SHC Jan Monthly Gathering at Hans Cafe, Wed, 23 Jan 2013

Dear Members emoticon

The next monthly gathering is scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 23 January 2013

Time:  4.30 – 8.30 pm

Venue: Hans Cafe – Great Eastern  Building, Upper Pickering Street

Charges: Free.  You are free to buy your own food and beverages at the counter

Please bring along your name tag.  If you don’t have one, we will give you a stick-on label.

Registration required.  Strictly for SHC members only.

Strictly no politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.

The aim of the monthly gathering is to enable social networking among SHC members, for new and old Silverhairs to meet one another.   Time to just meet up, chit chat, plan your activities, have fun etc.

The following topics are food for thought and can be used for informal discussion among members during the meeting:

– What is happening to our Singapore men today? With all the latest happenings? (hee hee)

– Is taking up a medical insurance necessary especially for Silverhairs? What happens if a person retires and is no longer covered under any medical insurance during his Silver years?

– Will hobbies help to alleviate the ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ and promote Active Aging (keeping us physically and mentally alert and happy) ?  Examples of such activities are dancing, karaoke singing, uke or guitar playing, travelling, quilt making, balloon sculpting, scrapbook creations, mahjong, brisk walking, coffee-meets etc.

– Is it advisable for Silverhairs to invest in stocks and shares or is there a better and safer way to grow our ‘nest egg’?

Gathering specially for retirees and semi-retirees, Wed 26 Sep 2012

The last gathering for retirees worked out well.  We shall have another few more sessions.  This time, Vincent Khoo will be the EO. Vincent is knowledgeable with Thailand, and has been living there for the last 20+ years. I think he is now 78 years old, still fit and ready to live many more years.

This retirees gathering is a good opportunity for SHC members to interact with other SilverHairs.  Working SHCians can come too, if you are not working that day.  There is no topic or agenda.  It’s for you to get to know new friends.

I wont be attending, as I am not available this period.

  • Date:  Wed 26 Sep 2012
  • Time:  1430 to 1630 hrs.  We finish at 1630 hrs sharp.
  • Place:  Robinson Road, MPH cafe, 63 Robinson Road, nearest Tanjong Pagar or Raffles place MRT.

2nd SHC Live!, Sun 12 Aug 2012

The last SHC Live! was a good success; and I like to make it more frequent for now.  This will give more members an opportunity to meet other members, especially the new ones.  Technology has made it possible for seniors like us to communicate without leaving our homes.  Imagine we are 80 years old, and cannot walk or leave our homes, and we can still talk with one another live over the internet.  I will moderate the initial few events, and then I will ask fellow members to act as EOs to take initiative to organise SHC Live!, especially those sessions with agenda.  Please raise your hands, dont be shy.

Next SHC Live!

  • Date:  Sun 12 Aug 201
  • Venue:  Your own home
  • Time:  2100 hours to 2330 hours.  (Early birds should come in at 2055 hrs; late birds will be admitted when there is room.  You may go home anytime too.)

Announcing the launch of SHC Live!; use of SKYPE, Sat 4 Aug 2012

Dear members,

  • SilverHairsClub.com is a good way to meet new friends and keep in touch with SHCians.
  • The monthly gatherings are another way to keep in touch regularly, meet new friends.
  • The Interests groups are another way to share common interests, and meet friends.

As we get older, we become less mobile and less willing to leave our house.  We may also be busy, got grand children to look after or just back from a wedding dinner or dance.  We may be somewhere else in the world.

But, we still need to meet friends, keep in touch, and not feel lonely, just because we are house bound.

Let’s have another way to meet friends, old and new, keep in touch via SHC Live!

Technology has made this possible.  Singapore is going to have one of the fastest broadbands.  Most HDB flats and houses are going to be connected.  We can be connected from anywhere in Singapore.  See one another.  SKYPE is one of the applications we can use.  Go into SKYPE.com and sign up for an account online.  If you are not sure, ask online and someone can help you.

