Donating Blood – giving of life

Good morning

Im a regular Blood Donor and have donated 61 times…and am thinking of donating tomorrow 8th Feb (Wednesday) morning at 10am at SGH – just opposite Outram MRT.. Sorry for the late notice cos I’m travelling on Thursday so decided to do it bf the trip.

Anyone keen to join me? we can go as a group, chit chat… and have tea together..even 1 more person is good enuf lah..

Of course, you must be healthy, not doing it to check if you have HIV/AIDS and be prepared for intrusive questions…

I remember once the doctor told me that if you have Aids it is a jail sentence, I told him, "Doc, If I have Aids its a Death Sentence and you can do anything to me". We both had a hilarious laugh..

……More GOODNESS:
Walking is one of the simplest forms and also the most effective form of exercise. Good for sedentary

workers!

Regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is good because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the

heart and lungs, increasing overall fitness.

Walking is low impact.   It does not have the same potential for injury as jogging or other strenuous forms

of activities, yet offers all the benefits.

Founder had asked me to mention the benefits of walking.  So here goes…..

Some BENEFITS mentioned by doctors are:

1)  good for bones and improves the body’s cardiovascular system. It also helps boost circulation.
2)  helps to drain the lower legs of excess fluid and can help prevent varicose veins through the pumping
      action of the calf muscles.
3)  people tend to be able to walk at a consistent speed than run, it is a more beneficial form of
      tissue-cleansing.
4)  also better for the spine than running, as it puts less stress on the discs.   Human beings were
designed for constant movement, not sitting in cars or in front of computers, which causes negative
      pressures on our spinal cord.
5)  Regular walking is excellent for spinal discs, which receive minerals and vitamins through the
      pumping action it causes.

LET THE JOY OF DOING A PLEASANT ACTIVITY BE THERE ALWAYS!       emoticon

Till then…. stay Cool!  Be Cool!     emoticon

Life in Perth

2012 is round the corner! Many of us will be thinking of plans to do. I wish to bring up a travel plan for ladies who would like to visit Perth or its surroundings but lack friends to travel with. I know that sometimes we put off trips for lack of finding someone to travel with and may not feel comfortable travelling alone. As I spend about 2-3 months in Perth when I am there, I can provide B & B homestay accomodation in my home of 1 furnished room for single or 2 ladies sharing. You can have a free and easy stay, moving on your own or join me sometimes for activities eg golf, walks, eateries or short trips to nearby towns eg Mandurah, Margaret River. You will need to arrange your own flights to and from Perth but airport transfers can be arranged. For details and costs, contact can be by email. Cheers Joan

My First Attempt as VJ

Hello All Members,
I hope by now, some of you will notice that there is a change of song which is my first attempt as a VJ today.  I had particularly chosen this song "Rainy Days Mondays" from The Carpenters as it is really raining dogs and cats today.  And today also so happened to be Monday…

I had always been a great fan of The Carpenters since my Secondary school days, are you also.  Yesterday once more, Mr Postman, Top of the World and We had just begun are my favorites.emoticon

Today, eventhough it was raining all day but I still need to get out from home running errands after errands as requested by parents.  Given the fact that I don’t like to carry umbrella, so you can imagine that I was either running or standing at one corner hoping that the rain will stop or at least less downpour so that I can start running again.  emoticon

Want to have a special song dedication, or request of song for any reasons, please free feel to let me know here, I will try to accommodate as much as I could.  emoticon

Cheers… Dolly

Chinese New Year Breakfast dimsum, Sun, Jan 29, 2012

This Sun Jan 29, 2012, we we should celebrate the arrival of the Snake Dragon year.  All of us have celebrated Lunar New Years; and like what most of our parents expect, a reunion is good for family ties.  This is one occasion where we may be anywhere in the world now; but the reunion day is a must to meet, at least once a year.

For a start, if you are available in Singapore on this date, please write this appointment in your diary.  We have scheduled the event, although there are still many areas we have not tidied up.  If you  have ideas or suggestions, please share with us here.

  • Date :  Sun, 29 Jan 2012
  • Time :  8 am (come at 7.30 am also can)
  • Venue :  RED STAR Restaurant – 54 Chin Swee Road, Level 7.

I do think we should have a restaurant that is already decorated up for the Lunar New Year. This is an old place, no need to do any decor, and still carries the CNY mood.  Dont mind if we have to share with other diners.  Maybe we can entertain them.

