Origami, anyone?

A few days ago, I made a comment in ID 1399 (Art of Making Fans) in response to Terence’s call for people with some skills they can share to step forward (something like that). I thought I should start a separate thread on the subject, as I seem to have gatecrashed (with apologies) into June Chin’s thread.

Basically, I have been involved in origami for many years, and would be able to conduct classes for SHCians if there is sufficient interest. However, I will only be in a position to start the classes at a later, yet undetermined date. So this is just a feeler, to gauge whether there is sufficient interest.

The history of origami – the art of paperfolding – is cloudy at best, but is believed to have originated in China with the invention of paper in or about 600BC (recent studies suggest that it could be much earlier). It is believed to have been introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks where it became part of Japanese ceremonies and culture. And where it got its name. For many years, the development of origami did not go beyond a few simple models that most of us are familar with. This changed after the Second World War, with the pioneering work of origami enthusiasts like Akira Yoshizawa, Robert Harbin, etc . Soon, origami gained popularity in the west, with origami societies sprouting first in the UK and USA, then much of Europe and parts of South America.

Since those early years, the development of origami has been nothing short of phenomenal. There are origami societies in almost every corner of the world today, many holding annual conventions and exhibitions that attract wide international participation. Amongst the ranks of origami enthusiasts today are numerous mathematicians, engineers, scientists, IT professionals, etc., who apply their professional training and skills to the further development of origami.

Today, origami is being exhibited in established art museums, gaining recognition as an art form in its own right. Origami is also used as a tool in education, physical and mental therapy, R & D, rehabilitation, and to bridge cultural, language and religious differences.

Origami is also an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family, bonding grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren. And the family maid, bringing everyone together irrespective of differences in skill levels or subject preferences.

It allows individuals to challenge and express themselves intellectually and artistically, and perhaps attain a degree of self-actualization. More importantly, it is loads of fun.

Origami, anyone? :o)

I hope the experiences picked up from these workshops will harness your IT skills. If they are insufficient, pls do come back for more. On the choice of centre n location selection, we are in negotiation with an external organisation in a central location fully equipped with equipment n w/o restriction in loading software that we need to use on the PCs. We await to hear the good news.

What we had done –

1) Buying n selling stuff online, 2) Internet banking, 3) Online chat & 4) Emailing Enhanced

Out of the 4 workshops, #2 was the most successful with 95% out of 100% attempted and subscribed to Internet Banking. They were also 1st timers.

I also wish to extend my thanks to members who had volunteered their time to assist at the workshops. They were Chan Kwong Wah, Ronald Lee, Edward Lim, Christina Chan CL & Jade Phua.

We may re-run the 4 workshops n some others at later dates. Other workshops like photo editing, downloading images n videos, selling on Ebay, uploading photos to n managing online photo albums, burning images n videos onto media, creating your own webpage n latest craze, blogging.

We welcome all suggestions. In the event we do take time to run those courses it’s likely that we cant find volunteer trainers. Pls excuse us. If you are able n available to run any course pls come n join us.

Until you hear from us again, a big thank you to all you once again.

Reading Circle

Hi Good people,

For the life of me I couldn’t find the earler Reading Circle postings/comments, except for the latest by Ron Wie. The last thing I want to do in a discussion of books, is to be listed under ‘Fart Facts’…..interesting tho’ it may be.

ELibrary costs and is tedious. Nothing like putting up your feet, relax in an armchair or better yet be in bed  with, a good book. The libraries in S’pore are good sources and free.

RonW if you are looking for a good classic book that pertains to our forefathers culture, hardships in China….then " The Good Earth " by Pearl S. Buck is a very good start. Very well and interestingly written. Its about a farming family and  gives an insight of life and attitudes in China. It is no wonder why our ancestors left the Orient shores and sailed the 7 seas to look for a better life. So here we are alien, to our own kin in China.

If its possible watch the {black & white} movie. Over the years I have read the book twice and the movie 3 times….I don’t seem to tire of them. They are classics.

