An icon to represent a SHCian

For some time, I have been looking for an icon to represent a SHCian.  At first, I wanted to select a picture from our large collection of photos taken during events.  I thought over it, and decided otherwise.  It would be a tough job.  Then, I might offend someone.

Maybe a caricature would be good, but then, I am not sure who among us can do the drawing job.  Last night, I came across a website www.mywebface.com which allows any creative person to generate a cartoon from a set of simple tools.

My hope is to have one male and one female icon to represent SHC members on the website as well as other promotional materials.  If you are creative and like to take the challenge, and like to raise your hand to produce a pair of SHC icons, I would really appreciate it.

Madeline Tan – Profile

Hi Everyone!

Madeline, the newbie here and eager to get a feel of this social club as I am always happy to make new friends. Was formally from SinglesConnect until I was suddenly single no more and had to boot myself out.

Socially and for personal enhancement, I took on Qigong, Tai Chi and a host of other meditation sessions in the hope of a better connection with the Universe and all the wonders of spiritual clarity, awareness and of course spreading the LOVE. Er…I can’t help that being a child of the 60’s flower power era, it is inherent in my nature. So I try to send out joyful vibes whenever and wherever I can Reiki-wise. I have to mention Reiki in case you readers have wild ideas on how I spread the LOVE. emoticon

I am presently 49 years young and waiting for the major double-digit change next year as an excuse to hangout at the possible “wild” parties my has-been hippie friends might throw, as we are all experiencing the same welcoming number to our age. Being obsessive compulsive in nature, a round number helps too…though some women may beg to differ where age is concerned. Also “Wild” these days constitutes dancing for 10 minutes and taking a break of 20 haha!

emoticon

Avid traveler, photographer, foodie and dancer (swing and social), it is my hope that I may meet like-minded kakis for such activities. Der Hubby can just tag along and make a lot of noise as in – he has a loud voice and always acts like an excited puppy (some people like that though I don’t know why hmmm…). emoticon

So here’s to new acquaintances, hangouts and delightful times ahead!!!

Live Long and Prosper,

The Flea Mart is back cum the Monthly Gathering-October 31, 2009

Dear folks,

When we decided on the Flea Mart, i kaypo want to include the Games Day and include Mahjong competition but it just didn’t tickle your bones! Then we got the idea how about having a Carnival Day and having a jam session, again we have lukewarm response. Mati lah how to go ahead we have fixed cost to worry about! The caterer insists on one hundred pax for us to enjoy a good rate, now I ‘gabra’, cannot sleep and started counting sheep, still no help!

Next day I got a bright idea, how about Flea Mart and Monthly Gathering? No need to worry about food catering, we got Ya Kun to the rescue!

So die die this event is on and I apologised to fellow members and those who booked a booth I gave up too easily. I wanted to run and hide and go into hibernation, but have nowhere to hide! Now you all know why the EO always want to bang his head on the wall!

So, dear folks mark this day on your calendar and come give us your support!

September 12’09 Monthly Walk – Kembangan MRT to Bedok Jetty / Bougainvilla Garden

by Serene Low / Joyce Tan in SHC main bulletin, Walking
Date: 12 September 2009 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Kembangan MRT control station
Start Time: 4.30pm
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and Joyce Tan

The walk from the MRT would be along the canal of Frankel Estate and St. Patrick Secondary School towards the overhead bridge that connects Marine Parade Estate to the East Coast Park Beach.

Along the beach, you will see lots of picnickers, cyclists, joggers and roller skaters; you will feel the sea breeze, the ships lining up at the horizon and the richness of green matured trees giving us shades. Further down the walk, you will reach the activities section like the Cable Ski Park, the Skateboard Park, the anglers at the jetty.  Looking towards inland, you will see the skyline of East Coast with the many condominiums, HDB flats and the city front.

We can walk a little further down to see the Bougainvillea garden with many colors of the flowers.  You may take notes on how you can grow the plant by transplant on sandy soil and cocoa pits; or if you want a multi color flowering specie, try marcotting the various species on the stems of an anchor plant which could produce the multi-color effects of the Bougainvillea plant.