  • Dress: Red and/or traditionally Chinese
  • What to bring: A pair of Mandarin orange
  • Menu:  Am hoping we can have a dim sum set, for around 12 – 17 dollars.  Someone told me I was dreaming.  I was living in the early 1990’s.  The price is now set at $30 per person.  Will use any excess money to buy lottery/toto tickets.

Today, we may be 6 2 weeks are just a few days away from the event date.  I guess some of you may have made plans to go to Genting casino or overseas at Sentosa.  But, if you like the idea of joining other fellow SHCians for a Lunar New Year reunion lunch, please indicate your name here.  If you have something on at a later date, you may withdraw before Jan 15.  Hopefully, this will help the planning committee, which has not yet been formed.

And, my favourite request has always been, if you can help in the organising committee, this will be great.  I look forward to your assistance.  Simply raise your hand.  So, you can help do a part with suggestions and ideas.

Silverhair got money

I just watched an interesting programme on TV about the business of providing for silverhair age group. Countries like Malaysia, Thailand and China are developing retirement homes and all of them are looking forward to good business.

Actually, we the people over 45 years old, hold the largest disposalble income in the world. From corporate chiefs to the retired, we actually are in control of more money than the younger ones.  And yet the marketing people only consider markets for children, teenagers and young adults, and when it comes to older people they only offer us retirement homes. Even when we discuss the subject here in this site, we thing about retirement home for ourselves. How about the time we have to spend before we need retirement homes. There are still a lot of life left before we sit on the wheelchair and wait for death.

We are still physically active even if we cannot exert ourselves as vigorously as the young. But there are many things we can do and should do instead of lying down preparing for death. The industry should provide for us but this can only happen if we demand it. They will listen because we control most of the money.

I think one of the problem is that most of the time, we tend to think in terms of the future. That is why we are preoccupied with retirement homes and eldercare. How about fashions that can make us look good now as we are…not younger. Entertainment places more suited to our taste. Golf games with fewer holes. Lighter footballs played on smaller fields. etc

OK you guys think of more and maybe start a business to earn some money from the rest of us. I am sleepy now……..maybe a special bed for our age with old partners?

Story about a disciple of the Satan

Watched a joke from the cable TV, I felt quite interesting and like to share. Also inspired by Dan’s post "Puss and Boobs, I leave the end of the story empty. If you have interest, you can finish it yourself. I will give the end of the original one on the coming Tue.

This is a story about a very clever disciple of the Satan (the Devil)

Long, long time ago, the Satam and his disciples were living on a very high mountain.

One day, Satan gathered all his disciples, asked them to go down the foot of the maintain and each had to pick two piece of rock back.

One of his disciples (very clever one) thinks that, from the top to the foot of the mountain is a very long distance, and our master has not mentioned about the size of the rock, why don’t I just pick two very small rocks back? He picked two very, very small rock and back to the top of the mountain. After all his disciples returned, the Satan says:"The rocks in your hand will become two bun with the same size of the rock, and they are your dinner tonight". That night, the very clever disciple sleep with a nearly empty stomach.

The next day, the Satan asked his disciples to do the same thing. The very clever disciple thinks this time I must pick two biggest rocks back. He did so. After all his disciples returned, the Satan says: "throw one of the rock you pick out. The distance of the rock reach will equal to the size of the bun you got for you dinner tonight, the further, the bigger; the nearer, the smaller". Then the very clever disciple sleep with another nearly empty stomach night again.

The next day after next day, the Satan asked his disciples to do the same thing again. The very clever disciple thinks, this time, I will pick one smallest rock and one biggest rock back, so I will sure win no matter what my master say, and he did so…..

I will stop temporary the story here. Whoever have interest, you can continue it. No right, no wrong, just for fun.

LAST Monthly walk’11: Tg Rhu/ Gardens by the Bay EAST (GB1)

This is the LAST WALK for this year!

Date : 10 Dec 2011 (Saturday)

Start TIME4.20pm  SHARP!

Meet Place : Dakota MRT (CC8), Exit A  ie., opp Exit B!  (I recalled at Exit B, you see the control station) From Exit A, go up escalator to ground level.  Let’s gather around the grass patch.
On arrival, do use the toilet facilities as non will be available till more than an hour later, at BayEAST.

