When you read or browse through newspapers in the morning, you will agree with me that the world is racked by fighting, killing, scam, fraudulence, hostility , the world peace is beyond our control but there is plenty an individual can do, any input?

T&T (Tips & Tricks) corner
I hope this T&T corner will be filled with Tips & Tricks and useful information that may be of help to other SHCians.
Please feel free to contribute & share here. Retrieving such information here would also be convenient when needed in future.
Are you being appreciated?
Caregiving can be such a rewarding experience, looking after your family is your duty, but that aspect is somethings hard and tedious to focus on when you feel your efforts aren’t being recognized.
Do you feel fully appreciated by the person or persons you care for? Do your siblings and other family members appreciate all you’re doing? If so, what do they do to show your appreciation? If not, what do you wish they’d do?"
Share your thoughts and experiences……………………
President Charity Cup on Ch5 this Sunday 7.30pm

and you stand to win a token of appreciation.
First 3 correct entries to send to my mail jtan04@singnet.com.sg will win.
The mystery prizes are to be collected PERSONALLY on SHC Monthly Gathering Day on
31-Oct-2009 at SAFRA Mount Faber between 5pm to 9pm.
All are eligible except the 2 participants themselves.
Answer is not to be given in this post please.

Joke of the Day
Joke of the Day:
Ah Pek and Ah Ma were lying in bed one night.
The husband was falling asleep but the wife felt romantic and wanted to talk. She said, "You used to hold my hand when we were courting."
Wearily, he reached across, held her hand for a second
and tried to get back to sleep.
A few moments later she said, "Then, you used to kiss me."
Mildly irritated, he reached across,
gave her a peck on the cheek and settled down to sleep.
Thirty seconds later she said, "Then, you used to bite my neck."
Angrily, he threw back the bed covers, got out of bed and walk away.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"To get my teeth lah!"
Scam Alert!!!
Somehow my e-mail account and mobile telephone were "cloned". Scammers used them to send e-mails and/or sms messages to the contacts in my e-mail contacts’ and mobile telephone’s listings that I was stranded in London and needed financial assistance urgently. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!. Presently, I am in Singapore and was ever away in London.
If you have received, purportedly from me, an e-mail or sms respective to the above, PLEASE, PLEASE JUST IGNORE IT AS IT"S A SCAM.
My sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. Thank you, one and all, for your kind understanding.
Best regards

Strong EarthQuake in Padang
I have received many calls, sms and emails after the strong earthquake in Padang on 30 Sept 2009 evening to check whether I was in Padang or get hurt or not. I appreciate your concern and the care and love you people shower on me. I would like to post it so that I can inform more people about what is happening in Padang especially to SHC who have travelled to Padang and Bukit Tinggi.
For the past 4 days I have been calling our lobster friends Mr Tham and Ms Ho frantically on their mobiles and home lines but not accessible. To my great relief I received a call this morning from Mr Tham and Ms Ho saying that they are safe and are in Solok now. Their house in Padang had collapsed totally. Luckily the workers have not returned from Hari Raya and nobody is hurt. They told me that the quake is so strong that it was literally shaking constantly. Although they are seasoned by the on and off quakes in the past, this time was so strong that they were scared and terrified.
The hotel which Terence and I stayed in Padang, Hotel Mariani (oposite Hotel Bumiminang) is collapsed totally. One Singaporean, John Lee was buried in the rubble for 25 hours when Hotel Mariani collapsed. He was alive and rescued. Long live to him.
We hope and pray that Padang (and many other surrounding towns) and its people will overcome this natural disaster. Amen.

http://www.safra.sg/data/resources/images/MF%20Clubhouse/MF_getting_there.jpg
Monthly Gathering: 5.00-9.00pm
The program for the night will includes karoeke singing and impromptu line and social dancing. There is something about SHCians, most of them like to dance. It is a good form of relaxation and having fun together! Music will be played throghout the night while in some corner new friends and old will chit-chat away.
At the last gathering we have a fantastic night!. Though it was sardine-packed, we enjoyed ourselves. When most of the members left for home, there was a group of die-hard members who dance the night away when the music was played!
Those who have booked a table for the Flea mart, do indicate here whether you are staying for the Monthly Gatherings.

