Are You a Victim of the Digital Divide?

I am one of the recipients of Silver Infocomm Wellness Ambassador (Ref: C3A –Ageing Well) award 2013. Not quite sure what I am supposed to do.

Anyway, for those who have a passion on smart devices, Information Technology (IT) and the like but do not know how to get started or get involved and challenge yourself, you now has a friend (or ambassador) to come to.

Do you know any senior (or PR) over 50 years of age can now go to any public library and make use of the computers there free of charge (I think for the first hour per day. For longer time, there is a nominal charge).

There are three kinds of seniors … those who know IT and enjoy every minute of it. Those who understand what IT are about but do not know the good and bad about IT and the Internet. I call this group as “driving blindly through the Internet” and many have got their fingers burnt. This is the second kind. The third kind of seniors is those who heard about the usefulness of IT and the smart devices (smartphones, tablets), never use the Internet and do not know how or where to start.

Cha bau wo eng (after eating, still have time) – Do you know, on a monthly basis, I do organise an EC event or IT Interest Group (ITIG) gathering where the above-mentioned three groups have a chance to meet, make friends, get involved and challenge yourselves more. As photography is now also IT related, I do also conduct Photo Walks like yearly Christmas Walk along Orchard Road, Sculpture Hunting in Singapore and places of interests. So far, I have captured about 80 odd. View link to see my on-going project. http://ho-emily.com/pages/index-sculpture.html

For those in the first and second groups and would like to learn more about your iPhones, smartphones or IT related topics, you can contact me through my email address hewlee@gmail.com

For those in the third group who don’t even have an email address of your own, you can come to our monthly ITIG gathering and make yourself known. See what we can do for you. As the saying goes …

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. (“?????????”).

Most of us still do not know the usefulness of being connected to the Internet. I only have one comment to these people … As we enter the group we call ourselves silver hairs or white, brown or no hair, we are becoming less mobile, we tend to stay at home more often. Knowing how to surf the Internet, we can still keep ourselves updated, be in touch with our friends and love ones through emails and video conferencing (Skype, Facetime, etc.), see movies, view videos on things some crazy people do, see magic shows; things we think are impossible but proved us wrong right in front of our eyes, etc. Most of these things are FREE.

Eco Cycling Adventure – Kuching (early Nov 213)

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.  Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle~Ernest Hemingway

Are you looking for a cycling holiday with a distinct difference?

Green on Bikes!!! Nothing is quite like touring on bike for an ecological, cultural, culinary and experiential experience!!!!

Indeed, Sarawak – From pristine underwater marine life and untouched coral reefs to rich heritage and from wilderness to modern city landscape, Sarawak is a potpourri of experiences appreciated by travelers from all over the world. Head into Sarawak’s interiors and your heartbeat will flutter at the fascinating and enchanting dances of the multi-ethnic tribes living harmoniously with each other.

We energize with a team with the best of local knowledge and an insatiable passion for cycling to envision and provide adventurous experience.  With moderate, achievable riding on charming small roads through village communities and lots of local interaction, you will have a chance to learn about the country and the people who live here. Food is a highlight.

Fortunately, cycling offers a low-impact form of physical activity that appeal to a wide range of the population. As long as you’re reasonably fit and familiar with your own limits, you’re a good candidate for a cycling adventure.

Therefore, we are planning a series of cycling adventures in 2014 and the inaugural program is in early November 2013.

Tentative Program:

Day 1: Upon arrival transfer to guesthouse, preparation for the ride.

Day 2: Ride to Fairy Cave, explore the cave and have ethic lunch. Thereafter, ride to Lan-E-Tuyang Home Stay – check in freshen up and go to the gardens to pick durians (subject to season). Enjoy the intercultural experience in music and dance and local food.

Day 3: After breakfast, ride to CMPC, climb to the chapel and after that continue riding back to the city. Check in Riverside Majestic Hotel. Free and easy and have sea food dinner.

Day 4: Breakfast in the hotel, free and easy for shopping et cetera. Check out and transfer to Kuching International Airport for flight to Singapore.

