Encouraging more men to join SHC

I can really get excited over anything.  Some of you do know that I have always wanted to increase the male population of SilverHairsClub.  I can only say we have been moderately successful.  When I ask around for assistance, the response is "This is very normal iin all social functions in Singapore.  There will always be more ladies than men."  This Post may be provocative, but I think this is a serious issue that require some attention.  emoticon

There can be many reasons.

1.  The women are very domineering, and this frightens off the men.  As such, men dare  not participate, better let the ladies take the lead.

2.  The activities tend to dwell on the social side.  Ladies tend to gather in groups, leaving out the men.  Men prefers to just laze around, watch TV, have a cup of coffee and just watch or just stay at home.

3.  Men still like men activities.

So, let’s not give up the idea of bringing more men into SHC.  Maybe more men should think of more men activities.  This is an exciting topic.  Share your thoughts; but let’s not blast the manly views.  We need to encourage more men to join SHC.  emoticon

Yunnan & Fujian Trip

hi folks,

just a note to mention that I still have few trips a year to yunnan; for this year April, June and October months.

I am also doing a trip to Fujian and the neighboring taiwan island called Kinsmen Island sometime this year.

Do let me know if you are interested, so that i can give you some proposed itinerary for specific months and season. Or post your queries.

emoticonI am looking for eco free and easy travelers and travelers with interest in business opportunities and community development.

Looking forward to the year 2011

SilverHairsClub has been very successful, in terms of membership and participation.  I think SHC has been an excellent platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends; and obviously I like to see it continue many years into the future.

SHC has many dedicated leaders and many supporters to the same objective.  Take our walking leaders Christina, Charles and Jeffrey.  Then, the never say die cycling EO Yew Kwong.  Their events have been going on for years.  Take Susan Chan, with her dedicatioin to bring in likeminded friends to SHC.  Newer members like Sam Goh with SHC always on hs mind.  Then, there is missing Dolly.

Oh, there are many strong supporters in SHC.  Dan, Ah Nee, Susan, Molly.  JuneL, appearing only on TGIF.  RonW, Dennis, JohnH.  The quieter Ann, Sophia, Mary, ….  As you can see the numbers keep stretching.  SHC runs very much on its own, with EOs and ECs popping up everytime and anytime.  We have been trying to get a Club Manager to keep the club vibrant.  Yeap, a few names surfaced; but many felt the current system works well.  A bit disorganised, not much of a system, but something which I too like.  Very often, we try to be organised; altho I think some disorganisation is great for our minds.  So, as you can see, SHC is just fantastic, and we should not let it slip.

Some of you know I am planning to send my son, accompanied by my wife, to study in Perth next year.  It will be a fact that I will have little time in Singapore.  And of course, little if not no time for SHC.  We therefore need to think of how to let SHC continue, without letting it slip.  You will be surprised that there are more members than you know or have seen in SHC.  Perhaps, they are shy, or waiting to join us some days in the activities.  I will still continue to particpate, on a limited time.  In fact, I have a time line of end Dec 2010.

If you can do some thing for SHC, speak up.  Tell us how you would be able to lead SHC to the next level.  Let’s give ourselves early June 2010 to decide how we can proceed.  The new leader or team will have full executive decisions over SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com.

Nominations for Club Manager:

  3. Susan Chan

Only Individual membership to the SilverHairsClub

The SilverHairsClub is for Singaporeans, over 45.  The taboos on activities and discussions of the club are "No politics, sex, religion, race, direct selling and MLM".  Its objective is to provide a platform for SHCians to meet new and more friends.

From time to time, we get requests from expatriates and PRs to join SHC.  The answer is we will exercise discretion, and membership is subject to our approval.

It is important to note that only individuals are allowed to join this virtual but real social club.  In other words, corporations or companies or external organisations are not allowed to join SHC.  Corporations cannot be represented by a member, altho members may be part of that organisation.

As this is a "free to join" club, advertising is not permitted on the forum and during club activities.  Therefore, we do not support promoting external organsiations.  There are requests from members to promote external organisations or sell products.  I am reviewing this but unfortunately, I have not found a solution to meet such requests.  Basically, we do not have the human resources.

However, SHC has always been very open to members who are entrepreneurial, runs their own business and able to provide handy men services.  Some degree of mention of what you do will be accepted on this forum. Again, external organisations are not permitted to be mentioned here.

