It took me months to write a little about myself on this site as I was having difficulties to log in to the post page, I thank the President and Founder of SHC Mr Terence Seah for creating this club and the website where every one of us could write about ourselves and comment on certain posts.

Well, I am a lady who is shy but was a successful business woman from the 1970s to 1990s, have seen lots of things in my life, not very active in outdoor space due to lack of time and commitment, had a little set back in my life but I believe it’s a plan by our creator for something better to happen may be.

Right now, I am a kindergarten teacher of 13 years after I became single again, a great career switch though but I feel great achievements when I see my weaker students became stronger and I have made a great difference in helping the families of my students to become stronger, too. I am still upgrading myself by taking up courses 3 times a week where there are exams and assignment, hope to come out from the kindergarten setting and set up my own tuition centre one day which is my dream.

I am a deep, no nonsense, introspective and analytical person, I can accept nothing to face situations & people, and I am fascinated by the mysterious and unknown. I enjoy periods of solitude in peaceful surroundings and need time to study and reflect. I love ocean, it has a powerful attraction to me but pity that I do not know how to swim.

The study of philosophy, psychology, scientific research, Meta physics or religion appeals to me and I am scientific in my approach to truth.

I have been to the monthly gathering once in May I think, I was overwhelmed by the large crowd, though I did not really know many of them yet except a few where we have exchanged our contact numbers. I met my long lost friend Mary Chan, it was nice to meet her, and I have met the founder Terence, too, he is a very nice man indeed.

I have a robot to vacuum my house.  I’m not joking  .. it is the irobot Roomba model 550.  It vacuums my floors by itself and goes back to the dock to recharge when battery is exhausted. 

When the irobot went on sale last year in Singapore it was costly.  The features were quite basic and I did not think that it would work properly and expected frequent breakdowns. 

When I saw a more advanced model for US$225 at Costco in the States, I could not resist getting one to try out.  Tested it in my daughter place and found that it really works.  It meticulously gathers up specks of dust from everywhere it can access.  I have been using it for the last three months here, and there are no hiccups.  Touch wood.

For those of you who interested – a more expensive model is available in Singapore – Roomba model 560 with similar features – costs about S$930. Or you can get it on the internet for a much lower price.  Coconut Water Information

The English name coconut, first mentioned in English print in 1555, comes from Spanish and Portugese word coco, which
means ‘monkey face.’ Spanish and Portugese explorers found a
resemblance to a monkey’s face in the three round indented markings or
‘eyes’ found at the base of the coconut. On the Nicobar Islands of the
Indian Ocean , whole coconuts were used as currency for the purchace of
goods until the early part of the twentieth century.

Coconuts
are the fruit of the coconut palm, botanically known as cocos nucifera,
with nucifera meaning ‘nut-bearing.’ The fruit-bearing palms are native
to Malaysia , Polynesia and southern Asia, and are now also prolific in
South America , India , the Pacific Islands , Hawaii and Florida . The
light, fibrous husk allowed it to easily drift on the oceans to other
areas to propagate. In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpa vriksha,
meaning ‘tree which gives all that is necessary for living,’ since
nearly all parts of the tree can be used in some manner or another. The
coconut itself has many food uses, including milk, meat, sugar and oil
as well as functioning as its own dish and cup. The husk was also
burned for fuel by natives, but today a s! eed fibre called coir
is taken from the husk and used to make brushes, mats, fishnets, and
rope. A very potent fermented toddy or drink is also made from the
coconut palm’s sap. Coconut oil,
a saturated fat made fro! m dried coconut meat, is used for commercial
frying and in candies and margarines, as well as in non-edible products
such as soaps and cosmetics.

Although it takes up to a year
for coconuts to mature, the trees bloom up to thirteen times a year, so
fruit is constantly forming yielding a continuous harvest year-round.
An average harvest from one tree runs about 60 coconuts, with some
trees yielding three times that amount. The coconut’s name is a bit of
a misnomer, since it is botanically classified as a drupe and not a
nut.. It is the largest seed known.

If
you’ve ever opened a fresh coconut, you will have seen the thin, opaque
almost clear coconut juice or water which has a slight almond flavor.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not
the coconut milk. However, the water is consumed as a drink fresh from
the coconut by many, and it can also be used in recipes.

It’s

Well, I am tempted to start swimiing session on a Sunday morning from 9.00-11.00am. Not many will go for the vigorous badminton because of niggling pain to the knees!

