Pictures of the 17 April 2008 monthly gathering

Dan Huang, our dedicated photographer, has sent in the photos of the April monthly gathering at Hans Cafe.  Thanks to June Chin who was the event organiser.  We had a fun painting session.

A  typical monthly gathering is usually organised over two sessions; an early one for those who have retired and can come as early as 3pm, and a later session starting at 6pm for those SHCians who have to rush here after work.

How about a change in format?  Think whack, think crazy. Do you have another venue where we can host more than 50 – 80 people?  The preference is the venue should cater for the F&B, not expensive and reasonable variety.  The venue should be flexibile with people numbers, and we avoid committing fixed pax.  If we can make noise, great.

Pictures of SHC March gathering & 1st Flea Mart

The photographs of the Flea Mart are out.  Nice blue skies from late Sat afternoon to early evening.  Event Organiser:  LH Jie.  Spot anybody you know?  The Mar 2008 monthly gathering is also held at the same time.

Tell us what you think?  Should we hold the flea mart again?  Once a month, or once a year.  Any suggestions on improving this event.  Good comments or not so good comments, your feedback is important.  Same location, different location.  Same time or different days?

What is classified as a SHC activity?

Frequently, I have been asked if non-SHC members can join our functions.  So, I like to clarify as follows.  For a gathering or activity to be classified as a SHC activity,  it can only be attended by SHC members.

At the same time, I would also encourage SHCians to organise their own gatherings or activities, and still make use of this forum.  However, please do not call or classify the activity or gathering as a SHC activity, if non-SHC members are invited to attend.  You are encouraged to invited other SHC members to attend your activities and particiate in your interests.

I hope this clarifies "What is an SHC activity?".

SHC March monthly gathering – Sat, 15 Mar 2008

Hi all SHCians,

For the first time, we will combine a monthly gathering, with another activity "SHC Flea mart".  Originally, the plan was to hold the monthly gathering at the Han’s cafe and Cake house at Great Eastern Centre.  But, since then, we have now firmed the location of the 1st SHC Flea mart,  at Bali Lane, we shall combine the two events.  The hope is that once a year, we will combine one monthly gathering with the SHC Flea Mart.

We have a 99% chance these two events are ON.  The likely dates are 8, 9 or 15 March, afternoon.  Please note these dates as the announcement will be made very very soon.

This monthly gathering strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Flea Mart buyers will come from members and the public.

Pictures of 17 Jan 2008 SilverHairsClub Gathering

SilverHairsClub Jan event was held at the Hans Cafe on 17 Jan 2008.  The gathering was divided into two groups – one, the retired SilverHairs and second, the still-working SilverHairs.

Do you like the arrangement of the place?  What about the F&B arrangements?  Share with us your ideas and thoughts for the next event.  How should we go about having a topic of discussion here.  Or, should we continue with no agenda?  What about your views of having two groups?

It is very likely we will hold the next gathering at the Hans cafe, on a Saturday afternoon, and have about 200 SHC members attending.  Would you like to raise your hand, and be the next Event Organiser at the Hans Cafe?

Please click here to see the photos, taken by our photographer Dan Huang.

Kong Hei Fatt Choy meet-up in Feb 2008

During this Chinese New Year month, how about having something different?  Dim-sum, raw fish or go easy on Chinese tea?  Name a place, somewhere where the venue wont mind our noise.  We can decide  by Jan 17.  Cheers.

As of 8 Jan 2008, the tentative (99% confirmed) venue for the Chinese New Year event is "Fortunate Restaurant at Toa Payoh (Block 181, Lorong 4, next to the Toa Payoh libary).  We will have a small dim sum menu for lunch, starting at 1100 hrs and finishing at 1400 hrs.  I plan to block 6 tables of 10 each.  The date is Sat, 16 Feb 2008.  More details after Jan 17.

After the lunch, cyclists can proceed to the East Coast for their cycling event at 4pm.  Yew Kwong thinks this arrangement is workable.  Let’s try it out.

Looking for a place to host SHC monthly gatherings

The numbers are growing; and it has become pretty tight with a number of places we currently use for the monthly gathering.  We cannot expand due to limited places.  Do you know of a place with the following specifications.

  1. Something like Hans Cafe at Great Eastern would be excellent.  The venue has F&B, and we don’t have to get involved with serving food, collecting monies and cleaning the tables.
  2. Preferably where the coffee or tea is less than $2.
  3. Plenty of seats, although a minimum of 50 is desired.  SilverHairs need to sit after 10 minutes of standing.
  4. Very flexible with numbers; meaning committment to numbers can be made one week before actual event.
  5. The venue should preferably not be a function room, with boring four walls.  A setting in an auditorium, a cafe, a restaurant (especially off peak times), a food court (off-peak), a swimming pool in a condo ground.

