SHC monthly gathering – Sun, 15 Mar 2009

For planning purposes, the March monthly gathering will likely be held as follows:

  • Venue:  Somewhere in Little India Civil Sports club @ Tessensohn Road  Likely to be changed again.
  • Date:  Likely Sun 15 Mar 2009.
  • Time:  1500  – 1900 hrs.
  • Entrance:  Free, except if buffet and drinks needed.
  • Dress code:  As you would wear on a Sunday.
  • Event Organiser:  Will be announced at a later date.

We have not had a Sunday monthly gathering for many moons.  To cater to those who have been missing during the weekday gatherings, this event will be held on a Sunday.  It will revolve around getting to know one another, activities with a pool view and plenty of fresh air.  If organised properly, there will be a sound system, with DVD player, music and amplifier.  Enough seating for everbody, to chat.  Focus will be new and old members.  For those who have no lunch, the thinking is to have a little buffet or a BBQ.  And, if you love to sing, I think there are opportunities too.  Now, all these thinking is still at thinking stage.

For new members, and old members, please keep this date.  Details will be available after the Feb monthly gathering.

Meantime, I like to start to look out for a number of SHCians to help make this event fun.  If you are fun, not very serious, always with a smile, colourful and helpful.  One of my philosophies is "A little disorganisation" is fun.  It’s fun to be a SHCian.  Please raise your hand.

Stars-in-Concert (Grand finale) – your feedback

Last night was the most memorable night for our Stars in concert.  They gave us a fantastic performance on stage, complete with songs from different languages, dialects, costumes and dance background.  The Stars poured out their hearts, and drew emotions of friendship and closeness.

True to SilverHairs, the audience gave their hearts back in return too.  They screamed, yell, whistle, stand and clap to see their fellow SilverHairs friends, expressing their love, sadness and joy.  Standing or sitting in the auditorium, one would have felt the immense closeness between audience and Stars.

After exactly two years of conceptualising Stars-in-Concert, we had a wonderful and dedicated committee to make this event come wildy memorable.  A truly heartwarming evening indeed.  I hope  you have enjoyed the concert.

On behalf of the committee, and everybody who had a hand in the show.

CNY Tim Sum lunch – Feb 2009

Each year, we try to go out for lunch during the Lunar New Year festive season.  I believe a Tim Sum lunch with Chinese tea would be great.  Last year, we held ours at the Fortunate restaurant in Tao Payoh.  After the lunch, the groups went out for further more private get-togethers.

To read about last year’s CNY lunch, click here.  https://silverhairsclub.com/2008/02/1395.

I am a believer we should keep the cost down; so as a target, we should try to keep to last year’s cost.  This way, we can get more people to attend.  We should continue to have our bear hug when we meet one another.  Fortunate restaurant is fantastic.  Of course, we can have the lunch at the Red restaurant.  Can even be held in Chinatown.  It’s great on the mood and the season.  Oranges of the same size, eyes facing up, everybody in red, ladies with pony tails and guys in china slippers.  We could target 50 pax.

Would you like to be the Event Organiser?  Let’s bring in the new year.

Terence Seah

Do you know of a place to hold small talks?

We have always been looking for small places to hold talks.  But very often, the venue does not give us the flexibility or the tools to hold small talks.  Please look around; and if you have some suggestions for a avenue which fits our needs, please raise your hand.

  • Installed equipment included overhead projectors, screens, TV, with notebook connections, internet access (preferably wireless), microphones.
  • Seating capacity of 20 – 40 pax.
  • Very flexible with numbers.  This could be an existing cafe or lounge.
  • Ideally, no charge for the use of the venue.  The venue should have its own F&B.
  • Located close to MRT and public transport.

Know of such a place?  Terence Seah

      Hi James,

Your slot 2 should read 7.30-7.45pm. What’s a challenging tasks for you to cope! Are you considering to include line dancing?

Lily Ho, shall we perform the Latin cha cha as we did at the last D n D or coming up with a new set of dance?

Molly Chus, how about a dance item, perhaps Waltz? Now that the SNF is down with a fever, let’s channel the energy here!

Ron Wie, how about getting your jamming team to sing and the dancers will follow in tune?

It’s a time to destress and unwind and at the same time riding on the unhappiness that beset us! Sometimes going through a bad patch helps us to re-inforce the good things in life that we took for granted!

At this point in life, let’s dance whenever the occasion called for, let’s sing the blues away, let’s live as there so much to live for!

Let’s make this monthly gathering something different. Put our hands together to help James. There will also be a lot of new friend to meet, let’s also make it a time for healings!

      Hi James

Thanks for your invitation to perform at your coming Oct’s gatherings. Alice and I are sorry to say that we are not able to accept, as we have a prior engagement on a wedding reception on that day in question. Moreover, we do dance only for enjoyment ourselves and for fun, we do not like to perform.

We wish you the best endeavour in the forth-coming dance show case.