Here are some examples of what can be accepted on this forum:

  1. You are attending a sales talk at ABC company.  You may invited other members to join you.
  2. You are the owner of XYZ flower shop, and you can offer flowers at discounts of 10% to members.
  3. You provide PC fixing services, and would like members to know.  You may mention this in  your profile when you introduce yourself to fellow members.
  4. You can organise activities at BBB karaoke, and invite members to participate. This is acceptable, as long as you are attending.

Here are some examples of what would not be accepted on this forum:

  1. You put up news that there is a sales or service available at ABC company.  ABC company does not belong to you.
  2. You are a member of HHH club, and you like other members to join.  You would like to put up some advertising.  We do not promote external organsiations.
  3. You read some news in the newspapers about a company offering health products.  You would like to copy this information for other members.

Some of you have expressed disappointment and even anger at this rules.  I am not so sure how to handle this.  SHC does not have a management or a committee.  We are unable to monitor or keep track of all activities and going-ons.  So, a simple set of rules is sufficient.

If in doubt, feel free to write to me.  You are free to express your views and comments here too.

Public Health Seminars

There are health seminars organized by hospitals, TV networks and pharmaceutical companies every now and then for the public at a nominal fee (inclusive of refreshments). Unless we happen to come across them or receive news from friends, we might miss what could be very useful information for us. Most of the health seminars have top specialist professionals speaking.

I came across this one and if you’re interested please register directly to the organizer.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/edm/seminar/index.htm

I hope this will encourage SHC members not only to attend such seminars but also to share with others should they have info on forthcoming HEALTH-RELATED public seminars.

Cheers

Japan Onsen anyone?

Hi There    emoticon

I am planning a trip to Japan, in particular, visiting traditional onsen (hot spring) and staying in traditional guest house or inn.  Anyone interested in joining me?

This is not going to be the run-of-the-mill kind of package.  It will be rustic and relaxing, visiting quaint little town and villages.  But don’t worry ladies, it does have shopping stops including the famous Ginza & Shinjuku districts in Tokyo.

Tentatively, it is going to be a 6-day trip from 31 March (overnight flight) till 6 April to capitalise on the long weekend.  Cost is about S$2,500 per person twin or triple sharing, and S$3,000 for single.  Expensive huh!  But what the heck – we work so hard for what?  Why shouldn’t we give ourselve a treat once in awhile right?

a canal – Sungei Ulu Pandan canal, that flows into a river – Sungei Pandan.

Do look up among the trees and shrubs; you would probably behold colorful   emoticon
birds eg., the magnificent Purple Neck Heron, Kingfishers, Red-Capped
Woodpeckers or the White Egret; butterflies flitting among the greenery.

The walkway is well paved and most part of the canal route is generally well

Catching a movie in the morning

I just finished my breakfast in a shopping centre, here in Melbourne. Strolling around, I notice a long queue of seniors, approx 80 people. Busybody as usual, I got to the front of the queue to see what the excitement was all about. It’s 10am and every of these seniors were rushing to see the 11 am movie. It was cash only, just show the seniors concession card. There were a number of shows available eg there was “A single man”, “Up in the air”, “Fantastic Mr Fox” and “Crazy heart”.

I don’t see this in Singapore. Guess most of us are too busy, no time for such trivials or it’s just not in our culture. Maybe we just settle for DVDs at home.

Thinking aloud, I think this is a great retirement life, for seniors.

Peranakan gathering for SHCians

Sorry for a belated Gong Xi Fa Chai to all SHCians.

This is for Agnes Teo (at the moment I am attending another function, but got chance to use host’s PC. Apology if I left Gunong Sayang without saying goodbye.  On my way to Sengkang, it occurred to me that if you can, do please organise a Peranakan Lunch-cum-Ronggeng session in the near future for SHCians whom are Peranakans.

Do have a word with the Committee and as long as the date is not in July/August and December, the GSA premises is available.  The only snag is the musical band Dendang Irama is sometimes hired for the Muslims’ weddings on Sundays.  Your Bibik Singers will probably lend a hand.

Reminiscences of the good old days

This thread is not a duplicate of Caroline Gee’s ‘Chinese New Year – When I was a young girl’. There the topic focuses on how we spent our CNY when we were very young.

Here we’ll share our memories (as much as we can recollect) of the lifestyle we had from childhood to young adults. I reckon most of us will remember the Racial Riots, the Robinson fire and the itinerant hawkers.

