CYCLING -TO NEW HEIGHTS

Good morning cycling kakis !

Due to commitements – I missed out the Penggarang cycling trip–this time I make sure I do not miss the Sept monthly group cycling- so I am submitting my name NOW even b/4 registration opens !!

Cycling had been in my blood – for 3 years of my secondary education in Malacca – I cycled daily about 4 kilometres rain / shine to school ( + of course cycled back home – no play cheat – lah by taking bus home !!!!)

Last month my son with his Deutche Bank Vietnamese collegue toured Hue / Hoi An ( Central Vietnam ) by the usual A/C van + a very unique bicycle riding tour exploring Hoi An (small town ) then was escorted cycling to a farm visit where they had some hands -on >herbal foot massage> learn simple Viet snacks cooking >then lunch in the farm with all the freshness vegees ! He had the Viet. tour agency which organises this 4D3N tour of Hoi Ann + Hue .

As I had been to North / South Viet. but not Central -I am thinking of organising the usual A/C bus tour + 3/4 day Hoi Ann town + farm visit cycling trip ! I had checked with the local Viet. tour – my calculations based on 8 persons group : with Silkair return flight 4D3N+ food + hotel stays -cost per adult is about SGD 800 . More persons go -less to pay — Silkair flight now is about SGD 460 – hope price do not go up !!!

I intend to go from 29 October ( Fri) >> return on 1 Nov ( Mon) OR 12 Nov (Fri ) to 15 Nov ( Mon) .  Silkair also flies there on Wed >> << Saturdays — I am free to go on these dates also!

Anyone interested ?? I shall go with min. 8 cyclists to bring the costs down !!! for those non -cyclist if have sufficient numbers I shall talk to the Viet. tour to provide A/C van transport all the way !

SHC Fleamart – Sat 20 Nov, now changed to Sat 11 Dec 2010

A date has been tentatively set for the next Fleamart, if not most likely, on Sat 20 Nov 2010.  Time is likely from 0900 hrs to 1500 hrs.  Location is not firmed yet.

Members interested to take up a stall are encouraged to take note of this date and time.  If you have items for sale, you may indicate them under this Post.  Pre-orders are also encouraged.  Commercial items or products are not allowed.  So, go ahead, whether new items, old items, used items, sealed and packed edible items.

Any form of sale or advertising outside this Post not accepted, and likely will be deleted.  This is a once or twice a year event where selling is permitted, at the SHC Fleamart.

Where possible, the location will be opened to the public for the sale of products.  However, all stalls will be made available to SHCians only.

Suggestions or ideas welcome.  However, please do not be disappointed if any idea is not taken up.  Have fun.  And, of course, if you raise your hands to offer assistance, I will be most pleased; but again, please do not be disappointed if I do not pick it up.  But, no harm, trying too.

The plan is to concide this Fleamart with the November monthly gathering.

Put on your thinking caps. If we have a Porn night, how and what do you think this event will be like?

SHC members are creative, knowledgeable, fun and out of this world.  We have all reached a stage when some of us are entering the second phase of their lives.  Still for some, the adventure starts at the third stage.  But, there are plenty of things we want to do.  We want to climb trees.  We want to travel to places we have never been to.  To Ho Chinh Minh, to Bandung.  To Taiwan.  To …..   We want to get out of the four walls.  All these 30 years, we have been working.

We want to cycle all over the island, and to places other cyclists have been to.  We want to pick up dancing, and dance all night.  Gosh, there is no end.  And, we always tell ourselves, we need to start somewhere.

SHC, on its own, does not organise any activity.  It is purely a platform whereby SilverHairs get to meet new friends.  Activities are always, as a result, of these gatherings.  Activities are also the result of initiatives of members.  Membership is simple.  It is also lifetime; and all members are encouraged to organise at least one activity during the life of their membership.

Back to Porn night.  I like to dream.  Of course, share the dream with you too.  This time around, I have been thinking that a Porn night will work for us.  We are all over 45.  Nothing too shy to discuss and nothing too inhibitive to consider such ideas as absurd, vulgar and distasteful.  We open our minds and our ears.  We see and we participate.  Why not?

We all know what is a porn magazine.  There are porn websites.  Some are free, and others are pay-to-view.  There are sex shops, that sell exciting things like used underwears and used condoms.  Our kids are equally exposed to porn.  My 11-year old son is now asking me, "Pa, come and have a look".  So, much about porn.

If we open our minds, and if we have a Porn night, what and how do you think this event will be like?  I think Nov and Dec are tempting months.  Let’s go for it.

