  I can only say, have fun!

If you have ideas or suggestions, toss them up in the air for all of us to read.

Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub on its 6th Birthday, Oct 2011

SilverHairsClub started in Oct 2005.  With some friends, we conceived the idea of a social group for Singaporeans, over 45.  The idea was to develop a small group of friends whom we could enjoy our time through the years.  However, being novices in this area, the original group of founders were not sure of its success; but we decided to build it on a small scale, step by step.  To keep it as a platform for SilverHairs to meet other SilverHairs, we adopted a few taboos, more because we did not know how to manage these discussions.

While SilverHairsClub is seen as a blog or forum, it is now very much a Club for members to meet and interact with one another.  SilverHairsClub is both virtual and online; and yet it functions as a Club where members meet.  SilverHairsClub.com serves as a focal point for sharing and interaction.  A place where members get together to organise events, chat about this and that, and knowing other members with similar likes and dislikes.

SHC has undergone some small changes over the years.  In the coming months, I hope to see a bigger platform where members can get to meet new and more members.  On the ownership of SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com, I have made the  move to transit it from an individual ownership (myself) to SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  Hopefully, this will receive better recognition and acceptance within the Singapore community.

So, this month is our 6th anniversary, or our 6th birthday.  I hope you will celebrate this birthday occasion with other fellow SHCians.  Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub.

Introduction of Corporate membership to the SilverHairsClub wef 15 Oct 2011

Since Oct 2005, the SilverHairsClub has only accepted individual membership. This means that only individuals or couples over the age of 45 can join in an individual capacity.  Although they may be working for a company, they cannot represent the company or participate in SHC activities on a corporate level.

WEF 15 Oct 2011, we will accept corporate memberships.

  1. Members joining SHC as a corporate member will have their name displayed with their company name displayed beside their name.
  2. Corporate memberships can only be respresented by a person or any number of persons who is 45 years and above.
  3. The rules specifying no discussion on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM will apply.
  4. Advertising is not automatically permitted on the SilverHairsClub forum.  However, if the corporate member wishes to advertise, they may write to admin@SilverHairsClub.com.
  5. Until end Dec 2011, corporate memberships are free. So, if you would also like to represent your company, it is best to do so now.  A joining fee will be implemented on/from 1 Jan 2012.
  6. All corporate members must write an introduction of the company they represent.  As long as it clearly tells what the company is doing, the introduction will be accepted. It is important you state your position in the company.
  7. Corporate members are allowed to invite members to their functions, participate in promotional and marketing events.  However, advertising or promotions on the forum is not permitted.

To join, please write to admin@silverhairsclub.com.

I hope that corporate memberships will improve and enhance the objective of providing a platform for SilverHairs, over 45 to meet new and more friends.  Hopefully, other advantages and benefits will follow.  It is all up to us as members, as we develop the club’s culture along the way.

Are we keeping up with the times?

Almost every single event we have is related to the 50s, 60s and 70s.  When we were young, our parents just could not understand the songs we were listening to.  They were either too hippy, hot, pop or simply romantic or sentimental.

Can we enjoy all the evergreens and classics , and yet keep in step with our children and grandchildren?  I am worried about being out-of-date.  Remember, we use to talk about generation gap.

Well, I play you a song.  It’s the latest craze, all about Cody Simpson, the 15 year old boy whom every teenager boy or girl is talking about.

Should we keep in step?  Should we have some really hot events?

Write your minds, share your thoughts – other ideas

SilverHairsClub is your club; for members who are 45 years and over.  You can share your thoughts with other members to find better value for your money.

For example, you can pool buying.  And assuming, you are looking to buy, say, an IPAD3.  And, you have discussed with Apple that if you can get 20 buyers, you would be able to get a 15% discount.  Please feel free to write a new Post, find out who’s interested, and when you reach 20, you can get these interested buyers to buy an IPAD3 together.  Obviously, the discount has to be good to attract fellow members.  This is only an example.  But, do not use this as an advertising platform.

Another example, you want to join a SPA but you need 4 people to get an "out of this world" discount.  Sure, go ahead and share with other ladies your idea.  Do remember there are  cheats around.  Again, this must not be an advertising for the company.  You can discuss with fellow members via email too.