Getting there:
1)  MRT – Circle Line, Dakota Station CC8
By bus, alight either at Blk 99 or opp Blk 62, along Old Airport Road
Bus Svc#s: 10, 16, 30, 31, 32, 33.

Leaders:  ChristinaCL Chan and Lydia Soh.

This evening the stroll begins along the Geylang River towards Tanjong Rhu Promenade where lovely
condos dots the river bank along the Kallang Basin; one might see some water sports eg., dragon boat
and kayaking.

As we approach the Promenade, we can see the Kallang Leisure Park shopping centre on the opposite
bank.  After sights of lush condos estate, IF the weather permits, will add a twist to this walk with an
"itsy bitsy teeny weeny" flavour!  ahem,,, what are you thinking??  Come and you shall find out…  emoticon

After this, another of nature’s beauty to behold!  Bay EAST —
the 1st of the S$1-billion Gardens by the Bay!

Bay EAST was an interim park in support of YOG2010 (Youth Olympics) .  In October 2011, this relatively
NEW park is opened to the public to enjoy.  For now, it offers basic facilities but future development is
expected at a later stage.
(Look for the infrastructure and interpretative signage showing the water sustainability story within the
interim garden).

The 32 hectares linear park, stretches along Marina Reservoir — offers a panoramic view of the overall
Marina Bay skyline (with Marina Bay Financial District and Supertrees at Bay South,  Marina Bay Sands,
Marina Reservoir, Marina Barage, Singapore Flyer and F1 Pitt Building as backdrop)… from a distance,,,

The unobstructed views are superb, a feast for your eyes,,,snap away! with your cameras.   emoticon
Breathe in! expand your lungs with fresh air.

Now that our eyes and lungs are filled, let’s head back towards the Promenade, cross a suspension
bridge to Kallang Leisure Park to nurse our growling tummies.

Stay COOL, BE COOL!!        emoticon

Lydia Soh and me, ChristinaCL Chan,,,,, signing off

we put ourselves in a vulnerable position for others to judge us. Do we succumbed to such critical remarks or we stand firm in the belief that nothing will affect us as long as our conscience are sincere.
Some are ready to capitalise on the slightest mistake make which turn them into a monstrous rumour monger. Other take delight knowing that we commit a grave offence.

I have come to a stage of my life where I am past caring. Each step on our journey of life brings
us nearer to meet our Maker. Not many of us may live long enough to write our biography. Here is
such an opportunity. I believe story can be shared to bring out the intricacies and beauty of life.
Can we know joy without going through pain or happiness without sorrows. Most of us are well brought
up in life having parent that ensure that we are loved and are given an education that set them for
life, what about those that are deprived?

My story:

‘When I was in Secondary School, I remembered an incident that till today I wonder why I did it. It
was the school sport day, I was a venture scout. We were supposed to put up a show where some of us
have to walk on an omega bridge which is  made of rope suspended about six foot from the
ground, another rope is suspended above our head. I have a part to play and that is to fall off the
bridge. As I fell off, the St. John Brigade rush forward to attend to me, the nurses were concern and enquire for my well being. A stretcher was make from two poles and a scout shirt act as the canvass. I was carried to the tent where I stood up and walk away without a scratch.

This act was enacted to show the preparedness of Boy Scout. How did I survive the fall, well, I was
able to break my fall because since young my dad took me for judo class, I think I have a blue belt
but my older sister the brown belt. Why did I shared this, it because if I fell wrongly, I may be paralyze for life!’

SHC platform is for us to meet new friend and to get better acquainted. Usually better rapport
are achieved in meeting or smaller group. Doing it here on the post is another ball game, can it
achieve some form of understanding and care among member?

Now you know a part of my life and what make me tickle, do I bite? Would you dare to share your most
unforgettable and memorable moments in your life here?

There are more incidents to share, my next installment:
How I try to ‘commit suicide’ when I did a bungee jump’

Puss n Boobs

With fear and trepidation I shall  proceed to put up this post

Dun worry, no contorted extravaganza.

Geraldine and Daniel, here goes.

Puss n Boobs.

Ah ha, Tom cat was looking for his boots and found tabby cat looking at her boobs.
(Sound sexciting!)
Tom cat asked pussy cat to go boot camp.
(How come you read my mind?)
Hee. Camping site is ready dear. Bring the sticks to set the fire.
(Good, we shall have a rendezvous!)
Pussy cat will be waiting in the moonlight.
(Tom cat shall swing along in the twilight!)