My name is Josephine and although I have been following the activities and postings of SHC members from time to time, I have not joined a single SHC event.

Have been travelling quite a fair till recently and have decided to post my profile and will likely come for the SHC Monthly Meeting this month.

Just a bit about myself, I am still gainfully employed and am keen to learn everything on retirement and how to age gracefully and live meaningfully in a society like ours.

I think it is always good to widen my circle of friends and get to know more people. So hope to see most of you on 17 Aug 08.

Dear friends,
 
I was delighted to read about this club in the ST 20 July 2008.  A check on the website tells of a vibrant group of happy people with diverse interests and lots of energy.  This is just what I have been looking for since I retired from work a few years ago – an opportunity for like-minded people to gather and make good use of the leisure that we have worked so long and hard for.
   
I am 62 with two grown-up children.  I have spent more than 20 years as an educator and10 years in publicity publishing.  When my younger child graduated a few years ago, I decided it was time to quit my formal job and for other things in life. My interests are quite sedentary – reading, experimental cooking, meditation.  My husband, 64, and I have done some leisurely traveling and did some ‘serious’ courses the last few years.  Terence’s idea of short stays in Thailand and the neighboring countries is appealing.
 
I have been exploring the concept of “ Aging in place”.  It is a term used in the States for the system that caters to elderly people who prefer to grow old in the comfort of their homes, versus living in institutions. This involves preparing their homes for convenient use as they age; having the relevant essential services, like, house care and medical care within easy call.  With the system in place, the elderly can continue to live independently in familiar surroundings and friends for as long as life permits them.  Any one here among us, is interested in exploring this concept with me?  I will draw up a framework for discussion.
 
Congratulations to the pioneers for bringing forth the SilverHairs Club and the energetic members who sustain it. I look forward to your next gathering.  I am due for a knee operation this afternoon and hope it will recover enough for me to join all of you on the 17th.  Otherwise I can read all about the meeting on the Forum.

Tan Chin Boon – Profile

Hi folks

Profile of a new kid on the block – Tan Chin Boon

At last, it took me two days to find this empty site just to add in my personal profile as "demanded" by our President and founder of SHC Mr. Terence Seah. So, to begin with, why not modify this website from time to time to make it more user-friendly. That’s my first comment for the day. See, I told you giving my FRANK thoughts sometimes hurt and there may be repercussion. Ok, sock it to me, pal.

That’s my basic attitude to you, but back to serious business i.e. my profile. Now, what can I say about myself? Oh, I’m a guy of course. Ex-banker, now happily retired and "gainfully unemployed". Spending my time on golf 4-5 days a week, two days on gym, internet news and trading, emails, walking my favourite pet dog Bam-Bam practically every day, cycling with him in a ragged bag on the handlebar,  listening to jazz music, and killing time on my 42" plasma TV with solid HBO, Star Movies, AXN, ESPN, National Geographic, Discovery, etc and a host of reality shows. But primarily to keep fit and trim at all times.

For the guys, I participate in Mahjong and Russian poker sporadically. Apart from golf, I used to bowl (pretty good at it but no longer), take active part in big walk, cycling on my mountain bike for miles on end but age forbids that nowadays, swimming at the beaches overseas while holidaying. I love to travel and did quite a bit too, to various countries mostly on own itinerary. In fact, WAYN website has me registered for travel up to 14% of the countries in the world. Of late, I travel with golfing friends to nearby countries like Thailand, China, Philippines, and Indonesia, the last being Guangzhou in January. So, any of you guys plan any travel programme with golf in mind, do let me know. BTW,  I travel more on budget airlines nowadays.

For the ladies, I am no longer the old-fashioned MBA, but a triple A (available Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace) for karaoke, movie shows (only the blockbusters like the Red Cliff and The Mummy – tomb of the dragon emperor. Prefer to watch HBO for free), group gathering for makan, and now at SHC, social dance.  I’m not sure about golfing with ladies, coz they tee off at ladies’ teebox and you can’t talk the men’s talk, ya. Karaoke wise, I croak only the older English songs like Barry Manilow’s hits, and the newer Chinese songs like Jackie Chan. Normally I let the crowd sing first to feel the vibes before I select the appropriate songs. So bear with me, ladies.

