SHC Annual Dinner & Dance – likely 4 Apr 2009

Our 3rd Annual dinner & Dance is planned to run in Mar 2009.  Nothing has been decided yet.  We have not identified the Event Organiser, the venue or even the dates.

If you are eager and cannot get your hands itchy to be the Event Organiser, please raise your hands.  We can let you decide on the program, the committee and the theme.  It’s all up to the EO to dream.  Only two things that the EO needs to clear with me – the place and cost.  The place must be conveniently accessible by public transport, and the cost must be more than reasonable.

Hello,

I am Dhevi and I have just joined the SHCians.  I am glad to know that I would be able to find new friends who share the same interests in this club. I read about the club and I am very happy that I am going to be a member of it.  I am a jolly person, happy go lucky type.

I am 48 years old and I have been working in the Armed Forces as a DXO- in the Administration line for about 30 years.    Dancing is my passion; I love to cycle despite my knee problem; and I absolutely love to travel.  I am a working mother with 3 children; My Hubby (Mr. Sekaran ) is already a member in your club.

My aim now is to meet up and get to know as many friends as possible and also looking forward to the tours organized by the club so that I can travel to many places as age is catching up.   I would also like to participate in SHC activities whenever possible. I assure you that I will actively take part in SHC’s activities.
And lastly I would like to thank Mr Terence Seah who initiated the thought of creating “The SilverHairsClub”

Going to Batam 7/8 Dec 2008

I am thinking of going to Batam on a 2D/1N holiday. Will only stay within the hotel compound. Just to breathe some fresh, maybe be naughty a bit and enjoy some beers or whiskies. Do nothing. Start early Sunday and return Monday late afternoon.

Anyone interested or any suggestions for hotels or bookings? I am 99% sure of going.

Today’s news reports

So much has happened lately; carnage in Mumbai; Bangkok’s airports chaos & of course the on-going financial crisis. I shed tears everytime I read the daily reports of the senseless loss of Ms. Lo Hwei Yen in Mumbai. The pain felt by her immediate families and loved ones and even those who don’t know her is indescribable. How tragic.

On a more uplifting front is the return to normalcy of the Bangkok airports and especially heartening to know that our fellow SHCians are all home safe and sound. Your families must be happy & relieved!

Today in the Mind Your Body segment is an interesting article "Ageing In Style" written by Gary Hayden. He also quote an interesting poem by Samuel Ullman: ‘Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideas. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul’. The hale & hearty ways some of the SHCians displayed here are so true to this poem. These members are out to have a good time and at the same time they are ‘spreading’ their enthusiasm to other members. These members know who you are – so give yourselves a pat on the back!

We have always been looking for small places to hold talks.  But very often, the venue does not give us the flexibility or the tools to hold small talks.  Please look around; and if you have some suggestions for a avenue which fits our needs, please raise your hand.

  • Installed equipment included overhead projectors, screens, TV, with notebook connections, internet access (preferably wireless), microphones.
  • Seating capacity of 20 – 40 pax.
  • Very flexible with numbers.  This could be an existing cafe or lounge.
  • Ideally, no charge for the use of the venue.  The venue should have its own F&B.
  • Located close to MRT and public transport.

Majong game (2 tables) cum pot-luck get-together dinner at place, Kembangan (east side) on Sat 27 Dec 2008 1pm – 10pm

A Blessed, Merry, Joyous X’mas and A Happy, Healthy, Peaceful New Year – 2009 to one and all. To encourage further interaction among SHians, I would like to organize a majong game (2 tables) cum pot-luck get-together dinner at my place, Kembangan (east side) on Saturday, 27 Dec 2008 from 1pm till 10pm.

However, due to certain constrains, I have to limit it to 15 people. Basic needs like water and paper crockery will be provided. I shall contribute more than one dish. So folks, those who are interested and able to make it please email me at janlo8@gmail.com

Sandirasekaran – Profile

Hi to all,

I am Sandirasekaran, may call me Sekaran. I came for my 1st SHC gathering on 15 Oct at Kovan. Could not meet up with all of you much but manage to speak to Terence Seah and 3 other members. Was not able to make it for the gathering in Nov as I was on Overseas Leave. Will make up for it by coming for the next gathering on 17 Dec.

About myself, I am 55 yrs old retiree from the SAF. I left SAF after 27 yrs of service on an early retirement at the age of 46. Got a 2nd career job thru SAF with MCYS. Presently working at S’pore Boys Home as a Senior Rehab Officer looking after juveniles.

As for my family, married with 3 children aged 24 – F, 18- F and 15- M yrs old. My wife Dhevi is 48 yrs old and I would be getting her into the club soon as a member too.

