Stars-in-Concert (Grand finale) – your feedback

Last night was the most memorable night for our Stars in concert.  They gave us a fantastic performance on stage, complete with songs from different languages, dialects, costumes and dance background.  The Stars poured out their hearts, and drew emotions of friendship and closeness.

True to SilverHairs, the audience gave their hearts back in return too.  They screamed, yell, whistle, stand and clap to see their fellow SilverHairs friends, expressing their love, sadness and joy.  Standing or sitting in the auditorium, one would have felt the immense closeness between audience and Stars.

After exactly two years of conceptualising Stars-in-Concert, we had a wonderful and dedicated committee to make this event come wildy memorable.  A truly heartwarming evening indeed.  I hope  you have enjoyed the concert.

On behalf of the committee, and everybody who had a hand in the show.

Hi All SHCians,
Just rec’d this message from a fren of mine and feel that should share with all of you regarding this crime alert.

Dear members of the Safety and Security Watch Group,
CRIME ALERT: USE OF COUNTERFEIT MONEY AS MODE OF PAYMENT (FOR YOUR INFORMATION)

Police has recently received reports of unknown person using counterfeit money as mode of payment. To date more than 30 cases were reported and as we approach the period of festive sales, we would like to reiterate the importance for being vigilant.

Modus Operandi – Please take note that the culprit will normally use a fake currency note of S$50/- note (commonly bearing the serial number: 2EY322725) at pubs, restaurants, petrol kiosks, convenient stores and 4D outlets for purchases.

The scam can also take in other forms ie culprit may also seek assistance in changing loose notes using counterfeit money, on the pretext of urgent need.

Crime Prevention Measures – Public and sole proprietors should remain alert and pay extra attention when customers pay for purchases using higher denominations of cash, e.g. S$50/-. Below are a few measures which can assist public to identify counterfeit notes and prevent you from falling victim to a similar ruse.

What to look out for?
1. Counterfeit Notes using serial number: 2EY322725;

2. Poor quality paper that has a waxy surface without the following intaglio: a. No raised printing; b. No shimmering effect on the kinegrams; c. No Security Thread; and

3. Although the counterfeit note simulated the outline of the watermark, but it does not have three-dimensional portrait of the late President Yusof Bin Ishak when examined under light.

What retailers and shop owners can do to prevent falling victim?
1. While such cases are not new, cashiers should be constantly reminded to be vigilant to prevent from falling victim;

2. During peak hours, cashier should decline requests for change of larger notes politely by citing the long queue as a reason;

3. If possible, additional staff should be deployed, especially during peak operating hours;

4. CCTVs should be strategically positioned to cover the cashier counter and allow the image of customers to be captured;

What you can do when you receive such notes?
1. When presented with the counterfeit note, do not return the suspected note to the suspect;

2. Delay and keep the suspect at sight and if possible contact the police immediately;

3. Take note of the description of the culprit, eg gender, age, height, built, attire, scars/tattoos, accent of language or any distinct features;

4. Note the suspect(s)’ mode of escape and take down the vehicle registration number if he/they had escaped in a vehicle;

5. Minimize the handling of the note and carefully place it in a envelope/polymer bag and hand it to the Police when they arrive.

We seek your assistance to disseminate the crime alert to all your members so that they can take the necessary precaution to protect themselves against such crime. If you have any information relating to the above cases, please do not hesitate to contact Police hotline at 1800 – 255 0000 or dial ‘999’ if urgent police assistance is required.

Yours faithfully,

Extract-ST Article “Retooling for Encore Careers”

Hi SHCians:

I would like to share the following extract by Mr Marc Freedman, founder of non profit organisation Civic Ventures in San Francisco:

Many of the most important social and human services needs of the coming decades will require

  •  fundamental human kindness
  • mentoring children
  • caring for the frail
  • supporting the elderly

Individuals of any education level are in a position to provide these services.

Even if they dont want to save the world, finding a renewed purpose later in life can be a blessing since many would have otherwise lived out their last years in loneliness.

Ultimately an encore career – whatver it may be put older folks at the intersection of money, meaning and impact, he says.

Its about reaping the maximum returns on experience and paying it forward.

Wow……….. after reading all that we need to tell and constantly remind ourselves that being old still has our own "value added" ness.

Enjoy ………..Seize the day!!!!!

DENGUE FEVER CURE

Hi SHCians

Thought I’d share this with you.  Maybe some may already know or heard of this remedy.  Nevertheless, I still would like to share this as it is always good to share remedies (old or new).

It is raw papaya leaves, 2pcs just cleaned and pound and squeeze with filter cloth. You will only get one tablespoon per leaf. So two tablespoon per serving once a day. Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water, it will loose its strength. Only the leafy part and no stem or sap. It is very bitter and you have to swallow it like "Won Low Kat". But it works.