Meow.

(Meow, meow)

The conversation goes on, wat do you supposed it will be like?

Dan

Time to crack some heads.

Just an excuse to bring live to this post, I am about to pose some riddles on lateral thinking. The topic on the economic situation now and in the future may seem hard to bear but to some of us we prefer to act like the ostrich who attempts to ignore unpleasant facts and situations.

These ten riddles may require much stretching of the imagination, not to think logically but to think laterally.

1. The Man in the Elevator.

A man lives on the tenth floor of a bulding. Every day, he takes the elevator to the first floor to go to work. When he returns, he always takes the elevator to the seventh floor and then walks the remaining flights of stairs to his apartment on the tenth floor. Why does he do this?

2. The Two Americans

There were two Americans waiting at the entrance to the National Museum. One of them was the father of the other one’s son. How could this be so?

3. A Chess Piece

Two grandmasters played five games of chess. Each won the same mumber of games and lost the same number of games. There were no draws in any of the games, How could this be so?

4. The Coal, Carrot, and Scarf

Five pieces of coal, a carrot, and a scarf are lying on the lawn. Nobody put them on the lawn, but there is a perfectly logical reason for their being there. What is it?

5. The Silent Cabbie

A Comfort driver picked up a lady who was a notorious chatterbox. He did not want to engage in conversation, so he pretended to be deaf and dumb. He pointed to his mouth and ears to indicate that he could neither speak nor hear. After she alighted, he pointed to the meter so that she could see how much she owed. She paid him and walked off. Then she realized that he could not have been a deaf mute. How did she know?

6. Happy or Sad

Three women dressed in swimsuits were standing together. Two were sad and one was happy. But the sad women were both smiling and the happy one was crying. Why should that be so?

7. The Coffee Drinker

A man in a restaurant complained to the waiter that there was a fly in his cup of coffee. The waiter took the cup away and promised to bring a fresh cup of coffee. He returned a few moments later. The man tasted the coffee and complained that this was his original cup of coffee with the fly removed. He was correct, but how did he know?

8. The Dream

The boss of a storage warehouse had just arrived at work when one of his employees burst into his office. The man explained that while asleep the previous night he had dreamed that one of the stored boxes contained a bomb that would expode at two pm,. causing a terrible fire. the boss was skeptical, but agreed to investigate. After a search, a bomb was found in the area foreseen in the man’s dream. The police were called, the bomb defused, and a tragedy averted. Afterwards, the boss thanked the employee sincerely and then fired him.

The sacked  man had not planted the bomb, and his prophetic dream had saved the warehouse from destruction. Yet the manager was right to fire him. How could that be so?

9. Anthony and Cleopatra

Anthony and Cleopatra are lying dead on the floor in an Egyptian villa. Nearby is a broken bowl. There are no marks on their bodies and they were not poisoned. Not a person was in the villa when they died. How did they die?

10. Five Men

Five men were proceeding together down a country path. It began to rain. Four of the men quickened their step and began to walk faster. The fifth man made no effort to move any faster. However, he remained dry and the other four got wet. They all arrived at their destination together. How could this be so?

N.B. They relied only on foot power.

11. Family Reunion

At a family reunion, it was found that the following relationships existed between the people present: Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, Uncle, Aunt, Brother, sister, Cousin, Nephew, Niece. However, there were only four people there. How could this be so?

12. Stuck Tight

A truck became wedged under a low bridge. It could not move forward or back without severely damaging its roof. The truck driver was perplexed until a little girl standing nearby suggested an easy solution. What was it?

13. Another Riddle

What is it that the man who makes it does not need; the man who buys it does not use himself, and person who uses it does so without knowing?

How many reasons are there to explain for what will happen to the Singapore economy this year end and next year?

That’s nice.  I just read Dow 30 got hammered.  And Euro stocks are again slammed left and right.  And, we now hear the Super committee is going to be a failure.  And, our Singapore economy is going to register growth of between 1 and 3% next year.  The Straits Times reported job lost is going to be likely next year.  May or may not be a repeat of 2007/8; but nonetheless, we are talking about it.

We talk alot about our activities and our social lives.  Let’s share some talk about the world around us or the Singapore we have here. What do you think? And how do you feel about the year end and next year.

