Monthly cum Pre ‘Chong-Chew-Jie’ Gathering – 17 Sept’09

Hello SHCians,

For the month of September gathering, we have the honour to host it at Gillman Heights upon the kind gesture of Jacqueline Han, who make it possible by arranging the necessary logistics.  emoticon

This Gillman Heights Condo although aging in appearance (and severely need a coat of fresh paint) has wide open space with lots of matured trees and greenery. Other plus points are the "olympic length" swimming pool, and large wading pool. Also a good-size playround surrounded by greenery.  For those want to have a swim before gathering, they are most welcome to do so.  Ample parking spaces for car owners.  Though not near to any MRT but easily accessible by bus.

Info for Gillman Heights location, and public transport:
Buses to Alexandra Road: 51,  93, 97, 100, 166, 197.
Buses to Depot Road: 57, 175, 195

Jacq had even offered to provide free flow of her famous (self-proclaimed) pandan tea. It is a refreshing iced drink, freshly brewed from pandan leave and tea with sugar added. Pandan leave contains anti-oxidants, and is highly recommended to counter the effects of heatiness caused by fried stuff and spicy food. emoticon

Another factor being that come November 2009, Gillman Heights, as it is, will no longer exist. Yep, it is to be torn down, and redeveloped into something else.  So come to have look before it gone lor…emoticon

We never before had a monthly gathering at Condo’s function room but decided to give this a try, hence fellow SHCians come and support this gathering

We can have a Pre ‘Chong-Chew Jie’ celebration and I will sponsor two boxes of mooncakes to get these going but only 1 or 2 yolks kind 1 hor…  emoticon  And Terence is going to bring along another 2 boxes of mooncakes all way from Taiwan hor…

Function room is big enough host at least 60-80paxs and we can hv some light music accompany us thru’ the nite.  To make the gathering more interesting, Terence will bring along the wireless mic with amplifier set.  Anyone considering bringing along a portable DVD lar so that we can some singing emoticon

For this gathering, as we are thinking of getting mini buffet (ard $7) hence, registration is a must for better planning for food, so come and register early…

So much of lee lee lo lo, the September monthly gathering is confirmed to be scheduled as follows:

  • Date : 17 September 2009, Thursday
  • Time : 5.00pm to 9.30pm
  • Venue : Gillman Heights Condo (Function Room B), at the junction of Depot/Alexandra Road.

The Flea Mart is back cum the Monthly Gathering-October 31, 2009

Dear folks,

When we decided on the Flea Mart, i kaypo want to include the Games Day and include Mahjong competition but it just didn’t tickle your bones! Then we got the idea how about having a Carnival Day and having a jam session, again we have lukewarm response. Mati lah how to go ahead we have fixed cost to worry about! The caterer insists on one hundred pax for us to enjoy a good rate, now I ‘gabra’, cannot sleep and started counting sheep, still no help!

Next day I got a bright idea, how about Flea Mart and Monthly Gathering? No need to worry about food catering, we got Ya Kun to the rescue!

So die die this event is on and I apologised to fellow members and those who booked a booth I gave up too easily. I wanted to run and hide and go into hibernation, but have nowhere to hide! Now you all know why the EO always want to bang his head on the wall!

So, dear folks mark this day on your calendar and come give us your support!

Sept Monthly Investment Meeting

Hi gals and guys,

I thought a new post will help grab your attention.

We got lucky and have managed to booked the Presentation Room at Phillip City Tower Level 6 (same place lah) from 1.30 to 4.30pm on Sat, 5 Sep 2009.

We shall have our next meeting then and there are some feedback the last meeting that I would like to address in the agenda.

1. Online Trading has been well requested and learning this skill will be an important step to manage your money and trade better. I will conduct a 30-min training session using live POEMS, I will see if we can have access to the terminals there for some hands-on during a short break. Those who wants to open POEMS account (free) beforehand, plse email me separately (foost@phillip.com.sg).

2. Stock Picks & Fundamentals – I shall talk about this in more details. We can also share and identify some attractive small & mid cap stocks and get organised to do some research on them as a team (investor club).

