Date: 10 April 2010 (Saturday)
Start Time: 9 am (approx 9 hours)
Meeting point: Woodland Town Centre, plaza between Blocks 2A and 4A (end point of Pipe Line Ramble 4)
Getting there:
by MRT – Marsiling MRT Station (about 1 km walk)
by Bus – Bus service nos 170, 856, 903, 911, 912
Leaders: Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan
For those who have done part or all of the Pipe Lime ramble series, this is for the masochist in us. The Pipe Line Ramble X-treme is a 4-in-1 combination of the four walks. Total distance is about 25 km walking through a variety of ground from pavement, parks, scrub land, grassland, forest, people’s backyard and of course on the pipe line at certain sections, if you are so inclined. The terrain at parts will be hilly with a few streams to cross and a few walls to climb too.
There will be a lunch stop around Turf City or Sixth Avenue. We’ll play it by ear on that day exactly where.
The walk will end at Pearl’s Hill around 5 or 6 pm. From there we can adjourn to Keong Siak Street for dinner at the either of the famous zhi char restaurants, Kok Sen or Tong Ah to put back all the calories we burnt that day!
The walk will be quite rigorous and be prepared. Wear trekking shoes, if you have otherwise make sure that what you’re wearing gives good traction on uneven ground. Also make sure you are comfortable with walking for 9 hours at a sustained brisk pace before signing up.

The SilverHairsClub is for Singaporeans, over 45. The taboos on activities and discussions of the club are "No politics, sex, religion, race, direct selling and MLM". Its objective is to provide a platform for SHCians to meet new and more friends.
From time to time, we get requests from expatriates and PRs to join SHC. The answer is we will exercise discretion, and membership is subject to our approval.
It is important to note that only individuals are allowed to join this virtual but real social club. In other words, corporations or companies or external organisations are not allowed to join SHC. Corporations cannot be represented by a member, altho members may be part of that organisation.
As this is a "free to join" club, advertising is not permitted on the forum and during club activities. Therefore, we do not support promoting external organsiations. There are requests from members to promote external organisations or sell products. I am reviewing this but unfortunately, I have not found a solution to meet such requests. Basically, we do not have the human resources.
However, SHC has always been very open to members who are entrepreneurial, runs their own business and able to provide handy men services. Some degree of mention of what you do will be accepted on this forum. Again, external organisations are not permitted to be mentioned here.
Here are some examples of what can be accepted on this forum:
Here are some examples of what would not be accepted on this forum:
Some of you have expressed disappointment and even anger at this rules. I am not so sure how to handle this. SHC does not have a management or a committee. We are unable to monitor or keep track of all activities and going-ons. So, a simple set of rules is sufficient.
If in doubt, feel free to write to me. You are free to express your views and comments here too.

As a guide, you do not need to give away your email address or telephone numbers to Event Organisers or Event Cordinators. Large or small events can be organised successfully without having to do so.
Event Organisers or Event Cordinators are reminded not to ask for email addresses or tel numbers unless it is necessary.
Members who give away their tel numbers or email address run the risks of spams and unnecessary emails.
Ideally, you may do so if you know the organiser or the coordinator well. If the event has started or and you are participating, the decision is yours. With immediate effect, EOs or ECs may be asked if email collection is necessary for fellow members to join their event.

If you are reading this forum, it means that you are likely a familiar face to the monthly gatherings. For a long time now, we have our regular venue at Hans, as it is large, flexible, and it offers food & beverages conveniently at the counter. The numbers vary between 80 and 130 each time, can be very noisy, and usually a time and place to catch up with old SHC friends. For new comers, the monthly gathering can be a touch and go affair, and can be rather intimidating as everybody seems to know everybody.
Sometimes, our monthly gatherings are organised in restaurants, function rooms, public beaches, condos, etc. Again, the numbers can be pretty big.
We will still continue to hold the large monthly gatherings, and we will still have the Event Organsier. But, for a change, in 2010, we will have smaller groups too. The idea is to give the new members a chance to interact among themselves, and when they are brave enough to join the large monthly affairs. For convenience, I may arrange to call up these small groups, based on their joining dates. We will try this idea out throughout 2010.
In case, you are not aware, all SHCians have a prefix tagged to their name eg SHC807. This means this member was registered in July 2008. Due to some reasons, some members may have two prefixes because they tried to join at different times. But, the numbers are small.
You are welcome to give your feedback.

