Monthly Walk: 12th April (Sat) PipeLine Ramble I

Leaders:
Jeffrey Lim & ChristinaCL Chan

Date:    12
April 2008

(Saturday)

Trail:    PipeLine
Ramble I

from Outram Park mrt / Pearl’s Hill ending at Farrer Road (Holland Road/Queensway)

Start Time: we shall start the walk at 4.00pm sharp! Do plan to arrive punctually.

Duration: approx 3 hours.

Meeting Point: MRT Station: Outram, Street Level. (East/West Line exit along Outram Road, not the NE line exit).

"Most
of you would know that a water pipeline runs from Johor to
Singapore but have anybody thought to trace
the route?
I was told
for robust walkers, the entire trail of approx 21 km will take approx 8 to
9hours!emoticon

For us, “leisure
walkers”, this exciting, challenging trail will be introduced in 3 separate
segments.  Each part of the route has a
different terrain and each opens up a part of
Singapore seldom seen.

The 1st
segment shall be from
Pearl‘s Hill to Farrer Road, approx 7 km.

With a good
pace, it could be covered in approx 3 hours; hence, the need to start off
punctually!

The terrain
is
undulating – ups and downs but not much
steps.  It is not the “usual walk in the
park”; it is exploratory; think of it as a Mini Trek! There will be some rough
sections.

This 1st
segment will end at
Farrer Road (near to Holland Road/Queensway,
not Bukit Timah).

As usual we
shall end the walk by having dinner and more fellowship together .  emoticon

However, the renovation
works of the nearby food centre might be still on-going.

Suggest to
dine at a nearby restaurant which h
as good food at quite reasonable cost —

Westlake
Restaurant,
Blk
4 Queen’s Road  #02-139,
Singapore 260004, prior reservation
might be necessary.

Register
here. (Do indicate whether you wish to join us for dinner at
Westlake).

Note: Buses plying along Farrer Road: 93, 153, 165, 174, 186, 855 and 961 (check it out!)

Till then,

  • Update & 2nd Call – Kelong Trip to Registrants (19/20 April)

     Hi, all:

I have been in touch with Hotboys Kelong and am pleased to say that the closing date for payments to be made towards the kelong trip has been extended to 31 March 2008, or when the seating capacities of each coach minibus is taken up. (As stated in my earler post no. 1473)

I should also mention that there is a possibilty that groups other than SHC who confirm their trips before us may get the limited coach/minibus seats. This means we may have to seek other means of land transport, or could be left without land transport.

For this reason, I have to ask all who intend making the trip and require land transport not to put off payment to the last minute, but to make your payments early as you are able. Those who withdrew earlier may rejoin if conditions are more favourable now.

Also, the following individuals have still not responded to my earlier post re their intentions (going or not going) and whether they need land transport to and from Tanjong Leman Jetty, etc, with regards to to my post no. 1473 (Update on Kelong Trip (19/20 April 2008):

    1. Chian Wah
    2. Vincent Wong (withdrawn 8/3)
    3. Jimmy Chew
    4. Sally Chew
    5. Alfred Ang
    6. Margie Koh

To avoid confusion, I have closed this thread from comments. If you wish to write anything in connection with the above, please do so at Post No. 1473: Update on Kelong Trip (19/20 April 2008 –  (https://silverhairsclub.com/2008/02/1473).

Thank you, and have a nice day.

Update on Kelong Trip (19/20 April 2008)

    Hi, kelong kakis :   emoticon

In a few days, Terence will let us know the bank account number to which we will be able to make our payments towards the kelong trip on 19/20 April 2008.

At the moment, 63 people have registered for the trip. The coach to/from Tg Leman Jetty is able to carry only 40 passengers, which means 23 people will have to find alternative land transport. We can hire smaller vehicles for 10 to 12 persons, but the cost per person is higher. I also believe some of you may prefer to drive up on your own, or are able to ‘tumpang’ others who are driving up.

Could those who have registered for the trip please indicate (by posting a comment here)  whether you need land transport to/from Tg. Leman Jetty, or whether you will be making the trip with your own transport?

We will be collecting S$100 per person who require land (coach, minibus) transport, and S$75 for those who are driving up or have buddies to ‘tumpang’ them.

We hope that this amount is enough to pay for the cost for the trip. Any money collected in excess will be refunded. In the unlikely event that the amount collected is insufficient, we trust that those going will not mind topping up the difference.