3. Review the stock market (STI) and anticipate potential upcoming correction levels.

4. Analyse the stocks you want to know more about. From feedback, some listen to “tips” and buy without knowledge; some got burnt badly before, are stuck with loads of shares and don’t know how to move on to take advantage of the opportunities that are opening up now.

5. Re-visit money management, timing market entry & exits and stop loss (auto with POEMS ProTrader).

6. Initiate discussion on Investor Club. Suggestion to call it SHC Top & Bottom Club (like sell top and buy bottom as motto)?

7. There will be a 30min break for socialising and chatting as we now have 3 hours. I know the last time was rush rush.

I have been asked if I can handle the buying and selling shares as a Phillip Security Consultant. Yes, contactually I am a Remisier with Phillip but have the flexibility of operating a mobile office as a consultant. Yes, I can open your trading account with online POEMS free of charge (even if you already have one) and yes, I can meet you anytime and place to do it. And yes, I will answer your questions, meet you, advise on shares and guide you to trade online to save on brokerage fees (0.28% vs 0.5/0.4%) if you so desire (especially for SHCians, to help you save money).

Lastly, any further feedback for the agenda are welcome. I know few have asked for coffees and soft drinks the last time. There is a great coffee shop at City Link about 50M from the City Hall MRT entrance and good local coffee O only 90cents. Maybe can buy during break (we will have a break this time, note the time is longer).

Same thing as usual, plse leave you name behind if you are coming so that we know how many will be there.

Thanks for your kind co-operation and looking forward to “siow liao lah” positive energy greeting again.

Investment Update Aug 09

Dear all, I thought it might be more convenient to start a new post, troblesome to "scrull" around for some or maybe not at all emoticon

Thanks to the 43 or so SHCians who overwhemingly support the last Sat talk and meeting. It was a lively meeting and I am sure all have enjoyed it. We ran out of time and had to rush through at the end and ommitted the discussion on inevestor club. Also due to time, regretfully only half duly complete the feedback form.

It is encouranging to have positive feedback from Kenneth and LH Jie in their respective earlier postings; and also supportive comments from Terence and Tim. Thanks guys!

As suggested by Kenneth, a short summary for those who have not attended is duely.

The theme: Stock Market: Preparedness to meet Opportunity = Managed Luck and topics included

1. Positive Energy Attracts Opportunity

>> Happiness is the source of goodwill and positive energy. We are only as happy as those around us. By way of introduction, we tell one another how "good" we were feeling to the tune of James Brown’s song with same tiltle. High "5"s all around for re-inforcement. So now we can get lucky.

2. ST Index: 1998 to 2009 – Technical Analysis & Opportunities

>> We looked at the last boom and bust cycle and identified support lines and retracement patterns. From technical analysis, we have looked at possible retracement level around STI 2700-2750 points, following Fibonacchi’s retracement method and identifying strong resistenace turned support level. Next, we looked at possbile correction levels at 2420, 2244, 2112 & 1936 that we need to watch out for as prossible Fibonacchi’s turning points (buying 4D also suggested).

3. Investment Planning

>> We covered Basic Technical Analysis using Fibonacchi’s retracement; trend, resistance and support lines, top & bottom turning-point indicators, and divergence indicators to help us identify an opportunity when it arises and to prepare for entering or exiting a position (WHEN TO BUY). We then see how to enter a trade looking for candles confirmation and breaching of resistance lines; and how to exit with confirmation of breaching of support lines (HOW TO BUY). And of cource, a STOP loss plan (HOW TO CUT LOSS).

>> We tackled the question of "I only want to buy at $1 and then sell at $1.20 to make 20 cents, why should I be bothered with all these technical analysis?" with topic on Trading Psychology and see how FEAR, GREED, HOPE and EGO go trading shares. The picture becomes obvious that we need to cleard away all our emotion when investing or trading and follow the rules. If you don’t know the rules, go learn or rely on somebody in cahoot who knows the rule.

>> Next up, Fundamental Analsysis and Stock Pick which dealt with boring facts and figures about companies – price pattern and volatility, see the future and look at the past of the company, news and institution buyers. In USA, this is largely automated with a scoring system and available for subcription on the web. We are still backward, can this be a opportunity for SHC to develop and offer such services for Sgp and Asean market?Investor club members can share such info and save time (WHAT TO BUY).