Dolly, as we all know her by this name, is stepping down as SHC Club manager this month. Well, many of you know how dedicated and crazy Dolly is. She has put in a lot of effort to fulfil the club’s objective. Unfortunately, she has to be out of Singapore for a period of time due to work commitments. No, she is not doing the disappearing act. I am sure her heart is still with us.
Meantime, I shall take back the role, until such a time as we have another SHCian in place. Hmm, you are free to raise your hand.
Thank you Dolly.
Terence Seah.
Christmas is coming. It’s a good time of the year to pause and remember our friends and family members. We take this opportunity to send best wishes to those we know and those we love. In the past, we send Christmas cards, write an address on the envelope, put on a stamp and bring it to the Post Office. We leave the rest of the work to the Postman.
Today, we use emails. And, for SHCians, you can send "Merry Christmas" greetings to your friends via SilverHairsClub.com.
On this joyous mood, may I wish all SHCians a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And that you will meet some good friends and bring new life into your SilverHairs years.

I thought I’d start a thread whereby all of us can share quotes or phrases that is meaningful and worth pondering over.
Here’s mine that I received via email from a good friend.
"Apologizing does not mean that you are wrong and the other one is
right…It simply means that you value the relationship much more than
your ego …"
Hello fellow SHCians! Would any of you be keen to go for a food hunt once a month, commencing January 2010?
There are many yummy eateries – restaurants/zhe zhars at coffee shops/hawker stalls spread all over Singapore that serve delicious dishes at very reasonable price. My idea is to have any SHC member recommend a good place to eat, either for lunch or dinner during a chosen day of the month.
Of course, the credo ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’ will prove challenging but it’ll be interesting to be adventurous once a month.
I suggest Dolly Lim be the EO of this……..:p

Hi
I would like to keep up with my golf game when I’m in S’pore. Is anyone interested in playing golf in Johore or at the executive public courses in S’pore? It’s nice if there is a ladies or mixed group formed. Is there any SHcian who can arrange golf+transport to places where fees are reasonably cheap and where we can play?
Cheers

The SilverHairsClub.com website is very well visited by thousands of Singaporeans and the internet community. It is SHC’s home. It serves as a platform and a venue for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends. SHCians can organise events at any venue, and use SilverHairsClub.com as the communications medium. SHCians can share their thoughts, organise their special interests groups, discuss private business ideas, plan games, talk retirememnt plans, travel, etc. There is almost no restriction, except for the club taboos.
A number of SHCians as well as external organisations have asked to place their events or information about their activities on our website. Some organisations have also asked members to help place promotional and marketing informaton here. A couple of members get pretty angry and nasty when their requests are rejected. And, some even challenge the decision, as the use of this forum is free. Some members do view that promotion of external organisations or services is for information of members, and it is their right to dessiminate the marketing or promotion informaton. We do not have companies as members; only individual memberships.
As a guide, we draw a line between clear advertising vs venues/activities organised by members. Very often, the line cannot be easily distinguished. We are always supportive of Event Organisers EOs, who organise activities for members, and as such, there may be a cross-over the line. As such, decisions to publish any promotional or advertising materials are final. This website is free for members to use; and I would ask all members to note that advertising on the website is not allowed.

Hi All
If free with nothing to do on Sun 15 Nov, drop by at my condo flat to participate in or just watch artists at work. It’s a very informal gathering and perhaps a chance to meet SHCians who I haven’t met or to meet up again.
Two art classes are organised: Starting at 1 pm – 3 pm is a Batik Painting course which is of 2 parts, with the 2nd part from 3.30 – 6.30 pm. From 3 – 6 pm is Painting on small brush or mirror. Both classes are taught by art teachers who are friends of mine.
If you are interested to learn other things or perhaps to get a designer to do flyers, wedding cards or a collage of your photos for your travels etc, you may be able to meet people who can assist you.
Just let me know so that I’m aware of the number coming. You can email me at joanwong2002@hotmail.com ( after 4 Nov as I’m back in S’pore then).
Cheers