Calling all ladies who are good cooks!
My apologies to the guys for stipulating ‘ladies only’ in this thread. Perhaps, later on, the guys can be included.
In the meantime, what I would like to learn are more home-cooked dishes. I have some not-too-bad dishes that I won’t mind teaching.
Are there any ladies who are willing to share their yummy recipes or even hold a demonstration at her home or some other venue?
Are there SHC ladies who are keen on cooking?
Thank you
Ros
JB Orphanage.. Donation & Charity
I am thinking of organising a visit to JB orphanage (date to be confirmed later) but prior to this, I have a mission to achieve thru’ collection/donation from the generous SHC members:
1. Old toys (must be at least in working/presentable condition) but currently white elephants in your storeroom – care to donate them as I am sure these children will definitely be very happy to receive them.
2. Old but still wearable toddlers to teenagers’ clothings – These children will need these for sure but please do not include g-strings or bikinis as these children don’t need them now lor..
3. Daily necessities (consumables and non-consumables) but Dolly is not too keen to get these here in SG as these might create unnecessary stoppage at the JB custom and it would be much convenient to get these in JB itself..
I am always thinking taking some photos of this orphanage but somehow is always slip of my mind but will definitely make an effort to take these photos next time when I visited them again.
So, if any of you have the above to donate to them, please let me know by posting your comments here and I will get in touch with you on the arrangement to collect these items at your convenience.
Hope to hear from you soon.. Cheers.. Sam (Huat huat huat)

Remember the cabaret days and nightouts at the nightclub?
A few days ago, we had our Sep monthly gathering; the event was so much fun. And all of a sudden, I thought of having a nightout at a nightclub and cabaret. Would it be nice if we are all part of this theme? Some of us may have bad experiences; but I hope you will look at what I am going to write next in good light and good old memories; and not think that I am some bad hat.
Some of us have frequented nightclubs in our good young days. For men, it could be a good night out with some young hostesses. For businessmen and businesswomen, a night out at the cabaret can bring in that difficult deal. And, for some men, downing a bottle of martell helped drown sorrows and sad memories.
Imagine yourself one night, during the late 70’s, on the 9th floor of Majestic nightclub and cabaret in Taipei. You had your car valet-parked by an attendant, and then you are up the lift with 3 other men. Very quickly, the door hostess addressed you as Ta Ker, and lead you to a round sofa. After you ordered your drinks, the mamasan came along, introduced a few ladies to you and your associates. Within a few minutes, everybody settled down.
Not very far in front of our table was a stage, with blinking lights. Mei Hua, top singer at Majestic nightclub was singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCPYNcijVkE. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In the nightness, on the dance floor, was a group of men and women holding one another, around the waist and neck. After the second song, the numbers changed, and my partner just walked away, and I went back to my table.
The mamasan kept introducing us to other ladies; we kept drinking and dancing throughout the night, listening to nostalgic songs. Sometimes, we drank too much, and the bouncers would help us to our car, but not without paying the bill and tips. It was always a night to remember.
Again, I must warn that this is a bad habit of mine. I like to dream and when we have enough people to share the dream, we make that dream happen. You can take one of the roles, as mamasan, dance hostesses, businessman, lady guest, door hostesses, singer or drinks pourer. You can also be nightclub owner. And, for the men and ladies who have never been to a nightclub cabaret, you can come as guest, make sure you are escorted. Share with us your experience too.
Take this as a fun nostagic evening, among friends, a chance to show how naughty we were during our younger days. An opportunity to show how seductive and sexy we can be, an opportunity to sing love and hate Chinese songs from the 70’s, a chance to be a bitchy mamasan, and for some men, to show off how big the wallets are and how big the tummies can get. We can adjourned to the nearby teochew muay stall after midnight.
I would appreciate no one makes fun, insult or upset fellow male or female SHCian. The bouncers will have a say, if you can enter. This event is strictly for registered SilverHairsClub members.