*Papaya Juice – Cure for Dengue*

A friend of mine had dengue last year. It was a very serious situation for her as her platelet count had dropped to 28,000 after 3 days in hospital and water has started to fill up her lung. She had difficulty in breathing. She was only 32-year old. Doctor says there’s no cure for dengue. We just have to wait for her body immune system to build up resistance against dengue and fight its own battle. She already had 2 blood transfusion and all of us were praying very hard as her platelet continued to drop since the first day she was admitted.

Fortunately her mother-in-law heard that papaya juice would help to reduce the fever and got some papaya leaves, pounded them and squeeze the juice out for her. The next day, her platelet count started to increase, her fever subside. We continued to feed her with papaya juice and she recovered after 3 days!!!

Amazing but it’s true. It’s believed one’s body would be overheated when one is down with dengue and that causes the patient to have fever and papaya juice has a cooling effect. I found that it’s also good when one is having sore throat or suffering from heat.

Furthermore it’s so easily available.

Blend them, squeeze the juice, drink immediately! It’s simple and miraculously effective!!

Monthly Walk to resume: 14Feb2009

Ever wondered the difference between hiking and walking?  I did and found some comparisons:

.. Hikers hike on natural trails, walkers walk on any surface – concrete, asphalt, gravel, sand.    [We walked all types]

.. Hikers seek natural environments – forests, mountains, parks. Walkers walk anywhere.     [Right! We walked everywhere not just anywhere…. Ha]

.. Hikers like to dress the part…. in natural fibers, sturdy hiking boots, a hiking stick. Walkers may look like anybody else out strolling down the street.    [some of our walkers came in hiking shoes, all set to go]

.. Hikers bring along essentials to deal with any emergency. Walkers take their house key and maybe their wallet and water bottle.     [hee hee hee]

Are you a hiker or walker?  Me think we are both, never mind…whatever…whichever…

Let’s Hit the Trail once again shall we?  At least One step one day… aha

SHC monthly walks will resume on Saturday, 14February 2009.   emoticon

FYI, the walk team “EOs” has grown from 5 to 8!
the 3 new additions:  Joyce Tan; Charles Chua and Serene Low.

For 2009 expect some changes or variety and/or difference:
1)       Most walks will still be on 2nd Saturdays of the month.
2)       EXCEPTIONS: 3 dates shall be rescheduled to the 1st Saturday instead.  The dates are: 4Apr; 2nd May & 1Aug.
3)       Most walks will still be in the afternoons, starting around 4pm.  A couple of morning walks MIGHT be scheduled.
4)       Get your feet wet, wade in shallow streams of water might come your way….

Detailed information for each walk will be posted: approx 2 weeks before scheduled date.

NOTE:  these confirmed dates, routes to be advised/confirmed in due time:

10Jan                no walk.
14Feb               Marina Barrage, "a walk that is different"
14Mar               Keppel Island (TBC)
04Apr*              (1st Sat) Pipe Line Ramble 4 (PLR 4)
02May*             (1st Sat)TBA
13Jun                TBA
11Jul                 TBA
1Aug*               (1st Sat)  TBA
12Sep               TBA
10Oct               TBA
14Nov               TBA
12Dec               walking shoes, worn out!

We urge Members to exercise personal and group responsibility:
.. Be punctual.
.. Stay close to the group and look out for each other’s safety.
.. If you are not feeling well, please inform your friends as well as the    EOs.
.. If you need to leave earlier, please inform the EOs prior to set-off.
.. Individuals are expected to adhere to rules set by relevant authorities.

Recommendation:
1) Wear ‘walking’ shoes; light, loose clothing
2) Bring a small bottle of water; umbrella/poncho
3) Optional items: cap, sun block, camera/binoculars, insect repellant
4) Bring only the minimum, light is good!

Even if you are speedy, you may want to take the extra time to – soak in the scenery, take photos, appreciate the beautiful blooms, the butterflies, the birds and bees, perhaps a squirrel or monkeys!  Time in the natural environment should be spent observing and enjoying rather than hurrying to a destination…. the leisure walks that are intended!
Let the joy of doing a pleasant activity be there always……. emoticon

EOs of the Walk Team:   Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Jeffrey Lim, Joyce Tan; Charles Chua, Serene Low and me, ChristinaCL Chan………..signing off…

Mahjong Lessons for beginners

Recently, I have had enjoyable games with our friends from SHC. During some games with mj beginners, I found that it was difficult to teach them at the mj table in the midst of a proper game as lengthy explanations will hold up the games for others. Also, I noticed beginners’ hesitation at throwing cards causes each round of game to be longer which may lead other players to lose interest.