  • Venue:  Your home, anywhere, your own PC, note book  or IPAQ, your own SKYPE
  • Day of the month:  First Saturday of each month
  • Time: Gathering starts starts 2200 hrs and ends 2300 hrs.  This time is chosen, because this is the most popular time SHCians come online.
  • Moderator:  Terence Seah (Initially for a few meetings, and after that volunteers appreciated).  I am also pretty new; but I dont think you want to wait until I become an expert.  My account name is swift_squirrel.  Please invite swift_squirrel to your skype contact list.
  • We can also have group video, and I am hoping we can introduce ourselves during the first part of SHC Live!
Those who are good or comfortable with SKYPE, please help and advise.  Let me know if you can help me. I need a time keeper, so that we can keep to schedule.  I need someone to help chair so that those who wish to speak gets a chance.  Everybody wants to speak too.

Next and first SHC Live! is on Sat 4, starting 2200 hours.  We will connect you 10 minutes before 2200 hours. So make sure your SKYPE is on.

SHC monthly gathering (Central) Wed Jun 20, 2012

We have had our monthly gatherings, for most times at Hans Cafe in the CBD.  At the same time, we have Robert Ong organising the Easterlies group, while Dan Huang is re-initiating the Westerlies group.  The East and the West groups appeal well to the retirees.

Well, back to the Central group.  These gatherings tend to appeal to the retirees during the early part of the gathering, starting at 4pm.  After 5 or 6pm, the timings appeal well to the still-working members.  For this gathering, I tend not to have an agenda or topic.

Regular members use this gathering as an opportunity to meet one another, as well as meet new ones.

New members come and introduce themselves to other members.  New members can introduce themselves on this Post, so that others will know them before the gathering.

  1. Venue:  Hans Cafe, at Upper Pickering Street. Ground floor, at the back half of the cafe.
  2. Agenda:  Getting to know new and more SilverHairs.
  3. Date:  Wed Jun 20, 2012
  4. Time:  1600 hrs to 2030 hrs.
  5. Charge:  No fee.
  6. F&B:  Pick and pay whatever you like at the counter.
  7. Strictly for registered SHC members only.  All members are required to bring their own name tag.  If you need to make your own name tag, CLICK HERE.

This gathering is a good opportunity to catch up with other Event Organisers EOs on their activities.  If you like to meet some interest groups, again good to raise them here, so that they can contact you.

And if you need to know the latest updates on the Arabian nights, I am sure you can ask some of the committee members who may be coming to this gathering.  Of course, if you like to chat about the Thailand trips, let’s have a chat.  Any thing from fleamarts to it topics, to walks to cycling or potlucks, karaoke, etc. And favourites like retirement issues, investments, …..

Please register your interest to come here.  This will make the job easier for the organisers.

Strictly no discussions on politics, sex, race, religiion, direct selling and MLM.

We going to make it full of fun at the picnic day. Indicate here if you can make a kite and let fly it together. While we were young most may not have such an opportunity to fly a kite. So, let’s do it here.emoticon

April monthly gathering and future monthly gatherings

Dear members,

We are having difficulties getting members to run as EOs for the monthly gathering.  Juding from survey recently, the feedback indicates that most members would participate in the gatherings, if the activity or agenda is interesting.  But, at the same time, very few put up their hand to take the lead to do the monthly gatherings.

Perhaps, the time has come for the fixed regular monthly gatherings to be disbanded; and leave any monthly gathering to the initiatives of members.  When SHC was conceived, the platform to provide opportunities for SilverHairs to meet new friends was based on "Every one member has to organise one activity during the life of his/her membership".  However, this concept is difficult to follow through.  In fact, our feedback indicates that many members prefer to wait for someone else to organise activities, and they will participate only after all the hardwork has been done by the EOs/ECs.

