How to be a co-host of a Zoom account? Practice Sun 16 and Sun 17 May 2020

This will be the last series of training sessions on how to use Zoom.

Zoom is a video conference app used to communicate LIVE with friends, colleaques and students.  SHC has already conducted one week of basic ‘How to use Zoom?”.

However,  there is a difference between being a host of a paid Zoom account, compared with a free Zoom account.

This Sat 16 May and Sun 17 May, we have allocated Zoom time, starting 1400 hrs and ending 1700 hrs.

  1.  Participants are given Co-Host rights during the practice period.  Similar to those with a paid account.
  2.  You get to practice all Zoom admin functions with SHC friends.  So, come early  at 1400 hrs so that you can be assigned a group of friends.  Every group will have 30 mins to play around the Zoom co-host features.  You will then return to the main hall, for coffee break, before being assigned another room for another practice group.  We close practice at 1700 hrs.

Our Peranakan friends among us

Singapore Peranakan culture can be traced to their links in MalaccaSingapore, and Penang.  Originally from the southern provinces of China, the immigrants travelled south to Peninsula Malaysia, inter-married and created a distinct culture Peranakan,

According to Laura Wee, Nyonya is the term for women and Baba for men.  These terms apply to the populations of Chinese descent in the British Straits Settlements and the island of Java and other locations, which have adopted the Nusantara customs and most have lived for generations along the Straits of Malacca.  Peranakans are usually educated and are able to speak the father’s language and mother’s dialect.

We have a number of members who are Peranakans.  Some of whom I know include Kenneth Tan, Agnes Seow,  Sue Chan, Laura Wee and Catherine Soon.  I also remember Ronald Wie.  Keys words associated with Peranakan include Malacca, Penang, Phuket, Peranakan food, baju kebaya and the sarong.

Since our first fashion parade, and for a long time, I have wanted to gather the Peranakans together.  We shall form the Peranakan group now, and if you are Peranakan, please WhatsApp “Peranakan” to +65 9489 4360.  We shall gather you together to share your family history, culture, traditions, dress and food.

good memories.

What and where to eat today? Come share with other SHC members.

Can you beat these places?

1/3 of our life is spent eating.  So, “what and where to eat ” are favourite talking points.  Probably, food is a great way to get to know more friends.  That’s why we always hear “Sudah makan?”, after lunch time.

Food is the easiest topic in any discussion.  There is Hokkien, Hakka or Cantonese style dishes.  There are Thai, Indonesian, and italian dishes too. Where to eat?  Many places are hidden, and some of us know where to find tasty dishes, old fashioned Hokkien mee at some faraway corner, at really good prices.

I have always tried to look for topics and reasons for SHC members to meet.  Well, food is a good reason.  With Covid-19 still around us,  let’s use SHC Zoom to meet, talk and share “What and where to eat?”.  and meet new and old friends.

Let us meet every Sat 11.30 am to 12.30pm.  The main table can be as big as we like.  For those who like smaller tables, we can seat you in separate private rooms of 4-6 pax (automatic free seat assignment).  Come join us, and you can see how SHC Zoom works for big and small groups.  Get your friends to meet you at 11.30 am every Sat.

Venue:  https://zoom.us/j/4178525736
Password shc.
Time:  11.30 am sharp.  1 hour only.

Cats & Dogs lovers group

At a recent SHC Zoom gathering, during our chats, we noticed that some members keep Cats & Dogs, and love to share and chat with fellow members with similar interests. I understand that cats and dog lovers can talk about everything and anything from food, furs on the sofa, peculiar habits, vets, sickness, loneliness, ability to understand humans and home stays.

I would be most pleased to start a Cats & Dogs lovers group for members. We shall allocated a slot in SHC Zoom, so you can chat with one another and share live videos of your Kitti’s and Lessie’s.

If you are interested to join the group, plse whatsapp “Cats & Dogs” to 9489 4360. Or join us LIVE 5 mins before start time.