The S$100 will cover the cost of :  emoticon

    • Transport by coach/minibus to & from Tg Leman Jetty;
    • Entrance fee to the Tg. Leman Jetty;
    • Stay at the Hotboys Kelong (including meals)

Meanwhile, Zen of Hotboys Kelong has provided the following clarifications to the questions some of you raised:

    Beds   emoticon

Bunk beds will be provided, with mattresses, etc.

    Toilet Facilities   emoticon

Let’s just say that the facilities are the type where denizens of the deep will be waiting to consume – directly – what the human body rejects.

    First Aid Kits   emoticon

Basic First Aid kits will be available

    Drinks   emoticon

Free flow of coffee, tea and drinking water will be provided

    Sea Transport  (safety)   emoticon

I have been assured that life jackets will be available. The boats used are safe, in good condition and will not be overloaded.

Cost of Optional Activities, Purchases and Rentals   emoticon

A limited number of fishing rods and hand lines will be available for rent.

Fishing hooks, sinkers, lines, etc will be available for sale.

While activities such as mahjong, carrom, island hopping, etc are provided at no additional cost, a number of optional activities have to be paid for.

Please note that the S$100 / S$75 each person pays does not include the cost of such optional rentals / purchases / activities.

You may want to familarise yourselves with the kelong and its optional rentals / purchase / activities by visiting http://www.kelongfishing.com/index.asp.

    Travel Insurance   emoticon

Those requiring travel insurance are advised to purchase the insurance on their own.

    Terence :   emoticon

Could you handle the collection and keeping track (who is paying and for whom) of payments, or assign someone else to manage this aspect of the trip?

    Thanks.

List of Registrants for Kelong Trip on 19 – 20 April 2008

    Hi, Gang:

Apart from some former colleagues and pre-SHCian friends who have joined SHC, I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting any of you. I find it a little odd, being new to SHC and all, but I did agree to help Terence with the organisation of the Kelong Trip.  So here I am, you got me, for better or worse. :o)

I had a bit of bother compiling the list as not everyone registered on the same thread, and a few registered more than once on different threads. As far as I can make out from the two threads that I know of, the #33 people listed below have registered for the trip.

If I have inadvertently left anyone out, spelled your name wrongly (blame it on feeble eyesight) or there are others who have not yet done so but wish to register for the trip, please let me know as soon as you are able.

If there are more than 42 people wanting to go, we will have to work something out

    Thanks and best regards,

    Ron Koh

    Lawn bowling

Just what is this game anyway?

The game of Lawn Bowls is played on a large, rectangular, precisely leveled and manicured grass or synthetic surface known as bowling green which is divided into parallel playing strips called rinks.

The general object of the game is for participants to roll each of their BOWLS as close as possible to a single small white ball called the JACK (or kitty). Bowls may hit the jack, but the jack must remain within the boundary markers or the END will be declared "dead." Bowls are likely to hit other bowls, and may propel them into a position that is perhaps nearer to the jack, or perhaps to a distant position outside the boundary marker line that will take them out of play.

Games are played between opposing teams, each with from one to four players. SINGLES games are played between two players, DOUBLES between two pairs, TRIPLES between teams of three, and rinks between teams of four players.

After all members of each team have rolled a set of bowls (the completion of an END), the bowl closest to the jack counts one point for its team, and every other bowl belonging to that same team that is closer to the jack than the nearest one of the competitors’ counts 1 additional point. Game is made up of a series of these completed ends.

Each BOWLER has a matching set of four bowls. Each bowl in a set has a matching pair of distinguishing decorations on opposite sides. The number of bowls that each player uses is dependent on the number of team members. Bowls are not perfectly spherical, and will not roll straight. One side is slightly flattened, and it is toward that side with its BIAS that will draw the path of the bowl in a sweeping arc. The mastery of this phenomenon is at the heart of the challenge and excitement of the game.

What can we do for you?

    1. We’ll tell you about the game.

Lawn Bowling has its roots in antiquity and has been played where English is spoken since the l3th century. There are over 130 Clubs in the United States and thousands more around the world. We are mostly amateurs and we bowl for the fun of it.

    2. We’ll meet you at the Green.

After you’ve rolled that first bowl you’ll know why lawn bowlers love the sport. You too can become addicted to the sport of the ages. Just contact me (Chin) at h/p nos 98797949 if you are interested.

    3. Training lessons are free.

Our trained instructors will soon have you bowling on the green.

    4. Low cost for a lifetime of enjoyment

A set of four bowls costs about the same as a good tennis racket or one of the better golf clubs and will last as long as you want it to. The club probably has some second hand bowls for sale.

