HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENT:

I am very happy to inform that the organiser has agreed to my request on the following conditions:

1. Singer must be a SHC member.

2. Interested members have to register with me via email (francisemail@yahoo.com)

3. If there are many interested members, then there will be auditon for apporoval as dancing is important with correct rhythm of the singers.

4.Selected members have to come for rehearsals if any.

5.Interested members agree to pay fees for the audition and/or rehersals.

6.The decision of the organiser on the selection of members is final.

THANK YOU to all at East Zoners’ 1st get-together

Out of the 33 members who indicated their interest AND presence at the get-together today, 16th January, one sent her apologies for not being able to turn up and two just simply did not turn up. :(

My heartfelt appreciation to the rest who made the effort to turn up and socialize with other members including the new members. I also want to thank the Welcome Committee for helping to keep the conversations flowing throughout the 2 + hours’.

I hope someone else will take the initiative to organize another East Zoners’ get-together soon.

Thank you

Ros

Being a Parent/Parent-in-law/Grandparent

I am pretty certain that many SHC members fall into one or more of the above categories, and from time to time, might like to share some of their experiences.

I fall into all of the above 3 categories; mother of 3 daughters, mother-in-law of one and grandmother of one, second one due in April.  From my own experience, it is a breeze being a mother-in-law, easy enough being a grandmother as my daugter has great parents-in-law who absolutely dote on their first & only grandchild and hardest of all, being a mother.  Like most mothers will agree, you will never stop worrying about them, regardless of how grown-up they become, maybe more so, if you have daughters.

That said, I think that once they start working,  it is important we make time for ourselves to pursue our own interests.

Do u make your own Chinese New Year goodies? & would u sell any of your goodies to fellow SHCians?

Generally, SHC does not accept selling of products and services on this website.  This year, I think we shall give it a go, and see how organise or disorganise we can be if we allow the selling of CNY goodies on this website.

As long as you are a SHC member and make the goodies yourself, and that the goodies are not from a commercial organisation, you can use this website and take orders here.  You can state the prices and when and how to collect the goodies.  No tel numbers.  Email addresses are ok.

Can be kueh2, pineapple tarts, sponge cakes, "everybody’s birthday cake", roast cashew nuts, BBQ pork, etc.  Leave it to your imagination.  But, they have to be CNY goodies.

Please use only this Post.  This Post will close on 14 Feb 2010.

Video DVD for Year 2010 SHC Activities

Dear SHCians,

Happy New Year 2010 !!! emoticon

Time passed very fast. One year has passed and another has begun.

As I reflect on the numerous activities organised by SHC, how I wished I can attend every single
activitity as they are filled with fun, education or bond-building.

However, like many members, my time is limited and I can only attend a handful of events.

As such, how I wish I can cherish those moments I was there and if I was not present, someone
can record these events and organise them in one form or another for everyone to share.

So starting this year 2010, I wish to offer my service to put together pictures, videos and
anecdotes of as many events organised by SHC as much as possible. I will create a Video DVD,
one in the middle of the year and another at the end showcasing the humorous, exciting and
human aspects of you participating in those regular or ad-hoc activities from time to time.

To succeed, I would need the cooperation of EO/EC to send in the pix or short video (< 2min)
(can ask a photographer in place) and write a short summary of the event for my compilation.

Possible (and not limited to) events are:

Regular Features

Monthly meetings
Monthly Cycling
Monthly walk
Dance Lessons / performance
Annual Dinner and Dance
Travel Trips
Games / Sports
Educational Talks

Ad-hoc Programs

Potluck / makan sessions
Cabaret Nite / Star-in-Concert
Movies / Picnics
Special Talks (eg: on jewelry)

In short, any event which you think is of value, please send them to:

jamestancl@gmail.com

So EO/EC for various events and members in general, please feedback your input whether you support
this idea for the benefits of the whole SHC club and any suggestions you may have.

Note that this is not going to give you much additional work other than writing a good summary
and send the video separately as Oi Cheng can only accept photographs (need not send
separately to me).

I await to offer my humble service.

sincerely,
james

We have been requested by a seniors lifestyle magazine Silver Lining to feature some of our talented SHCians.  Two SHCians have been identified, and they are Jane Kee and Ron Koh.  Jane’s talent in producing colourful paper flowers from magazine sheets.  Ron  Koh is also a talented origamist in Singapore, and while he is now with a stroke, he is recovering fast.  He hopes to join SHC activities when he gets in better shape.

They will be interviewed by the magazine soon, and we look forward to seeing the published work soon.

Valentine ideas?

SHC is large enough to allow ideas to surface and to make ideas come true.  2010 is unusual in that both Valentine day and Chinese New Year eve fall on the same day.  We never had a Valentine day.  But, this doesn’t mean an event on this day won’t work.  We just need to put the thinking process inplace.  After all, why not?  Maybe a Valentine lunch?  Heh, this is a Sunday.

Will you join a Valentine event, with red misleto fruits hanging above, hearts, and roses?  Ideal for couples, those in love or just wanting to share sometime out with a friend.

I think we can think of an event, maybe 10 – 15 couples.  I hope we can make it happen, and anyone likes to help me to make this event come true.  We have organisers and we have participants.  How’s that?  We close the dreaming process on 18 Jan 2010.  Then we make the event come true.

Now, seating and dreaming on a porch, facing a huge lake in Thailand Uttaradit province, with mirrored images of trees on the still waters and tall trees on both sides.