“Sunday Rise and Shine”: Sun 0700 – 0800 hr

SilverHairsClub members are creative and have brilliant ideas. Here’s one suggestion which we picked up recently. How about getting up early from bed on a Sunday morning? Quickly tidy the bed, make a cup of hot coffee, squeeze in a small pau and look at the mirror.

7.00am:
It’s already 7am. Quickly, pick up the mobile phone, and let’s meet up on SHC Zoom, and wish those around us “Hi everybody, It’s Sunday Rise and Shine”.  Make sure you have space to swing your hands around your body.

7.15am:
Time for a 10 mins exercise together to stretch and loosen the bones. Everybody is muted, except for the Shifu and video.

7.30am:
Zoom unmutes everybody. Time to relax and cool down. Finish the coffee, with some youtiao. And maybe, share your hot soya bean milk with friends. A quick chat with friends, and off we run to start the day.

8.00am: Event close.

** If you are a Taichi or slow stretch instructor, please contact any senior member, we would like you to co-host this regular event.

** It’s fine to speak Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew,  Malay or Tamil.  The fun is being together.  Bring your friends.  “Sunday Rise and Shine” is open to non-SHC members.

Join us at https://zoom.us/j/4178525736?pwd=azNDN3ZWWVVwYUhrU3dZb0RTSmR1UT09

**  Latest:  This Sunday event is discontinued,  Feedback:  too early to wait up on a Sunday and not easy to exercise together online.

A Fancy Dress Dinner and Dance 2020

I am sure most of you must have been missing the Dinner & Dance which we have in previous years. Yes, they were great fun. Let’s start the year, to plan a Fancy Dress Dinner & Dance. I guess we can identify a suitable ballroom, a date and work on the concept. You can come come in an elephant costume, a sweet kimono dress, a masked Egyptian warrior or in a Trump golf suit.

The first stage is to identify a location. A great place with a band, plus a dinner buffet. Price is always difficult, but I am thinking of a budget of $50 per pax. Once we determine the venue, date and price, we can put things in motionP

Please do not call or WhatsApp me. Send all your thots and suggestions here. You can also discuss with your GL Group leaders, if you are shy. Meantime, please think of the role you like to play in this Fancy Dress Dinner and Dance.

I shall be travelling but will watch out for your input here.

SHC community in postal codes 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64. 1st 2 digits of 6-digit postal codes

IMM Spore
Come join SHC Jurong, Tuas group

Since SilverHairsClub was first established in 2005, all our activities and venues were centered within the CBD and East Singapore regions.

Although our bus and MRT network have made it easy to meet, there has been a reluctance from members leaving in the West and North to join activities because of distance. Very often, it can take one hour to travel between East and West Singapore, more so if activities are held on weekdays for working members.

We are looking at ways to make it easy for West Singapore members to meet in smaller groups. We reviewed our postal code system, and see that using the 1st 2 digits of our 6-digits as the community group can help members get together more frequently and conveniently.

We shall start with postal codes 1st 2 digits 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64. Mainly in Jurong and Tuas.

If you are living in these postal codes, as per your NRIC, and would like to join this community, please whatsapp text ‘zone 60-64’ to 9489-4360. The Club hopes that this project will help members meet new and more Silverhairs friends.

SHC Aquarium fish hobby

Feel young, feel refreshing, feel good

I guess some of us do not have the time to keep aquarium fishes when we were younger. Maybe because we are busy working or we have not develop the interest.

Today, some of us have the time. We may have grand children to entertain. We may start with a bowl, buy some guppies or some goldfishes. Only to see the lively fishies swimming around the new acquarium and bringjng a whole new world infront of us. A great way to enjoy ageing.

Then, we realise we have to get fish food, what to do when they swim upside down, refuse to talk with us, or refuse to make love and create babies. Sometimes, they grow too big and what do we do with them?

For some of us, we not happy with just guppies. We want to see sword fishes, fighting Siam fishes, Koi’s and $500 Red heads.