Are we expecting too much from EOs?  Or should we relook at the concept and start looking at paying Event Organisers?  Maybe, this is another out of the box thinking.

Dear Members

This will be my 2nd time leading a monthly meeting.
First one was held in August 2009 3 months after I joined the first gathering (when I was still innocent and naive and took up the call of then CM Dolly Lim). This time it’s due to an enthusiastic voice calling "Frisna, I can’t be the EO for March, can you please help me?" I said "why don’t you try another person or inform the CM, maybe she can find the replacement" but she said "no  lah, i prefer to find the replacement myself" Voila, dear Audrey (a very friendly, helpful and responsible lady) here I am!

Date: 29 March 2012 (Thursday)
Time: 18.00 – 21.00
Place: Hans Cafe, PARK MALL #B1-03 (separate section just for SHC)
MRT: Dhoby Ghaut
Buses:  7,14,16,36,65,77,106,111,124,128,162,167,171,174,175,190,700,971E
+ others that stop along Clemenceau ave

But seriously …. are you serious?

Recent comments/postings have prompted me to put up this
post.

Regarding retirement in other (cheaper) countries:

Like many Silverhaired members, I was attracted by the
wonderful prospect of “doubling my retirement funds”. Imagine this – Take my Singapore
dollars, change them into ringgit or Thai Baht or Rupiahs, tah-dah, I have
twice/thrice the amount of money – to spend in these countries. I can buy a cheap(er)
property, employ a cheap(er) maid, eat cheap(er) food…. You get the idea –
living cost is a lot cheaper in these other countries.

What’s the catch?

WHAT’S THE CATCH????

Our neighbouring countries are “politically and economically
less stable”.

Yes – go ahead and have a good laugh. I have modified this
statement to be “politically correct”.

Yep – I don’t want the gahment OR other countries’ gahment
to hantum me.

But seriously – back to point one –

Several months ago, I tried to organize a day trip to recce
JB for retirement living.  The response
was quite dismal. Only four people put up their hands. The trip was
cancelled. These are the mistakes I have made –

MISTAKE NO. 1

I was misled by the NATO people.

People kept talking about “retiring in another (cheaper)
country”. Do they really want to do something about it? I guessed not. When the
opportunity arose for these people to check it out, only five people (including
me) were seriously interested.

MISTAKE NO. 2

I tried to draw a lively discussion on the (THAT) forum, by
inviting people to share their experiences on line. People were shy. If they
share their bad experiences, they feel embarrassed. If they share their good
experiences, they fear that they will draw unnecessary attention upon
themselves.

BUT – they did write to me privately – and I thank them –
thank you for sharing.

These pointers are gleaned from their personal feedback to
me (not in any particular order) –

The immigration ppl will play tricks on you; make you “do
naked squats”, will not stamp your passports…

Don’t show off your Rolex watches; don’t drive your
Singapore registered cars; don’t open your mouth to speak (they’ll know you are
Singaporean).

Live in “gated, and gurkha-guarded communities”.

“Live in” – literally. DO NOT leave your property
unattended. When you buy the property, live in it.

It is NOT a good idea to buy a property and then leave it
vacant.

To really have a good idea about how you will adapt to the
foreign country:

Rent a unit for one
year. Live in that country for one year. If you enjoy your stay, then you may
consider buying a property. BEFORE YOU DO – ensure that you know everything you
need to know about “foreigners buying a local property”. Ask for detail. If you
don’t understand a vague print, use a magnifying glass. DO NOT be intimidated
by legal jargon. You have the right to understand the terms in layman language.

Do not buy a foreign property for the purpose of renting it
out.  It is NOT easy to rent it out.

Do not buy a foreign property for use as a “vacation
home”.  DO NOT leave your house vacant.
Thieves will break in.

Some of us have already moved to JB, successfully. They say,
“Blend in, don’t stand out.”