Please indicate your interest here (No obligation) as we shall update the rates and other information. Please advise if you are bringing your own bike (Rental bike in Kuching is RM80 per day)

“I forgot I only exist when you need something from me”

UH-OHH…………..

Yes, when your child says, “I need money to go hang out with my frens after school.  Mommie?  Pretty, please??”

When you are eating your meal and your dog sits right next to you and nudges you on the leg……….

When your husband says “Honey, care to go for a drive to the mall?  I need your help to lug 10 cartons of beer.  My drinking buddies are coming over later.”

Anymore?

High Tea with a small group (6 pax), anyone? on 19-09-2013 (Thursday)

I chanced to come across a cafe with good ambience, good quality bread & confectionery, quiet and good for relax casual conversation. This cafe has a small sitting area. The problem with large group is that not everyone can sit at one table in a large gathering (in any cafe). This will result in many sub-groups formed. To have effective conversation, a small group is desired, possibly 6 pax including me (for this gathering). We have to be mindful these type of outlets (proposed for 19/9) are not suitable for large gathering and long sitting.  To be considerate, we will not spend more than 90 minutes in the shop. If longer time is necessary, we can adjourn to the food court upstairs.

Details of the first gathering and sharing are as follows:

Objective: Getting to know each other better through sharing our skills, life experiences, etc.
Place: Within the NEX Mall (Serangoon)
Date: 19-09-2013 (Thursday)
Time: 3PM to 5PM
Menu: Desserts with a cup of coffee/tea cost less than $7.00 or you can just order a drink.
Meeting Place: Serangoon Station (North-East Line) – control room/office.

We will start walking to the cafe at 3.05pm.

Invitation will be sent to the first five confirmed participants.

If this idea of networking is well received, I may consider to have it on a monthly basis, say every 3rd Thursday of each month. Venue can change but the basic awareness of good ambience, reasonable expenditure and healthy food to be the prime consideration. The number of participants possible will depend on the sitting arrangement at the next proposed venue.

Criteria for invitation for the next gathering:

Though invitation is based on first-come first-served, we will hold back the confirmation – on those who have just attended the last month (for the balance 50% number) to allow new members to have a chance to meet new friends – until one week prior to the event date.

Those registered coming:
1) James Tan CL (not coming)
2) Geraldine Ting
3) Susan Chong
4) Barbara Lim
5) Andrew Yeung
6) Noelle Tan
Registration is now closed. Any further request will be put in the waiting list for future gathering (to be announced at a later date).

Should EO enjoy a free ride?

Our intention for the event in question was to pro-rate the cost based on the number of participants. One of us suggested to collect $5.00 from each, why?. The cost was mentioned in the post and 33 pax signed up to attend but what if we don’t achieve this number, who will bear the difference. The EOs are at risk here because no money was collected upfront.
Actual person attended was 29 with 25 pax contributing and 4 abstained. Leftover of $25 was used to defray part of the dinner cost. Was the EOs justified to do that? Let’s us consider other considerations, 2 of us went to recce the place at our own cost and the unsung hero here is Susan who borne the cost of preparing porridge and mee-hoons for about 30 pax which I figure may amount to $25 considering she took a train from Jurong and catch a taxi from Kallang MRT to the venue.

What I can say here is we answer to nobody but for future events we like to invite ideas and opinions.

Not guilty!

Wedding Dinner and The Moral of giving….

In less than 2 weeks, the wedding dinners will be in vogue during the lunar eighth month. I myself, received an invitation.

This bring to mind, a recent viral condemnation of a bride who chastised her friend through social media, after receiving $50 each from her and partner as wedding ang pow. In the message, the bride even listed down the cost of the dinner, reception & cocktails, that worked out to $200 per head. As a result she and husband were very much short on paying off the reception.