We adventure into JB to look for exotic aquarium fishes, find cheaper feed, pumps and filters. And we find friends to go with.

I would like to start a SHC Aquarium fish hobby group for members who have at least one fish in their homes or who have kept an aquarium before, and like to revive this hobby.

This hobby will start as a WhatsApp group for numbers to communicate. Strictly no URLs, no videos, audios, and copy and paste. ONE fish or acquarium accessory picture a day is allowed.

Plse WhatsApp text 9489- 4360 to participate. Strictly SHC members only. Registration closes 25 Oct 019 and participation starts 26 Oct 2019.

* SilverhairsClub will help develop hobbies for members from time to time. Do let your group leader GL know or any senior SHC member know. They will help you get registered too.

Knowing more about Facebook – Sharing knowledge

Facebook has become of the world’s leading social medium platforms. One of the best places to find long lost school- mates and colleagues. And finding interest groups.

Many members have a Facebook account, while others just refuse to look at it. You may be new to Facebook and you may want to learn more about Facebook.

Let’s rethink SHC succession

This year, we celebrate our 15th Anniversary. SilverHairsClub has been established since 2005, and we have been quietly successful through a network of Event Organisers EOs, Event Coordinators and members support who share our culture and traditions.

It’s about time we look again at succession and a new team to take the club forward. At 50, I founded the Club. Next year, I shall be 65, and will get to collect the 1st payment from my CPF. I am running out of ideas. And in reality, I don’t have so much time to spare for the club, as I intend to continue work till I die. On average, I spend about 3 days a mth in Singapore.

Every organisation needs continued succession and we need to review this from time to time.

I am now ready to hand over the club to someone or a team to take over and develop further the SilverHairsClub. My eyes will be focused on someone with SilverHairs at heart. Let’s reopen the discussion.

Our heart, our home, our Singapore – Happy National Day

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

All of us have seen many National Days. We participate in parades, we contribute to our nation and build Singapore to what it is today. We watch NDP celebrations on TV, at the Padang and National Stadium. We are all proud of Singapore.

On behalf of SHC, on this grand occasion, let’s wish our ourselves and our country, “Happy National Day”.

Sometimes we have unwanted stuff in our homes, and we want to give it away or sell it off

If you have some items close to your heart which you have kept for many years, but have now found the same items taking up space and looking pretty in a corner or your storeroom, you may like to give them away or sell them off.

Perhaps, some members may like these items. Consider inviting our members to come over at a specific date and time, we can have a look and perhaps take them away or buy them from you.

Simply let me know, a date/time, and we can open the event to members. You can also write a new post to inform the club.

Feel free. This is a great way to know other members, besides keeping your home light and breezy.

Retirement evaluation trip to Khao Yai 18-21 Jul 2019

Khao Yai, known globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 2 hours north east of Bangkok.

I am organising a trip to Khao Yai in July 2019. For this trip, I have asked Bernard, a Singaporean, who has retired and settled down in the Khao Yai area with his Thai wife Nicky. The couple owns a fresh corn-on-the-cob business. They enjoy farming, tissue culture and agriculture related activities. Bernard enjoys his retirement at Khao Yai. This is an opportunity to hear from a fellow Singaporean.

Khao Yai is known for it’s greenery, fruits, grapes, wineries, mountains, fresh air, open space, cows, hiking tracks, relaxing country side environment and resorts.

The trip will start from Donmuang or Suvarnabhumi airports and will depart to Khao Yai, approx 2 hours in 9 seater vans. The return leg will be to the same airport. Note: this is raining season and a good time to enjoy being wet.

The trip objective is to evaluate Khao Yai on short term retirement, while for others, a few days of fresh air and friendly company. Both Bernard and Nicky will share with us what life is like at Khao Yai, what it costs to stay here and what activities we can pick up in the part of Thailand.

If you are looking at stay up to 1 year in Thailand, come join the trip.

Interested, please sign your name here. You may withdraw if the final dates are not suitable. Group limited to 30 pax.
