Using email addresses collected from members for spam mails

Hi everbody,

Very often, email addresses are exchanged during social get-togethers.  Sometimes, invitations are sent out from one member to another member or group.  Sometimes, members display their email addresses on the forum.  As a result, a big list of emails can be collected over time.

Members who wish to send unsolicited emails, please do ask for permission from the members first.  It is not nice to send unsolicited emails.  For complaints, please respect the receiver’s request.

If you have a joke or story to tell, you may do so over this forum, thus reducing the number of complaints from members, especially when there are multiple responses.

Thank you.

Another Pioneer Member Gone – Roger Lim Leong Hoo

Hi All SHC Members,

I got a SMS today informing me that one of pioneer member, Mr Roger Lim had passed away due to heart attack at age of 55.

From what I gathered, Roger was once a very active member in Y2008 to Y2009.  He had contributed many valuable comments on topics related to stock, investment, shares and trading.  He also participated in the monthly walks and even attended the 3rd SHC D&D organised by Francis M.  I believed there should be much more about him which some of you might had known.

For those who wish to pay Roger the last respect, I was told by his family members that they are only planning to have a 2-days wake (ie 25/10 & 26/10) and funeral scheduled to be on 27/10 Thurs at 5.15pm.

Roger’s wake is located at Block 94A, Whampoa Drive.

Those going and need further contact of Roger’s family member, pls write to my email dlgummy@hotmail.com or post your comments here and I will liaise with you directly.

Best regards,
Dolly

Other events in the coming months

After the Hokkien Karaoke event, I hope to see other events coming up.  For those who are planning to be EOs of this event, you may also approach Dolly Lim or other senior SHC members for assistance.

I hope that the Canton event will take place next month.  The year end is coming; so do think about Christmas and year-end get-togethers.  Also, a New Year’s eve or New year event.  If you have a big bonus, maybe a generous one will work too.  I am out of Singapore during Dec and Jan, so I am unable to join any activity.

Chinese New Year comes early next year, so if we have a CNY lunch, this will be a good idea too.  Hope someone picks this up and raise his/her hand.

Little parties here and there.  Yes, many of you have made friends, so I would think you would have little parties here and there.  I can only say, have fun!

If you have ideas or suggestions, toss them up in the air for all of us to read.

Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub on its 6th Birthday, Oct 2011

SilverHairsClub started in Oct 2005.  With some friends, we conceived the idea of a social group for Singaporeans, over 45.  The idea was to develop a small group of friends whom we could enjoy our time through the years.  However, being novices in this area, the original group of founders were not sure of its success; but we decided to build it on a small scale, step by step.  To keep it as a platform for SilverHairs to meet other SilverHairs, we adopted a few taboos, more because we did not know how to manage these discussions.

While SilverHairsClub is seen as a blog or forum, it is now very much a Club for members to meet and interact with one another.  SilverHairsClub is both virtual and online; and yet it functions as a Club where members meet.  SilverHairsClub.com serves as a focal point for sharing and interaction.  A place where members get together to organise events, chat about this and that, and knowing other members with similar likes and dislikes.

SHC has undergone some small changes over the years.  In the coming months, I hope to see a bigger platform where members can get to meet new and more members.  On the ownership of SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com, I have made the  move to transit it from an individual ownership (myself) to SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  Hopefully, this will receive better recognition and acceptance within the Singapore community.

So, this month is our 6th anniversary, or our 6th birthday.  I hope you will celebrate this birthday occasion with other fellow SHCians.  Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub.

SHC Golf Group

Dear Members     emoticon

The golf session EOed by Raymond Tang last night at Seletar Country Club (SCC) was well received.  17 members turned up which include both novice as well as ‘pro’.  From this session, a new SHC Golf Group was "officially" formed and the following subjects were discussed and decided upon :

  1. There will be weekly golf session to be held at SCC – Driving Range.
  2. This weekly session on Wednesday will commence at 7 pm onwards.
  3. Coaching will be provided by Raymond Tang (plus supplementary coaching by SCC in-house coach).
  4. Fees payable @ $10 per session per person will include coaching, free use of available golf clubs and 40 golf balls per person.
  5. Fees to be paid by ATM transfer directly to Raymond Tang’s account.  (DBS autosave account # 0190 1476 81.)
  6. The group extend its invitation to other SHC members to join our weekly session.
  7. Lily Ho (non-player) will help provide admin support for this group.

The SHC regular golfer can support the beginner by paying $5 for 80 balls (outsider price $.06 cts) with no coaching.