>> Money & Risk Management – we talked about float and max 2% risk per trade (HOW MUCH TO INVEST). Allocation plan is such that the no. of successive losses is less than the 2% max risk. The idea is trade to survive (loose less money) rather than how much I want to make. Determine risk appetite, return, time frame, which instruments and apply risk managenet. We examine different investment scenerios as different types of risk management.

>> The emphasis on Online Trading and the basic skills needed to get started. I can start a class with POEMS and it is free to open a Phillip account (I will be happy to help) that comes with free access to the online POEMS. There is no rule to restrict you to only one trading account. You can have as many as you want and all free. Feedback needed if you want to attend. Commission is lower for online trading, so better learn.

4. Admin & Trading Rules

>> The do & don’ts in trading, the credit limit and what does it mean, the settlement date and forced selling, the wrong keying in of orders online and how to appeal, the opening of trading account and the service level of your remisier/ dealer. You can open as many Phillip accounts as you want and trade with the remisier who gives you the best service in making and protecting your money.

5. Investor Club – no time to discuss, postphone to next time. Feedback here is welcomed. For starter, I am suggesting we meet socially once a month and see how it goes.

Lastly, the feedback form is great for us to plan our talks better in future and to reach out to specific requests from the group. I have only received 19 on Sat and I would like to request those who have not done so to send an email to me foost@phillip.com.sg or sms XXXXXXX your email address so that I can forward you the soft copy for you to fill in and return via email. Or just drop you email address here in the post if your are too busy.

Please feel free to comment, ask or suggest. However, do give me some days if any lengthy respond is expected. And just call me if it is about the stock market price movements, it is time to watch for buying opportunities as most blue chips have started to pullback already. Crucial news from USA this Friday includes CPI, capacity untilization, industrial production and consumer sentiments.

Will keep you post on the next talk… cheers, ben

This Saturday’s Investment Talk cum Meeting

Dear all who have registered (in total 51 SHCians),

Plse be reminded the talk cum meeting is this Sat 080809 (auspicious day, double ‘fatt’) from 2.00 to 4.00PM at Raffles City Tower level 6 Phillip Presentation Room.

The STI index has briefly touched 2,700 points this mroning and retracted. The 2700 point is the very strong support turned resistance level. It is also the 50% retracement between the Oct07 high  at 3907 and Mar09 1455 low, in line with Fibonacchi’s retracement projection. So, are we due for a correction? If so, how much will the STI pullback? Is this my second chance accumulate at reduced risk? If I have shares now (CPF or others), should I be selling now?

Well, to add some spice to this Sat’s talk, I shall include a Technical Analysis of the STI (from the past to now what’s next?), looking at possible retracement and support levels in the coming months.

So, don’t miss the Sat’s event. The theme is Stock Market: Preparedness (when meeting Opportunity = Managed Luck).  Plse refer July 12 Post for topics and details.

Cheers, Ben

Life saving article on Stroke

To all fellow SHC members

Hope this article will prove effective in real times of emergency, especially to those members who have elderly parents / relative staying with them.  I think it would be useful too that we should pass on this info to our children for their knowledge.

"From a Chinese Professor .
Keep a syringe or needle in your home to do this… It’s amazing and an unconventional way of recovering from stroke, read it through it can help somebody one day.

This is amazing. Please keep this very handy. Excellent tips.
Do take a minute to read this. You’ll never know, ones life may depend on you.

My father was paralysed and later died from the result of a stroke.  I wish I knew about this first aid before.

When stroke strikes, the capillaries in the brain will gradually burst.
When a stroke occurs, stay calm.

No matter where the victim is, do not move him/her. Because, if moved, the capillaries will burst.

Help the victim to sit up where he/she is to prevent him/her from falling over again and then the blood letting can begin.

If you have in your home an injection syringe that would be the best.

Otherwise, a sewing needle or a straight pin will do.

1.    Place the needle/pin over fire to sterilize it and then use it to prick the tip of all ……10 fingers.
2.    There are no specific acupuncture points, just prick about an mm from the fingernail.
3.    Prick till blood comes out.
4.    If blood does not start to drip, then squeeze with your fingers.
5.    When all 10 digits is bleeding, wait a few minutes then the victim will regain consciousness.

