PLEASE REFER TO ORIGINAL POST DATED AUGUST 6TH, 2008 FOR FULL DANCE LIST & DATES

F1 fever came and gone, with the howling of the sport-car engines piercing in the air still ringing in the ears, we, now have to settle down  more to earth of the dance fever coming in October at the Esplanade’s Forecourt.  Watch the various dances performing between October 9th to 19th, you may have the chance to get in the act and take to the floor.  Do you waltz or do the salsa?  Whatever your dance style, there’s something for everyone in this dance event.  Alice and I will see you there.

Live Edge Competition – Anyone ?

Hi all,
If anyone has an idea and wishes to work with others to conceptualise it commercially, here will be a good opportunity to have it evaluated, and maybe win a prize too.  If however you are interested to work in a team as you feel you have half of what it takes then email me to work as a team, bswi@yahoo.com.  I do have many crazy ideas, and have the electronic engineering experience in past projects, but do need a strong partner as I have what is termed as ‘fuzzy logic’ when I engaged in designing. Thus a methodical, task manager who is flexible and who is as passionate about being creative is the partner/partners I am looking for in this competion for fun or just to keep our minds active.
Prizes Worth Winning
Two unique prize packages are up for grabs for the winners of Live EDGE’s student and general/open competitions, which run concurrently. Submit your design for the chance to see its journey from concept to live creation.

Winning Package

The lucky winner of each competition will receive a $25,000 (USD) cash award, plus a unique package of support services from experts in the fields of Design Consultancy, Marketing, Legal, and Commerce to drive the winning designs towards production.

The value of each support package is worth an additional $25,000 (USD) and includes:

Design Support

  • Introduction to a high-profile Electronic Design Consultancy to help move your design towards production using their invaluable resource and expertise.

Legal Support

  • Guidance and funding assistance to lead you through the maze of Intellectual Property rights, patents, contracts and complex legal processes.

Marketing Support

  • PR & Marketing funding assistance
  • Access to a leading-edge global PR agency to publicize you and your winning design.
  • Development of a unique multi-channel marketing program to take your design to market.
The winner will also be invited to form part of next year’s prestigious judging panel alongside key industry leaders and renowned technical experts from around the world!

Honourable mentions

Six designs (3 student, 3 general) are eligible to win a cash sum of $5,000 (USD) each and an honorable mention in all publicity literature.
Submit your designs from October 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009.
Good luck, Cheers

Holiday, Anyone? Hainan?

Hi, SHCians

Anyone interested to go for a short holiday with Eyvonne and me which we planned on Oct 31 to Nov 5’08.  We planned to go Hainan/Sanya lor.. But as I am going thru directly with the land operator in Hainan, the whole land tour will only be conducted in Chinese.  The land tour cost right now I have is RMB400 (subject to change) for a 4D/3N iternary, 4-S accomodation with 6 meals and 3 breakfast.  As Oct/Nov, the flight timetable had been changed to morning flight instead of normal 4.45pm return to SG hence, I had added 1 additional free day in Haikou itself so we can roam freely at our own leisure.  As dates planned are considered off-peak, the air ticket cost is ard $300 inclusive of taxes but of cos, must book early to enjoy this lor emoticon.  As for tips for local guide and coach driver, I m proposing S$2/day/pax emoticon.  Of cos, those that prefer to leave as planned, are also welcome to do so lor..

Those interested to join me can email me at dlgummy@hotmail.com for the proposed itinerary.

tGiF!!! hve a roaring good weekend folks

There’s this Jaga Singh who was working for a multi-millionare as a
night guard. One day, while the millionaire was driving out to catch
an early morning flight to conclude a business deal, Jaga Singh ran
out from the guard house and stopped the millionaire’s car just right
in front of the gate.

He said ‘Sir..Sir.. are you going to board a plane?’ ‘Yes, why?’
asked the millionaire. ‘You had better cancel the trip. You see, last
night I dreamt about the plane going to crash.’

Curious over the early morning fright that Jaga Singh had given, the
multimillionaire decided to cancel his trip. ‘You better be damn right
for this is a million dollar deal.’

The following day, there were news reports that the plane which the
millionaire was supposed to take had indeed crash landed. ! ‘Thank God
I cancelled the trip,.’ the rich man said. Realising that what Jaga Singh
had said had come true, he called the Singh to see him.

When the guard was called that morning, the millionaire gave him his
salary and FIRED him.

A WIFE’S SECRET

TIME FOR A BREAK ……emoticon

A man and woman had been married for more than 40 years. They had shared everything.

They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that

the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her

husband never to open or ask her about IT.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.

In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife’s bedside.