Walking back towards the ‘East Coast Lagoon Food Village’ try the famous rojak, cuttlefish kangkong, satay beehoon, sambal stingray and many others.  It can be very crowded though.

There is a feeder bus 401 that can take you to Bedok Interchange.  It travels thru part of Marine Parade Road, Siglap Road, New Upper Changi Road and ends at Bedok Interchange.

Do bring along your drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), repellent, sun block, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

See you at the walk!

Do you watch the weekend TV drama Ai ??

Whenever I am in Singapore over a weekend, I would watch this TV drama Ai ?.  Must have seen at least 10 episodes.  Full of tears, plenty of hate, lust and jealousy.  I heard from my colleaques that this TV drama will last 5 years.  And, if you have not seen the drama, watch out for the actors and actresses.  The guys are handsome and they dont seem to need to work.  The actresses are really pretty.  Each time, when the show is on, I would just wait patiently for this petite actress to come online.

The theme song is very nice too.  In case, you have not heard of it, here it is.  Click here.

Do you watch this Chinese drama, and what do you think of it?

Live to eat or eat to live?

Most of us will one way or another be confronted by this question. I want to carry the question posed by Terence further, is it enough to ask ourselves what make us feel good or look good. When I look in the mirror, at the receding hairline and the paunch on me; I deny that I am looking at myself. This just cannot be me like when I was about 20 years ago; I was sporting more hairs and lot of muscle mass then.

Just some years ago I invested in a toupee which cost me $1000, it certainly makes me feel good and look good. It was weaved on my head at four corners and each week I need to go back for maintenance which cost $15 for each visit. One day I look for my toupee and found it missing, someone may have stolen it! Well, vanity comes at a cost!

I love to jog and swim when I was younger. With some friends we frequently jog at Mac Ritchie Reservoir and I can swim ten laps free-style effortlessly. Those were the day; I have put off doing exercise and neglecting to eat healthily. At what price? Now I am contending with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

About twenty years ago I bought a book entitled ‘Eat right for your blood types’ by an author called, I think it sound like ‘Alamo’. It was recommended by a client of mine; I did try to read the book but was too lazy to read it through.

There will be lot of skeptics around denying the usefulness of sticking to the teaching. I belong to blood group A and realized that if I want to stay healthy and live longer I have to adhere to a certain diet. To my horror Type A blood type must stick to a vegetarian diet as we are prone to heart disease, cancer and diabetes. We must stay on foods in their natural state: fresh, pure and organic and we will naturally not put on weight.

I was disheartened to know that I must not consume beef, pork, lamb, veal, venison, duck and goose but luckily chicken, Cornish hens and turkey are okay. Seafood like carp, cod, grouper, mackerel, salmon and snail are most beneficial. Catfish, caviar, clam, crab, eel, frog, lobster, mussels, octopus, scallop, shrimp, squid and turtle are no no! Dairy products of all kind not good at all for Type A. Yogurt, goat cheese and goat milk are okay but all other cheeses and milk not allowed.

I have thought of becoming a vegetarian but the idea of denying me a juicy sirloin steak made me gave up the idea. The spirit certainly is willing but the flesh is tremendously weak! Will I be strong enough to stay on this diet knowing that the reward is overwhelming, to look good and feel good? I am looking for like-minded folks willing to share my dream of eating healthily and living life with zest and vibrancy.

Those who are curious to know their blood types and diets, there are:

Type A is people who should be vegetarian and avoid meat and dairy products.

Type B should eat red meat and fish. Type O should eat lots of animal protein and little carbohydrates and Type AB should eat a combination of Types A and B.

Type A+ :

  1. Dan
  2. Caroline
  3. Patrick Lee
  4. Angela
  5. Mary Chan

Type AB+ :

  1. Tian Soo

Type O :

  1. Amy Soon
  2. Catherine Ho

Type O + :

  1. Nor

Type XO ?

Sept Monthly Investment Meeting

Hi gals and guys,

I thought a new post will help grab your attention.

