More Yunnan Trips
"Ni Hao"! Here is another trip date/itinerary to yunnan.
This year, you can also join trip in the month of June, August, October and December 09. Please email me for itinerary. Each august in yunnan has its season of fruits and weather which will decide where are the best destinations inside Yunnan. Of course I still need to give myself sometime to do my work. For the trip to go, we need around 8 pax.
Following is the tentative end april trip itinerary. Will be revised if necessary. If folks going on the trip are interested, I am open to abandon few destinations and accommodate to visit the Yuan Yang Rice Terrace in south Yunnan. According to Nature Products Network,
Yuan Yang Rice Terraces: Definitely the world’s most spectacular!
If you have seen the famous Banaue rice terraces of the Ifugaos in The Philippines and then visit the endless rice terraced mountains of Yuan Yang in Southern Yunnan, you regret having wasted time and gone through an unsafe trip on Luzon’s killer roads. Compared with Ifugao, the Hani people in Yuan Yang have much larger mountains and gorgeous sites to cultivate. Their endless irrigated terraces are giving a new meaning to paddy rice cultivation in Asia.
Anyway, email me at ethniceast@gmail.com for your inqueries etc.,

A Bangala mix with Hindi music disco
Oooh, I just love to dream. I just got out from a dinner at a posh Dhaka social club and now into a local Bangladeshi disco. Located on the 19th floor, the disco is packed with some 100 bangladesh professionals, who are just unwilling to go home. The time is 1055pm. The music is Bangladesh mixed with Hindi. You won’t believe it but the singer is 35 year old, from Dhaka, and extremely sexy and entertaining. With one keyboard, and a tabla, the mood was just right for a disco. Reminds me of the Bollywood disco I went to in Goa. Here, all hairs down. And everybody were as close as a sandwich pair with only a piece of cheese in between. if you think there is a recession in Dhaka, then I would say this city is 6 months behind the rest of the world. Red sarries, fast tempo, oohs, hi my friend, dim lights and bangla mad drinks. Gosh, I had 6 doubles of black label whisky, so this may not make sense. But, in my restrained body, I am thinking and dreaming of a Indian Bollywood mixed with Bangladesh disco for all of us. The music is loud and fantastic. How, cannot express in English. Oh, and not to forget, the cigar. When, aiyah, this year. Terence Seah
Karimun Island trip
Hi Friends
Since it is a majority decision, then this trip becomes a 1day/1night event. But I shall leave earlier, as planned a day beforehand, ie on Thursday 26th March.
As relayed to you at yesterday’s SCH meeting, Lily please call Indo Falcon-62783167 to reconfirm Departure time on Friday 27th as the ferry’s departure timetable do change to an hour or two later from published time at the last minute. Lily, do please sms/call me just before you guys depart from Habourfront so that I can be ready to receive your arrival at Tanjung Balai. I shall wear a bright red T-shirt, parking myself in the public-awaiting area just otside the Customs & Immigration concourse.
The fare (double than normal) is 10,000rupiahs($1.30/33) per person for the journey from ferry jetty to Hotel Maxi, a distance approximately from CK Tang to Centrepoint, Orchard Road. Will arrange for all vehicles to be air-conditioned. Lily, do please let me know by 25th March, the number of rooms needed.
Just to recap the day’s itinerary, say 30-45minutes after checking into hotel, we shall visit Gunong Karimun Waterfall. Our nasi-padang lunch will be in the vincinity of Hotel Maxi. The venue of the eveneing’s seafood dinner will be confirmed after I make further enquiry.
Lily, appreciate your help, and make sure travellers’ ferry tickets are bought Two-way.

Alan Tham – Profile
Hi folks,
I retired in 08 after 30 odd years with my last employer, an American company with it’s head office and main plant in Ft Worth, Texas. It was through our long time friend Sockie that my wife Anne, and I signed up as members very recently. We have a boy and a girl, and 2 grand children, ages 4 and 5.
I have all my life enjoyed the outdoors. First it was snorkeling & scuba diving, then for many years it was distance running. I have also done my fair share of cycling, camping, tramping and the up until the last few years, sea kayaking. I used to fish a lot, it was almost an obsession. Owing to recurring knee injuries, I am now confined to more passive activities like walking and line dance, and I play golf a couple of times each week. Country music still rank favorite even though I am beginning to learn enjoy Blues and Jazz. This last Christmas I bought myself an electric guitar on impulse. If I continue to put in an hour each day, I ought to be able to strum a few oldies by the coming Christmas! I tried singing, but have yet to find the right key!
My wife loves learning cooking, and we occasionally invite friends home for simple meals she prepares. She line dances as well.
We look forward to meeting and making new friends in the club.
Cheers