Do you have a place in mind?  But, not to rule out other places, your recommendation most appreciated.

SHC Dinner & Dance – March 2008

We will be having a Dinner & Dance next year 2008.

The committee will be reviewing the venue, F&B, program, cost, etc.  Tentatively, the date has been set for Sat, 22 Mar 2008.  Please put this into your diary.  We can be sure Caroline will give us loads of fun.

Would you like to be a SHC Online meeting moderator?

Some of us may be familiar with webchats.  SilverHairsClub has its own "SHC Online", and it’s strictly for members only.  From the October usage trend, members logged in between 9am and 10 am, & between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.

Before starting the SHC online, we would like two to three members, preferably those who have retired, to serve as meeting moderators.  Some training is required though.  If you have time, and would like to learn how to be a meeting moderator in an online forum, please let me know.  For an idea of what is needed.

Ideally, you need to love meeting and corresponding with other SilverHairs in realtime.  Able to smile and have fun online.  Can take all kinds of nonsense, without having to drink cold water.  Some patience.  Preferably, typing skills of 5 words a minute,  some basic knowledge of powerpoint (although not necessary), and some fiddling with the PC.  If you are smart, one lesson.  If you are fast, two lessons.  And, if you are keen, three lessons.  Read what is needed; and if you are interested to be an online meeting moderator, we can start, even without getting to meet one another.  Something adverturous.  Yeah.

There is likely going to be a Potluck session coming up in October.  Likely to be Saturday, 27  October 2007.  The Event Organiser is currently surveying the place.  I suspect he is having a headache, thinking about how he can make this event fun and exciting to SilverHairsClub members.  No other information, except please keep this date in your diary, until the Event Organiser has come up with his plans.  Location will likely be Pasir Ris Park, near Pasir Ris MRT.

This date has been postponed.  The Event Organiser will make an announcement soon.

Pictures of 18 Sept 2007 SHC monthl gathering

The Sept gathering was just over.  Held at the Hans Cafe @ Great Eastern, this monthly gathering was divided into two groups.  The first – for the Retired SilverHairs, and the second – for the still working SilverHairs.  In some cases, we were not able to tell who’s retired and who’s still working.

The late afternoon to early evening sessions were very enjoyable, and many SilverHairs get to meet the people whom they have read about on the SHC forum, but not met earlier.

Here are the pictures, for your review.  Click here.

SHC 17 July 2007 gathering – pictures

The monthly gathering was just over.  Shirley Wong was the event organiser.  Many SilverHairs spoke and discussed on the topic "Small Business ideas".  And new SilverHairs took turns to introduce themselves.

For those who would like to elaborate further on what they had presented during the evening, please add your comments.  This helps with the memory.

And, if you have forgotten who’s who, and like to contact a particular person, you may also write your comments on this post.  Do remember to write a profile of your interests.

And, if you had wanted to say something, but did not have the opportunity to speak, please share with us as still want to hear from you.

The pictures can be seen here.

Finally, any improvement ideas for future meetings?, don’t be shy.  Just drop your comments here too.

SilverHairsClub 07 Feb gathering photos

SilverHairsClub Feb gathering photos are out.  Over 40 participants attended, full house, but place was too small.  Guess we cannot use this place anymore.

After the monthly gathering, some SilverHairs crazily and last minute decided to go to Outram MRT market for Lo Hei and supper.  Guess too hungry after 8pm.  Here are the photos.

February gathering – Wed, 7 Feb

Information on gathering:  Usually various interest groups meet at the monthly gatherings.  One group is the D&D committee.  They will get to know one another.  Other groups just want to get to know one another.  So feel free to chat.  Everybody is new to one another.

When you arrive, please tick your name against the registration list.  Write your name on a sticker, and paste the sticker on your left/right of your blouse/shirt.  Take a voucher SGD 2.50 and you can purchase a drink at the counter.  We are packed that day.  Do enjoy the evening.

By now, I guess most of you get a feel on the type of activities which generate the most interest.   These activities aside, it seems there are very few interests groups on small business.  Around mid 2005, we had seen interests from SilverHairs looking at starting small businesses.  There were discussions on a cafe, a char kway teo stall, a bakery, small hotel, etc.  Unfortunately, they dwindled off.

However, I am aware that some SilverHairs have come together to form small groups, looking at stocks, money and other financial investments.  Personally, I am pleased to see these activities going on, although I dont have the money or courage to go into them.