We got lucky and have managed to booked the Presentation Room at Phillip City Tower Level 6 (same place lah) from 1.30 to 4.30pm on Sat, 5 Sep 2009.

We shall have our next meeting then and there are some feedback the last meeting that I would like to address in the agenda.

1. Online Trading has been well requested and learning this skill will be an important step to manage your money and trade better. I will conduct a 30-min training session using live POEMS, I will see if we can have access to the terminals there for some hands-on during a short break. Those who wants to open POEMS account (free) beforehand, plse email me separately (foost@phillip.com.sg).

2. Stock Picks & Fundamentals – I shall talk about this in more details. We can also share and identify some attractive small & mid cap stocks and get organised to do some research on them as a team (investor club).

3. Review the stock market (STI) and anticipate potential upcoming correction levels.

4. Analyse the stocks you want to know more about. From feedback, some listen to “tips” and buy without knowledge; some got burnt badly before, are stuck with loads of shares and don’t know how to move on to take advantage of the opportunities that are opening up now.

5. Re-visit money management, timing market entry & exits and stop loss (auto with POEMS ProTrader).

6. Initiate discussion on Investor Club. Suggestion to call it SHC Top & Bottom Club (like sell top and buy bottom as motto)?

7. There will be a 30min break for socialising and chatting as we now have 3 hours. I know the last time was rush rush.

I have been asked if I can handle the buying and selling shares as a Phillip Security Consultant. Yes, contactually I am a Remisier with Phillip but have the flexibility of operating a mobile office as a consultant. Yes, I can open your trading account with online POEMS free of charge (even if you already have one) and yes, I can meet you anytime and place to do it. And yes, I will answer your questions, meet you, advise on shares and guide you to trade online to save on brokerage fees (0.28% vs 0.5/0.4%) if you so desire (especially for SHCians, to help you save money).

Lastly, any further feedback for the agenda are welcome. I know few have asked for coffees and soft drinks the last time. There is a great coffee shop at City Link about 50M from the City Hall MRT entrance and good local coffee O only 90cents. Maybe can buy during break (we will have a break this time, note the time is longer).

Same thing as usual, plse leave you name behind if you are coming so that we know how many will be there.

Thanks for your kind co-operation and looking forward to “siow liao lah” positive energy greeting again.

Rosalind Lee – Profile

emoticon  Hello, I am new to SHC and my name’s Rosalind Lee. I was referred to this club by
a friend and I’m glad there’s an informal club for Baby Boomers aside from the
Residents Zone/Community Clubs’ Senior Citizen Clubs.

I am 58 years old and a mother with two daughters and a son. I’m also have two
grandchildren so like it or not, I am a grandmother.
My former jobs were related to training with topics ranging from Personal Grooming to
Product Knowledge. I should say I am in my elements when addressing a large crowd
but I’m lousy in communications with small crowds or a handful of people. I am an
Introvert and I have often been labelled a ‘snob’. *Sniff sniff*
I quit working since Year 2003 and I travel a lot with my husband when he goes on
        leisure or business trips.

Most of my friends are younger than me and they keep me ‘young’ in my outlook on
life. Well, by joining this club I hope to have more friends belonging to my same
generation and hopefully find compatriots to reminisce about the good old days.
By the way, I am not as staid as I sound here. :p

Another flea market and garage sale, before the year ends ?

There I go again.  Still enjoying my hospitalisation leave, and the mind is again drifting and dreaming.  We had a reasonably successful flea market some time last year.  At the time, we had about 12 tables, in town, on a weekend afternoon, attended by SHC members and passer-bys.

Thinking about it again, I was hoping we can do so again.  As usual, I dont have a place in mind, the date, the time or even how we should go about it.  However, I am hoping for a few options to surface.

1.  Someone who has a large enough place and who is prepared to open almost the whole day for interested members to display and sell their items.  Members would jaga their own items, and remove any unsold items at the end of the day.  No commercial items.