Health wise, I am fit and am trying to keep myself fit by jogging at least twice a week.  At workplace, I move alot with the boys but not catch up with their strenght and fitness .

My aim now is to meet up and get to know as much as possible all SHC members. Also looking forward to travel a many places as possible.  

Finally, I would to thank and salute Mr Terence Seah and all others who have made SHC lively for the retirees.

Jane Loh – Profile

I am Jane Loh who had just joined the SHC in Oct ’08. I retired recently from teaching. At present I do relief teaching as and when I’m asked or free to do so. I am interested to make friends and participate in activities whenever possible. I like to read, cook, sew, travel (needs a room-mate at most times) and play majong (small stake – 5 doubles $3.20/$6.40) whenever I can. I can host the majong sessions if there are interested players.

I first attended the monthly meeting on 18 Nov. I saw there was a good attendance and I even met two of my friends whom I’ve not seen for a long time. I observe that many members are friendly and able to interact well. I enjoyed the kebaya fashion show thanks to whoever had organized it. I must also thank the founder of the club for creating a golden opportunity for people to befriend one another. I hope to make as many new friends and enjoy life to the fullest now that I’ve retired.

Travel Insurance anyone knows of any better offer?

Hi all,

Since it is the start of the season for travel it is also good to ensure you are adequately covered for your overseas travel in case of any emergencies, flight delays or lost luggage, etc.

I just got a call from Citibank this morning for an offer of a year’s travel coverage worldwide including Malaysia for only $137 ( from ACE insurance it is supposedly $150).  Since it is a year’s coverage you are free from having to fill up your travel details everytime you travel out.  The coverage also includes lost items due to theft , lost luggage , hijacking, medical and personal liability coverage, etc.

So I guess with this settle, I can travel at least with some comfort in mind.  Anyone knows of any better offers? Terence , can you share with us your coverage plan and details and the repayment of your laptop due to theft that happen last year?

By the way, ACE insurance also covers personal protection for sporting, accidental injuries or illness and hospitalisation coverage while you are in Singapore or overseas for a monthly premium of about $25.  With me roller blading, cyclng , and travelling most of the time I guess it is better to be protected.

Mahjong Game

Hi SHCians

I am sure there are many among us who enjoy this game.  It is recommended by doctors to senior citizens as this game stimulates the brain cells and thus delay the onset of diseases such as dementia and other age related illnesses.  If we can have a pool of interested members, then we can have a weekly sesssion among ourselves. Stakes are not important as the main aim is to enjoy the game and socialise.

Managing retirement investments (session 3)

There must be some lucky ones amongst us.  But, by now, many of us must have also looked at our retirement investment statements many times over, and see that we have lost some 50% of the money we have put in as retirement investments.  Time for session 3.  Likely an evening, and likely during a weekday.  Depends on the speakers.

Before I put up a date, may I have speakers or moderators to put up their hands.  Topic can be on forex trading, currency pairs, gold, property or simply cash under the bed.  It’s really up to you.  Use this as an opportunity to share.

Soo Kee ‘nan’.

The territorial westerlies and easterlies winds came and gone. Nothing much have been heard since then about coming together for gatherings or feastingsemoticon

We, the Hainanese clan felt a need to gather together. Most of us may have forgotten to speak the dialect. This is an opportunity to share our cultures, to improve our dialect before it goes into extinction!

We have Hokkien karoeke mooted by Terence and waiting to get off the ground. Why not having the Soo Kee ‘nan’ get together. An initial plan is just to meet up and discuss ideas. Maybe get someone to teach how to cook Hainanese Chicken rice or visit to our motherland in Hainan!emoticon

There is so much to do and share and we invite contributions from fellow Soo Kee ‘nan’. To start off, let’s get those keen to participate come together for a lunch gatherings to get it going.

Feztus is organizing a trip to Yunnan, departure date 18 Dec, for 10 days.

Below is the itinerary. It can be customized or fine-tuned further.

Right now, I already have 4 “very keen to go” (including me). Any one else interested?

The overland package cost is $500. Airfare NOT included. It is approximately $600 includes taxes and surcharge, depending which airlines.