Thus, you
will not see them waving a red banner with yellow print proclaiming, “We are
Singaporeans living in JB.”

End of their feedback.

Silverhairs members have toyed with the idea of retiring in
Chiang Mai, Yunnan, JB, Penang, Batam, Bandung…

The most important consideration – are you willing to leave
your family and friends in Singapore?

Even if the answer is vaguely “maybe….” I’d encourage you to spend a little more time to re-evaluate your
strategy.

That was all I wish to share with you.

I wish you all the best.

A regular SHC meeting point in the West, for retirees

I have been exploring the possibility of having other SHC regular gatherings outside the central area in Singapore.  Last week, I spoke with Vincent Khoo, who lives in Jurong East.  In general, since he is retired, and would also like to gather and coordinate SHC members together on a regular basis.

In general, I have some agreement and understanding on having a monthly gathering there at Jurong East, for those members who live in the West.  Key points are:

  • Place – Jurong East
  • Venue likely a food court.  This is being explored by Vincent. Food court Kopitiam, 2nd floor, IMM
  • Time – 10 am – 12nn or 2pm to 4pm, a weekday
  • Frequency – likely once a month
  • Date:  Fri 10 Feb 2012
  • Residents – those who are retired and live in the best.
  • Transport – MRT, Jurong East.
  • Food – As you would buy from the food court.
  • fees – there are no charges.
  • Topic – Vincent will lead.  But, participants can suggest topics.

Soon, I will announce the start of these gatherings.  Note:  The usual monthly gatherings for all members will still continue; although this one will be in the West for retired SHCians.

For your info, thoughts and comments.  If anyone has suggestions, and would like to lead in the East and North, please share your thoughts here.  This is to be a regular happening.  We will take it from here.

If you are living in the West, and would like to be part of this grouping, please register here.

Next year 2012, all SHC monthly gatherings will be scheduled

The SilverHairsClub monthly gathering is an important event and has become a feature of SHC.  As we have no physical club location, we make use of available venues in Singapore that meets our needs. This is a monthly event; and we hope that all members will make effort to attend this event, even though we may have little groups here and there.  It should meet the key objective of providing a platform for new and old members to meet up with one another, at a big venue.

We have not been very organised but I have noted suggestions from members to pre-schedule the monthly gatherings early.  So for 2012, we will pre-schedule the gatherings.  The biggest hurdle in not doing so, is the difficulty of finding last-minute Event Organisers EOs.

Generally, a monthly gathering should be conveniently located on the map; close to MRT stations.  Food should not be a priority; and members should be able to order food individually off the counter.  For reasons of I dont like hot food, the food is too oily, I have my dinner already, I just want a drink and the food price is too expensive, the location should be flexible to meet this requirement.  Food should not be a priority.  The EO is the only one who can make the decision re the venue and the date.  This will be done in consultation with the imcumbent Club Manager.

Somehow, I get the feeling that 90% of our active members are still working, so many can come after work; but we must not miss out those who have retired or have flexi-working hours.  Still, there are others that stay in Jurong, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Hougang and Changi.  And, more there are others, who still have grand children to look after, and may only be available on weekends.  Many, many, many factors.  But, let’s try.  So, the venue must be able to cater to changes in numbers (pax) too.

Other requirements for EO events are the personalised name tags, RED for new members and pre-registration of attendance.

I am glad we are likely to have a good start to this arrangement for 2012.  And, I am pleased also that a number of members, including new ones, have kindly and openly accepted being the EOs for the monthly gatherings in 2012.  You only need to do one EO activity for the whole of your membership.  I hope more members will do their share to contribute this task.  So, here goes.

  • Jan – Lily Ho
  • Feb – Janie Leong
  • Mar – Andrey Wong
  • Apr – Peter Lim
  • May – Dan Huang
  • Jun – Richard Wong
  • Jul –  Peri Liew
  • Aug – Victor Khor
  • Sep – Henry Foo
  • Oct – May Woo
  • Nov – Caroline Gee
  • Dec – Jane Tan

So for all EOs, please starting writing a few Posts, so that you are familiar with communicating with other members.  As an EO, this event is the best opportunity to know other members and for other members to know you.  Thank you very much; and I shall be in touch with you soon.