Chinese New Year Lunch – Sat, 20 Feb 2010 (tent)

Each year, SilverHairsClub has a CNY lunch, where members gt to come together, where possible in traditional new year costumes, have a lunch, exchange greetings, angpows and oranges.  The event is two months away, but it is a good time to get started.

The place can be anywhere in Chinatown, a heartland, but preferably somewhere where the setting is Chinese, and serves traditional Chinese food, maybe tim sum or even just traditional Chinese sweets, cakes and tea.  Seating minimum of 60, with flexibility to extend to 80.  Budget is important, and I think,it should not exceed $19.

So, time to throw the ideas to club members. If you have an idea, simply scream it out.  We need to have some ideas on place, and type of food.  But importantly, an opportunity to meet and exchange "Xin Nian Kuai ler" greetings.    And, of course, I am looking for someone to raise his/her hand to be the EO.  But,not now, let’s go for ideas first.  We close the brainstorm process on 10 Jan 2010.

The idea has been brought forth by Rosalind and Terence and some others. We had some territorial group formed before but it faded off into the horizon!

Before the Easterlies came up with some show, the Westerlies want to be the first to jump up the bandwagen. Those who are from the West may show your interest here. We would need to locate a place to meet or possibly a member’s home, whether for lunch or dinner?

What should I be when I grow up?

The year 2009 will very soon come to an end. All of us will be one year older and one year closer to death.

When we were young we look forward to a new year and cannot wait to be old enough to date and party. Than as we grow up, we compete for a position in society and accumulate wealth. Now that we have counted our money and keep ourselves comfortable enough to have the time to log in this forum, I wander what next.

Do we still need dreams and embition to give us drive and energy to live on. Many of us have worked hard when we were young, so that when we get old, we can be comfortable and enjoy life. But now that we are here, what is it that we should be enjoying. If we eat too much we die. If we exert ourselves too vigorously, we die. If we just rest and sleep we also die. There are many enjoyable things which the young do that our body cannot follow. But if we do nothing death comes earlier.

So what is it that we should wish for in 2010?

What I will be doing over the Christmas and New Year holidays?

In the next few days, I shall be flying to Bangkok, and begin a 10 day holiday, travelling Central Thailand.  Joining me will be my wife Nok and son Alex, Mary, Stephen and grandson Julyan.  Also a Thai family whose son is likely to study in Perth together with my son in 2011.  On Christmas day, early morning, we will drive to Phrae, and then westwards to Tak, near the Burmese border.  Along the way, we will stay in cool mountain resorts, river houses, and villagers houses.  It’s the time of the year, where we visit villagers and give toys and clothes away.

Christmas isnt widely celebrated in provincial Thailand, but the year end mood just catches on with the rich and poor, young and old.  Pently of drinking, singing, dancing and eating.  We shall finally reach Korat, North East Thailand where we will head for the rice fields, and celebrate my father-in-law’s 88th birthday.  It’s a poor village, where food is mainly leaves from the trees, fishes from the ponds and chickens running around the back of the house.

I am back on Jan 4, but I shall give you some live commentaries along the way.

Santa Claus is coming to town ….

A bad role model for children, promoted obesity, drunk-driving, speeding and an unhealthy lifestyle?? …therefore instead of gorging minced pies/brandy and idling in his sleigh, Santa should go on a diet and swap his reindeer for walking, jogging or cycling to deliver his presents hahaha (may be the new year resolution for Santa !).. Do share ur humorous lines and the perfect image of Santa to be then…. A Blessed and Merry X’mas to ALL too ** Oops : If Santa sneezes or coughs around 10 times a day, all the children who sit on his lap may end up with H1N1 flu as well as their Christmas presents" emoticon

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,

Cheers,

What the good things I did in year 2009?

Well, am I glad I joined Silverhars Club where I get to know so many new friends. Throughout this year I get to learn new dances and get to practice them in the various jams. A sort of exercise in wriggling my almost worn out body but it was so much fun.

The other good thing was to take up a challenge to reduce my intake of foods and perhaps lose some weight and in the process feeling and looking good!

Let’s hear from all of you.

Dan

Monthly Walk Sat 12 Dec Dairy Farm Nature Park

Date: 12 December 2009 (Saturday)

Meeting Place: Bukit Batok MRT nearby control station by 4.00pm sharp

Duration:  about 2 hours

For those who are driving, take the PIE and turn into the BKE.  Exit at Dairy Farm Road and travel for about 200m before turning left into Car Park A next to Salvation Army.    Be there at 4.30pm to join group who will be arriving by bus from Bukit Batok Central.

EOs for this walk:  Veronica Wong and Mary Tan

From Dairy Farm to Nature Park

The Dairy Farm Nature Park officially opened on 5 September 2009 has two sections.  One trail leads to the Wallace Education Centre and the other goes to the Singapore Quarry.  For this walk, we are taking the nature trail leading to the Wallace Education Centre.   It is the old Dairy Farm Road and fairly easy.

Formerly a cowshed, the building that is now the Wallace Education Centre also serves as a exhibition and learning facility for nature enthusiasts to meet and share their knowledge with others. The building is a nice example of architectural conservation where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Walk ends back at Car Park A and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Koufu Food Court in West Mall. There are stalls serving fried hokkien mee, pasta, Japanese cuisine, Indian food, vegetarian, yong tow foo mee, herbal soup, duck rice kway chap, fish soup, Korean food, roasted delight, tim sum, fresh fruits, juices, dessert and beverages.

See you at the walk!