Monthly Meet Agenda

Hi guys and gals;

I fully agree for any meet should have a/ agendas – so that those attending knows / prepares for it – more concrete results can be seen. After the "serious agenda meeting " – then all can let their hair down to enjoy themselves as per normal !

Such first meet must – as suggested have a committee formed – a member as the main co-ordinator ( MCO )  for a particular activity. MCO will invite other members to assist him/her in planning / organising the activity.

Are we allowed as a non-registered club to have such a set-up ??? Someone needs to check on this ! Other than that I am most willing to step forward and be counted on to be one of the committee!

Should we have an agenda for the monthly meeting?

Most of us are glad to be a member at the Silverhairs Club and appreciate what Terence has done in providing a platform for us to meet. So far Terence has suggested and introduce many activities and carry it through in the last few years. As member we are happy to be part of this and look forward to more participation to come.

Is there something we could do or suggest to bring the club to the next level? Out of this Club many smaller groups are formed and they in turn meet up privately and persue their common interest.

The September meeting will be different from what we had previously. Live singing  by Jeffrey Gan on the keyboard and karoeke singing where member brings their own cd wll be the happenings of the day! Board and card games will also be encourage where member can look for other member sharing similar interest.

I would like to see more participation from member, how about meeting up and have a time where various member can share their thought and mission in life, something in line with Toastmaster International. Having our meeting in Han’s may not provide the privacy needed in such sharing by public speaking. We need to find a place more enclosed for such.

We all come from various background, there will be something exciting to share. Having to make comment on the post may be prohibiting as certain topic may be sensitive. When we meet and listen to fellow member share their goals and ideal in life, a certain bond are created.

Volunteers will be ask to share something about their life that  is memorable and enriching. Do you know that I have tried bungee jumping just because I was trying to get someone’s attention. Oh, there are so much to share and talk about.

It may be just meeting up and sharing each other profile and ideal in life. So, fellow member come to this September gathering. I would want to try something out where we allocate a time frame for each of us to speak out and suggest what they want to see happening in this unigue Club! So many thing I would want to share, my life, my passion and motivation in life and of course some of you may want to share too. Let’s hear from you?

Good morning with warmest greetings from me to you  guys and gals !

I was following this Club recommended by my x- collegue Catherine for sometime now – but due to my work n other matters – I did not actively took part in the activities . Now I had just been retired since 1 August – time is now on my hands – and so here I am !

Let me release some of my personal info :

Full name : Fong Ten Meng ( Mr) — my friends call me Fong Fong !! Age : 62  old yrs – but like johnny walker born in 1948 – still going strong / healthy ! – live in Tampines East

Interest : outdoor life / adventure especially out of S’pore  + watch games ( soccer/table tennis / badminton ). Like to play badminton – may join the on -going sessions

Not interested : dancing / play mahjong -cards – reason no interest to learn in depth !

Monthly Gathering – September 15, 2010 (Wednesday)

Our September meeting will be different from all that we have before. It will be held during the happy hours at a unique location with fantastic ambience! It’s another great time to make new friend and catching up with the other ‘young at heart’ friend.

This time round will will have live singing accompanied by Jeffrey Gan at the keyboard. There is a big screen and an overhead projector, bring your own cds for karoeke singing at no additional charge. We may even clear the tables and chairs for some dancing!

This place can sits over 200 pax, we can have board or card games in one corner and there is a pool/billiard table at $3.00 per games. We are at liberty to order foods and drinks, there is also an afresco area just outside the restaurant overlooking the bay.

The Place: Love the World Bistro and Bar/30 Raffles Avenue #02-05/Singapore Flyer

Time: 5.00 to 9.00pm

Pedestrian access via the waterfront and Raffles Avenue. Nearest MRT Promenade Station with just a short walk to the venue.

The Singapore Flyer Shuttle operates from 10.00am to the Singapore Flyer from the City Hall MRT (Coleman Street Bus stop, next to St Andrew’s Cathedral) Last bus from Singapore Flyer at 22.55pm to City Hall Station. Parking at the Singaore Flyer multi-storey carpark or at Marina Square at $2.00 per entry after 9.00pm.

Face Book – Are you in touch with the biggest community in the world?

For many many months, I do receive emails asking me to join FaceBook, not from unknown people, but from people I know.  My immediate reaction is to look for the “Delete” button.  I do have a FaceBook account, but it is very dormant.