SHC monthly Gathering, Sun 17 Aug 2008 at ECP

SHC monthly Gathering, Sun 17 Aug 2008.  We will try out Sunday morning at ECP, and see the response.  However, this gathering is confirmed ON.

    • Date: Sun, 17 Aug 2008
    • Time: 0800 hrs – 12 hrs (noon)
    • Venue:  Burger King at ECP
    • Strictly for SHC members only.  Please bring your name tag.
    • Event Organiser: Ron Lai

Some tips on transportation to ECP:

    • There are several underground tunnels leading from one side of the road of the ECP to the other side (sea-front). The one, most convenient, leading to BURGER KING is situated between Blk 14 n 18 at Marine Terrace, off Marine Parade Rd. From Marine Parade Rd bus stop, it takes 15/20mins to walk towards the tunnel. Bus services operating along Marine Parade Rd are: 31, 36, 43, 48, 55, 76, 135, 197, 853 with additional services: 13, 16, 76A, 135A, 196 n 646 operating along the same road towards Changi.
    • For those who are taking public buses to Marine Parade Road, stop at BLK 58/57, cut across the void deck of HDB estate to Marine Terrace towards BLK 14/18, thus facing the TUNNEL leading to BURGER KING outlet.

Tips on Burger King at ECP:

    • There is only ONE MacD at East Coast Parkway, next door is Hongkong Restaurant to the left and Bowling Alley to the right of MacD. The one mentioned at Big Splash is KFC, not MacD. Talking of direction facing is usually standing at the main road/srvice road, facing the outlet.

Pictures of SHC 17 July 2008 monthly gathering

Here are the pictures of the SHC monthly gathering at Kovan.  This is an open air area, infront of Paya Labar Kovan cc.   F&B is provided by the venue owner.

Have a look at the pictures.  Give us your feedback of the place, good or bad.  If your comments are slightly positive, we might hold another event here again. Oops, in my mind, and maybe, the hokkien songs singalong, a talent-time or event a dance performance, even a talk.

From all participants, thank you Ah Nee for being a vibrant Event Organiser and host of this monthly event.  And, also thanks to Grace Wong for printing our personalised name tag, and both Grace and Janet Heng for managing the registration desk.  Also, the impromptu dance performance and the international chess competition.  And, thanks to Molly Chua for the chirpy chips and the few beer contributors.  A warm welcome too to the new members.

Now, that most of you know what the SHC monthly gathering is all about, and am secretly hoping to be an Event Organiser, plse raise your hand or speak with any fellow SHCians.  To view the pictures, plse click here.

Overnite at ECP & SHC gathering on Sat/Sun 16-17 Aug 2008

Hi SHCians,  be crazy, and give your SilverHairs years a change.  Remember I was saying that one day, we should have a gathering on a Sunday.  Well, this early morning I had a walk at the East Coast Parkway, together with Ron Lai.  I must say a Sunday morning gathering can be very refreshing.  So, to start with, here is the real dream.   An overnight camp at ECP, with the aim of having SHCians get to know one another better, and making new and more friends.  Followed, by a gathering on a refreshing Sunday morning.

    • Session 1 – Sat 1200 1500 hrs – Build a 2 to 4 pax tent at ECP.  Check in time.  Participants should share the cost of a tent.  Go look at Carrfourre, check out costs and share with us here.  If you have not camped for years, this is real fun.  Campers decide their own camp-mates.  I shall ask Yew Kwong and cycling team for their advice on the exact camp location, near Burger King, taking toilets into consideration.
    • Session 2 – Sat 1800 hrs – BBQ.  Concept: Charcoal and fire will be provided.  Bring your own meat and sweet potatoes, just for yourself.  Daylight BBQ, to make sure we see what is cooked.  You can bring your own food and drinks.  Stay flexible. Now,  replaced with a potluck.
    • Session 3 – Sat night – Camp overnight.  Do whatever you like.  You can go fishing, chit-chatting, swimming, having a beer or two somewhere, watch the submarines swimming out in the open seas, aiyoh up to individuals.  I think can count falling stars too.  Bring your guitars.  Gate close at 12mn.
    • Session 4 – Sun 0800 hrs morning – Wake up early for SHC gathering at camping area and at Burger King.  For non-campers, come join the SHC gathering.  Breakfast on individual ac.
    • Sunday 12nn – Check out and go home.  I shall ask Ron Lai to assist with providing bus service information to Burger King.

The above event is confirmed.  It will go on, irrespective of weather and number of pax.  There is no charge to participate in the above activity, except as mentioned above.

    Terence Seah

A registration list will be started.  Please indicate the sessions you will be attending.  You can also attend one session.  If you like the fun to knowing SHCians better, come for all four sessions.  Strictly for registered SilverHairsClub members only.

    • Terence Seah – Session 1, 2, 3, 4.  Please accept my apology, as this is the only weekend I am in Spore.  Now, who wants to share my tent?
    • Lily Ho – Session 3 & 4.  Thinking of squeezing into Terence’s tent.
    • Dolly Lim – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.
    • Yew Kwong – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.