It is important that SilverHairs continue to find meaningful ways to keep active and healthy.  No one is going to support us through our SilverHairs years.  I plan to live at least up to 70 years.  I have always encouraged SilverHairs to get together, and if the synergies click, go into some form of small business.  So if you have thoughts of going into a small business, share it out among other equally interested SilverHairs.  You never know, you may find someone with the same interest.

As 2007 kicks off, I think we can rekindled these ideas.  So, let’s schedule the date for SilverHairs who still have the entrepreneur spirit, to meet.

Date:  7 Feb, Wed.  Time:  1700 – 2000 hrs.  Venue:  Cafe inside MPH, between Robinson Road and Shenton Way, and between Raffles MRT and Tanjong Pagar MRT.

And, if you just like to meet other SilverHairs, to meet and chat, you are also welcome to come.  This is the Feb gathering.  Talk about the cookies you are making for Chinese New year or the next holiday to Perth, India or Thailand.  Any thing.

Entrance: Free;  a cup of Coffee or tea at $2.50 on the club.  For registered participants only.  Please be aware of the risks involved in businesses and investments.  No discussions on MLM and no direct selling during the gathering.

Here are the photos taken at the last SHC gathering on March 30.

Thu, Apr 20, 2006 – SilverHairsclub monthly gathering, 1800 hrs, ends 2000 hrs.  Venue:

Not confirmed.  Recommendation for venue would be appreciated.  Preference: near MRT stations.

Meeting of 17 Oct changed to small group meetings on Oct 26 – 28

The Oct 17 meeting is OFF.  This is because many SilverHairsClub members are working during the planned time.  Also, the date is not suitable to many.  Instead, for those who have responded to the meeting, I have arranged individual or smaller group meetings.  To share with members,

1. It is important I express the thinking and objectives of setting up such a group for Singaporeans over 45 years old.  I am 50, singaporean.  I am aware there are a few retirees clubs in Singapore, Community clubs and small social groups.  Overall the last 10 years, I have noticed a change in the living behaviour and expectations of the SilverHairs group. The financial crisis has changed the Asian market conditions and the thinking of companies in general.  Singapore has changed dramatically and while the over 45s are knowledgeable, experienced and financially capable, they have a tougher life ahead, compared to their predecessors.  There are a lot of debates on this, but I feel strongly these group can have a better life ahead.  Some are pessimistic over the future, and resigned to current lifestyles.

2. I feel the SilverHairs has a great future.  I am an optimistic person.  I believe that the wealth of knowledge and experience would put these SilverHairs into a category of society that can benefit themselves further and provide a more stimulating life.  As a group, SilverHairs are in a stronger position to work together a future for themselves. I am a non believer of a “do nothing” lifestyle for over 45s and retirees.  As someone who has seen colleaques retiring and then fading into a aimless lifestyle,  I see mentally sad souls in many of this age group.  But, of course, there are also contented ones. And, we have some very optimistic individuals among us.

3. The objective of the SilverHairsClub is clear.  It will provide a platform for over 45s to meet and make new friends.  Different individuals have different desires and interest.  They could just be looking for regular chit chats, some are looking for jobs, some looking to find small business partners and some just looking for common hobbies and travel companions. So far, we have a number of match makers, event organisers and membership promoters.  Most of the organising and groupings of interest will be managed by these groups of key people.  But, SHC will keep growing its membership so that the newer and different interest groups can have continued or even changing interests.

There would be monthly meets or activities, but these will be general activities – social, some makan and opportunities to exchange thoughts. At this level, the gatherings are intended to be large.

As the group gets bigger, we will add a new group of key people to generate corporate interest.  But this will be done sometime next year.  The idea is to grow the group, a thousand is the target. And, I believe it can get bigger.

4.  The advantage of this group is the fast communication.   All SilverHairs use email.  I see many as not net savvy though.  I plan to add SMS very soon.  We also  have the services of Ms Pranita, who will manage the database.  She is based in India.

For cost reasons, we avoid the use of printed newsletters and phone calls..

5. Language-wise, I see strong English skills among the group.  But as my Chinese is not strong, I am looking for strong Chinese skills supporters.

6. For a physical club presence, I am not supporting it at this stage, as it will unnecessarily strain the growing organisation, cost wise.

But, a regular place is good, and I am still exploring.

7. Club registration. Once the team is formed, we should register the club.  The club would not support sex, religious, racial, direct sales/MLM and political activities.

Some of the agenda, topics of discussion with individual and smaller groups would include:
1. Areas of cooperation and support.
2. Activities suited to the group – keeping members young at heart.  Special focus on outdoor activities.
3. Use of suggested places for large meetings.
4. Getting to know one another.
