Valentine ideas?

SHC is large enough to allow ideas to surface and to make ideas come true.  2010 is unusual in that both Valentine day and Chinese New Year eve fall on the same day.  We never had a Valentine day.  But, this doesn’t mean an event on this day won’t work.  We just need to put the thinking process inplace.  After all, why not?  Maybe a Valentine lunch?  Heh, this is a Sunday.

Will you join a Valentine event, with red misleto fruits hanging above, hearts, and roses?  Ideal for couples, those in love or just wanting to share sometime out with a friend.

I think we can think of an event, maybe 10 – 15 couples.  I hope we can make it happen, and anyone likes to help me to make this event come true.  We have organisers and we have participants.  How’s that?  We close the dreaming process on 18 Jan 2010.  Then we make the event come true.

Now, seating and dreaming on a porch, facing a huge lake in Thailand Uttaradit province, with mirrored images of trees on the still waters and tall trees on both sides.

The Westerlies wind is blowing. January 30, 2010

The idea has been brought forth by Rosalind and Terence and some others. We had some territorial group formed before but it faded off into the horizon!

Before the Easterlies came up with some show, the Westerlies want to be the first to jump up the bandwagen. Those who are from the West may show your interest here. We would need to locate a place to meet or possibly a member’s home, whether for lunch or dinner?

New members are encourage to come forward and we look forward to hear all your suggestions!

What should I be when I grow up?

The year 2009 will very soon come to an end. All of us will be one year older and one year closer to death.

When we were young we look forward to a new year and cannot wait to be old enough to date and party. Than as we grow up, we compete for a position in society and accumulate wealth. Now that we have counted our money and keep ourselves comfortable enough to have the time to log in this forum, I wander what next.

Do we still need dreams and embition to give us drive and energy to live on. Many of us have worked hard when we were young, so that when we get old, we can be comfortable and enjoy life. But now that we are here, what is it that we should be enjoying. If we eat too much we die. If we exert ourselves too vigorously, we die. If we just rest and sleep we also die. There are many enjoyable things which the young do that our body cannot follow. But if we do nothing death comes earlier.

So what is it that we should wish for in 2010?

Santa Claus is coming to town ….

A bad role model for children, promoted obesity, drunk-driving, speeding and an unhealthy lifestyle?? …therefore instead of gorging minced pies/brandy and idling in his sleigh, Santa should go on a diet and swap his reindeer for walking, jogging or cycling to deliver his presents hahaha (may be the new year resolution for Santa !).. Do share ur humorous lines and the perfect image of Santa to be then…. A Blessed and Merry X’mas to ALL too ** Oops : If Santa sneezes or coughs around 10 times a day, all the children who sit on his lap may end up with H1N1 flu as well as their Christmas presents" emoticon

Cheers,

What the good things I did in year 2009?

Well, am I glad I joined Silverhars Club where I get to know so many new friends. Throughout this year I get to learn new dances and get to practice them in the various jams. A sort of exercise in wriggling my almost worn out body but it was so much fun.

The other good thing was to take up a challenge to reduce my intake of foods and perhaps lose some weight and in the process feeling and looking good!

Let’s hear from all of you.

Dan

Monthly Walk Sat 12 Dec Dairy Farm Nature Park

Date: 12 December 2009 (Saturday)

Meeting Place: Bukit Batok MRT nearby control station by 4.00pm sharp

Duration:  about 2 hours

For those who are driving, take the PIE and turn into the BKE.  Exit at Dairy Farm Road and travel for about 200m before turning left into Car Park A next to Salvation Army.    Be there at 4.30pm to join group who will be arriving by bus from Bukit Batok Central.

EOs for this walk:  Veronica Wong and Mary Tan

From Dairy Farm to Nature Park

The Dairy Farm Nature Park officially opened on 5 September 2009 has two sections.  One trail leads to the Wallace Education Centre and the other goes to the Singapore Quarry.  For this walk, we are taking the nature trail leading to the Wallace Education Centre.   It is the old Dairy Farm Road and fairly easy.

Formerly a cowshed, the building that is now the Wallace Education Centre also serves as a exhibition and learning facility for nature enthusiasts to meet and share their knowledge with others. The building is a nice example of architectural conservation where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Walk ends back at Car Park A and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Koufu Food Court in West Mall. There are stalls serving fried hokkien mee, pasta, Japanese cuisine, Indian food, vegetarian, yong tow foo mee, herbal soup, duck rice kway chap, fish soup, Korean food, roasted delight, tim sum, fresh fruits, juices, dessert and beverages.

See you at the walk!

Talk on “retirement planning” 10th Dec

Hi folks!

A seminar will be held on 10th December, on “retirement planning”. Out of curiosity, I am attending this event, to gather information, and perhaps, to learn a little bit…Are you interested?  Indicate your interest here, and meet me at the venue.

I am sharing information with you, as I thought that this may interest you. I do not know any more than whatever that was stated. Here are the details :

You are cordially invited to the Citigold Seminar on retirement – the key planning processes involved, as well as the new implementation of CPF Life and its impact. Retirement planning in the past few years has been the key focus in our wealth management proposition due to the sharp increment in Singapore’s aging population. With adequate planning, retirement can be a breeze.

