SilverHairsClub Forum via WordPress – 22 May 2021

This forum is an online “meeting place” and it is used to engage with others or groups of the same interest gather together so they can discuss or debate, share knowledge and communicate with others about something or provide useful information.  It is like a message board, where members create a POST and can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

The Club provides a forum for SHCians interested to network with others. Today, session is indeed fruitful.  Terence has arranged it to enable more SHCian to be engaging and create awareness on their current activities.   Based on the recent feedback survey, numerous members do have difficulty in accessing the forum.

One member quoted – I am still blur what WordPress is – Simply put, WordPress is web publishing software SHC use to create her own website or blog.

How does forum work? A user creates a post.  That post can be accessed by other users at any time. It can contain questions, opinions, images, videos, link and more. Users can respond to the post, which creates a dialogue other user can participate in also known as a Thread.

Thanks to Terence, Howard, Yoon Chin n Steve… we are here to share – please click on the video link to view more… We highly encourage members to register in Silverhairsclub.com and be a Contributor.

Keep a lookout for the next session…

Join the Diabetic, high BP, hypertension, cancer and Stroke support groups

Having a headache, a stomach ache or a flu may be easily cured after visiting the GP.

At our age, what does it mean when we are striked with a major sickness. We turn to our hospitals. There is excitement. Will we ever be cured? How do we overcome the costs of medication, doctor visits and hospital stays. What medication or treatment do we go through?

I am a diabetic for 20 plus years. I thought medication, diet and exercise would help or cure. But recently, my TTSH doctor told me I have to undergo dialysis. So, I am looking forward.

Unfortunately I didnt have the experience to slow kidney failure. I felt I should have started a diabetic support group for members who are diabetic. This group is not for advisors.

I have allocated every 1st Thur 2100 – 2200 hrs for diabetics to gather together. Join us from your home on Zoom. If u are diabetic, rsvp “Diabetic”.

Fyi,
2nd wk Thur 2100 hr High BP, Stroke, hypertension.

Why People Born in MAY Are Totally Unique

Believe it or not…

  • They are considered strong – known for their strength of mind, body and spirit.
  • Tend to be born tinier than those born in other months – some are shorter, lighter and have smaller heads.
  • They are driven to succeed – strong-willed and deeply emotional, possess inborn 6 sense that helps them navigate through life – can be stubborn, but their critical, systematic ways of thinking help them to get stuff done.
  • Often have Wanderlust – restless n curious, always itching to explore the world, bitten by the travel bug, exploration is not simply a distraction but it’s a way of life. They are the last to complain about hectic lifestyles.
  • May-born Parents are the BEST – their kiddos can count themselves among the lucky ones; they are devoted, well-organized, resourceful and creative… Plus point for May-born spouses, both are affectionate and funny.
  • Watch your wallets with May-born people – born in this month are notorious spendthrifts, BUT if they set their minds to save money, they’re also the most committed to doing so.

The 2 zodiac signs associated with this month are Taurus and Gemini.  The practical Taurus can be known by their earthy and realistic ways of living. Gemini has a talkative, abstract, extreme intelligence that flies past – ready to go and do.

On behalf of SilverHairsClub – we would like to wish those SHCians born to this month a wonderful HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

PS – do drop a line or 2 to send them wishes on their birthday month…

The 7th Zonal meet-up managed to make its way on Friday, 16 April 2021 to Boleh Boleh! located at 3155 Commonwealth Ave West #04-20/22, Singapore 129588.  The session starts from 11am and end slightly after 3.30pm with the 2 EOs at their helms to make sure no one was left out.

We had 11 members signed up and all turned up for this makan and friendship bonding.   We had to split into 2 tables to observe safe distancing measures.  They are:-

  • ChanKH – Co-EO
  • AnneC
  • ChengWK
  • DollyL
  • FongWC
  • JessieO
  • StellaS

Many interesting discussions on wellness & health, tours & holidays and current activities besides Zonal meet-up, were shared and discussed among members.  I must say that mission accomplished for each and every one especially for me, longing for this catch-up with ex-colleague cum friend of 25years, MargaretS was to no avail till now.

Some of us need to leave by 2pm but both 2 EOs together with Cheng were still chatting while waiting for the remaining members to turn up.

Lastly, kudos to VincentH and ChanKN for their efforts towards this meet-up as well as Cheng for his company, we can see from photos of many smiling or laughing faces.  BTW, do make a guess, where and when will the next Zonal meet-up be?  Or why not give us an option or suggestion and liaise with ChanKN and he will create a future meet-up link…  the continuation will be ongoing and happening again…

Cheers… DollyL

SHC home cooking program

Many SHC members are into cooking and baking. They cook tasty dishes and desserts while others bake aromatic nonya cakes, kueh2 and bread. As an extension of our Yummy yummy and cooking programs, we hope to make available home cooking to fellow members.

To start, step 1, we will collate a group of members, who cook at HOME and are ready to sell to other members. We will start with 10 interested members.

This program is meant for homecooked food, not for commercial businesses. Participants advertise their dishes, determine price, collect payment and organise deliveries.

In step 2, we open this home cooking service to other SHC members. Members can order directly to the chefs or bakers, pay direct and arrange deliveries.

To participate in step 1, plse whatsapp 9489 4360, indicating cooking or baking interest. There is no fee. Closing date: once 10 participating members reached .

Tennis and Cycling Redux

Having been stuck in Singapore for over a year and unable to pursue my favourtie three S’s (SCUBA diving, sailing, skiing) all of which requires travel, a consolatory fall back for me have been tennis and cycling. SHC used to have a very active tennis group which played regularly at Tanamera and a cycling group that cycled quite often too.

Anybody keen to revive these two groups? We can get together and crank it up.