I used to live in Tiong Bahru and it’s very close to Redhill. It was there when I came face-to-face with parang-wielding people of a particular race chasing after groups of people of another race. I was in the car of my eldest step-sister and we were en route to somewhere when we saw this incident. Needless to say, we were petrified at the sight of people being attacked! People were running everywhere, heedless of traffic on the main road. All the vehicles were cutting lanes and speeding just to get out of the melee. I was in my early teens and that is one frightening episode of a vicious fight between races I will never forget. *shivers*

Coming to food, we had this itinerant hawkers who carried their food on bamboo baskets on both ends of a hardy bamboo pole they heaved on their shoulder. As they pass the footpaths behind the flats they will holler the name of the food they sell. ‘Yong Tau Fooooooo’…..or ‘Lo Kai Yek’ often dragging the last word for impact. As children, my siblings and me will rush to the window whenever we hear the call of the hawkers. Sometimes my mother will buy but as children we got a thrill watching our neighbours ordering their food. For those living on the 3rd and 4th floor of the flats, they have to raise their voice to place their orders. Dialects were commonly used then so we got to know who speaks Cantonese and who speaks Teochew in our neighbourhood. The most interesting memory I have is the method of business transaction used.

All households in my neighbourhood will have a rattan basket with a long rope – one end is tied to the handle of the basket. The basket with money placed in it was then lowered to the ground floor. After the hawker has collected the money and placed the food into the basket, it was then hoisted up manually by pulling the rope. It had to be done slowly or else the basket might tip over and the food will be spilt.

Another fond memory I have is of the round ice balls. You know, the one where the Ah Poo Neh Neh (no offence to Indians) grabs a chunck of shaved ice, used his fingers to make a depression and filled it with boiled red beans and then add more shave ice and finally using both his palms to press the shave ice into a ball? He would then pour flavoured colourings round the ice ball and add condensed milk too, if requested.

The joy was in slurping all the sweetness of the flavourings in the ice ball and asking the APNN for more. Sometimes when he was in a good mood he would oblige but if not, he’ll cuss us in his language waving his hands to shoo us away. He could cut the ice ball in half so it can be shared.

There are so many wonderful memories all of us will have and it’s good to share before we forget them all. What we went through our children will never experienced even if they want to.

Oh! I forgot the water bombs! Hahahaha…Fill those plastic bags with water, tie up the end with rubber band, wait for courting couples walking on the street below and aim the water bomb at them after they’ve passed by. The intention was to shock not to drench them. Hehehehe

What can you remember? Perhaps we have similar experiences that are funny, naughty or plain nostalgic?

Going to the movies

Hello SHCians! I do believe most of us do not mind catching a good movie at the cinemas and/or live plays at the theatres occasionally. There are TWO genres of movies that are even more enjoyable in the company of friends.

1)  Horror movies – where we can scream aloud and frighten other cinema goers;

2)  Comedy movies – where it’s okay to laugh and laugh without being hauled off to IMH

For live plays, there are interesting foreign and local productions worth watching.

If you happen to like movies or live plays please indicate your interest in catching such shows with fellow SHCians.  I will be on the lookout for both categories and help arrange for day/day/time of viewing.

For your information, Senior Citizens above the age of 55 are entitled to watch movies at most cinemas IN THE AFTERNOON & ON WEEKDAYS ONLY for S$4.00.

I hope to generate some response for this thread….:p

Hire a husband

About a year ago, I met a guy in Perth.  We have since accepted one another as friends.  During the time of our meeting, we talked and joked about an idea of "Hire a Husband" as a means to find househelp.  I didn’t know what the idea was all about; until he brought me some Western Australian newspapers classifieds section.  Inside the classifieds was a section on "Hire a Husband".

Initially, I was eagerly looking for another section on "Hire a wife"; but cannot find.  Only got "Hire a Husband".  Well, this is a househelp section where you can find someone to help you buy the groceries, fix a broken lamp, walk the dog or even to feed you if you cannot hold a spoon.  Keeping one company appear to be one of the accepted tasks too.  Sounds very professional work.

In SHC, we have some guys and gals who have raised this topic before, ie help with SHC.  Well, this is Hire a husband.  Sounds fun, eh?  Let your thoughts run wild; and once  you have an idea, share it here.  We may be able to develop this "Hire a Husband" into something worthwhile doing as we get further into our SilverHairs years.