The recent financial turmoil has prompted many Singaporeans to go back to the drawing board to re-look at their plans. Let us take this opportunity to assist and point you to the fundamentals of retirement planning. We value your attendance – we would love to show our appreciation with a door gift. Most importantly, being involved in YOUR retirement planning is our greatest pleasure.

JOKES

Some jokes would like to share with all of you

Joke 1

Once upon a time, a group of Ah Bengs stepped into a lounge and wanted the DJ to play the song" Ah Cheng Buey Ro Ti: (In Hokkien means Ah Cheng buys bread). The DJ told them they only  have English songs and told them to re-select another song. Ah Beng were very angry and kicked up a big fuss claiming he DJ was insulting them. The Manager had to intervene in order to calm them down, finally after a long talk with Ah Bengs, the manager found out that there were actually asking for the song " Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers.

Joke 2

The Titanic was sinking and there weren’t lifeboats, So the captain had to persuade male passengers to jump into the icy water to make room for women and young children.

To the British he said, "You must act like gentlement". They Jumped.

To the Americans he said, " You can be heroes." They Complied…

To the Germans he said, "it’s the rule." They Obeyed.

To the Japanese he said, " It’s the consensus." They Obliged.

Then came the Singaporean and they just weren’t budging until he came up with the appeal: Free Life Jackets for those who jumpted.

Perth in 2010

Hi All

Those who are interested in visiting Perth next year and looking for B & B accomodation in Perth,I may be able to assist. I have a few friends (ex-S’poreans/Malaysians) who have rooms to offer.

Generally, it’s better to hire a car and do self-drives in Perth itself or nearby regions eg Busselton, Mandurah, Margaret River or up north to Jurien Bay, Monkey Mia etc.

However if you don’t drive, perhaps guided driven/bus/walking trips can be suggested for you.I’ll be in Perth from Mar-May and so can offer my assistance too. I hope to visit Ayers rock/Alice Springs at that time and so those who wish to go that way, let me know.

Cheers
Joan

Can you give moral support to SHCians who are trying to reach their ideal weight?

Some of you may remember the post on "What is your secret to looking good and feeling good?".  If you have joined the activities organised by fellow SHCians, you will probably understand that looking good and feeling good is very important, especially when we enter our SilverHairs years.  Feeliing good and looking good depends on a number of factors.

But, one factor which I like to start with is looking good.  Let start with height and weight.  There is such a thing as ideal weight.  Last one month, I realised that I increased my weight to 69 kg when my ideal weight for a height 164 mm should be 65 kg.  Likely due to too much eating.  And, there are many reasons why we cannot reach our ideal weight.

So, let’s help one another.  Go ahead and tell us and everybody what is your height in mm, your ideal weight (in kg) and your current weight (in kg).  On 16 Jan 2010, tell us again your height, your ideal weight and your new weight.   When another SHCian reads your wish, he/she can offer you a prize for meeting your ideal weight.  We all need incentive to control weight, altho we know it’s good for health.

So, let’s hear from you.  Don’t be shy.  Let’s the SHC community help you to reduce your weight, so that you can look good and feel good.

Register your participation here.

The Singapore River forms a central artery in Singapore’s densely packed Central Business District packed ith skyscrapers, old-style bridges, historical buildings, and the nightlife-along the riverside streets of Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay.

The walk will begin from River View Hotel.  We will walk along the riverbanks, you will see the lighted ambience on the fringes of all the various "Quays"; upmarket condominiums, fine cuisine dining, drinking bars, manicured landscape, boutique bridges, paved walkways and river cruisers line the banks of the Singapore River.

On reaching Empress Place, we will cut across to the Merlion via Fullerton Hotel.  On this side of the waterfront, you will see the almost completed majestic 3 hotels of the IR.  We will stop here for some photo shoots and fresh air.  Then we shall continue the scenic walk across Esplanade Drive towards our endpoint…….. Esplanade Mall / Marina Leisureplex to absorb the great Christmas light up and feel the ecstatic mood of the festive season.

Profound quotes or phrases

I thought I’d start a thread whereby all of us can share quotes or phrases that is meaningful and worth pondering over.

Here’s mine that I received via email from a good friend.

"Apologizing does not mean that you are wrong and the other one is
right…It simply means that you value the relationship much more than
your ego  …"

Free wash and blow or Hair Perming

Hi all girls, I could arrange the above event from a Hair Academy(in China Town), as my daughter is a student there. This event is only for the ladies, it can even extend to yr maids or others, may be this is the way to save some money, right…

Anyone interested may list your name here…

Or through email….

Year 2010 – Monthly Lunch/Dinner outings

Hello fellow SHCians! Would any of you be keen to go for a food hunt once a month, commencing January 2010?

There are many yummy eateries – restaurants/zhe zhars at coffee shops/hawker stalls spread all over Singapore that serve delicious dishes at very reasonable price. My idea is to have any SHC member recommend a good place to eat, either for lunch or dinner during a chosen day of the month.

Of course, the credo ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’ will prove challenging but it’ll be interesting to be adventurous once a month.

I suggest Dolly Lim be the EO of this……..:p