An opportunity for SilverHairs to meet one another on Tues, 6 Dec 2011 at Hans, while the mood is fresh, lively and festive

Hi everybody,

It’s been a long time since we last met at Hans Cafe @ Upper Pickering Street.  Many of us have not met one another while for some, it’s like donkey years.  I like it when you meet new friends.  I also like it when you catch up with old ones.

SilverHairs are very chatty.  Sometimes, they can even bring down the roof of Hans Cafe.  Well, we have many stories to catch up, new plans for next year.  Also, a good time to liaise plans for travel.  Got some old books to give away.  Or some relationships to patch up.  Some goodies to give away.  So, find out who is coming; then come.  If your friends are not coming, it might be too lonely of you to come alone.  But, if your friends are coming, come loudly.  No friends, say something here; and you will have a new friend in no time.

So, here’s the details of this event.

  • Date:  Tue 6 Dec 2011.
  • Time:  4pm to 8.30pm  (Even if you are late after work, also can register to come).
  • Charge:  Free.  If you need a drink or some dinner, you can get it at the Hans Counter.  I think they charge. Dont bring food or drinks, or Hans will skin us alive.)
  • Dress:  Any office wear; or anything.
  • Only registered SilverHairsClub members are allowed to participate in this event.

If you are new or has never come to a SilveHairsClub activity, please introduce yourself here.  Dont be shy. But if you are not shy, tell us also about yourself, the louder the better.  I like to suggest you wear RED, then we know you are new.  SilveHairsClub has one of the most varied name tags.  Please make your own name tag.  Anything you like can be on it; except no advertising of companies.  Just first and last name.

But, if you are not new, and has come to our activities a few times, please wear GREEN or BLUE tops.  Bring your name tag, or make one yourself.  Make sure your name is big, clear and friendly.  Or we would just give you a sticky label to put on your dress or shirt.

What do you do when you come?  First, do not sit down.  Secondly, say "Hi, My name is Mitchelle Yip.  May I know your name?".

Like with all events, you need to register to come.  Please be the first 80 members to register.  Non SHC members are not allowed please.

I look forward to seeing big wide smiling faces.

Another Pioneer Member Gone – Roger Lim Leong Hoo

Hi All SHC Members,

I got a SMS today informing me that one of pioneer member, Mr Roger Lim had passed away due to heart attack at age of 55.

From what I gathered, Roger was once a very active member in Y2008 to Y2009.  He had contributed many valuable comments on topics related to stock, investment, shares and trading.  He also participated in the monthly walks and even attended the 3rd SHC D&D organised by Francis M.  I believed there should be much more about him which some of you might had known.

For those who wish to pay Roger the last respect, I was told by his family members that they are only planning to have a 2-days wake (ie 25/10 & 26/10) and funeral scheduled to be on 27/10 Thurs at 5.15pm.

Roger’s wake is located at Block 94A, Whampoa Drive.

Those going and need further contact of Roger’s family member, pls write to my email dlgummy@hotmail.com or post your comments here and I will liaise with you directly.

Best regards,
Dolly

Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub on its 6th Birthday, Oct 2011

SilverHairsClub started in Oct 2005.  With some friends, we conceived the idea of a social group for Singaporeans, over 45.  The idea was to develop a small group of friends whom we could enjoy our time through the years.  However, being novices in this area, the original group of founders were not sure of its success; but we decided to build it on a small scale, step by step.  To keep it as a platform for SilverHairs to meet other SilverHairs, we adopted a few taboos, more because we did not know how to manage these discussions.

While SilverHairsClub is seen as a blog or forum, it is now very much a Club for members to meet and interact with one another.  SilverHairsClub is both virtual and online; and yet it functions as a Club where members meet.  SilverHairsClub.com serves as a focal point for sharing and interaction.  A place where members get together to organise events, chat about this and that, and knowing other members with similar likes and dislikes.

SHC has undergone some small changes over the years.  In the coming months, I hope to see a bigger platform where members can get to meet new and more members.  On the ownership of SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com, I have made the  move to transit it from an individual ownership (myself) to SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  Hopefully, this will receive better recognition and acceptance within the Singapore community.

So, this month is our 6th anniversary, or our 6th birthday.  I hope you will celebrate this birthday occasion with other fellow SHCians.  Happy Birthday to SilverHairsClub.

Terence Seah