There is something about SHC that attracts me. First of all, I wasn’t made aware of its existence through S.T. ads but a chance meeting and chatting for the first time with Steven Chan at a dog show 2 days ago. Browsing through the various forums at the SHC website, I note there are a lot of vibrancies and cheerfulness among the in-crowd. There are lots of activities to participate in apparently, and you ladies are such a wild and enthusiastic bunch. I was taken aback by the response when I chipped in my little comments here and there, people who don’t even know me or what I might look like. But they sound like old friends already with their spontaneous dialogue. This is so different from my usual groups like the NUS alumni, Dunearnites, and Ex-UOB colleagues with whom the usual activities are monthly gathering over lunch or dinner, occasional outings or karaoke, but that’s about it, no dialogue through forum on website, no active involvement to stimulate the mind, and any activities are mainly individual arrangments.

But there again, it’s too soon to judge the validity of this statement. I shall have to wait and see what goes on in the coming months at SHC. Basically, I’m a BIG BORE!emoticon

Some tips on transportation to ECP:

  • There are several underground tunnels leading from one side of the road of the ECP to the other side (sea-front). The one, most convenient, leading to BURGER KING is situated between Blk 14 n 18 at Marine Terrace, off Marine Parade Rd. From Marine Parade Rd bus stop, it takes 15/20mins to walk towards the tunnel. Bus services operating along Marine Parade Rd are: 31, 36, 43, 48, 55, 76, 135, 197, 853 with additional services: 13, 16, 76A, 135A, 196 n 646 operating along the same road towards Changi.
  • For those who are taking public buses to Marine Parade Road, stop at BLK 58/57, cut across the void deck of HDB estate to Marine Terrace towards BLK 14/18, thus facing the TUNNEL leading to BURGER KING outlet.

Tips on Burger King at ECP:

  • There is only ONE MacD at East Coast Parkway, next door is Hongkong Restaurant to the left and Bowling Alley to the right of MacD. The one mentioned at Big Splash is KFC, not MacD. Talking of direction facing is usually standing at the main road/srvice road, facing the outlet.

Rollerblading….anyone?

Hi, my name is Stella, 48 years old.  Main hobbies are swimming, cycling, rollerblading, mahjong and reading.  I am looking for friends who are interested to go rollerblading.  I am not a professional in this sport.  Just started sometimes in October last year and have not been rollerblading for about 2 to 3 months due to work commitment.  Wanted to start again.  Its a good form of exercise.

Death

Now that we are in the 7th Moon period when the dead is walking among us. I wander how they are. Perhaps they have their monthly meetings just like SHC or do they do it once a year and always on earth. Do they have a blog to decide where to meet? Who is their blog administrator?

Death is for sure. Unfortunately we do not know when, that is why we have a hard time planning for retirement. It will be so much easier for us to decide how much to spend each month if we know when we don’t need the money any more. Most of us end up living poor and dieing rich.

  • At which stage do you consider yourself dead?
  • When you heart stops beating?
  • When your brain stops processing signals?
  • When you cannot recognize you spouse and children?
  • When you defecate on yourself because you are not able to go to the loo? or
  • When you stop enjoying sex?

Modern medicine is able to give us longer life. But how many needles and tubes do they need to insert into you before you consider yourself dead? Are we living a longer life or just dieing a slower death?

Most of us do not fear death but are afraid of pain. When we are enjoying, the Teochews call it ‘Hor Si’ which literally means ‘good death’. Should we than concerntrate on how to have a good death rather than long life?

We are all over 45 years old, some of us may live over another 45 years but we WILL die. I think it is time to learn how to have a ‘Hor Si’. We should do it like planning another holiday. I always enjoy my holidays.

Mid Autumn Free Gang Bang, @ NSRCC 12 & 13 Sept

Hi all , 

The Bungalow at NSRCC will be an open house to all SHC members to drop in anytime just to gang bang with all other SHC members.  So feel free to drop in with a few other members etc.  Come and bring whatever you want to share , either a story, a scrabble game, carrom game, card games , mah jong, titbits, etc.

It will be free except for the events that are already organised as follows:-

  • Friday Pm – Golf game at NRSRCC,
  • Friday Pm – Bungalow is totally free – for anything, scrabble , maj jong ,etc  
  • FRiday Eve – Love of Country Music and Line Dance Event, $5 free coffee,tea, and Meal (Mini Potluck bring something to share)
  • Sat Pm – ‘Hair Cutting Class’ from 2 to 4 pm  , $5 free coffee , tea , 
  • Sat Night (inside Bungalow) – Social Dance and Line Dance, etc 
  • Sat Night ( Beach outside) – Free and carefree Pot Luck and Camping event, bring your tent, lantern, fishing rod and join Terence , Douglas and others.  There will be a campfire (lantern) sing a long session till early hours. BYOB and snacks, etc. 