Farewell Gillman Heights
On 17th September, it was a dark and cloudy morning… oh no, I thought…it’s going to rain… if it does, it would be most inconvenient for all the SHC members attending the gathering at Gillman Heights.
Fortunately, toward the afternoon, the dark clouds were blown away, and 17th September turned out to be a beautiful day…
To all who attended the monthly gathering at Gillman Heights:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you – for making my last few days at Gillman Heights happy and memorable.
Dolly and Sam – thank you for organizing the event.
ALL THE HELPERS – thank you for helping.
If I miss mentioning one or two names, please forgive me… it was a very busy day, and my recall for names is not so great.
Terence, Rene, Oi Cheng, Kristin, Karen, Sockie, PatrickL, Mary, Sue Chan, Lily, Andrew, Dan, Freddie, and Tim.…
I hope that the 20 liters of pandang tea was enough to go round and that all 77 over guests managed to taste a small cup. If not, please excuse me…
Thank you – to all the guests, who had made time from their busy schedule to attend this gathering.
Many guests expressed their concerns, asking me questions such as where I’d be moving off to… some guests thought that I am a millionaire….
To dispel misconception, here are the facts: The Gillman Heights owners received $870K to $930K. Yep – Gillman Heights owners are not millionaires. It was the Farrer Court owners who received $2million each.
For the Gillman Heights owners, it was a matter of poor timing. We simply have to accept reality, and move on with our lives.
We are sad to leave Gillman Heights…. Spacious, sprawling housing estates like Gillman Heights will no longer exist.
I hope that I did manage to greet each and every guest. If I missed some of you– again, please excuse me.
Many guests commented that you have not met me before. I must be “new member”, or that I must be “inactive member”.
Not really. I registered more than two years ago. I have met many other members during these events which I have attended:
Self-development Talk (Intercontinental vault), The MacRitchie Walk, The monthly gathering at Han’s café (nonya parade), The Investment Talk (Bali Lane), The Barage Walk, The Pasir Ris Walk, The Investment Talk at Raffles City Tower.
And, I have hosted Mahjong Beginners Lessons at my place, taught by MJ teacher Freddy Liew. I was actively “promoting” Feztus’ Yunnan Health Rejuvenating trip, the first group went in Feb 2009. And I am also the EC for the laughter exercise at Hort Park.
Enuff “lee lee loh loh”. Enough said for my “credentials” as a SHC member.
I look forward to see all of you at some future gathering.
I will miss Gillman Heights. Thank you for sharing my memory of Gillman Heights.
With warmest regards
jacqueline
What will you be doing over the next 3 days?
Many SHCians must have made their plans to go away for this long weekend. I am also quite sure a number will stay in Singapore to enjoy the quiet surroundings. For some, it will just be a case of no plans; just staying at home to enjoy TV, Mahjong and maybe a few kakis coming to the house.
Share with us what you will be doing. And if you are not doing anything, nothing to be shy about, maybe some of us can meet up for tea or kopi. Enjoy the peace Sat, Sun and Mon.

Man
I join this forum about 1.5 years ago.
Before I join, I read about this new member who in his profile was writing about his marrital bliss and somehow it offended a few members, culminating in him withdrawing his membership. The members involved in this quarrel were both males as well as females.
Next, there was this male member who was disliked by other members for his ego and boastful posts. He was mercilessly attacked. Again the active parties were both males and females.
Than there was this male member who questioned if divorcees are as relax as happily married women. Of course he gets it from the divorced women but I was suprised that some men also join in the fray.
Of course none of you can miss this episode of 2 educated SHC men almost coming into blows during a party organize by SHC member.
Two weeks ago we had 2 guys quarrelling about who is the better IT guy and other men including yours truly(shame shame) took out our keyboard and join in.
This week, the physical confrontation between men which did not happen before was again revived and eventually stopped by Terence.
It occurs to me that ALL quarrels in this forum involves men. There are suppost to be much more female members than males in this club. Why are the women not quarelling among themselves but men are involve in every occasion. Do man become grumpy and quarrelsome when we grow old? What happen to girls when they get old……do they become more lovable?

Batam Weekend Trip (14/15 Nov.’09)
Dear Friends
Due to popular demand, we are thinking of organising a repeat of our first 2 days / 1 night weekend trip.
So far, we’ve received only 2 quotes probably due to the LWE. Am still waiting for more quotes to come in before I post further details on the package. Meanwhile, you may choose your room-mates in private BUT, NO NEED to announce to me just yet until our hotel is finalised. For all you know, instead of twin rooms, it could be 4 to a cabana or 8 per bungalow. So, please hold your horses! Here’s a tip for would-be-participants, we work in a systematic pace : (1) Sort list and select package/hotel. (2) Collect payment. (3) Room allocation. No payment, no room allocation.

Typhoon 8
The wind is really, really howling outside my windows and now as at 4:02, (AM that is) its screaming outside wanting to get in……………….keep my fingers crossed that my glass windows will hold up.
As this is my 1st typhoon since moving to this place last Nov, really want this place to stay in one piece. My old place though very old held up well considering.
Been hearing lots of things flying and breaking; hope no one is hurt or their property. Still watching the news now and more things etc have blown off , scattering all over……………
Apparently, this weather will continue on Tuesday and will be better towards the end of the week.
Merry making through music…
Hi fellow SHCians
Presently, we have a singer (yours sincerely), a guitar soloist, and a guitar rhythmist who is able to double as bassist or drummer. We intend to form a musical band to jam one or twice a week between Mondays to Fridays. Band equipment is already in place but venue will be decided and confirmed later.
We are looking for a bassist, a drummer, a keyboard person and last but not least, a female vocalist. If you are retired, able to make a commitment and keen to participate, please contact the undernamed at email: joncoxin@hotmail.com for further discussion.
Cheers…
Jonson
Questions from a newbie a.k.a. kaypoh
As I am new I hope I’m forgiven for posing these questions.
- As of now, how many members are there in SHC?
- Are there any married members (excluding me)?
- Is there any member here in Facebook?
- Does SHC plan to expand its membership base and make it THE Numero Uno club for 45s’ and above?
That’s all for now. My apologies for coming across like CID interrogator. :p