I am a keen supporter of mahjong and hope that this game can be popularized and be enjoyed by all. I think mj practical lessons under no pressure will be more suited for the beginners. For the this purpose, I volunteer to conduct basic and systematic lessons to explain and enhance one’s knowledge of the mahjong game structure and teach the fundamentals – rules, ways of "eating" and throwing cards, how to call and calculate "doubles" etc.

We can start as soon as there are at least 4 interested players and someone who can provide the venue. So far there is already 1 interested player, please get in touch if you are also keen on taking practical mj lessons.

A brief introduction about myself, I am a retired mathematical school teacher and was a member of the Teachers Military Band. I conducted our school military band and also taught snooker to students in school. In my personal time, I had previously taken up chinese drama acting and choir performance. Looking forward to expanding the mahjong circle.

Those who are interested can just leave a contact method along this thread.

Nostalgic songs of yesteryear!

Dear SHCians, 2008 has gone and we have just started on 2009. How will we fare this year with the recession in our midst. What upcoming events will we look forward to and what activities have we in mind to contribute to the SHC’s fraternity. As Terence has put it, we must dare to dreams and do what we have not done before. Hopefully more of you with ideas will come forward and share with us.

As the heading suggest, I have in days gone by listen to beautiful songs and music that kindles the spirit and the soul. I have listens to the music by ‘Los Indios Tabarajas’ and was overwhelmed by the instruments that brought forth those exquisite tunes. I lost my copy of this group and been hunting high and low for it. Perhap someone may tell me where to get it. Another group that moves me by their songs and music is the ‘Ray Coniff Singers’.

This is also an opportunity for music and songs lovers to share and perhap meet together!

What are your dreams and wishes for 2009?

The year 2008 has just past, and most of us have made our 2009 resolutions, dreams and wishes.

You may be surprised, but we can help one another fulfil or achieve our dreams and wishes. And one way is to openly share our resolutions and dreams with other SilverHairs.

Whether you are a new or old SHCians, don’t be shy.

New Year Resolutions, Reflections, RV plans, dreams, etc

Hi Terence and all,

Reflecting on our RV plans of the past which have not materialise, I cannot help but to post this idea of an RV alternative.  I am looking to rent a condo unit either in JB or even Malacca  that can be a 2nd home for me, as I think it wil be much cheaper living there.   So I am  thinking of renting such a unit that is within easy reach of public transport and is in a good safe location.

I am prepared to let out a room/rooms for SHC members for overnight stay either enjoying shopping, massage, makan or even for overnight MJ or for travel stops on their way up north.  This condo unit should or will be set up with cable tv, internet  and all necessary facilities like washing machine, kitchen for cooking etc.  This idea came about too from the very good response of my weekly JB trips that I had at times had to make 2 trips in a week.

So anyone in a group wanting to really feel what is like staying in JB can book the room at a very reasonable cost to stay over for a night or for as long as they want.

Will also welcome any ideas to expand such a plan, as I think  there are quite a few things one can enjoy in nearby JB besides the cheaper food, massage, karaoke, dancing, hair styling, tailoring, car services etc, is the slower pace of life there, or taking up cheaper courses in JB.  Some special courses that cost $3000 in Singapore cost the same amount in M$3000 and therefore can be quite a saving.

Cheers

A likely trip to Perth in Mar/Apr 2009

The fishing adventure on a kelong seemed to have been invaded by a likely trip to Perth.  So, let’s start a new Post here.

Joan, Mary, Hou Chong, assuming we have a group of say 7 – 14 pax coming to Perth, and of course, besides meeting you and catching fishes and abalones, we also like to travel south, along the coast and then back to South Perth.  Assuming we come to Perth in Mar or Apr this year.

Assuming we are all blur kings, what would be reasonable form of accommodation and transportation to move around Perth and the southern coastal towns.  If my memories are right, I once took a 7-seater, so an ideal target would be 7 – 14 pax.  I have a preference for a large single house.

Todate date, Jetstar airways are around $420, all tax inclusive.

What do you think are the possibilities of large accommodation, with flexibility to contain 7 – 14 people, with cooking facilities, laundry facilities, a garage, jogging track, a romantic facing of Perth city or a quiet feeling of the ideal retirement, facing a part of the swan river.

Guys, gals, keep the chat on the Perth trip here.  And, if you join the trip, you will be very loved if you can take some hard work like can you drive a 7 seater, be left side navigator, cook spagetthi or hae mee,  prepare eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast, do shopping eg buy orange juice in a supermarket,  go buy the morning newspapers, or clean the car, walk the dog, think of coming to Perth.