NAME TAG ANYONE????
Hi all SHCians’,
Just wanna say a big THANK YOU to you all for making me so welcome today at the SHC Monthly Gathering. Initially I was so worried like how to ‘gel’ myself in but thanks to Alice Seah, then Lee, then Kim then ‘Pao Kung’ then one after another, wow! I am certainly amazed how the group can just get to know each other so smoothly.
I indeed had a great time today and am looking forward to another gathering soon. A confession to make was that I did not bring along my name tag as I thought I would just wait for a blank sticker to write on, we had, but, kinda abit small la….so I asked Terence if I could make one for myself and was told that I could, thanks to Terence……SO, I am in the midst of designing one for myself…anyone need help??? I can do up something for you all…..you can let me know what is your preferred theme , eg. if you are a sporty person, then I can design something link to sports, or if you are a $$$$ person, then I can link it with a BIG DOLLAR NOTE on it, and etc etc etc la….You all very smart people, so would know what I am trying to tell you……ok???
Thanks and regards,
Anne Chua
Changi Village tonight, Sat 14 Mar 2009
From the newspapers, I have been reading about the old 70’s Night market at Changi Village, Block 5. It is open all Sat night; and I like to go and have a look this evening. I will be there at 9.30pm, stay at the market for about one hour, and then proceed to Changi Beach club for a drink at the club. If you come, I shall buy you a drink at the bar. I also have a bottle of whisky there, which has been sitting idle in the cabinet for some time. If I am not mistaken, you can also dance there. I plan to leave at 1am at Changi Beach Club.
I look forward to see you. Have your dinner first. If you come, please SMS me or email me.

So Patrick, next time, you have post on your own liao.. ok… Dolly
~ For Those Over 55 Years Old ~
Some recipients below 55 included : )
Read and get on with celebrating your life!
Time is like a river . . .
You cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow has passed and will never pass again.
– For those who are already 55, start practicing.
– For those almost 55, get ready.
– For those where 55 is a long way off, help your parents do it.
For Those Over 55 Years Old :
1. Focus on enjoying people, not on indulging in or accumulating material things.
2. Plan to spend whatever you have saved. You deserve to enjoy it and the healthy years you have left.
3. Live in the here and now, not in the yesterdays and tomorrows. It is only today that you can handle.
4. Enjoy your grandchildren (if blessed with any) but don’t be their full time baby sitter.
Don’t have any guilt about refusing to baby sit anyone’s kids, including your own grandkids.
Your parental obligation is to your children. After you have raised them into responsible adults,
5. Accept physical weakness, sickness and other physical pains. It is a part of the ageing process.
Enjoy whatever your health can allow.
6. Enjoy what you are and what you have right now. STOP working hard for what you do not have.
7. Enjoy your life with your spouse, children, grandchildren and friends.
Anyone who loves you for what you have will just give you misery.
8. Forgive and accept forgiveness. Forgive yourself and others.
Enjoy peace of mind and peace of soul.
Death is the beginning of a new and better life.
So, prepare yourself not for death but for a new life towards the realms of eternity.
You are the children of the universe.