Only charge will be $5 for each Indoor event for the whole day, except golf and other activities provided by the club like bowling, canoeing, etc.  Chalet rooms are available for bookings. 

But for anyone who is free and just want to drop in with a group of frends to play cards, scrabble, carrom,  or mah jong please feel free to do so and just drop in and have this gang bang.  Terence may have an orgy at the beach in the wee hours, whatever that means.

 Please take note, I will not be making any money from this event and whatever is collected hopefully can pay for the rental of the bungalow which will amount to about $500 , with GST and electricity, water chargers.  I am willing to cover this total cost as part of giving back what I have enjoyed from SHC for the last 2 years.  However what I hope is that what i can collect back can be used to book another chalet again for Dec, in this way I hope that there can be a sort of Chalet activity every quarterly, that is close to being free to all SHC members. 

So for all those SHC members who want to have a place to share your interests, games or stories in a nice resort enrvironment, please feel free to do so. It will be free, but you have to give way to the main events, by moving to other areas, like the swimming pool, beach area, etc around the resort. But if there is nothing going on in the bungalow you are free to enjoy the air-con.   Cheers.

The truth about egg yolks
 
Many people throw away the egg yolk because they think that’s where all the nasty fat and cholesterol is". This is a perfect example of how confused most people are about nutrition.

In a world full of misinformation, somehow most people now mistakenly think that the egg yolk is the worst part of the egg, when in fact, the YOLK IS THE HEALTHIEST PART OF THE EGG!

By throwing out the yolk and only eating egg whites, you’re essentially throwing out the most nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich, vitamin and mineral loaded portion of the egg. The yolks contain so many B-vitamins, trace minerals, vitamin A, folate, choline, lutein, and other powerful nutrients… it’s not even worth trying to list them all.

In fact, the egg whites are almost devoid of nutrition compared to the yolk. Even the protein in egg whites isn’t as powerful without the yolks to balance out the amino acid profile and make the protein more bio-available. Not to even mention that the egg yolks from free range chickens are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Yolks contain more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and panthothenic acid of the egg. In addition, the yolks contain all of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg, as well as all of the essential fatty acids.

And now the common objection I get all the time when I say that the yolks are the most nutritious part of the egg…"But I heard that whole eggs will skyrocket my cholesterol through the roof ." No, this is FALSE!

First of all, when you eat a food that contains a high amount of dietary cholesterol such as eggs, your body down-regulates it’s internal production of cholesterol to balance things out. On the other hand, if you don’t eat enough cholesterol, your body simply produces more since cholesterol has tons of important functions in the body.

And here’s where it gets even more interesting…There are indications that eating whole eggs actually raises your good HDL cholesterol to a higher degree than LDL cholesterol, thereby improving your overall cholesterol ratio and blood
chemistry.

And 3rd… high cholesterol is NOT a disease! Heart disease is a disease…but high cholesterol is NOT.

So I hope we’ve established that whole eggs are not some evil food that will wreck your body… instead whole eggs are FAR superior to egg whites.

Also, your normal supermarket eggs coming from mass factory farming just don’t compare nutritionally with organic free range eggs from healthy chickens that are allowed to roam freely and eat a more natural diet.

I recently compared eggs I bought at the grocery store with a batch of eggs I got at a farm stand where the chickens were free roaming and healthy. Most people don’t realize that there’s a major difference because they’ve never bought real eggs from healthy chickens… The eggs from the grocery store had pale yellow yolks. On the other hand, the healthier free range eggs had deep orange colored yolks indicating much higher nutrition levels and carotenoids.

So next time a health or fitness professional tells you that egg whites are superior, you can quietly ignore their advice knowing that you understand the REAL deal about egg yolks.
 
One more thing about eggs… I read a study recently that compared groups of people that ate egg breakfasts vs groups of people that ate cereal or bagel based breakfasts. The results of the study showed that the egg eaters lost or maintained a healthier bodyweight, while the cereal/bagel eaters gained weight.
 
It was hypothesized that the egg eaters actually ate less calories during the remainder of the day because their appetite was more satisfied compared to the cereal/bagel eaters who would have been more prone to wild blood sugar swings and food cravings.