    Here’s a dream for 18 – 25 Nov 2008 (Camping North Thailand)

As you all know by now, I spend almost all my weekends in Thailand.  And, over the Christmas period, I travelled one week to Chiangmai and Mae Hong Son.  Temperatures were 5 – 18C, lower if you are up there in the mountain tops.  Visited the National Parks & resorts, enjoyed the fresh air, dry season, mists, mountain views, rivers and reservoirs, and nice people.

A number of Singaporeans enjoy great holidays in 5 star hotels and fabulous buffets.  For a change, I like to share with you another type of holidays.  Camping and tenting in the mountain and national parks of Thailand’s north.  No hotels to stay.  Clean and safe, with toilets (no hot water) and good roads.  Two persons in a 4 persons tent.  Enjoy the scenery and air.  Eat only fresh vegetables from breakfast to dinner.

Two years ago, a few of us including Oi Cheng and Ann Giri went up to the above described places.  We enjoyed it, because there was no shopping.

This year, I am pretty determined to organise something bigger for SHC members only.  Fly Singapore/Chiangmai, arrive at 6am at Chiangmai airport.  And, immediately whisked to the mountain resorts.  Hopefully, the return flight will cost us $180.  There are no hotels to book, I suggest you start to look for a 2 – 4 person tent (costing around $40 – 50) and share.  For tent mates, make sure you find acceptable snoring partners.  Sound travels far at night, even in different tents.

Food and fruits, we share, cannot cost a bomb.  If we cannot cook, I might look for a local cook to travel with us.  And, last depending on numbers, we will travel in 10-11 seater vans.  We share cost of transportation.

For those who loves cycling, walking, fresh air, quiet surroundings, waterfalls, and consider.  And, we will be comfortable, have fun and safe.  Even, if the trip is just to chat among friends, consider join this trip.  The date Tue 18 – Tue 25 Nov 2008.  Your thoughts?

Here are the list of dreamers.  The ones who wants to see the stars, be a veg for a week, bathe in cold water, wants fresh air, and a comfortable tent.  This list is tentative until 31 Aug 2008.

    2008 Monthly Walk – Jan

Bishan Park and Lower Pierce Walk
    12th Jan 2008, Saturday, 4.30pm
Meeting place:  Bishan MRT , next to  Taxi/ Bus stop

From meeting place, we take a 7-minutes walk to Bishan Park . Walk through  Bishan Park 1, then  cross Marymount Road to Bishan Park 2 , after which we cross over Upper Thomson Road to Lower Pierce Reservoir .

Bishan Park is a matured park. Along the way we visit a small vegetable & spice garden , a beautiful lotus pond, and view a variety of flowering trees, shrubs and palms amidst ponds with Chinese style bridges. For dog  lovers there is  a dog run enclosure where the pets are let loose. See roller blading ring and visit  Aramsa, Singapore first garden spa. Identify the source of our famous Kallang River.

Toilets,  rest benches and rain shelters are easily available along the way .There is also a nice cafe near the big pond .

At Lower Pierce, enjoy the magnificent reservoir view and perhaps meet some real monkies and marvel at the cute babies hanging onto their mothers. We take the board walk by the waterside  and follow a short trail into the forest before  emerging at our destination the famous Casuarina Roti Prata  Café .

Total distance is about 6 kilometres and takes about 2 hours including rest breaks.

    Remember your 1st step?

    Remember your first step?  emoticon

What a fuss everyone made then!  you continued to walk right on through
childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, but somewhere along the way, like
most adults, you probably stopped walking so much.

In fact, the percentage of adults who spent most of their
    day sitting increased.  Sedentary
lifestyles have been held partially responsible for the excessive poundage.  hahahaha

    Walking
is one of the easiest, least expensive, most enjoyable, and most profitable
    forms of exercise.

    All you need is ….

A pair of comfortable walking shoes

Socks to keep your feet dryer and blister
    free

Comfortable clothing – dress for the
    weather

    A small bottle of water

Add a hat, suncreen and sunglasses on a
    sunny day.
    and desire ….

Suffice to say that walking is certainly good! Many SHCians
had enjoyed the walks and made new friends….
if I continued, there’d be no time for you to start walking!

Monthly walks for SHCians are on Every 2nd Saturday of
the Month, once scheduled; Rain or Shine we Will be there!     emoticon

Thunder & lightning, we shall all, take cover, somewhere
    in the vicinity to fellowship.