Those interested to learn, or simply to enjoy the company of other players, and at the same time have some exercise or practice, are welcome to join.     Please register your interest in the comments here.     emoticon

Introduction of Corporate membership to the SilverHairsClub wef 15 Oct 2011

Since Oct 2005, the SilverHairsClub has only accepted individual membership. This means that only individuals or couples over the age of 45 can join in an individual capacity.  Although they may be working for a company, they cannot represent the company or participate in SHC activities on a corporate level.

WEF 15 Oct 2011, we will accept corporate memberships.

  1. Members joining SHC as a corporate member will have their name displayed with their company name displayed beside their name.
  2. Corporate memberships can only be respresented by a person or any number of persons who is 45 years and above.
  3. The rules specifying no discussion on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM will apply.
  4. Advertising is not automatically permitted on the SilverHairsClub forum.  However, if the corporate member wishes to advertise, they may write to admin@SilverHairsClub.com.
  5. Until end Dec 2011, corporate memberships are free. So, if you would also like to represent your company, it is best to do so now.  A joining fee will be implemented on/from 1 Jan 2012.
  6. All corporate members must write an introduction of the company they represent.  As long as it clearly tells what the company is doing, the introduction will be accepted. It is important you state your position in the company.
  7. Corporate members are allowed to invite members to their functions, participate in promotional and marketing events.  However, advertising or promotions on the forum is not permitted.

To join, please write to admin@silverhairsclub.com.

I hope that corporate memberships will improve and enhance the objective of providing a platform for SilverHairs, over 45 to meet new and more friends.  Hopefully, other advantages and benefits will follow.  It is all up to us as members, as we develop the club’s culture along the way.

Are we keeping up with the times?

Almost every single event we have is related to the 50s, 60s and 70s.  When we were young, our parents just could not understand the songs we were listening to.  They were either too hippy, hot, pop or simply romantic or sentimental.

Can we enjoy all the evergreens and classics , and yet keep in step with our children and grandchildren?  I am worried about being out-of-date.  Remember, we use to talk about generation gap.

Well, I play you a song.  It’s the latest craze, all about Cody Simpson, the 15 year old boy whom every teenager boy or girl is talking about.

Should we keep in step?  Should we have some really hot events?

Terence Seah

Write your minds, share your thoughts – other ideas

SilverHairsClub is your club; for members who are 45 years and over.  You can share your thoughts with other members to find better value for your money.

For example, you can pool buying.  And assuming, you are looking to buy, say, an IPAD3.  And, you have discussed with Apple that if you can get 20 buyers, you would be able to get a 15% discount.  Please feel free to write a new Post, find out who’s interested, and when you reach 20, you can get these interested buyers to buy an IPAD3 together.  Obviously, the discount has to be good to attract fellow members.  This is only an example.  But, do not use this as an advertising platform.

Another example, you want to join a SPA but you need 4 people to get an "out of this world" discount.  Sure, go ahead and share with other ladies your idea.  Do remember there are  cheats around.  Again, this must not be an advertising for the company.  You can discuss with fellow members via email too.

Feel free to discuss comparative prices of NTUC, Tops, Cold Storage and Seng Shiong stores for products like chicken, milk, bread, plums, eggs, etc.  If you start this comparison, please remember to keep track of the Post and not leave it dangling.  This will encourage other members to regularly give their feedback, even monthly.

It’s ok to compare insurances which are essential to us, especially as we get older.  Only thing is to avoid getting into direct selling.

Feel free to get into this if you are comfortable doing so.

Terence Seah

Life’s Little Mysteries

He ‘lived his life on his own terms’ *
So brilliant was his mind – a latter-day genius,
So successful, so rich, the world’s adulation received he,
But he could not control his pancreas,
Neither could the best doctors in the world.
He died young – in his fifties.
Why? Why? When the poor and the needy sick
are still alive at eighties and nineties?

Travelling on the cheap! Feb 3 – 5, 2012

Hi guys!

It’s time to look at travelling for next year: And this post is inspired by the new Expedia.com.sg site in today’s newspaper. Yes, there are dozens of offers to all destinations with Air Asia… including my favourite: Thailand!

Please log in to the site within the next five days (till 9th October) and get special packages with hotel and flight.

I’m looking at going to Chiang Mai in February 2012 for the Flower Festival (Feb 3 – 5) which will feature dazzling flower displays, parades and beauty contests: a great photo/video opportunity! Besides, there’s all the food, craft shopping, sightseeing, etc, etc.