With above in mind, I’m wondering …….
a) Do wedding couples have great expectations that guests must give enough to cover cost of their wedding banquet? (even if wedding couples choose to be extravagant and throw high end dinner?)
b) Is it obligatory for invited guests to give enough to cover for wedding couple’s banquet?
c) Is it not acceptable for invited guests to give whatever they are comfortable with. (Case in point – If one only earns $1000/mth or unemployed, is he or she expected to give $200 ? What if there’s more than one invitation during the wedding season, that person will be in financial difficulty for that month.
d) Is it not totally rude and unbecoming of newly weds to demand and confront your friends for giving too little ?

Let’s hear from one and all your takes on this .

Cheers,
Constance

Phobias

When I read definitions of Phobia:

A phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. These fears can interfere with an individual’s life and lead to considerable anxiety and stress …”

A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not …”

I was, like, hey, sounds like most SHC members……….fear of writing/chatting.  Kekekekeeee.

Seriously, darlings, we are in this club not just to attend activities/gatherings etc, we are also here to make frens and to know others, let us hear your thoughts, views, experience etc.

So, tell us your phobias.  I shall start with mine.

I was totally, totally petrified of cats when I was young but thank goodness I have overcome it.  To cut a long story short, I sat ten feet away from a fren’s cat and the cat seemed to know I was scared of her and she approached me very slowly while my heart was pounding to death.  Finally she climbed on my lap, again extra slowly, laid down and fell asleep.

I thought I would die but surprisingly, my panic gradually subsided and I even stroked her!  From then on, my fear of cats slowly disappeared; thanks to this sweet, adorable cat.

Your turn.

Why don’t husbands send flowers or even remember their wives’ b-days?

Darlings

I have heard this a gazillion times and each time it makes me wonder, too, cos my ex always remembers and I must say, those were the moments I cherish till today; not just the flowers, gifts and a nice dinner, but the thought behind it to make my b-days memorable.

This topic is not just for husbands/boy frens/partners to ‘come clean’ kekekekee and tell us why but it’s also for wives/girlfrens/partners to share with us how they feel.  Some may not think the b-day is such a big deal so what’s the fuss?  Others may feel…………..

Share, darlings.

Do the Elderly/Seniors take things for granted?

We often hear of abuse, neglect and abandonment of the elderly.  It’s heart-wrenching when we come across such cases.

Recently I had a chat with a friend who feels that the elderly/seniors do take things for granted because the society is ‘over protecting’ them.  I went, ‘Hmmmm, interesting.’

So, have you been taken for granted by the elderly/seniors or know of such a situation?

Discussion time.

Games interests group

Hi All
The Gombak badminton group meets regularly at Bukit Gombak Indoor stadium on Thursdays from 10.00am to 12.00noon.
At Clementi Sports Complex – lead by Linda – there is table tennis
(Hi Linda, can you fill in the days and times for the activity?? Thanks)
In the East, Frisna also has a group on Tuesdays ( is it by invitation only??)
Are there any other activities and games in other parts of Singapore on a regular basis?
Can we can collate a time-table of the day/time/activity/location so that SHC members who need to get their joints/muscles moving know where to go?
Or kopi kakis for companionship when bored?
Is such a “time-table” schedule a workable idea?

come join me in Yangon this Nov 6-10 or 12

Today Sun is probably one of my 15 trips this year to Yangon, the commercial city and former seat of the Myanmese government. I was so tired after a late night on Friday, enjoying the drinks and food, and celebrating Singapore Nation Day at the famous Sedona Hotel. It was kind of nostalgic celebrating our ND, with the dignitaries and ambassors in a foreign country, and listening to Majullah Singapore. And today, I spent the entire Saturday with a friend, enjoying the food delights of Yangon Chinatown. I had a rich tasty bowl of minced duck porridge, a big peech, a durian which is different from that of Thailand, a grilled fish, perfect in everyway, two solid meat bakchangs and two ang gu kuays.

goldenrock

Reflecting on the last two days, I sensed for many of us, the scenes, the food, the people and the old ways, would bring back memories 35-40 years ago.