Itinerary

Program

Day 1

 Arrive Kunming and check into hotel. Walk to Green Lake to see Siberian Seagulls. They flies to Yunnan every year in December and stay around the lake till March. After that for dinner walk to “Cross The Bridge Noodle” Restaurant. After dinner enjoy the cool night strolling or drinking tea by the roadside.
Day 2 – 4 After local breakfast and coffee transfer to Olive Farm 2 nights Home Stay. Managed by 2 Singaporean couples who will be hosting and cooking for us. Great place for relaxation and reflection! “Rejuvenation Program includes harvesting and eating fresh and nutritional vegetables grown at the farm with no preservatives, no chemicals, all natural vegetables and fruits. On the final night we can have BBQ session on the open mountain, cold weather, gazing the millions of stars of the clear sky! We can also organize some farming activities on the 10,000 olive trees farm!
The types of vegetables grown and available on the farm are spinach, beet, radish, chards, beans, squashes, egg plant, basil, aragula, zucchini, chillies, herbs, cabbage, endives, lettuce of many varieties, cucumber, corn, broccoli, tomatoes, asparagus, etc. all of these are available from march to sept but from Oct to Feb will have lesser leafy veggies, but squashes, leeks, broccoli etc are available. You can choose how you want it to be cooked or even raw! We also have honey on our farm and other seasonal fruits.
Day 5 After breakfast, return to Kunming from farm. Check into Service Apartment/Hotel. Lunch at Mao Ze Dong Restaurant. It has the dishes of Mao’s Butler. Mostly spicy dishes, good for cold weather. After lunch to the Hot Spring Spa. Spa has different type of pools to soak, rose petals, coffee, Guizhou Muotai Wine, etc., water temperature from 36 to 43 Deg C. There is even a volcanic stone floor bed for lying down. Back after dinner. Buffet dinner.
Day 6 After breakfast, check out and proceed to Dali/Lijiang/Shangrila.
To Dali, transfer to 5 hours coach bus to go to Dali, stay at Fu Chun He Bai Guesthouse. Walk around the Dali Old City, “The Great Walls of Yunnan”, eat and shop around “Foreigner’s Street”. Visit 2 old churches in Dali old city. The catholic church is built in the shape like an Ark, Noah’s Ark!
Day 7 After breakfast, go to Lijiang by bus, 3 hours journey. Check into guesthouse and visit Lijiang Original Ancient Town. For lunch, eat Salmon grown in Lijiang and many other exotic herbal local dishes. Stay either in Lijiang hotspring or regular guesthouse in old city. After lunch visit and tour Lijiang Old City. You can shop for San Qi flowers and roots, other herbs here.
There is this Jade Snow mountain, but not good to go. It is too cold, too high and oxygen level too low for some of you to go. Some people heart will palpitate in reaction.
Day 8 After breakfast, roam around Lijiang old city. After lunch, can check out the Hot Spring Spa here. It is more natural and has a bit of the sulphuric content. If not fly back to Kunming. Check into hotel.
Day 9 After breakfast, walk around city. Check out Singapore’s very own “BreadTalk” and Haagen Daz in Kunming. Eat lunch at “Porridge Queen” restaurant, visit the Flower & Bird Street and shopping area and dinner will be at the local steam boat restaurant.
Day 10 Morning last minute shopping after breakfast. After lunch, check out and take flight back to Singapore. All these at the cost of only $500!

Barstool Economics

Thought I would share this which I received from my American friend :

 

Econ101 – Barstool Economics / and Obama wants more from #10
      
    Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill
    for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our
    taxes, it would go something like this:

    The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
    The fifth would pay $1.
    The sixth would pay $3.
    The seventh would pay $7.
    The eighth would pay $12.
    The ninth would pay $18.
    The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.     

    So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the
    bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one
    day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good
    customers, he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer
    by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

    The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our
    taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink
    for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How
    could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his
    ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if
    they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and
    the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the
    bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by
    roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts
    each should pay.

       And so:
    The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings)
    The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
    The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
    The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
    The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
    The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

    Each of the six was better off than before And the first four
    continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men
    began to compare their savings.

    ‘I only got a dollar out of the $20’, declared the sixth man.
    He pointed to the tenth man,’ but he got $10!’
    ‘Yeah, that’s right’, exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a
    dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’
    ‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10
    back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’
    ‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We
    didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’
    The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

    The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the
    nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay
    the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough
    money between all of them for even half of the bill!

    And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors,
    is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get
    the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them
    for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact,
    they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
    friendlier.

Monthly Cycling on Sat, 15 Nov 08

Dear Passionate Cyclists

For this month cycling, we will continue our leisure ride up to NSRCC.

Meet at rear of McDonald Restaurant, Marina Cove, East Coast Parkway.

Rented bikes with special rates for SHC members are available.

Activity will be not be cancelled even if it rains but will be brought indoor for chitchat session. We will go for dinner together after the cycling session.

Rain or shine, we will definitely be there 4U. Look forward 2seeing u guys

Hi everyone, hope to get to know you all better in the coming days!

My friend introduce me to this interesting club and I am looking forward to it.

Let me tell you abit of my humble self emoticon: 

I am an outdoor person, I loves camping, hiking but those were the days. Yet I still cycle around east Coast park with my dear friend whenever we have the time.