On checking the website, the offers for a five night stay (Feb 3 – 8) can be as low as S$280 per person twin-sharing. This includes flight, hotel and breakfast at a good tourist-class hotel.

So, if any of you are keen please register your interest and I’ll come back with details and recommendations. This is not a guided tour package and I will only help co-ordinate the trip if there are enough SHC members wanting to go.

Familiarity Breeds Friendship: Not Contempt.

Hi Terence & fellow SHCians,

We all bunched together in the name of friendship to share identical interests and hobbies and to fill up some perceived voids in our lives.  Many of us have working married children who do not need us anymore. So it is all the more pertinent to start smiling at and speaking to fellow SHCians participating in the same social event of the time.  In being forthcoming on befriending others, we are rewarded with their friendships.  Somehow I got to know a couple of people on my first SHC walk and at the recent dance party at the Kovan Paya Lebar Community Club.  At the dance party like my first walk participation, I wasn’t acquainted with anybody.

Cheers,

Terry Tang

  • As usual, we meet @ 4pm : ECP Marina Cove MacDonald (inside)
  • Proceed to bike rental kiosk @ 4.30pm

    Monthly walks: Q4 updates

    Quote:
Reviews suggest that walking just 30 minutes per day, a few days a week is enough to moderately increase overall bone density.
Those who walked 30 minutes each day had a significantly lower risk of premature death than those who rarely exercised.
Walking is a natural form of movement and, unlike high impact exercise, does not place excess stress on the joints and boosts bone strength.

Low risk and easy to start….Walking may just be the key to achieving fitness.
Let’s swing! at least your arms and stay on track!      emoticon

Developing a SilverHairsClub band and singers team

Edwin Chen (Uncle ED) has offered to develop and train a team of singers who can sync with him during live singing sessions.  He is a one-man band; and I am looking at opportunities of having him and a team of singers perform during some of our concerts, talentime and other music & dance activities.

While Edwin has other activities, I am hoping to have this program developed as a SHC project.  If you are interested in being a singer with Edwin, please do send me your singing resume via email terences@SilverHairsClub.com.  Number of participants limited to 4.  Selected candidates will be interviewed sometime next month.

    The requirements are:

    1. Has been active in SilverHairsClub for at least one year.
    2. Has sung or performed in singing activities, inside or outside of SHC.
    3. Able to undergo training and practices during noon to late afternoons, initially on weekdays.

I believe that more than 40% of Singaporeans can speak or understand Hokkien! Sat Oct 22, 2011

The only two places in Asia where I enjoy listening to Hokkien songs and singing are Malaysia and Taiwan.  Perhaps, Taiwan Formosa television has made Hokkien songs popular in Singapore with the Taiwanese soap operas.

I am not fluent in Hokkien; but like many of us, we enjoy listening to the songs.  A week in Bangkok, and I already missed my favourite Taiwanese "LOVE" drama.  To share with you, I am having a headache, because I have not been able to find a Club Manager to replace Dolly Lim in the new year 2012.  Music and songs and dancing are a great relief when it comes to solving headaches problems.  Of course, the other headaches are the consequences affecting us, as a result of the going-ons in Europe and the US.

So, I was thinking of having a Karaoke event, during the week of Oct 24.  The event will have a simple buffet, sit down, aircon pl;ace and we can sing, listen, enjoy each others’ company, and get to know one another.

But, really, I think we should stay focused, and not have multiple dialects or languages.  All songs will be in Hokkien only, single, duet or group.  And, to qualify as as "Karaoke" participant, as long as you like Hokkien songs, can sing of the screen and entertain fellow members when they eat and chat or dance, you can participate as a singer.

But, I dont have a place or the date yet.  Next week, I am back in Singapore, and we shall finalise the place and date.  Some of you are eager to be an EO.  Would you like to try as an EO?  I shall invite you for lunch or dinner at the place I have in mind.  This event is ON and confirmed.

    Update:

    • Venue:  Oxford Hotel, 218 Queens Street, (2 mins walk from Bras Basah circle line or 10 mins walk from Bugis MRT).

    Take Care

Here is an information for our cyclist and rich members who lives in expensive condos.

In a BBC report today. ‘ Edinburgh University scientists found minuscule particles produced by burning diesel can increase the chance of blood clots forming in arteries.

The blood clots can then lead to heart attacks or stroke.’

So cycling or running on the road in heavy traffic may not be a good idea. Also those of you rich people living in Condos, the monthly mosquito fumigation is basically spraying diesel fumes in your estate.