Or if you are thinking of 3 month short term retirement living in Perth, consider joining this likely trip and start putting  more money in the kitty box.  I hope we can make this an annual adventure, and meet up with our friends from Singapore.

Terence Seah

Indications (only) of interest to come for this trip:

  1. Terence Seah – (wk of 5 Apr), and lead driver.
  2. Lily Ho – can only give instructions, turn left and turn right.
  3. James Tan – (Week of 15 Mar). Main driver for second car.  Driven in US thousands of miles from California and everywhere.  Hopeless navigator.  Recent cataract.  Can cook fried rice/fried noodles, Terayaki chicken and bee.  Useless when it comes to fishing.  So must go supermarket.
  4. Norhayati  – can only cook maggie mee.  I think can wash car too.
  5. Patrick Lee – He needs a GPS.  Guess can co-drive. (week 15 Mar), can be lead driver.
  6. Sasan Tan – Cannot do any work, only dancing.
  7. Gwyneth Lee – ooh, can cook chicken rice.  yummy.  OK, we get some large Australian chicken.
  8. Veronique Lee – only fish, cannot do work.  Maybe be maid of the house.
  9. Ronald Wie – Jie trusts Ronald, he can drive left or right side.  So, can drive.  Cannot cook. Prefers to go Perth on another date.
  10. Nancy Major Tan – Can drive, but not navigate.  Careful she said short journey only.  Sounds like a great own style spagetti cook,  simple chinese dishes eg curry chicken or nasi lemak ok.

  11. Oi Cheng – hopeless driver or navigator.  But, at least can cook nice dishes.
  12. Karen Thio – cannot do anything.  Just want to be with fun ppl.  When did we start using short forms like ppl?
  13. Grace Wong – ooh, sure can cook, can wash, but I suspect we should share the kitchen washing.
  14. Charles Chua – a driver alright.  Prefers to leave the maggie mee cookers.

For the love of fishing at a kelong

Some of us like fishing from the Bedok jetty.  Others like pond fishing.  Brave ones go out and catch the big marlins.  Not so brave ones put their feet into a tub and enjoy rainbow fishes ravishing at their old skin.

We had a kelong outing, a few years ago.  SB Khoo caught a plate-size grouper.  Cannot remember, but RonaldLai caught a really tiny one.  Others just love the mahjong table.  I enjoy sleeping at the edge of the kelong, counting the stars after a couple of beers.

We are not going kelong fishing in this post.  But, if you have gone fishing in the last 12 months, share with us your experience, where you went to, what you got, what you ate, and how much did you spend.

Maybe, something might surface from your experience.  You never know.  Dont be shy.

US dollar has begun to fall. What ‘s its impact on Singapore?

US fed reserve has just slashed its benchmark Fed funds rates to near zero.  This signals the US readiness to keep rates low for some periods of time.  With further contraction of the US economy and further deflationary pressures, banks have been charging one another below 0.5% for overnight loans.  All tools have been tried.  What else is there to try?

Where will the Sing dollar be heading towards?  Please share your thoughts on the impact on Singapore.

A few of us were discussing couple of weeks back that we intend to organise Charity Event before the CNY for those old and needy folks so that they are also able to enjoy the joy of CNY festive season.

We will be arranging a buffet lunch for about 200paxs (this cost had been taken care of) and was hoping that we can get more sponsors to give them a small goodies bag containing 1 pkg of biscuit, 1 tin of small milo and 1 small angpow so that they

But since I hv limited cash flow on hand, I might not able to cater any lunches for all of you, so I really hope that all of you dont mind paying the lunch at your own expense.

This Event will be held on:

Time : 12.30 – 3.30pm (Lunch will provided for those old and needy)

CNY Tim Sum lunch – Feb 2009

Each year, we try to go out for lunch during the Lunar New Year festive season.  I believe a Tim Sum lunch with Chinese tea would be great.  Last year, we held ours at the Fortunate restaurant in Tao Payoh.  After the lunch, the groups went out for further more private get-togethers.

To read about last year’s CNY lunch, click here.  https://silverhairsclub.com/2008/02/1395.

I am a believer we should keep the cost down; so as a target, we should try to keep to last year’s cost.  This way, we can get more people to attend.  We should continue to have our bear hug when we meet one another.  Fortunate restaurant is fantastic.  Of course, we can have the lunch at the Red restaurant.  Can even be held in Chinatown.  It’s great on the mood and the season.  Oranges of the same size, eyes facing up, everybody in red, ladies with pony tails and guys in china slippers.  We could target 50 pax.

Would you like to be the Event Organiser?  Let’s bring in the new year.