She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the! box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. ‘When we were to be married,’ she said,  ‘my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue.

She told me that if I ever got angry with u, I should just keep quiet & crochet a doll.’

The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only 2 precious dolls were in the box.

She had only been angry with him 2 times in all those years of living & loving. He almost burst with happiness.   ‘Honey,’ he said,  ‘that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?’

‘Oh,’ she said, ‘that’s the money I made from selling the dolls.’

Must think of a way to save up my anger & spend my savings on my Hobby !!!emoticon

Adding photos of authors of Post

Hi Terence

Just a suggestion.  Just wondering whether it will help to put photographs (small tiny one) next to the names of the people who contribute to the posts.  I feel that if they have the openness to write comments and tarok/compliment each other, they would not mind having their photos on the website? I could be wrong of course.

This thot crossed my mind coz being a very inactive member as I don’t join all the activities but if I do, I have great difficulty knowing who’s who

How to Be Happy

How to Be Happy

Nobody is happy all the time, but some people are definitely more fulfilled than others, and it doesn’t seem to have much to do with material goods or high achievement—things many people spend a lot of their time worrying about. So what do they have that you don’t?

1.                     Relax. Lighten up. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Try not to over analyze things. Stress can cause many mental, physical, and spiritual problems in your life. One of the major causes of stress is worrying about things that are out of your control. Learn to recognize these things and if you can truly do nothing about them, then just let them go. Take time to laugh at yourself and the situations you find yourself in. Laughter is a powerful, positive medicine and the calmer and more peaceful you can take things, the happier your life will be. It wouldn’t be life if some bad things don’t happen.
2.                     Smile You would be surprised how much of an immediate difference physically smiling has on your mood, if you smile and force a little laugh you will feel your mood lighten and you won’t have to force it next time.
3.                     Take the good with the bad. No one is happy all the time. Everyone has something of sorrow intermingled with the gladness of life. The trick is to make the laughter outweigh the tears. We cannot change the past, but we can enjoy today, and look to the future. If we are prepared to take ownership for the past and accept that everything that’s happened in our life, good and bad, has made us the person we are – the battle is half won.
4.                     Be thankful. A key component of happiness is acceptance – learning to be grateful for what you have. A lot of people know it but don’t keep it in their minds. Comparing your life with others’ is dangerous. Accept the gifts you have and know that no one is better than or less than anyone else’s. Keep a "gratitude journal". Every day, write down a few things that you are thankful for and then review what you have written in past entries. It’s a great way to remind yourself to be thankful for what you have and to boost your mood.
5.                     Be yourself. Much criticism is caused by people who are discontented with themselves, not with you. One way to get in touch with yourself is through journaling, diaries or (lately) blogs. Your goal may be to open up completely to yourself and learn to be your own best friend by being completely honest with yourself. What do you want out of life? What makes you truly happy? Who do you want to be?
6.                     Pursue goals that make you happy. Strive for long term goals rather than short term satisfaction. It’s very easy to gain short term satisfaction–a quick high, a fast relief from your current problems (such as drugs, alcohol, sex). But it is what it is, a "short term" satisfaction, and the effects die out very soon, leaving you with an empty feeling that is sometimes worse than before. Set long term goals, goals which take time, thought, and effort to achieve. This will make you continually work towards improving yourself bit by bit and will give you the satisfaction of bringing a permanent change in your life.
7.                     Focus on the Objective. If the thoughts you are thinking are not giving you that ‘good feeling’, then think about something else that will make you feel good in that moment. Observe your thoughts and ideas consistently throughout the day (diary/journal if possible). Sometimes this may not be as easy as you think if you are stuck in a "destructive" train of thought and your brain chemicals are getting fired up and forming "anxiety or anger" thoughts. Anxiety, fear and anger patterns can be interrupted by focusing on something else. This will dissipate the rush of chemicals that are making you feel bad. Immediately then go back to picturing scenes/remembering things/imagining, planning stuff that makes you feel good.
8.                     Develop healthy relationships.
o                                    Family. If you want a stronger relationship with your family, you’re going to need to be honest with them. Tell your family about your life and don’t insult them – it hurts them just as much as it hurts you to be insulted. If you are in an abusive family, you must find a way to stop the abuse and that may include separation.
o                                    Have a healthy relationship. If you’re dating, get involved with activities that reflect who you are, and get to know people who like the things you do. Get involved with someone who loves life and pursues happiness the way you do. If you’re in a relationship, strive to make that relationship healthy.
o                                    Choose your friends carefully. Nearly everyone needs someone who cares for them and treats them well. If you have friends who are treating you badly, or are not supportive of you and your goals to improve your life, then ditch them and find friends that do care about you. If you can’t find any friends like that in your current circumstances, then look elsewhere. If you’re feeling sad, there’s nothing like going out with your friends to make you feel better. Surround yourself with friends who are beneficial, encouraging, and helpful. We all need this continuing, nurturing encouragement to make solid desired progress in life.
9.                     Make someone else happy. When you’re feeling powerless to create happiness in your life, do something to make someone else–anyone–happy, and you’ll remember how easy it really can be. Isn’t it true the happiest people we know are typically the ones who for some foolish reason are always ready to give you the clothes off their back? And frequently it is true that the most discontented people are the ones who are selfish, demanding, and inconsiderate of others. The happiest days of our lives, when we really dig down deep, is when we see the smile on the face of a person who we care about. Even helping a stranger can remind you of how much you really have, because of how much you can give. Serve at a rescue mission and you will learn the meaning of "I cried because I had no shoes and then I met a man who had no feet."