6.    If the victim’s mouth is crooked, then pull on his ears until they are red.

7.    Then prick each earlobe twice until two drops of blood comes from each earlobe.

After a few minutes the victim should regain consciousness.

Wait till the victim regains his normal state without any abnormal symptoms then take him to the hospital.    Otherwise, if he was taken in the ambulance in a hurry to the hospital, the bumpy trip will cause all the capillaries in his brain to burst.

If he could save his life, barely managing to walk, then it is by the grace of his ancestors.
‘I learned about letting blood to save life from Chinese traditional doctor who lives in Sun Juke.

Furthermore, I had practical experience with it. Therefore, I can say this method is 100% effective.

In 1979, I was teaching in Fung Gaap Collegein Tai Chung.

One afternoon, I was teaching a class when another teacher came running to my classroom and said in panting,
‘come quick, our supervisor has had a stroke!’. I immediately went to the 3rd floor.
When I saw our supervisor, his colour was off, his speech was slurred , his mouth was crooked – all the symptoms of a stroke.

I immediately asked one of the practicum students to go to the pharmacy outside the school to buy a syringe,  which I used to prick his 10 fingers tips.

When all 10 fingers were bleeding (each with a pea-sized drop of blood),after a few minutes, his  face  regained its colour and his eyes’ spirit returned,

But his mouth was still crooked. So I pulled on his ears to fill them with blood.
When his ears became red ,
I pricked his right earlobe twice to let out two drops of blood .
When both earlobes had two drops of blood each , a miracle happened.

Within 3-5 minutes the shape of his mouth returned to normal and his speech became clear.

We let him rest for a while and have a cup of hot tea , then we helped him go down the stairs, drove him to Wei Wah Hospital . He rested one night and was released the next day to return to school to teach.. Everything worked normally.
There were no ill after effects.
On the other hand, the usual stroke victim usually suffers Irreparable bursting of the brain capillaries on the way to the hospital. As a result, these victims never recover.’ Therefore, stroke is the second cause of death. The lucky ones will stay alive but can remain paralysed for life.

It is such a horrible thing to happen in ones life.

If we can all remember this blood letting method and start the life saving process immediately, in a short time, the victim will be revived and regain 100% normality. "

Hello Everyone!

I’m an ‘old’ new member – signed up several years back but was not active but am more free now so hope to be able to get to know you over the next few months. For a start, I’m on the upcoming trip to Padang.

I’m in-between jobs, just finished a stint at an international school which is now on its summer break. I’m an avid reader, currently it’s Philosophy. I enjoy yoga stretches and bends so I don’t freeze up and swim whenever I get near a pool.

Sleep

Dear All

Came across this article and thought I would start a new thread to share.

7 Surprising Facts About Sleep

Must-know info to help you get your zzz’s

Can’t sleep? You have plenty of company. About half of all adults experience insomnia on occasion, and 1 in 10 battle insomnia on a regular basis, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If you fall into one of those groups, chances are you’re already following the tried-and-true rules for a good night’s sleep: Don’t have too much caffeine (especially late in the day), don’t exercise late at night, keep your bedroom at a cool, comfortable temperature, and make sure your bed, pillows and linens are comfy. Those are all good tips, but there are lesser-known things you can try to help you get more rest.

1. Set a Bedtime Alert
Most of us already use an alarm to wake up in the morning, but sleep expert Mxxx Bxxx, PhD, suggests setting it at night as well. "I tell people to set their alarm for one hour before bedtime, which reminds them to begin what I call the power-down hour," says Dr. Bxxx.  He says you should spend the first 20 minutes of that hour taking care of any necessary chores (like walking the dog or making your kids’ lunches), then spend the next 20 minutes on hygiene (washing up, brushing your teeth, etc.), and save the last 20 minutes before bed for relaxation. You don’t necessarily have to meditate, if that doesn’t appeal to you; you can also do deep breathing exercises, read a book or even watch a little TV (as long as it’s not too stimulating).