Dear all,
I have wirtten a post yesterday morning but discovered now that it’s content is empty pending review. There is a bug in the system.
So here goes again…
1. Instead of organising our own meeting this month, I am inviting our kakis and those who are interested in investing to join a talk on 24 Oct 09 at Phillip Investor Center at Shan Rd/Balestier RD from 9.30am to 12.30pm. It is free, and light refreshment will be served. I will conduct training on POEMS for those who are keen and willing to stay back for 30mins after the meeting. Plse reply to this post, thanks.
2. I have started Twitter braodcast and you are invited to "follow me" for stock market news, stock alerts, US indexes and STI directions, stock chart analyses, US econmic data, etc. You can join Twitter at www.twitter.com and "Search" for benfoo88 and "Follow Me" and read all my braodcasts or tweets. This is faster and I will try to keep it short and relevant to help you in the decisions to invest. I have made some recommendation before opening yesterday morning after the STI trashing on Monday and DOW trashing last Friday.
Cheers, Ben
Hi Silver Hair Buddies
If you have spare time, wish to do something meaningful from home, likes to talk on the phone and yet have the flexibility of choosing your work hours, this is the job for you. Minimum 20 hours per month.
Industry : Beauty n Spa
The job description of the marketing assistant is as follows :
Attributes of an ideal candidate :
If interested, please email to me at "hjwong29@gmail.com" and leave me your contact. I will call you back as soon as possible.
Hi All
This is prompted by Jassmine’s post on Barter …… and the suggestions that she raised. I believe that some had shown interest in my earlier post of opening my place for learning activities but then changed my mind. The reason was chiefly I spend very little time in Singapore and therefore unable to manage any activities held there. I hope to be able to manage this better with some help and my longer presence back.
Those who wish to visit my place to see if they like to conduct things there can let me know.
To kick off this is the first activity:
Course: 4 hr Batik Painting for beginners
Dates: Nov 8 & 15 ( 9 – 11 am) or Nov 22 ( 8am – 12nn)
Fee: $40
Regards
Joan
Venue: my condo flat
Afternoon classes can be arranged instead.
Currently, we have two active roles taken up by Yew Kwong and Dolly Lim. The roles are Website administration and Club manager. Both roles will run until end of 2010.
There are two other active roles, and they are the Pictures Manager and the Calendar Manager. The Pictures manager role is held by Oi Cheng, and this role will end its term in Dec 2009. The other role of Calendar Manager is held by Dolly Lim; and this role also expires in Dec 2009. Both Dolly and Oi Cheng have fulfilled the functions very well; no complaints.
Meantime, we will be looking for SHC members who are willing to manage one of these two positions in Jan 2010. Likely to be someone with time at hand, loves fiddling with internet work, known to other members and pretty active getting to know people and joining the different activities.

Hello SHCians,
For the month of September gathering, we have the honour to host it at Gillman Heights upon the kind gesture of Jacqueline Han, who make it possible by arranging the necessary logistics.
This Gillman Heights Condo although aging in appearance (and severely need a coat of fresh paint) has wide open space with lots of matured trees and greenery. Other plus points are the "olympic length" swimming pool, and large wading pool. Also a good-size playround surrounded by greenery. For those want to have a swim before gathering, they are most welcome to do so. Ample parking spaces for car owners. Though not near to any MRT but easily accessible by bus.
Info for Gillman Heights location, and public transport:
Buses to Alexandra Road: 51, 93, 97, 100, 166, 197.
Buses to Depot Road: 57, 175, 195

Jacq had even offered to provide free flow of her famous (self-proclaimed) pandan tea. It is a refreshing iced drink, freshly brewed from pandan leave and tea with sugar added. Pandan leave contains anti-oxidants, and is highly recommended to counter the effects of heatiness caused by fried stuff and spicy food.
Another factor being that come November 2009, Gillman Heights, as it is, will no longer exist. Yep, it is to be torn down, and redeveloped into something else. So come to have look before it gone lor…
We never before had a monthly gathering at Condo’s function room but decided to give this a try, hence fellow SHCians come and support this gathering
We can have a Pre ‘Chong-Chew Jie’ celebration and I will sponsor two boxes of mooncakes to get these going but only 1 or 2 yolks kind 1 hor…
And Terence is going to bring along another 2 boxes of mooncakes all way from Taiwan hor…
Function room is big enough host at least 60-80paxs and we can hv some light music accompany us thru’ the nite. To make the gathering more interesting, Terence will bring along the wireless mic with amplifier set. Anyone considering bringing along a portable DVD lar so that we can some singing
For this gathering, as we are thinking of getting mini buffet (ard $7) hence, registration is a must for better planning for food, so come and register early…
So much of lee lee lo lo, the September monthly gathering is confirmed to be scheduled as follows:
Payment : Pls ATM or IB to Dolly Lim POSB Saving# 146-00513-6 soonest possible
Hence, please start registration now and feel free to add any agenda that any of you wish to cover ![]()