Dinner on 25 April 2009 at the H.K. Best Soup Restaurant
Dear SHC Friends,
Do you believe in drinking soup as a culture for life longevity ? Well, the HongKongers and Southern Chinese in China have done it. As Chinese and especially the Cantonese, we were told by our mom, grandma, or even great grandma that drinking soup regularly is good for our body.
Basically, tonic soup is very nourishing to the soul, it improves blood circulations, boost energy and also increase one immunity level. It is also proven to be good for the overall well being.
There are many varieties of herbal soups. Do check this out if you want to know more on Chinese Herbal receipes on soup and its articles : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/index.html
(Disclaimer : By the way, the author is also Susan, but it’s not me……..)
Last weekend, about twenty of us (SHCians) attended a brief talk on the secret cum preparation of chinese herbal tonic soup at “H.K. BEST SOUP” Restaurant. The owner/chef (???) is from Hong Kong, a highly respectable cook and is specialized in double-boiled soup. He is also a famous column writer on soup preparation/cooking in our local Chinese newspaper, ????.
For those who are curious and also to experience what Chef ? have in store for us, we are organizing a Hong Kong (Cantonese) cuisine dinner in April. This special value for money menu which Chef ? quoted for us, should not be missed ! For $220.00 per table, we are having “Pen Cai” (??) as our main course and also a special double-boiled wild yam or "Huai Shan" (??) soup. That’s not all, please scroll down to see the list of food in the menu below. This works out to be $22.00 per person nett only.
Read more about "Huai Shan" and its goodness here : http://herbal.recipes.googlepages.com/articles_30.html
(Note : for those not familiar (including me !)
“Pen Cai” (??) is the next popular dish after “Buddha Jumps Over The Wall” – ???)

Monthly walk: Sat 14Mar, PLR 4
TO the Daring, Bold, Adventurous!
This morning, from my windows I see the grey sky and I said a prayer… now the sun is up and shining! THIS is the Day that the L… has made!
The last 2 days the weather has been clement!
GET SET, READY, GO!!!!!
see you this afternoon at 4pm, Blk 259 Bt Panjang
(Update: 14March09 11:16am)
Dear SHCians! We have come to our last PipeLine Ramble! We have scaled up walls, cross fences, jumped across ‘canals’…… PLR4 might be the toughest of all because of certain challenges, yet to take on!This trail leads us through green pastures; give your legs a good workout as you climb from 1 slope to the next… each steeper than the 1 before. At last, on top of a slope, standing on a small space enough for 2; to take a breather ….. turned, look back,,,,,, a ‘gasp’; Wow! so steep!! Reality dawns; a smile broke forth with glee……. I DID IT!!!?
In PLR2 we walked on a pipeline, a small ‘section’. Someone had asked: Can we walk the entire length? Such a chance is HERE!
Challenge: walk ON the entire length of a huge pipe! No turning back as it is the only way to the opposite side.

Hi All:
Just like to like to tickle your funny bone.
Amidst these days of gloom and doom we need to create some laughter………Enjoy…….. Ha ha he he
To: All Staff,
As you know, the realities of the downturn have hit home and I am forced to introduce the following cost-cutting measures to help shore up our beloved company. I know you will understand that the pain is temporary and the gains will be there for all of us to reap when the company comes through these difficult times stronger… and ready to ride the next big wave. So with immediate effect, all staff will be required to adhere to the following:
a. The cups on the two vending machines are to be recycled. Annabelle has already sterialised them.
b. Sabbatical leave: Executives booked for New York will now go to Kukup in Johor Bahru instead. Senior executives can go further – up to Yong Peng.
c. Our chalet lease in Pulau Ubin has ended. However, as the management takes a keen interest in staff welfare, we have arranged with Francis (from Admin Dept) to rent out one of his rooms at Blk 923, Pasir Ris Drive. His flat was chosen for its proximity to the sea and you can still see Ubin from the window.
d. Entertainment claims: Staff will be required to go for a 30-min demonstration by Raj from Finance Dept, who will show you how to withdraw your credit card slowly from your wallet (58 secs), so that others at a business lunch will inadvertently beat you to it when the bill comes.
e. The Valentine’s Day white chocolates (Deluxeur) which I gave out in January : Those of you who have yet to open the box, please return them expiry date: Dec 2009).
f. Monthly Best Employee Award : The $1000 cash award will now be replaced by a box of Deluxeur white chocolates.
g. Annual Best Employee Award : The 14-day Disneyland/Hawaii tour and solid gold Rolex Oyster watch will be replaced by TWO boxes of Deluxeur white chocolates.
h. Medical: The Oxfordshire-Hopkins Medical Group will no more be on our panel. Annabelle will give you the address of Hong Tong Hong Medical Hall in Sungei Road. Bring you company pass for a 10% discount.
i. Country Club Memberships : Senior executives must return their membership cards to Annabelle, who will then register your name with Bishan Community Centre.
j.. Transport Allowance : No reduction of rate! However, it will be paid on alternate months.
k. Gifts for clients : New choices. The Bohemian Crystal list will be replaced by the one from 7-eleven.
l. Annual Dinner & Dance : No change (March 20, yay!), but the venue is switched from The Ritz-Carlton to the void deck of Annabelle’s flat in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
m. Bonus : This time, staff welfare comes first! Instead of the usual amount, we raised it up to $2 million. Each employee will be given a Singapore Sweep ticket. The draw is on March 5.