2.  Someone who knows an organisation prepared to let us use the compound for a day.

Do email me if you can assist in locating 1 or 2.

And, although we have not found a place yet or the cost or the date, please indicate your interest if you have something/s to sell; something you dont want to use, have more than enough at home.  Preference or priority will be given to members on a first come basis.

Investment Update Aug 09

Dear all, I thought it might be more convenient to start a new post, troblesome to "scrull" around for some or maybe not at all emoticon

Thanks to the 43 or so SHCians who overwhemingly support the last Sat talk and meeting. It was a lively meeting and I am sure all have enjoyed it. We ran out of time and had to rush through at the end and ommitted the discussion on inevestor club. Also due to time, regretfully only half duly complete the feedback form.

It is encouranging to have positive feedback from Kenneth and LH Jie in their respective earlier postings; and also supportive comments from Terence and Tim. Thanks guys!

As suggested by Kenneth, a short summary for those who have not attended is duely.

The theme: Stock Market: Preparedness to meet Opportunity = Managed Luck and topics included

1. Positive Energy Attracts Opportunity

>> Happiness is the source of goodwill and positive energy. We are only as happy as those around us. By way of introduction, we tell one another how "good" we were feeling to the tune of James Brown’s song with same tiltle. High "5"s all around for re-inforcement. So now we can get lucky.

2. ST Index: 1998 to 2009 – Technical Analysis & Opportunities

>> We looked at the last boom and bust cycle and identified support lines and retracement patterns. From technical analysis, we have looked at possible retracement level around STI 2700-2750 points, following Fibonacchi’s retracement method and identifying strong resistenace turned support level. Next, we looked at possbile correction levels at 2420, 2244, 2112 & 1936 that we need to watch out for as prossible Fibonacchi’s turning points (buying 4D also suggested).

3. Investment Planning

>> We covered Basic Technical Analysis using Fibonacchi’s retracement; trend, resistance and support lines, top & bottom turning-point indicators, and divergence indicators to help us identify an opportunity when it arises and to prepare for entering or exiting a position (WHEN TO BUY). We then see how to enter a trade looking for candles confirmation and breaching of resistance lines; and how to exit with confirmation of breaching of support lines (HOW TO BUY). And of cource, a STOP loss plan (HOW TO CUT LOSS).

>> We tackled the question of "I only want to buy at $1 and then sell at $1.20 to make 20 cents, why should I be bothered with all these technical analysis?" with topic on Trading Psychology and see how FEAR, GREED, HOPE and EGO go trading shares. The picture becomes obvious that we need to cleard away all our emotion when investing or trading and follow the rules. If you don’t know the rules, go learn or rely on somebody in cahoot who knows the rule.

>> Next up, Fundamental Analsysis and Stock Pick which dealt with boring facts and figures about companies – price pattern and volatility, see the future and look at the past of the company, news and institution buyers. In USA, this is largely automated with a scoring system and available for subcription on the web. We are still backward, can this be a opportunity for SHC to develop and offer such services for Sgp and Asean market?Investor club members can share such info and save time (WHAT TO BUY).

>> Money & Risk Management – we talked about float and max 2% risk per trade (HOW MUCH TO INVEST). Allocation plan is such that the no. of successive losses is less than the 2% max risk. The idea is trade to survive (loose less money) rather than how much I want to make. Determine risk appetite, return, time frame, which instruments and apply risk managenet. We examine different investment scenerios as different types of risk management.

>> The emphasis on Online Trading and the basic skills needed to get started. I can start a class with POEMS and it is free to open a Phillip account (I will be happy to help) that comes with free access to the online POEMS. There is no rule to restrict you to only one trading account. You can have as many as you want and all free. Feedback needed if you want to attend. Commission is lower for online trading, so better learn.

4. Admin & Trading Rules

>> The do & don’ts in trading, the credit limit and what does it mean, the settlement date and forced selling, the wrong keying in of orders online and how to appeal, the opening of trading account and the service level of your remisier/ dealer. You can open as many Phillip accounts as you want and trade with the remisier who gives you the best service in making and protecting your money.