Drummama/Drumpapa

Couple of years back, I saw a prog on TV, showcasing some of the activities that Korean ladies in their 50’s and 60’s do for their recreation. Some breakdance, some hiphop, some play soccer, some pounding away on large drums etc . I find the latter interesting. Was wondering if we in SHC could form such a group of drummers. The drums used are similar to those big drums used by the “bigheads” whn they go tomp cheng, tomp cheng, tomp tomp cheng..But of course those ladies play a differenct music score.

Playing such drums is good exercise. Arm muscles get toned, thereby keeping the ugly “wings” at bay..:-)
Also very good for destressing..just paste a pic of whatever is stressing u on the drum and u jus hit it hit it hit itwith your sticks..:-)))

3 men go into a motel. The man behind the desk said the room is $30, so each man paid $10 and went to the room.

A while later the man behind the desk realized that the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys’ room with $5.

On the way, the bellboy couldn’t figure out how to split the $5 evenly amongst the 3 men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27, add the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29

What happen to the other $1 ???

Travel in Autumn

Dear all at SilverHairsClub,

Anyone care to share their 2 cents worth on driving from New York to Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Niagara in the parks, returning from Toronto, Coastal drive to Ottawa and straight back to NYC.   Would appreciate some advice as to which one or two of the regions to skip so that we can drive more leisurely.   Our main objective is to go the Niagara Falls, and would love to catch to autumn leaves along the scenic drive and if our planned route is ideal for a 11 days trip.

Hi everybody

I just come to know about this club from an article in the ST. and feel that it is a good  idea to come together to engage in some healthy activities.  Just a brief introduction of myself. I retired in Jan 2005 after almost 40 years in the teaching service. To keep myself mentally active, I give tuition classes at CDAC centres and some private tuition in secondary school maths.

My interests are mainly travelling, food,and light exercises to keep fit. My wife has also joined the club. She will be retiring in 2 weeks’ time. We have 2 grown-up sons one of whom is married and living on their own. We feel this is the time for us to sit back and relax, enjoy life and making new friends of similar interests.

We hope to meet many friends in the club and look forward to the coming get together in Oct. In the meantime have a good week ahead.

I just joined as member 24 July 2008 . Managed to meet a number of members, last Sunday 27th July at Scorebot at Bali Lane. Later proceed to impromptu K session together Andrew Goh, Ronald Goh, Ron & Alice Lai, Sherleen, Lynn, Anne Lim, SK & Tim L. 6 of us even went for dinner together at Suntec food court. Very enjoyable, look forward to future gatheringsemoticon.

My hobbies are cycling, singing and travelling.

Short golfing Trip to Malaysia, Bintan or Thailand

Hi Tian Soo, Anthony, Janet, SH and all golfing and travel enthusiast. 

I
am game for a day game, or a short overnight trip.  My suggestions
will be at Malacca , "Tiara" or Genting ‘Awana’ , Banang in Batu
Pahat.  Also looking forward to playing in Cameron or Fraser Hill
or any other courses.

Longer trips to Thailand can be considered
too, and one golf course I have in mind is the one at the River Kwai,
really countryside and remote but you can visit the Tiger TEmple and
dine on the river cruise.

By the way our first SHC golf
competition is on at NSRCC on the 12th Sept and we have 2 flights
almost fillled up already, with one available slot. But if anyone else
wants to join in we can still get another flight however it will under
Tian Soo’s guest rate not the Chalet’s rate .

So start swinging
your clubs at the range but most important have fun too. If anyone
wants to meet to share some tips at the range I am game for such fun,

HI to all the SHC members.  I had briefly joined the SHC club last year but only by email with the SHC administrator then.  But having received regular emails and updates of the SHC club, I am honoured to join in as a new member to your big family.

I am 51 years, married with two kids, one age 19 and one age 13, a girl and a boy.  I love jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming and travelling.  My husband and I jog regularly 3 times a week at the east coast park.  I stay at Siglap area and had worked with two big banks for 15 years before I stayed at home to tuition my 2 kids.  I had worked with the consumer bank and the merchant bank.

I admired the energy, the fun and jokes, all the general information posted on the SHC website by the members  and I enjoyed reading them, and at the same time learning so much general knowledge.  I too hope to be able to share mine given the opportunity to do so.

So, I hope to jog my way to your Aug meeting at the east coast park to meet the members there.