2. Don’t Clear Your Mind
Experts say anxiety and depression top the list of reasons people have trouble sleeping. Part of the problem is that many of us just can’t seem to quiet that internal voice that starts rambling on about the worries of the day. Of course, if you can clear your mind, go ahead and do it. But if that’s impossible, don’t force it–you’ll only end up panicking about the fact that you’re not sleeping, says Pxxx Mxxx, PhD.  Instead, try slowing down your thoughts. "Practice saying anything and everything that comes into your mind to yourself in a slow, monotonous, drowsy tone," says Dr. Mxxx. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about what to buy tomorrow at the grocery store or how a big presentation at work is going to go. If you slow everything down and talk to yourself in an even tone, you’ll find it’s that much harder to keep worrying (or stay awake).

3. Count Numbers–Not Sheep
Another great way to quiet those racing thoughts is to count backward from 300 by 3s, says Dr. Bxxx. Unless you’re a math ace, you probably won’t be able to focus on anything else while you’re doing this, which means you’ll end up distracting yourself from your stressful thoughts.

4. Get Up a Half-Hour Earlier
Yes, you read that right! If you’re suffering from chronic insomnia, try getting up, for example, at 6:30 instead of your usual 7 wakeup time–no matter what time you fell asleep the night before. You may be extra-sleepy for a little while, but this is hands-down the most effective way to reset your body clock, says Dr. Mxxx. It works because it teaches your body that it can’t catch up on sleep in the morning, so eventually you’ll start feeling drowsier earlier in the evening.

5. Consider Seeing a Professional
A sleep psychologist is someone who specializes in gathering info about your emotions and your behaviors specifically as they relate to sleep. Often found at sleep centers, a sleep psychologist can usually help resolve your sleep issues in just four to six sessions, says Jxxx Oxxx, MD, a spokesman for the National Sleep Foundation.

6. Don’t Worry If You Can’t Sleep Right Away
You shouldn’t pass out the second your head hits the pillow. If that happens all the time, it’s a sign that you’re sleep deprived. (Ditto for nodding off during boring meetings and long movies.) Ideally, it should take 15 to 25 minutes from when you lie down to when you drift off to sleep, says Dr. Bxxx.

7. Go to Bed When You’re Tired
If you’re having ongoing sleep troubles, don’t worry so much about the fact that it’s almost midnight and you have to get up in less than seven hours. Forcing yourself to stay in bed when you’re not sleepy is just going to contribute to more tossing and turning, says Dr. Oxxx.  Instead, get up, do something relaxing, and go back to bed whenever you do feel tired. You might end up exhausted the next day (but that was bound to happen either way under these circumstances), and the following night you should have better luck getting to bed earlier.

Hope the above helps and look forward to hearing from members – cures etc.

Lower Back Pain

After the two posts on diabetes and gout, I thought I’d start one that I believe is a very common occurrence amongst older people, Lower Back Pain.

Several years ago,I was unfortunate to have a fall down a flight of steps, landing heavily on my behind. At that point in time, I didn’t think much of it as I only had some bruises, so didn’t get it checked by a doctor. After several months, I started experiencing aching pains in my lower back. Then and only then did I go and see a doctor, who thought I had an impinged nerve, probably a result of the formation of bone spurs, after the fall, which were pressing on the nerve.

Well, I have been living with it, with the help of creams and gels, physiotherapy and exercises and at times pain medication.

I have come across many claims on the internet that there are certain exercise regimes that can do away completely with the pain. How true are they? Does anyone know anything about such exercises? I would love to learn them.

Please share with us any tips on back pains, be it massages, exercises or any kind of ‘holistic’ medications.

Sharing Stock and Investment Market Info and Happenings

Dear SHCians,

The STI Index has moved up more than 40% since Mar 09. Most economists believe the worst is behind us, but nobody knows how fast and how soon our economy will recover. However, we know the stock markets move much faster and earlier than the actual economy.

For those with interest, it is wise to get prepared so that you do not miss the next rally and bull run in the stock market. There are also new instruments such as Exchange Trade Funds (EFTs) and Extended Settlement (ES) contracts much like stock option in the stock market today.

Drop me an email foost@phillip.com.sg to receive stock info and invitations to selective investment talks and events. If the response is good, we can consider starting our own Investor Club to help educate our members and share knowledge and experiences so that we can be better traders and investors.