I am always active in volunteering in social and community work,
such as St John, VC, Befriender, CDC, Volunteer Special Police Constabulary, Residents’ Committee. Not only I gain experiences through volunteer work  but to appreciates life better.

Although I am supposed to retired, but can’t stop working because I love my career, it’s not only interesting but very challenging as well … hahaha emoticon

TreeTop Walk – Sat Nov 8th

TreeTop Macritchie Walk

Date- Saturday 8th Nov 2008
Time- 4 pm ( please note we are starting earlier than usual, please be on time)
Meeting Place – Bus stop near Junction of Venus Drive(opposite FlameTree Condo) & Upper Thomson Road
Disembark   at the  bus stop  after Thomson Plaza if you are going north towards Sembawang . The bus stop is located immediately after the junction traffic light and  on same side as Venus Drive.

Buses – #132, 163(toapayoh interchange), 165, 166(AMK interchange), 167, 410( bishan interchange), 855(yishun interchange), 855, 980.
For those driving,  please leave your vehicle  at the large open air car park at  Venus Drive.  Free parking there.

We will begin our walk from Venus Drive and continue a short distance along Island Country Club road before linking up with the forest trail leading us to Ranger Station, our first rest & toilet point. From there we will continue walking the trail for a while, then climb a short steep road to the hilltop, cross the TreeTop bridge single file, enjoy the height & scenery before descending to a long boardwalk leading to Petaling Hut enroute to our starting point .
The whole journey takes about 2.45 hours , including a short rest.
Unlike the previous pipeline walk, there are no major obstacles to overcome , no drains to jump across , no fence to climb nor slippery slopes or muddy or soft wet grounds to cross. So don’t worry but must remember to bring your umbrella or poncho as the weather is unpredictable during this period of the year,
After the walk, food is readily available , a couple of bus stops away along Sin Ming/Upper Thomson Road.

This is the last walk for this year, so we hope to see many of you  there.

I am amazed at what one man can do. And I meant – the one man who had created and founded this silver hairs club. Terence Seah – please take a bow! You have founded this silver hairs club providing opportunities for people to connect and to learn from each other. More importantly, the opportunities to enjoy ourselves together.

Hi Everyone, I’d like to introduce myself, briefly – I am a practical and introspective person. I live my life in a minimalistic, no frills manner. That could be because my growing up years were frugal. I grew up in an attap hut built on stilts on swampy land. By some lucky twist of fortune – life’s events have somehow unfolded in my favour. Society uses material possessions as yardsticks of success. If I use the same yardsticks? I think I am not doing so badly…

I chose to retire early last year. I wanted a change of environment. I wanted to explore other opportunities. With that in mind – I had spent several months in Melbourne. While there, I had volunteered at a charitable organization, and had taken up a TEFL course. (TEFL stands for Teach English as a Foreign Language.) Yes – I am a recently certified TEFL teacher. I am toying around with the idea of teaching English in China. Or – I could volunteer to teach English to the underprivileged. I am excited at the prospect and the possibility. But I am not adamant about it. I go with the flow – depending on which way the river flows….

My “psycho-analyst” had told me that my “material success was not all just luck” – and that I should give myself credit for having clambered out of the poverty pit. That is the other thing about me – I don’t give myself enough credit. Generally, we tend to underestimate ourselves. This could be the result of our Asian upbringing: our parents usually do not approve of any “self praise”. Yep – we have been deeply ingrained to be modest about our achievements. So much so, that we forget to pat ourselves on our backs.

Career wise: my younger days were in the banking industry. In later years, I was an administrator with a MNC. At present, gainfully unemployed.
Interest wise: I enjoy keeping fit, reading, writing and travels.
I love to read – books on philosophy and psychology, and the mysteries of life – known scientifically or unknown as yet. For lighter reading, I love science fictions to tickle my imagination, books on self-development; or health and nutrition.
Travels – I love natural beautiful scenery rather than man-made buildings. Although I must say that I was quite impressed with several centuries old cathedrals and Egypt’s pyramids.
I enjoy my moments of solitude. I seem to need more “alone time” than many people I know.  I enjoy doing absolutely nothing. I could be seated on a bench in crowded Orchard Road, or seated on a swing in a quiet playground.

To keep fit and healthy – I exercise daily by climbing stairs to the 19th floor of a tall building. It is an easy way to exercise, no need to book a court (for tennis/badminton), rain or shine I can still climb the stairs. I also have a simple diet regime whenever the pounds creep up on me. If any one is interested, I’d be happy to share it with you.
I look forward to meeting like-minded members during the monthly get-together. Till then, I wish you all the best. May the rest of your life, be the best of your life.