October Monthly Gathering

Dear Members,

I was hoping that someone will volunteer to organise this event but till now, no one had come forward.  Hence, I will probably have this meeting at Bra Cafe again.  I will finalise upon my return to SG on Oct 6 2011.

However, I am still keeping my fingers very crossed that some miracle will happen around Oct 3 to Oct 6 lor..

Cheers.. Dolly

August 26, Monthly Gathering – F & E

Hi Members,

Actually, I was thinking of ‘eating snake’ of not wanting to organise this monthly gathering 1 lor.. but I kena summon, so there shall b a monthly gathering in August after all… kekeke.. However, I would prefer this gathering is to be conducted in Free and Easy mode lor.. ie..

Since we are having d One Night in Chinatown – Mandarin event on Sept 10, 2011,  for our August monthly gathering, pls feel free to speak any dialects, be it Cantonese, Hokkien, Hainanese, Hakka, Khek, Teochew, Malay, Tamil, etc etc… Shiok rite… :)

Dialect not only adds to a rich and colorful Chinese cultural heritage, it links one to his/her roots.   SHC members have traveled widely, and become global citizens, yet it still feels great to come home to speak dialect freely, agree?

So, let’s get together and find out who your ‘ka ki nang’ is (???) – an excellent opportunity to link up your roots!

Date : Friday, August 26, 2011.

Time : 4.00 pm – 8.00 pm

Venue : Bra Cafe (or commonly known as MPH Cafe) @ Robinson Road

Cost : To be capped at $5 for 1 drink (coffee/tea/canned drink) with 1 pastry.  However, you can top up the difference should you prefer to change your drink or pastry for others.  NO OUTSIDE FOOD AND DRINK IS ALLOWED FOR THIS MEETING,  KIND UNDERSTANDING MUCH APPRECIATED.

Since this is to be F&E meeting, I would prefer not to set any agenda and we will talk talk and mingle freely to know more friends here.  I also hope that more new members will participate for this gathering also.  However, please feel free to throw ideas/comments/suggestions for any SHC event.   This monthly gathering is for SHC members only.  Please register your participation here as we will closed for registration once we reached 40paxs… NO GATECRASHER PLS!!!! AS THE CAFE CAN ONLY ACCOMMODATE THE SAID NUMBER OF PAXS LOR…

    August Monthly Gathering : Venue/Cost???

    Dear Members,

August is around the corner soon and so is the monthly gathering but I am still unable to proceed due to the following constraints:

    1.  No EO yet : Any volunteers?
    2. Venue : Cant find any suitable venues, eventhough there were 2 proposals for consideration which I am not too keen to pursue.  Sembawang Park which we can incorporate monthly gathering coupled with cycling event at 1 go and another cafe around the China Sq Central.  Any other venues some members may want to help to propose, pls let me know
    3. Cost : Both venues’ cost of food are on the high side, ie for Cafe (China Sq), 1 drink and quarter pie will cost ard $10/pax.  Negotiation by member to get them to reduce abit was not successful as they claimed higher operating cost and lean profit.  As for Sembawang Park, was told that it will be around $25 – $30/pax much depending on the total headcount as well as the foods that we wanted.  I am hoping to look at less than $10 – Any lobang for this – Pls share with us also.

The July monthly gathering at Sengkang Riverside Park was actually very nice whereby the ambience n the food are of reasonable price.  However, sad to say that we got complaints from the Cafe operator that we did not comply with their rules there.