My first meeting – thanks!

Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for a great time at the Safra Resort chalet!

(Actually, I posted my comments on the 12 September immediately on arriving home but didn’t manage to send it properly – no text. This is a rewrite. Guessed my ignorance on the computer is showing here).

It is my first outing with Silverhair clubbers. Thanks, everyone, for the wonderful moments in time.

Ronald Wie, thank you for organising the 12 September event, which went very well with many attendees. Nice play on the guitar. The short jamming session was good. Also, is there anything you don’t/can’t do eh?

Robert and Kristy, thanks for sending me (a stranger eh?) home. Kristy,

your sense of direction and guidance on the road is exemplary. Robert, I’ve not met anyone who has a tremendous sense of humour and that, driving  ‘under stress’, won’t you agree, Nancy (also a first-timer)? Glad I didn’t have to take a plane home.

Terence, I’m so happy to have finally met you. I can see why the silverhair clubbers are friendly, for you’ve set the tone.

BbCat, Joyce and Doreen (and Ronald), I’m so glad to have met you first at the NDP Line dance event and hence, my first outing with the Club.

Michelle, good to see you so happy at the event. Thanks for the lovely tuna croissant and your friendship.

Ron koh and Lydia, for the lovely nature walk together.

Grace, Steven, two Janets, Joy, Celia, Hamidah, Joanne, Chin Boon, many others whom I met for the first time…..very glad to have met you all.

Once again, thanks to all for the timeless moments which are unforgetable indeed!

Warmest regards,
Vivien Ler

A series on “how we are managing our retirement investments?”

One way or another, we are affected by the US financial crisis. This has significantly reduced our retirement savings and CPF investments. Lehman has just filed for bankruptcy protection while Merrill Lynch may soon be sold to Bank of America.

I would like to advance and hold a series of talks where SilverHairs can share their personal investment philosophy and how they are currently managing their investment portfolio. We may not have the answers, but I believe sharing this topic is key to keeping a sober head on our retirement plans.

Charles Chua has made the first offer to share with us his personal investment story. Fellow SilverHairs who wish to share their story are encouraged to let me know here. The dates and time have not been selected, but likely will be held on a weekday.

For those unable to attend or are overseas, you may log into SHC Online at star-conference.com to hear and view the sessions live. Any feedback to improve these sessions and benefit fellow SilverHairs appreciated. Terence Seah

MJ Club

The  primary intention of this  MJ (not Michael Jackson fan club)club is to link like minded members who like to play this game for fun or token bets.

If you feel uneasy responding in the forum you can drop me  a private email  and I can discretely link you up with members in the same vicinity with similar time availability and stakes range.

We have 2 ladies in Jurong area and 2 ladies in the Katong/Kembangan and myself in the Bedok area.

The popular stakes range at the moment is 20 cents/40 cents. However if you are interested in the 10 cents/20 cents or 25 cents/50 cents range do indicate what you prefer. We are not encouraging it but if you have no partners to play with in the higher range do make a request and I will advise if I can connect you.

Please indicate if you can only play on weekendsFriday nights,Saturdays and Sundays only) or if retired or housewife that you can play during the day.

Please  advise if you will  want to play with ladies only  leaving poor little old me out of the picture!

Please indicate if your location is able to host the game for free?

When you respond please advise name/sex/area/stakes preferred or within acceptable range/time availability on weekends only or anytime/all ladies game condition/hosting capability.

My email is at insiders111@yahoo.com.sg

MJ is a healthy  activity  that is highly recommended  for the Silverhairs age group to prevent the onset of dementia. If you are interested in learning  I can try to get fellow members to teach you and play games with no stakes involved just for fun.The stakes involved may not be enough for your winnings to pay for you taxi fare(if you do take a taxi) but you will have the thrill(cheap) and boasting rights.I hope this posting meets with Big Boss’s approval.