Members interested in the idea of learning or receiving through an exchange scheme may be wondering how the idea can be implemented without fuss. Here I suggest two main ways:
1. Direct approach – state/explain your interest(s) e.g. to learn the cha2. Then state/ explain the skill(s) or service(s) you are offering for the exchange/swop.
2. KIV approach – (a)state/describe your interest(s) e.g. learn to bake pineapple tarts and indicate your willingness to barter or to make payment. Then wait for interested parties to approach you.
(b)state/describe your skill area(s) or the service(s) you are able to provide, e.g. teaching craftwork, language, etc and indicate your interest to barter or to be ‘hired’. Then wait for interested parties to make their offers.
If there is a ‘match’ of mutual interest, the two parties carry out their negotiation, etc. in private and they will be solely responsible for any agreements reached or decisions made.
Of course you can offer your service(s) for FREE. That’ll be the icing on the cake. I’m sure the recipient will be very grateful.
Feel free to offer your suggestions, feedback, etc, as these will help to shape the exchange scheme. Because it’s a win-win situation, I hope ‘barter trading’ will become a feature of the SHC.
For some time, I have been looking for an icon to represent a SHCian. At first, I wanted to select a picture from our large collection of photos taken during events. I thought over it, and decided otherwise. It would be a tough job. Then, I might offend someone.
Maybe a caricature would be good, but then, I am not sure who among us can do the drawing job. Last night, I came across a website www.mywebface.com which allows any creative person to generate a cartoon from a set of simple tools.
My hope is to have one male and one female icon to represent SHC members on the website as well as other promotional materials. If you are creative and like to take the challenge, and like to raise your hand to produce a pair of SHC icons, I would really appreciate it.

by Serene Low / Joyce Tan in SHC main bulletin, Walking
Date: 12 September 2009 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Kembangan MRT control station
Start Time: 4.30pm
EOs for this walk: Serene Low and Joyce Tan
The walk from the MRT would be along the canal of Frankel Estate and St. Patrick Secondary School towards the overhead bridge that connects Marine Parade Estate to the East Coast Park Beach.
Along the beach, you will see lots of picnickers, cyclists, joggers and roller skaters; you will feel the sea breeze, the ships lining up at the horizon and the richness of green matured trees giving us shades. Further down the walk, you will reach the activities section like the Cable Ski Park, the Skateboard Park, the anglers at the jetty. Looking towards inland, you will see the skyline of East Coast with the many condominiums, HDB flats and the city front.
We can walk a little further down to see the Bougainvillea garden with many colors of the flowers. You may take notes on how you can grow the plant by transplant on sandy soil and cocoa pits; or if you want a multi color flowering specie, try marcotting the various species on the stems of an anchor plant which could produce the multi-color effects of the Bougainvillea plant.
Walking back towards the ‘East Coast Lagoon Food Village’ try the famous rojak, cuttlefish kangkong, satay beehoon, sambal stingray and many others. It can be very crowded though.
There is a feeder bus 401 that can take you to Bedok Interchange. It travels thru part of Marine Parade Road, Siglap Road, New Upper Changi Road and ends at Bedok Interchange.
Do bring along your drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), repellent, sun block, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.
See you at the walk!