It sure beats reading a foreign Russian setting like " War & Peace " with its very long winded names that you cannot identify with after a while.

Hope this is informative and encouraging. Anyone, with further input or books to recommend???? Do share………………..Happy reading…………Jie

Trivia Thread

It is oft said that forgetfulness is the first sign of ageing. We cannot stop the process but, perhaps, we can try to slow it. So, after much egging here is a thread to test our mamm – oops, not again (another sign of ageing) – test out memories or otherwise gain that knowledge our parents and teachers told us were unimportant and wouldn’t get us anywhere. Now is a time to find out how sweet that forbidden fruit is and have a good giggle at how little we know because we had allowed the good life to pass us by.

So move that cursor over your hippocampus (the hard disk in your brain, for the technology savvy), click out those trivia questions and put out the challenge: “So, you didn’t know this did you … smart-a***?”

Okay, so you take pride in not wasting your youth with trivia. Well, show us that you are indeed a real smart-a*** and answer the questions posed here!

Please also  participate even if you are genuinely seeking answers.  Example, a tune keeps going through your head and you are dying to know the title of the song. You may want to ask the title for the song with the lyrics:

"Stepped into a church I passed along the way/I get down on my knees and I pretend to pray"

Also, you may not want to ask the question, but just want to share some trivia information like:

Cat Stevens, who had a big hit with "Morning Has Broken", has embraced Islam and now goes by the name Yusuf Islam.

But do keep questions as trivial as possible – we’ve all got this far in life because we’ve passed the “other” intelligence tests already. And for starters, we’ll stick with trivia pertaining to music and films.

So, ready … set … let the fun begin!

Reading Circle

I enjoy reading and am keen to ‘swop’ books or exchange recommendations on books. If you are an avid reader, we could do that or even get together and talk about any book that we have read. At the moment, my interests are more on biographies, autobiographies and real life personal experiences although I read all sorts.

I have just finished "A Round-Heeled Woman"  and "Unaccompanied Women" , both by Jane Jushka. They are very good reads and surprisingly, were recommended by a man. Another good book is "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell, which I have yet to finish.

Come and join me and chat about our books :-)

TEA TALK

Do you know your tea?

In the western world, generally speaking, the folks know their wine. In the east, we should know our tea. This is especially so among the early Chinese scholars and the elite, they really know their tea. How about you, do you want to know?

There are six types of teas consumed by the Chinese :

Green unfermented green leaves that produce a pale and slightly astrigent infusion.

Red fermented, producing a strong infusion but much less popular than green tea.

Black fermented black leaves that produce a reddish infusion with a strong flavour.

Oolong semi-fermented with flavour of green tea and the strength of red.

Brick mixed teas pressed into a block and popular with Russians,Tibetans and nomadic tribes in the north of China

Flower scented good quality green tea mixed with dried fragrant flowers, such as jasmine, rose and chrysanthemum.

In a traditional tea house, “Yum Cha” is not just about having your “char siew pau” and tea. In real terms it is having tea in the traditional Chinese way. A number of factors are involved in making a good cup of Chinese tea. The blend, freshness, quality of the leaf, hardness and the temperature of the water comes into play. The initial temperature of the little tea pot, time permitted for the infusion etc. A good cup of tea should not have milk or sugar added to it. It is almost as taboo as putting ice cubes into your mug of beer!

I would like to organise a talk in a tea house if there is enough SHC members who are interested. May I have your response, please.?

Reading keeps us uptodate. Books to share and exchange

All of us have books at home.  We have read them, and they are nicely left on the shelf.  It would be nice if we can borrow some of these books; equally nice, if we can lend others these books.

Books helps us to stay alive.  It refreshes the minds.

All SilverHairsClub members meet regularly, at monthly gatherings, walks, cycling, chats or parties.  We can exchange these books.  Remember to return though.  If you have a book that you like to lend someone, share the name of your book here.

Lending and borrowing books are also excellent ways to get to know one another better.