For tennis I can get courts at Bukit Batok while for cycling, more and more cycling paths are being opened, the latest being the rail corridor to Rail Mall.

What is special about APRIL born?

It is the beginning of the 2nd quarter of the year, known for beautiful spring weather when the Easter bunnies will make an appearance!  A month of the growing season when trees and flowers beginning to bloom.  It is also believed it is named after the Greek Goddess, Aphrodite.  Old English – April.

History of April – How much do you know?

  • April was the 2nd month of the earliest Roman calendar about 700 BC.
  • It is the 4th month of the year in the Gregorian calendar about 450 BC, when it also was given 29 days.
  • 30th day was added during the reform of the calendar undertaken by Julius Caesar in the mid-40s BC, which produced the Julian calendar.

Those born in this month are either an Aries or a Taurus. Both are very different signs to one another – Aries being quite passionate and impulsive, while Taurus is much more stable and down-to-earth.

On behalf of SilverHairsClub – we would like to wish all SHCians April Babies a great

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

PS – do drop a line or 2 to send them wishes on their birthday month…

27 FEBRUARY WALK AT KAMPONG GLAM

SHC has several activities catered to the various interest of its members. During this pandemic Covid-19 period, walking was one of physical activities that is on-going. However, walkers were only allowed in groups of not more than 8 pax.

The Laughter Yoga+walks is one such group that conducts several scenic walks taking the lushes landscapes and waterways routes. Leisure walks, taking in the sights, discovering nature and KODAK moments are some of the highlights.  I believe, there are other walking/hiking groups, but the level of intensity is beyond me. The route is much longer and the concentration of the terrain maybe tough for me too. More importantly, I enjoy the camaraderie of the Laughter Yoga+walks members. No hard pressure to keep up, but the discipline of each and every member is very important to adhere the safety and pleasure of other members.

On 27 Feb, our walk was unique as it was a ‘city walk’. EOs Irene, Lydia and Iris did a fantastic job planning and organising this walk. To organise these weekly walks, the EOs needs to gather the parks information such as the route, its intensity, toilet facilities. Not to mention meeting points,  MRT/bus route, dinner place to chill out and the all important back up route, if it rains.

We began punctually at 4.30pm from Bugis MRT. Our 1st photo shoot, all aboard on the bullock cart pulled by Ox-y, since this is his year.

Our 1st destination was Blanco Fish Soup at Beach Road. The rich broth was flavorful and the chunks of meat from the fried fish head was fresh. Besides fish soup dishes, other yummy dishes such as ngoh hiang, omelette and fried vegetables were served too.

At Kampong Glam, Irene gave us a brief history of the place,  and we spent some time to take in the area’s atmosphere.  At the Sultan Gate, we admired the grandeur of the Sultan Mosque, followed by photo taking session. We came across a giant platform swing and the child within us had to have a go at it.

We walked our way towards Arab Street. The beautiful colourful Mediterranean wares added vibrancy to the street. The evening scene of Kampong Glam was so alive, touristy and full of night life.  Muscat Street was laced with interesting eateries with locals and tourist having their meals al fresco style.

At Haji Lane, we could not resist dropping in the shops for its modern quirky items. This lane is known for catering to the youngsters as a hangout. On the walls, are several paintings and photo worthy graphics. At the end of Haji Lane towards Beach Road, tourists and locals were enjoying their drinks seated on bar stools, their tables filled with munchies, liquor and beer. They seemed to be having a good time, chatting and chilling out.

As we left Haji Lane, a more subdued road greeted us. We continued our walk towards Raffles City for McDonalds to cool down before heading home.  It was so lovely to sit, chat and enjoy each’s company over soft ice cream, drink and food to round off the walk.

Though the walk was in the city, the walking along these routes,  time mingling and looking out of each other in the crowd was equivalent to the time taken in the parks. Exhausted, I may be at the end of it, I totally enjoy it and look forward for my next walk with this group.

A big shout out to Irene, Lydia and Iris for efforts in organising our weekly walks.

2021-03-05 Zonal Meet Up @ Toa Payoh HDB Hub

I would like to take this moment to thank both ChanKN and DollyL to initiate and organize Toa Payoh Zone as the 5th location. It is a food paradise within walking distance.

Original plan to hold it at TPY KouFu was switched to Fork & Spoon at the last hour due to mid-afternoon crowd bombarded mostly by seniors in a matured estate. Both ChanKN and myself were early trying to secure 2 long tables of 8 pax but failed. A quick decision to switch location was made coz I am confident there are afternoon vacant tables there… I quickly rushed over to recce and manage to get 2 long tables by 3:00pm.

After much hiccups, we [3] managed to gather 11 members to join us at Fork & Spoon. The remaining 5 stayed at KouFu and ordered their food instead which is good for us coz it is indeed a big group.  Namely, DavidO n LilianC, AnnieS, SherryW and RichardW.

Photo images of both locations and food ordered showed a successful bonding amongst the members, from initial Koufu to Fork & Spoon and later adjourned to Gourmet Paradise for famous Soon Heng Rojak shows it all.

Meanwhile at Fork & Spoon – we received a SOS call that some of them were unsure of the location. Hence, we took the initiative to go and ferry them here. Though a bit disorganized in the location but am glad we can see smiling faces amongst them gleefully enjoy the remaining hours in deep entertaining discussion on travels, gardening tips and not forgetting SRVouchers on how to redeem it.

I must say to shout out loud or applaud to SherryW, our ardent Zonal fan, who took the effort to join the remaining team at Fork & Spoon.

Overall, this Zonal catch-up bonding is a salute to all participating member who made it happen. Images shows it all as the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

Looking forward to the next bonding…