I read an article recently that Facebook is the world’s biggest community.  You can be sure of finding your long lost friend. Must be a great way to find where your old classmates are.  I am still not willing to spend time on FaceBook; because it can be very contagious and infectious.  Afraid I might spend too much time on it.

Well, some SHCians are FaceBook members; and they swear by the book that they get to find new friends and old ones, not just in Singapore; but across oceans.  But, the fact that it is also the biggest country in the world makes me feel that I should at least look at it.  What is FaceBook and why telcos and corporationis are jumping to have a presence in Facebook.

For those who are already in Facebook, please share why FaceBook is something good for guys and girls like us.  What are the benefits, and whyI should spend some time on it.  Should we be encouraged to have an account.

Please do not copy and paste from somewhere.  We should hear from your personal experience.  And I was thinking that one day some of us, with Facebook experience, can give a talk on the biggest community in the world.

  • By Car – park at Palawan Beach open carpark @ $3 for 8 hours;  or park at Beach carpark (covered carpark) @ $5 for 1st 4 hours (from 3 – 7pm) and $2 per entry after 7pm.

When I was about 18 years old, I use to go camping at Changi Beach just behind where the British Army had a Survival School. behind the school, this stretch of beach was quite secluded. Sometimes we would organize Beach Parties there. By about 2 am, after most of the guests have gone home, a few of us guys would go ‘skinny dipping’. The few girls that were still there would pretend not to watch when we strip but after we get into the water they would shout comments at us from the beach.  I still remember 2 comments even up till today.

  • “Beware of the fishes, they might mistaken yours for a big worm”
  • ‘Don’t shake it more than 3 times…….it is call masturbation”

I am organizing our August  monthly meeting at  Palawan Beach, Santosa.  It will be a Beach Party, but we will not go ‘skinny dipping’ because at our age, I think we will look gross. Even the police would not want us in their station. They will put us straight into the lunatic asylum. I know this will not stop some of you from doing it.

My friend who owns Samudar Indian Restaurant at Palawan beach in Santosa has agreed to let us use the Restaurant on Saturday 21st August.  The restaurant has an alfresco dining area and an aircon dining hall. It can accommodate 200 people.  There are showers on the beach in front of the restaurant and changing facilities nearby.

We will start the party at 3pm. You can swim, play with balls, build sand castle or just enjoy the sea breeze. I need volunteers to organize a few beach games. For those who prefer to stay indoor, you can relax and talk or play board games.   At 7 pm we will have Indian Buffet.  The alfresco dining area which is on a wooden deck and the aircon dinning hall are both very suitable for dancing. You can dance anywhere at any time. You can also do it at the beach but we have to organize sound system outside. You can also pretend to be a teenager on your first date and bring a partner to the bush….there are many dark bushes but tissues are not provided. If you want to sing KOK we have to organize our own portable system because the Restaurant have no KOK licence. We leave the Restaurant at 10pm but you can stay at the beach as long as you like.

Public transport to Palawan Beach is by LRT from VIVO City. It cost $3. Those who drive, pay $7 per car regardless of the number of passengers. The buffet would cost $20 per head.  We will provide tit-bits from the collection of $5 each from those who pay after 31st July.  Those of us who are there in the afternoon should at least buy a drink from the Restaurant to help them pay their staff who would serve you.The restaurant would waive corkage charge for alcoholic drinks we bring. But please don’t bring any other outside food or drinks into their Restaurant.

Haikou – 13 to 18 Oct 2010 F&E

Weiwei Members,

Jetstar airticket return to Haikou is about $130 inclusive of 20kg baggage.  M thinking of going there 4 for short holi for relaxing time.  No intention of going towards to places, like Sanya, Xin Long or Dong Hai as been there too many times.  Just will be enjoying the scenic places around in Haikou, massage, reflexology, shopping, etc etc… For these, I think 5-days holi would be just nice lor.. anyone 1 2 come along wif me.

Of cos, for those thinking of going for a longer days to explore further south, you can do so at your own.  I can try to get our Haikou fren to scout a reasonable tour package for you lor..

Cycling to Sungai Rengit, Pengarang on Sat, 28 Aug 10

Ride is confirmed if there are at least 10 participants otherwise it will be cancelled. This is to facilitate charter of ferry so that we don’t have to spend hours queuing for ferry to and fro.

Pengarang, Malaysia
A good opportunity for newbies (even if you just can ride) who want to get a first taste of riding in Malaysia amidst light traffic. It’s never the same compare with your usual cycling at PCN (Park Connector) and on the roads in Singapore.One-way distance is 17km. Total 34km. As you cycle, you will enjoy the scenic countryside, almost empty road, roadside stalls selling drinks and fruits, friendly villages waving their hands to cheer you on and the aromatic fresh air.