1st quarter of 2008, there will be 2 walks –

    12Jan – Bishan Park & Lower
    Pierce

09Feb – Gong Xi Gong Xi     (family
    and friends “visitation walks”)

    08Mar – Bedok Reservoir  (tentative)

**A week or 2 before each scheduled walk, relevant details
will be posted in SHC’s website.

Greetings fm the team – Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary
    Tan and ChristinaCL Chan

           We wish each of
    you a

            Wonderfully
Blessed Christmas of Love, Joy & Peace and

             a Prosperous
2008 of Divine Health and Great Harvest!

April 2008 – Our fishing time on a kelong

Now, thinking ahead, with all good ideas from SHCians, and flowing in before 31 Dec 2007, we have now scheduled a day fishing trip to a kelong on Sat, 19 April 2008.

And, for those who love fishing ikan with reel and line, like eating fish porridge with kanna, chye poh, kiam chye, play cards or mahjong until the wee hours of the morning, coffee round the clock and able to sleep on wooden planks,  with rats and cockcroaches running around, you can also stay overnight on the kelong.

Let the fresh sea breeze flow past your face, enjoy the quiet away from the city, and have a chat, a long chat, with fellow SilverHairs over the weekend.

If you are prone to sea sickness, we shall prepare some cough mixture for you.  They are proven to calm you down.  In April, the seas are calm too.

However, only the date is finalised.  The place has not been found.  I found a classified travel advertisement in the Straits Times, spoke with them, and found the program interesting.   Haven’t got an Event Organiser to raise her/his hand yet.  But, the gathering is ON.  So, keep this date in your diary.

Please click on this website.  Estimate cost for 2D 1N: SGD 100, inclusive of transport from a Singapore MRT, meals on the kelong.  Have a look and see if you like it.  If you like it, we go for it.  We will limit to 42 pax only, to suit one bus.

Strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Here is an earlier POST for those interested in fishing.

    Golf in Perth

    Hi All

Today I went to play golf at SupaGolf in Swan Valley using large clubsand had lunch afterwards. Cost of lunch was very reasonable. It was my 1st visit to the place and then we stopped at Margaret River Chocolate Factory to buy fudge, jam and pickles. There’s no need to travel down to Margaret River region to do so.

So those interested in golf, I can help to arrange  a game, even coaching with a golf pro, if you wish.

    Regards

    Joan (Perth)

Meet up at Changi Beach Club, Sun 16 Dec 2007

Usually, I dont spend much time in Singapore.  And when I do, I like to find a place to relax.  On this coming Sun, 16 Dec 2007, I am planning to go to the Changi Beach Club.  It has a nice Olympic size pool, and a great facing to Pulau Ubin.  Moons ago, I use to see submarines, with their scopes, swimming left and right below the water.  Better still, the CBC members do not come in on a Sunday morning, so it’s quiet and relaxing.  We can have a good chat, under the morning sun.

You are invited to come.  Just bring your own nasi lemak and coffee.  The F&B don’t usually have food so early in the morning. And, they dont usually allow to, so we have to be discreet, no potluck.

If you like to come, just add your name here.  Come anytime between 0800 and 1300 hrs.  No formalities, just bring your trunks or costumes, googles and suntan lotion.  You can take a bus to Changi Village, and have a slow walk in along the boardwalk.  Watch out for the dolphins though.

Monthly walk: 13th October 2007, Culmination

    Greetings to all SHC members,

Our monthly walks for 2007 were conducted on the 2nd Saturday of each month, except February. It has been our pleasure to share some new as well as challenging routes this year.  We are delighted that many of you have enjoyed these trails.

As year end draws nearer by the day, let’s culminate this year’s monthly walks with yet another nostaligic walk, a journey through time, perhaps.

Majestic trees are the natural heritage of our Island.  They serves as important green landmarks of our Tropical Garden city.  Some trees take more than hundreds of years to mature.  The world’s largest rainforest is in the Amazon River basin, BUT the oldest rainforests are found in Singapore! and Malaysia.

That’s ,,, our Botanic Gardens! a dynamic and living monument.  The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859.  It has come a long way evolving into a leading equatorial botanic garden of 52 hectares.  Today, the Gardens, which is more than a hundred-years old is a "star" visitors’ attraction!

It seems like yesterday, our walk at the Singapore Botanic Gardens but, as I scrolled through the past walks, it was rather a long way back…..Sept06.  Some had then, requested to take the trail again. Though many months late, here it is, to fulfill certain wish!

Come, Be Enchanted by our Gardens…..’lights off’ at midnight.  emoticon