There are many Singaporeans who have set up home in Myanmar. There is a Singapore Club called SAM, and there is a Singapore kitchen for anyone who is homesick. It’s the home of Singaporeans. Many speak Myanmese, as fluent as I speak Thai.

It daunts on me that Myanmar is the last country to open itself up to the world. Other than N Korea, Myanmar is the place to explore now. Myanmese love Singapore and Singaporeans. Because there are hotels built by Singaporeans, there are Singapore banks and there areSingapore investments. Singapore offers education to Myanmese and many work and study in Singapore.

See how the gals apply a natural powder on their faces, tightening their skins and how pleasant they are. The guys are handsome, if that’s what you are looking at.

A bowl of streetside noodles would cost 50 cts to 1 SGD. Enjoy the taxi without aircon, and for an extra USD1, you get the aircon turned on.   Many famous temples all over the country. If meditation is your like, Myanmar is the place. Off design jade at USD1 per piece.

There are two ways to get to Yangon. Direct from Spore on Jetstar, or from the old Bangkok airport Donmuang. Booked the right time, the air tickets are a great price for now.

Obviously, being an old city, it has cockcroaches, big ones too. No super highways like the KPE, it’s still a very nice old place. Yangon is growing, and before long, it will be like HCMC.

Take this opportunity to see Myanmar The markets are plentiful, plenty of Jade, no need to worry about fake jade.  The girls no longer wears jeans. They wear skirts, just like every young lady in Singapore.  Come speak Mandarin and Teochew.

I plan to go in Sept, but the more suitable date is in Nov. Weather is cool and dryer, so you can bring a jacket. I have also found a 4 star hotel, with a live band, where you can dance the whole night.

So, if you like to join me, please let me know. We will find a way to organise ourselves.

This walk will be broken down into several stages, totaling about 13.5 km. Those who don’t want to do the whole walk can join/leave the walk at the various way points. Times given are approximate depending on the pace of the group.

Start point – East Coat Park, 10 am.

Way point 1 – Break at Block 739 Bedok Reservoir Road (next to Sheng Siong Supermarket). 12 noon to 1 pm. This will be the lunch point.

Way point 2 – Break at Tampines MRT/Town Centre, 2.30 pm.

End point – End at Pasir Ris Park, 4 pm.

The end point is at Pasir Ris Park in time for happy hour ( 2 for 1) at one of the beach bars. There isn’t much else by way of food or drinks at the park and those who are not inclined for an afternoon tipple, should stock up at the last way point (Tampines MRT/Town Centre).

What i like to see happening at the Club?

We may have voice this before but I feel it time to hear it again and better still if someone take the initiatives.

A matter close to my heart is to start a Mandarin speaking session for those wanting to improve their Mandarin conversation with one another.

The other idea is to start a Book Club for those avid readers who want to share their passion for reading and to encourage one another with setting goal to read more books.

As with any concern, just to put up a post can be life threatening. We worry for the responses, we worry how is the reaction and we just worry worry.

Give your encouragement here and if there is enough show of hands I will buck up and do something.

Silver Infocomm Day 2013 (aks SID) from 21 to 29 Sep 2013

Chinese Ad

English Ad

This is not an advertisement for another organisation but merely information for those who are keen to continue learning Infocomm Technology (IT) subjects. Each year, IDA will hold SID in the 3rd or 4th quarter of the year. People who are aged 50 and above are their targets. During this period, IT subjects relevant to today’s living are conducted at various centres like Polythenic and ITE. Subjects on various topics are offered at very cheap rates of $10 per session of 3 hrs (hope I remember correctly). Besides these offered subjects, participants can also participate in seminar and talks to enhance learning and get to know IT matters better.

Time to gather ourselves at Life Matters this Sat and Sun 27 and 28 Jul

I attached the table of members who have volunteered to take care of the booth (Booth-in-charge) and co Booth-in-charge).  Members doing meet the public sessions with or without presentations are also listed.

Helpers (with definite times) are also listed.  Do register here to help.  If I miss out some info, please let me know.  thank you.