Itinerary :

7.30 a.m. : Collect rented bicycles from bicycle shop at Changi Village (for those who are renting).
8.00 a.m. : Assemble at Changi Ferry Terminal Point and hand in all passports for recording purpose.
8.30 a.m. : Ferry leaves Changi Village for Tanjong Pengilih Ferry Terminal in Pengarang.
9.30 a.m. : Arrive at Tanjong Pengilih Ferry Terminal. Pass through immigration check.
9.40 a.m. : Take group photo and cycle to Sungai Rengit.

Celebrating Singapore’s 2010 National Day

Very soon, we will be celebrating Singapore National Day 2010.  For many of us, we have lived on this island for more than 45 years.  We have grown, and so have our children, siblings, friends and relatives.  As we get older, we develop fond memories of the old Singapore.  We have also learnt to love Singapore.

“Party services” for the young and old – maybe another idea

Now, back to my cranky thoughts.  We have discussed a number of ideas, something for our retirement days.  In line with the Blue Helmet concept, I am beginning to think that some of us can gather together to provide party services to the public – young and old.  Something which I think we can do, even if we are over 45.

Singapore has a bigger population of high-end PRs and new citizens.  Maybe more kids, more need to meet with fellow Singaporeans.  Maybe more generous and open to kids parties.  Singaporean families may be looking forward to bringing their kids friends together; and of course in a more relaxed mood.  Maybe as a business, we can provide party services to them.

Then, there is the older generation in Singapore.  I guess parties would be good.  Not simply cooked food in the house.  Maybe parties, at home or somewhere in a untouch spot in Singapore.  Maybe, kids are looking at more than just going to a restaurant.  A birthday party, an anniversary or even a family gathering.  A different father’s day or even a celebration for good school results.

I dont have all the ideas and plans; but I guess for those who are interested, we can get together.  Of course, some would like to be party organisers.  Alot of work; but I think this is something suitable for the over 45s who are looking for some work, hopefully exciting and rewarding.

Broadly, I would think this party services would take in some SHCians in different roles.

We just had the D&D in July and would have the Beach Party soon at the end of August.  It’s about time, we have the regular monthly gathering at Hans.  For some, the excitement will be just being back from the kelong trip; for others, it will have been the National Day celebrations just over.  And, for others, the fun will be the beach party at Sentosa.

Time to just meet up, chat, plan your activities, pay back the dues from the World Cup, or maybe think about some charity events before the end of the year.  Maybe, how about making some money for retirement or better still do some planning for retirement.  Starting a business, climbing Mount Everest, go to Bandung, ladies chit chat, going up to HK to meet Geraldine, or going to see Ben Foo in Ho Chi Minh city.  Talk about the D&D or talk about the Prom night.  The regular monthly meeting is just a great way to meet.  What shall we do with the used pyjamas?  Aiyah, no end.  Plan and organise your hobbies group; meet and chat.  Now, for the details.

  • Date:  Tuesday, Aug 10, 2010
  • Time:  1600 to 2030 hrs.  Early session for those who are retired; and later session for those still working.
  • Place:  Hans Cafe at Great Eastern Building, Upper Pickering Street.
  • Charges:  Free, you are free to buy your own F&B at the counter.
  • Dress:  anything.

Other Details:

  • Bring your name tag; If you dont have, we will give you a sticky label to place on your dress/shirt.
  • Registration required.  Strictly for SHC members only.  If your SHC member friend is coming, please encourage him/her to register personally with the correct name.
  • Strictly no politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.

Jam n Butter is back! – August 13, 2010 (Friday)

Dear folks,

Let’s meet again for a night of fun and dancing. Those who dun dance may also come, perhaps the dancing germs will  spread to you. Line dancing also welcome!

Venue:   EZ4Y Dance Studio, 169C Selegie Road (Opposite Selegie House and in between Frangrance and Hotel 81.

Time: 8.00pm – 12.00 midnight

Cost:  $5.00 per pax with two bottles of mineral water.

This event for Silverhairs Club member only. You can bring your wines and liquors.

You may park opposite at Selegie House on an hourly basis or at Wilkie Edge Shopping Centre at $2.00 per entry after 6.00pm. Take about 3 minutes walk to dance studio! Free parking after 5.00pm at Niven Rd, Short St or Prinsep St.

Please indicate your coming early as I need to book the dance studio!