Thus far 2 small groups have been to yunnan this year. Below is a simple write up by Victor Wee, his thoughts on the trip for those who need to know abit about Yunnan and wish to join future trips. There should be another one in October 2009. If you wish to go, please email me so that we can keep you informed which is better than referring to the posting.
There are some inquiries regarding doing volunteer work, teaching life skills, english or even doing simple, non competitive and non-stressful golden age business so as to have something to indulge in traveling. Again please email me at ethniceast@gmail.com if i do not yet have your email address.
Another thought floating around is the idea of short term stay and retreat living in "eternal spring Yunnan" where everyday is spring. There should be a link below where you can sight some of the photos, till we hear from you……
About Our Trip………….
Yunnan is situated on a plateau and surrounded by mountains mainly. The temperature during summer is about 24 Deg C and 5 Deg C in winter. It does not snow in the region, nevertheless the mountains would be snow capped. The climate is comfortable enough in summer seldom above 27 Deg C. The region is at an altitude of 1200 to 3000+ m above sea level from Kunming to Zhongdian (Shangri-La).
Return airfare from Singapore to Kunming ranges from $600 to $900 depending on whether high or low seasons and Airline companies. The very low fare of $382 is more a bonus. Taxi fare within the city starts at 8Yuan. On average to places we frequent it ranges from 15 – 20Yuan. Public buses are very affordable at 1Yuan (we had not tried).
Inter-cities coaches cost about $25 and are very comfortable. The toilets at the pit stop needs getting use to. Interstate train travel on first class sleeper is about $35 and comfortable. The toilet on board is good enough but will need a bit of balancing act and squatting skills. The road and rail network are impressive considering this being a less developed area.
Meat and vegetables are readily available. Fish and prawns are the freshwater types with limited variety. This is not the place for seafood lovers. Vegetables are always fresh and plentiful. Wild mushrooms are wonderful, great for steam boat, but need to wait till raining seasons. Eating out and socializing is a must even for work and business.
The food prepared here are from what’s available in the markets. You can have your meal from the roadside stall at about 3 Yuan or 20 Yuan at restaurants. Food is generally stir fried and is swimming in oil. The oil used is rapeseed oil (not the best but I supposed it suites them well). Beer is at 3.50 Yuan per bottle. Rice noodle is a more common staple than grain rice. Beef is plentiful and appears to be the predominant meat next to pork. In the old part of Dali and Lijiang, dinning by the waterway is most interesting by day and night.
Serviced apartments in Kunming cost $50 per night .The comfort level is like 4 star.
Living in court yard inns in the old city of Dali and Lijiang cost $25 per night and was indeed a memorable experience.
There are plentiful shopping areas. In Kunming, the shopping facilities are like Home.
In Dali and Lijiang old town, the shopping is a world of its own where merchandise are sold in preserved ancient shop houses. Window shopping is also satisfying if you have no more money left. Leather (Ox or Yak leather) goods are indeed worth buying (ask the ladies on the trip). Bright spectrum of colors of the merchandise reflects the many ethnic groups of the region. Lijiang is very crowded on all days. The crowd is like that of our Chinatown, and during holiday period, like Disneyland theme park. Dali is like Lijiang but a smaller scale and less crowded
Not much to say here except that TCM facilities and pharmacies are readily available.
Farming is all around and your waste would be put to good use.
Trekking will leave you no time for anything else.
Photography will run you out of memory space.
Language will keep your tongue twisted with the countless dialects. There are 25 ethnic nationalities here in Yunnan. Even yunnanese is a dialect in China.
Foodies will be well lubricated at toilet breaks sometimes overly. Need getting used to it and according to the season of the year. Every other taste here needs to be acquired.
In Lijiang visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Region and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
Watch the ever popular cultural show at the foothills and explore the region on horseback.
In Dali try the chairlift up the Cangshan mountains ridge.
In Kunming visit the Minority Village and be prepared to spend half a day. The Stone Forest region and Jiu Xiang (Stone Cave) will take a full day.

Date: 1 August 2009 (Saturday)
Meeting Place: Bishan MRT nearby control station
Start Time: 4.30pm
Duration: about 1 1/2 hours
EOs for this walk: Jeffrey Lim and Charles Wee
Bishan to Peirce Reservoir Boardwalk
The walk will be in 2 parts. The first which many of you would be familiar with – Bishan Park, a very easy ‘civilised’ route on paved footpaths but nevertheless pleasant, amongst lots of greenery.
The second part will be across Thomson Road to Peirce Reservoir where we will walk along the water’s edge. The path though will be easy along the board walk with water on one side and forest on the other. The final stage will be through the forest but still along the board walk ending at Old Thomson Road.
Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito
repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes. Note that
while mosquito repellent may be a good general precaution, liberal
doses may drive away insects that you wish to observe!
Walk ends at Old Thomson Road and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Casuarina Road, the famous roti prata or the adjacent zhi char.
See you at the walk!

Hi All
The 5 of us are tied down by personal commitment / matters. As such, we apologise that we have to cancel the session for July.
Ah Nee, Douglas, Jade, Lily n YK
Two year ago, SHC had it’s first overnight & overseas event :
2D/1N – SHC Overnight Gathering @ Sijori Resort, Batam.
The idea was originally poached by Terence but relegated to my charge simply because I volunteered to help him with the logistic. And so, I became the EO of this event.
On the morning of 07.07.07 – about 40 of us SHCians met at HarbourFront for this trip. It was a very wet morning, raining meow meow & woof woof but it didn’t dampen our spirit despite the fact that some of us met for the very first time.
Two years on, many of these trippers became solid supporters of SHC. Some even became EOs for SHC events & activities – ad hoc or regular basis.
Looking at the date today, got me all nostalgic. I not only have had alot of fun but also got to know many fun loving gals during this trip. I also found a buddy in Dolly & great friendship in Yew Kwong.
I wonder if others, who have gone on this trip, felt the same way,…. experience something special…. or otherwise…..