I could hve danced all nite-Part 2

Hi Terence think I should hve a "closure" to my posting…"I could hve danced all nite". appreciate it pls, if you cld post the following for me, thanks much… I refer to my posting in Apr.."I could hve danced all nite". Wow, the posting attracted quite a lot of comments. It also prompted several members to form small groups to go clubbing before the intended date 15 Jun :-))). They are the Nike people…just do it people!!! I joined one of the groups on the eve of Vesak, to Zouk. Suaku me did not know tht the action only begins at 11pm!! Anyway, it was exciting after having not gone for 3 decades!!! . By the way, the scene has not changed much…the drinks esp the non-alcholic ones were the same, the lightings etc. One thing was different though. That nite, I noted there were more young guys than young girls!!! During my time in the 70’s, there were more young girls than young guys :-((( Must be more female post war babies :-))) Anyway, after having gone to Zuok, I hve to accept the fact that I couldn’t dance all nite after all…no energy :-))) Since I hve gone and many members hve gone clubbing after my posting, I would like to close my posting for 15 Jun.

HOWEVER, if there are some members out there who are waiting patiently and looking forward to the 15 Jun nite out, then pls let me know so that I can arrange the outing to St James.

REPORT on Clubbing – 30 May

Dear Fellow Clubbers

I’m glad we had fun last night.  Thanks to the 3 guys who came along to chaperon us ladies.  Thanks to Ronald Lee for the supper followed by long chit chat.  But most of all, thanks to all those who’ve made this event possible.

The venue : Zouk  (No. 17 Jiak Kim Street)  next to Grand Copthorne Hotel

Being eve of public holiday, everyone of us paid $12/- for 2 drinks and multiple entries to both Phuture and Zouk.  (Velvet was closed for private event.)

We decided to stay on at Zouk for the music and the atmosphere.  The real dancing only kicked in at 11pm and the dance floor gets more crowded by the minutes.  We really had a good work out on the dance floor for 3 hours.  Also, it was fun watching the young people miming the lyrics on staggered platforms like some kind of a show.  And it was contagious too.!  I found myself and June mimicking these youngsters.  We finally called it a night after 2am.

Used PCs for SHC members Project

This is one of my favourite past times. I have been doing this since late 90’s on both personal and corporate basis.

I had personally encountered many elders like myself who have been deprived of owning a decent PC (at times even none) or rights to use one. They would also not foot out the money to get for themselves. Many a reason being that they afraid that they might offend or receive severe criticism from their children or friends.

I m just fortunate to have own not only one but three (a lappy and 2 PCs) numbers solely. My other family members have their own.

I believe its high time that I should push for such cause. Together with interested members here, we can help bring our non-IT savvy (dont know) members to the minimum level and not left behind in the digital divide.  Many may still not choose to pursuit but decisions are theirs.

Since all information about what’s happening in SHC is web-based, it would be good if members keep themselves updated by surfing the SHC’s homepage.  Being IT-savvy, it will give you an edge over getting information faster and better than those who are not. On the other hand, people cant take you as "handicapped".

So much for the blah blah blah. Let me take lead in what we can do with your help. We can go on a 2-prone direction by providing 1) hardware (PCs) and 2) software (home guided learning).

The Task –

1. Get members to donate their unwanted PCs.

2  Match and identify members (those who are not doing well or receiving no income and dont own any) who want to own the PCs.

3. Get members who wish or would like to provide home guided learning.

4. Match and identify members who need home guided learning.

5. Get members to form core group to refurbish the donated PCs at donors’ premises or otherwise.

Nothing is called achievement until the time you bring back the life of a machine that has reached its "EOL" (end of life).

Should we do not not to do, your responses are very important.

1st Meeting –
Date : Sat, 14 Apr 07
Venue : McDonald Restaurant at Toa Payoh HDB Hub (just outside bus interchange/above mrt)
Time : 4pm (commence) to 6pm (end)

1) Form the group and delegate tasks