Feel free to discuss comparative prices of NTUC, Tops, Cold Storage and Seng Shiong stores for products like chicken, milk, bread, plums, eggs, etc.  If you start this comparison, please remember to keep track of the Post and not leave it dangling.  This will encourage other members to regularly give their feedback, even monthly.

It’s ok to compare insurances which are essential to us, especially as we get older.  Only thing is to avoid getting into direct selling.

Feel free to get into this if you are comfortable doing so.

Developing a SilverHairsClub band and singers team

Edwin Chen (Uncle ED) has offered to develop and train a team of singers who can sync with him during live singing sessions.  He is a one-man band; and I am looking at opportunities of having him and a team of singers perform during some of our concerts, talentime and other music & dance activities.

While Edwin has other activities, I am hoping to have this program developed as a SHC project.  If you are interested in being a singer with Edwin, please do send me your singing resume via email terences@SilverHairsClub.com.  Number of participants limited to 4.  Selected candidates will be interviewed sometime next month.

The requirements are:

  1. Has been active in SilverHairsClub for at least one year.
  2. Has sung or performed in singing activities, inside or outside of SHC.
  3. Able to undergo training and practices during noon to late afternoons, initially on weekdays.

Closing date: 15 Oct 2011.

Why is it that some members do not join in SHC activities?

I am in Thailand this week.  Suddenly the country is very optimistic.  High pay for degree holders.  Incentives to control inflation.  More education grants.  Tax reliefs.  Gosh, enough to give the economy a good kick start. After 10 years, the rains are here.  More rains.  But, unfortunately, too much, the rivers are over-flowing too; and North Thailand has begun to flood.  Soon, Central Thailand and today even Bangkok is worried it will have floods.  Luckily I am on a high floor.  I remembered one year, I woke up only to find my place surrounded with water.  But, I do have something serious on my mind.

1.  Once in a whiile, we must reflect on why we have so many members, and yet they do not join us in its activities.  Have we missed out producing activities that do not meet their needs and interests?  Or is it because these members do not have the time and find the venues too inconvenient?  Or is it because some of our activities are expensive and not affordable?

2.  Sometimes, through the talk and chat on our forum, some members feel discouraged to participate or speak their minds because others are just too outspoken or critical, or just simply inconsiderate.  I guess we cannot control sexist talks; but let’s not belittle or downgrade other fellow members. The club was created with the objective of meeting just one main objective.  And that is to provide SilverHairs an opportunity and platform to meet new and more friends.  If you are one of those inconsiderate ones, I hope over time, you will speak with consideration for others.  Respect for other member’s views are very important as we get older.

3.  Another reason why some members do not participate is because they feel SHC is a match-making organisation.  Obviously, not and this has not been its objective.  However, it has been very successful in get members to get to know more friends.  We can tell from the little groups that have popped up here and there.  SilverHairsClub encourages couples to join in, singles, once again singles or married to join in.  We do strive on a variety of activities; and you will note from the EO activities that all events are aimed at getting SilverHairs to meet, interact and getting to know each other better.

4.  Negative thinking is a barrier to members who have good intentions.  We may be a senior SHCian; but that does not entitle us to NOT give someone else the chance.  We push and insist our way with our viewpoints.  Advise, support new members and give them a chance.  Your supportive words are seen around Singapore and the world.

5.  Sometimes, I am asked why I do not support Event Coordinators’ activities?  I definitely support all EO activities, which are strictly for SHC members.  In principle, I leave all EC events to the organisers.  This is because I am not familiar with the activity.  EC events are open to non-SHC members and at this stage, I do not have a strong opinioin on these activities.  However, if the EC organises such events for the benefit of members, and with a focus on SHC members, you can be sure I will give my suport.  If my thoughts are weird and unbalanced, please feel free to let me know.  Ideas would be great too.

6.  Some members have expressed to me that another reason for non-participation of some members is because we do not cater to the below 45, children and friends in particular.  I really do not know what to do.  I am not likely to change my mind.  But I am more than willing to hear you.  Maybe you have a point.

Is there something else that you know that we do not know, that keep members away from the Club.  Please share with us.  What have you heard?  You can bet I will consider your suggestions.

And, to those who are going to be negative, I am receptive to listen to you too.