VALENTINE DAY ORIGIN
Here’s something for some debate if anyone really knows how, when and where Valentine Day originated !!
If You Observe Valentine’s Day, You Are Observing An Ancient Indian Practice
In spite of what you have been told by everyone, the truth is that Valentine’s Day originated hundreds of years ago in India, and to top it all, in the state of Gujarat !!!
It is a well known fact that Gujarati men, specially the Patels, continually mistreated and disrespected their wives (Patelianis). One fine day, which happened to be the 14th day of February, one brave Patelani, having had enough "torture" by her husband, finally chose to rebel by beating him up with a Velan (rolling pin to make chapattis).
Yes….the same Velan which she used daily, to make chapattis for him…. only this time, instead of the dough, it was the husband who was flattened.
This was a momentous occasion for all Gujarati women and the revolt soon spread, like wild fire, with thousands of housewives beating up their husbands with the Velan. There was an outburst of moaning "chapatti-ed" husbands all over Anand and Amdavad.
The Patel men-folk quickly learnt their lesson and started to behave more respectfully with their Patelanis.
Thereafter, on 14th February every year, the womenfolk of Gujaratwould beat up their husbands to commemorate that eventful day – the wives having the satisfaction of beating up their husbands with the Velan and the men having the supreme joy of submitting to the will of the women they loved.
Soon the Gujju men realized that in order to avoid this ordeal they need to present gifts to their wives….they brought flowers and sweets. This is how the tradition – Velan time – began.
As Gujarat fell under the influence of Western culture, the ritual soon spread to Britainand many other Western countries, specifically, the catch words ‘Velan time’ !!! In course of time, this got anglicized to ‘Velantime’ and then to ‘Valentine’. And thereafter, 14th of February came to be known as Valentine’s Day and now you know the true story of Valentine’s day.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND !!
Back to Simple Basic Cooking.
Greetings from Sydney. We have just returned from a short "balek kampong" trip to Singapore and we were amazed to find such a great varities of fusion food between eastern and western food available to us. We did enjoy these new food versions but what we missed were simple traditional foods that filled us with memories of the tradition kitchens, with its preparations for special feast days and the ritual of everyday family meals.
We are awared that food preparations and cooking stlyes have evolved with the hectic lifestyle and needs of the younger generation. But unless we the silverHairs passed it to them (on the presumption that they wanted to learn) these traditional food and cooking secrets will be lost and slipped beyond the realm of recall.
My wife is currently compiling a collection of simple home cookings and recipes that are normally handled down from parents to children through the generations by word of mouth. We are writing this post to ask for your help and share with us your family cooking secrets so that we can preserve the true flavour of the original food for the young ones to keep.

That’s when she shot him…
On their wedding night, the young bride approached her new husband and asked for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state, her husband readily agreed.
This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 30 years, with him thinking that it was a cute way for her to afford new clothes and other incidentals that she needed.
Arriving home around noon one day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state. During the next few minutes, he explained that his employer was going through a process of corporate downsizing and he had been let go. It was unlikely that, at the age of 59, he’d be able to find another job.
Calmly, his wife handed him a bank book which showed more than 30 years of steady deposits and interest totalling nearly $1 million. Then she showed him certificates of deposits issued by the bank which were worth over $2 million. She explained that she had ‘charged’ him for sex and these were the results of her savings and investments.
The husband was so astounded he could? barely speak. Finally he found his voice and blurted out, ‘If I’d had any idea what you were doing, I would have had sex only with you’.
That’s when she shot him.
MEN just don’t know when to keep their damn mouth SHUT!!!>>> sometimesI
I couldn’t resist sharing this story. We are living in precarious time. In the midst of a recession what can one do to survive. What lessons can we learn here?
A prudent wife, and a faithful or a wayward husband? A tip on a saving investment with compound interest, is it beyond us?
The power of the tongue that can bless us or dangerously hurt us!