I personally like to hold the monthly gathering at the Bra Cafe mainly cos it is nice & cosy place for fellowship which Pioneer and New members can communicate each other much easier.  Self introduction of the new members can also be easily heard by each and everyone in the cafe itself.  But the only setback is that, Bra Cafe is unable to accommodate more than 40paxs.

Hence, in the event that I am unable to get another new venue for the monthly gathering, I will have the monthly gathering at Bra Cafe with only max headcount of 40paxs.

So, let’s hear from all members concerned.  Al your comments are valuable to us….

    Cheers… Dolly

    Failure to verify SHC membership

    Hi everybody,

SilverHairsClub has a simple membership application process. So, sometimes, we have many Philip’s, Susan’s, etc.

Therefore, members should personally register to participate in activities, using their own login. However, sometimes a member may register on behalf of another member. If we are not sure, if a participant is a member, we will request the participant to contact admin@SilverHairsClub.com .

Some members feel this is a chore and will reduce or affect new membership application, if we make the process more complicated.

I hope members will understand tracking membership is not an easy job, considering the process is simple.

SilverHairsClub will continue with this simple membership process. At the same time, members who bring participants into activities, and refuse to get unverified names checked, will now be taken off our membership. There will be no reminder, as request to contact admin will be published on this forum.

If you are one of those affected by the above, please take steps to follow up quickly. Fairy godmother is very angry.

Thur Jul 14, 2011 Monthly Gathering at Riverside

"The aim of the monthly gathering is to enable social networking among SHCians, for new and old SilverHairs to meet one another." – Terence Seah

    Hi, Members!

For our July gathering, let’s come away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown city area and meet outdoors at the Sengkang Riverside Park to play kampung games, and fly kite.  Mushroom Cafe in the Park has no walls; it opens out to the rolling landscaped greenery by the Punggol River.

Many of you enjoyed "March 2011 Walk – Sengkang Riverside PCN" on March 12 this year.  Freda Lim liked its "country-like scenery"! If you can, do come early to take in a brief walk among the trails, and the panoramic view from the hillock.

On the agenda is "kampung games" like gasing, chapteh, hopscotch, five stones, marbles, red seeds, skipping rope, paper ball, hantam bola, fighting spiders, kite-flying, etc.  Many of you remembered these games that we used to play in the old days (Read Rosalind Lee’s post "Reminiscenses of the good old days" Feb 10, 2010).  If you have these games or other games, do bring along and we’ll have fun replaying them.

If you wish, can stay after 9.30 pm for line-dancing.  Some of the popular pieces: Electric Slide, Chilli ChaCha, Come Dance With Me, Cowboy Motion, Honky Tonk Stomp, Stroll Along ChaCha.

    • Date : Thursday, July 14, 2011
    • Time : 5 pm – 9.30 pm
    • Place : Mushroom Cafe in the Park, Sengkang Riverside Park, Anchorvale Street

How to get there by LRT : Arrive at Sengkang MRT. Ride the LRT to Farmway Station (2 stops from Sengkang MRT).  Walk 5 mins towards Punggol River. Cross the bridge and walk towards the Cafe with the ‘big red mushroom’ signboard.  There is no bus service along Anchorvale Street.

Bicycle – accessible from Hougang (via PCN), Rivervale, Compassvale, Anchorvale, Fernvale

    Program :

    1. Registration and Introduction of SHC members and new members
    2. Fellowship and interaction
    3. Kampung games  (Bring picnic mats/foldable chairs)
    4. Kite flying  (I hope there’s a good wind on that day)
    5. Line-dancing after 9.30 pm (Bring your preferred music/player)
    6. Discussion – next monthly gathering
    7. Any other matters

Please note this gathering is for members only.   If your friends wish to join in, they are welcome to first sign up as members.  Also, do have on your nametag when you arrive; this will greatly facilitate introduction. Its okay if you don’t have one – a sticky label will be made for you.  Thank you all for your cooperation.

July 14 is the night before full moon.  Come meet up at Riverside!  See you there!    emoticon