P.S. Robert…any MJ playes in Bishan area?

Forum General – Funny Riddle

Hi All:Just want to share the below funny riddle to tickle your funny bones or just to lighten myself since I am sick today:

  • Special anti-funqal brush hair can effectively limit bacteria gorwth and reassure us to use.
  • Extra-long bristles allow for suitability for openings large and small.
  • Don’t use in additional way.

Some misspelted words as copied from original text.

Anyone can guess what sort of thing this is? It is meant for daily use.

Caution: Tim Liu#  No dirty jokes from you!

Photos taken at SHC events

We are fortunate to have members who volunteer to be the photographer(s) at most of our events.   Pictures taken are sent to me to make into an album then upload on our website.  Usually, the members are happy to see pictures of themselves cos it remind them of the fun they had.

There are times when members may have requested at the point of taking, that their pictures not be uploaded.   This seems a reasonable request no doubt.   Unfortunately, there are times that such request may be overlooked and the photo made its way on the web.  I request the understanding of members that it is not the intention of the photographer to betray or break a promise.

Members who do not wish to have their pictures on the web, to please bring your own camera to take your personal shots with whoever you wish.

I would also like to remind everyone that the event photographer is there to take pictures of the event and as long as there is nothing offensive, the pictures will be uploaded.  If you do not want to be in any of the shots, avoid the photographer when he/she comes around.   If you want to pose for the photographer, then be prepared that your picture will be uploaded.

Photographers, please do not accede to special request.

Finally, please do not send email with “sh..” word to the photographers or me.   We do not deserve it.

Sunday morning Reflections

Having a break after all the manual washing living on this rented room, old rustic bungalow, without fridge,air-con,washing machine, but  with a big forested like garden, bird chirping away near my window I can’t help but recall my RV dream of settling in country side Thailand.

But then again, since I was back in Dec 2007( after a few months near Phuket), many, many beatiful things happen (finding a job, new friends, new interests, etc) much through SHC that somehow makes it harder to think of RV in Malaysia or Thailand, but who knows what destiny can bring.  The point is that SHC can bring you  that much more closer to your dream if you are careful, open minded, take your time to discover the chaff from all the flares,  and not turning it  into a nightmare instead. I now discovered that with the many frends I have made, that i could easily get a few friends to go on a short notice to Malacca or for a night of Karaoke easily.

Before I  rant on within the 15 mins I have, before going for our weekly ritual badminton that we all have come to love, I just want to comment Patrick for being strong as big as  a boulder as he is to offer his services in travel, betting and advisory on heart matters.  I symphatised with him as at times SHC seems to be ready for a truly good ground for  a matured, heart opening, no holds barred,  exciting place to have a forum on anything that interest SHC members. So Patrick keep on, you have my support as I think we will get there someday soon.  Briefly a forum is to have different conflicting views aired to provide an avenue for set minds to learn of other people’s point of views and looking at facts from different angles discovering realms of possibilities that is left undiscovered or never thought possible.  Many of us have discovered and realise that we could do more things as a group which I will share.

Back to achievements or dreams that I or a few have wanted to do and have done the past year. The cycling group has got more interesting discovering new challengers, like cycling to Pengarang, Desaru, 60 km /120km rides.   Adventure (SHAG ) group was initiated organising challenging walks of 12 km up and down Bukit timah hill and climaxing to the top of Mt Ophir and back safely.  Water rafting up Ipoh, with Caving and Rafflesia hunting were also clocked by those who were keen with such things.  On roller blading did the night 10Km blading from ECP to Downtown East, and finally yesterday, did roller blading to CV and back with Kat and Stella ( who must have done her longest skate ever although she almost made it there).

From never doing any kind of dancing before (shy, etc) i have love to do line dance and also social dancing. On Country line dance now I have discovered Monday nights free dance jam (thanks to Rosalind), and on Sept 12 hopefully we have our ‘Love for Country line dance jam with Hamidah ‘ at NSRCC an event that can spark greater interest among new and old members.

On Sept 13 the Mid Autumn event I hope we can have the maximum number of Karaoke singers turn up , as I will make sure everyone will have a chance to have your  stage, and Caroline our Singing Queen will be there too.  I am trying to find someone who can be kind enough to lend us a karaoke machine with ‘automatic’ scoring so that we can have a friendly unbiased scoring or feedback system to select our top karaoke singers and also for general feedback.  Anyone with such a Karaoke player to lend ?  Cheers.