Eat durians, logans, cockcoaches and smell fresh fishes in the morning

I suddenly feel the urge to eat some Thai durians.  Also, tom yam soups, steamed sotongs and plenty of veggies.  Then, I think the sceneries should be an open sea with winds blowing over the face.  Maybe the smell of 2 inch crabs, 5 inch king crabs and fresh anchovies caught in nets, in the morning.  And, the urge to sleep from lunch to dinner.  Chance to eat some cockcroaches.  May 2-3 star hotels.  Likely with hot water.  A chance to chat with the local villagers and maybe learn how to cook tomyam soup and something else.

I am planning a trip to Thailand 23- 26 April 2010, both days inclusive.  Likely to be relaxing, no shopping, nothing to do, coasting Chonburi, to Jomtien to Bang Saray and Rayong.  Plenty of light eating and loads of sleeping and dreaming.  Likely to be limited to 16 pax. Itinery will be plane land in Bkk, pickup and return to airport.  Dates likely fixed and not changeable.

Please indicate your interest here.  I think we will try a new way to confirm the trip for those who are confirmed to join.  Likely again to be $50 deposit and the rest pay when you are in Thailand.  If you cannot come, we will use the $50 to buy durians.  Have fun.

Fri, Apr 23, 2010 – Must arrive Bkk airport by 0900 hrs. Pickup at airport 0930 hrs. You can use Jetstar, Tigerairways or any airline. There is no pickup from Bkk.

Mon, Apr 26, 2010 – Trip ends 1500 hrs. You will leave a hotel in Chonburi. From here, you will be sent to the airport. You can also make your own way to Bkk, book your own hotel and go back to Singapore on your own.

3D 2N Cameron Highlands Tour, 13-15 Mar 2010 (Sat – Mon)

Dear Friends

I am Event Co-ordinator for this event, and going on this tour.

Day 1 Singapore – Cameron Highlands (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Assemble at 0615 hrs for coach departure via Tuas 2nd link. First stop for breakfast, then onward to our destination – Cameron Highlands. Cameron Highlands is the smallest district in the state of Pahang which is located in the north western corner of the state. One of the wonders of Malaysia, it is the largest and most famous hill resort in the country.  This highland paradise still retains much of the charm of an English village. It is located on the Titiwangsa Range at about 1500 metres above sea-level, the temperature here can drop to 16oc or lower at times. Cameron Highlands is also the leading producer of flowers and tea in Malaysia.

Upon arrival, the first attraction – Flower Nurseries (Rose Valley Garden). The common flowers grown here are roses, carnations, chrysanthemum, dahlia, geranium, fuchsia and gladioli. You can buy cheap flowers at these nurseries or any market around the Highlands. If time permits, we will also visit Cactus Valley.  Be mesmerised by the myriad species of cactus of all sizes and shapes. Look out for the gigantic cactus.  Some can be as old as 60 years.  After visiting, proceed to hotel for check in. assemble at appointed time and proceed to dinner, after dinner free at own leisure. You can also visit the night market around the hotel area.

Day 2 Cameron Highlands (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Breakfast at hotel coffee house. After breakfast, proceed to Honey Bee Farms. There are three honey bee farms in the Highlands where visitors can learn about bees and honey production. You can also buy various honey products here. Lunch will served at local restaurants.
Next destination – Tea Plantation. No trip to Cameron Highlands is complete without a trip to the tea plantation. This is one of the main attraction that’s got to be in your “must see” list. You can visit the factories to learn about the tea making process and you can also sit down enjoy a cup of tea at the café (own expenses). The view overlooking the plantations is beautiful and perfect for the picture album. After visiting, proceed to Market Square. The market is a good place to look for all the produce the Highlands has to offer.  You can get everything cheap here if you know how to bargain. Dinner we will be having steamboat, having steamboat on a cold Highlands night is something you should never miss. Free at your own leisure at night.

Day 3 Cameron Highlands – Ipoh – Singapore (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

After breakfast, we get down from Cameron Highlands to Ipoh. This city is given another beautiful name as “Hill City” since it is surrounded by hills. Upon arrival, proceed to Ipoh’s famous cave Temple – Kek Lok Tong is Chinese words, which means Cavern of Ultimate Bliss. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Next, proceed to purchase some local products, and please don’t miss Ipoh White Coffee. Assemble at appointed time and proceed back to Singapore. Dinner will be served on the way back.