5. Investor Club – no time to discuss, postphone to next time. Feedback here is welcomed. For starter, I am suggesting we meet socially once a month and see how it goes.

Lastly, the feedback form is great for us to plan our talks better in future and to reach out to specific requests from the group. I have only received 19 on Sat and I would like to request those who have not done so to send an email to me foost@phillip.com.sg or sms XXXXXXX your email address so that I can forward you the soft copy for you to fill in and return via email. Or just drop you email address here in the post if your are too busy.

Please feel free to comment, ask or suggest. However, do give me some days if any lengthy respond is expected. And just call me if it is about the stock market price movements, it is time to watch for buying opportunities as most blue chips have started to pullback already. Crucial news from USA this Friday includes CPI, capacity untilization, industrial production and consumer sentiments.

Will keep you post on the next talk… cheers, ben

What is your secret to looking good and feeling good?

All of us have our own secrets to looking good and feeling good.  We might think there are no secrets; but if we dont do anything about our health, our body and our mind, we can deteriorate.  I see many SHCians look and feel very good.  You see them at walks, cycling, badminton, dancing, tours and conversations.  They have great smiles, firmed bodies, healthy looks and are pleasant to talk with.

All of us have reached a stage in our life where such tips can help us feel good and look vibrant.  Do share with us, what is your secret to looking and feel good.  Is it your dress, hairstyle, or is it disco dancing all night or a glass of wine every day?  Dont be shy.  We love to hear from you.

Please do not copy and paste from the internet.  Please do not give advice.  Simply your secret.

Terence Seah

Knowing fellow SHCians:

  • Geraldine Ting – My secret is to keep smiling, laughing and keeping peace, while enjoying my vices.  I love going home before 1am.
  • Mary Lee (Perth) – My secret is a healthy drink of Korean ginseng red extract with honey, raising a garden and pampering myself once in a while.  My secret to feeling good is when I am able to help someone look good and feel good.
  • Terence Seah – My secret is a young son, moving all the time, and wash my face without soap.  My new secret to feel good is to read the SHC forum everyday.
  • Lina Ng – My secret is to start the day early, swim, gym and maintain crazy circle of friends.
  • Steven Chan – My secret to feeling good is to be with my dog and bringing him for walks.  Daily gardening, alternate day swimming and cooking my specialties.  As for looking good, I think my height is just great.  Just hoping to gain another 50 kg.
  • Tim Liu – My secret to looking good is my hair.  I feel good when I have some things to comment, and enjoy making fun of everybody else. I grumble when I talk about myself.
  • Hou Chong – My secret is really to be passionate about what I do.   And, I feel good when I smile at you and you smile back.  I love my "Min kiah Yu".

  • Mary Chan – Every body knows my secret.  It’s keeping fit walking and dancing.  I believe it is important to feel good and look good too.
  • Marilyn Tang – My secret is feeling good and looking good is my early retirement at 50.  I keep healthy, meet friends, keep investing and watching the world go by.

This Saturday’s Investment Talk cum Meeting

Dear all who have registered (in total 51 SHCians),

Plse be reminded the talk cum meeting is this Sat 080809 (auspicious day, double ‘fatt’) from 2.00 to 4.00PM at Raffles City Tower level 6 Phillip Presentation Room.

The STI index has briefly touched 2,700 points this mroning and retracted. The 2700 point is the very strong support turned resistance level. It is also the 50% retracement between the Oct07 high  at 3907 and Mar09 1455 low, in line with Fibonacchi’s retracement projection. So, are we due for a correction? If so, how much will the STI pullback? Is this my second chance accumulate at reduced risk? If I have shares now (CPF or others), should I be selling now?

Well, to add some spice to this Sat’s talk, I shall include a Technical Analysis of the STI (from the past to now what’s next?), looking at possible retracement and support levels in the coming months.

So, don’t miss the Sat’s event. The theme is Stock Market: Preparedness (when meeting Opportunity = Managed Luck).  Plse refer July 12 Post for topics and details.

Cheers, Ben