Future venue for SHC monthly gatherings – Hans Cafe @ Upper Pickering

Hi everybody,  here is an update of how I think we will handle future SHC monthly gatherings.  Our membership will continue to grow, and it is becoming more difficult to find a place that can cater to our group size.  Some suggestions came up, and we have yet to explore.  They include Downtown East, Burger King (East coast parkway) and Terminal 2 Food court.  Please continue to make recommendations.

Here are our guidelines for venues:

    • Place should be near to MRT station or public transport.
    • Venue should allow flexibility on the number of pax and amount spent.
    • Venue operator provide food and drinks over the counter; as SHC should focus on its core objective, of provide a platform for members to meet new friends.

So far, Hans Cafe & Restaurant @ Great Eastern has met our basic requirements.  However, because of our size, we have naturally upgrade our noise level; affecting other diners.  As Hans Cafe is a business; and we are making use of the place, there is reasonable expectation requiring us to purchase drinks and food from the venue.

Currently, we are in the process of arranging with Hans management on the above; as well as how we can make our noise tolerable to other dinners.  We hope to resolve this by end July 2008.  A lady member is currently helping to facilitate the above issue.

Once we come to a firm arrangement, it is likely we will hold the monthly gathering at Hans, once a month.  There will be two sessions; one for retired SilverHairs and one for still-working SilverHairs. We will also increase the numbers from 150 pax to 200 and 300 pax.  I hope Hans Cafe will be a great meeting place for SilverHairs, once a month.

Please offer your thoughts, suggestions and comments.

    Terence Seah

SHC monthly gathering – Sun, 17 Aug 2008

The August gathering will be a refreshing change.  It will be held on a Sunday early morning.  Some of you obviously have your Sunday morning activity, while for some, a Sunday may be your marketing or house-cleaning day.  But, we have to give this timing a try; and see if it works for most of us.

    • Date: Sunday, 17 Aug 2008.
    • Time: Likely 0700 – 1100 hours
    • Venue:  Not decided yet.  You can and should have a say.  Should be at or near a MRT station.

Please keep this date in your diary.

    SHC Monthly Meeting

Hans is an OK place to have our monthly meetings but I yearn for a place with notebook computer access. For lack of a better place I am recommending our members to do an online petition to persuade our founder to use Scorebot for our next meeting as it has internet facilities. While it’s seating capacity is limited it has enough standing capacity to create an informal  and cosy atmosphere.  Our founder is reluctant to do so because of conflict of interest but if members can persuade him in this thread I am sure he may reconsider! Our founder feels "pai sei" or awkward as he has a vested interest in the prosperity of the outlet but as long as we get a fair and good deal I strongly feel its a win -win situation for all parties. If unconvinced I would suggest we use it as a base and hangout for members until we are able to find other suitable places with internet access and than we can rotate and come back to Scorebot on alternate months or use it in lieu of unavailability of suitable locations."What say you fellow SHC members?"…support a good cause!

In the meantime any suggestions for other suitable locations with internet access? Is anybody a member of any country club who can negotiate use of one of their outlets or unutilised ballroom for one of their slow nights since it is a weekday usually.

Pictures of SilverHairsClub June 2008 gathering

    Hi everybody,

Based our registration desk, handled by Grace Wong and Janet Heng, 130 SHCians attended the June gathering at Hans Cafe last night.

There will be a few sets of photos, and they will be added here over the next few days.  Hope you have enjoyed the company of fellow SHCians; and that you will have found new friends to enable you to pursue your interests.  Go cycling, walking, travel, dancing, chatting, afternoon, invest, make your own jewellery, origami, gosh, name it.  … Make your SilverHairs years more meaningful and fun.

Cheers.  And, am hearing oldies "San Francisco", "Danny’s song" and "Puppy Love" over the radio this morning.

June Monthly gathering – Wed, 4 Jun 2008

Hi all SHCians attending the monthly gathering,

Most of us are new to one another.  Dont be shy.  Introduce yourself to one another.  Make sure your name tag is clearly visible to your friends around.  Don’t sit down throughout the whole evening.  If you really do not know where to start, ask the registration desk, or Mary Chan.  For the seasoned members, you know what to do.

Last two days, I was reminded that there was no May monthly gathering.  Excuse was, May was very crowded, so the monthly gathering was not called.  We must try not to skip the monthly gatherings.

Well, let’s have another one.  Details as follows:

    • Venue:  To be announced soon.  Confirmed at Hans Cafe, Great Eastern Bldg, China Square, Pickering Street.

    • As this is a SHC monthly event, no direct selling of goods and services here please.  No discussions on politics, sex, race, or religion.

Mthly Gathering – suggestion for a venue

    SHCian,

I have loged in the SHC Web this morning & noted Terence & June mentioned can be arrange some changes in next gatherings. May I propose Downtown East in Pasir Ris, as on & off there will  have some entertainments in the open spare event hall, we can take dinner/drink at the restraurant or hang around the corner in the resort as there just build a new shopping centre, for those who love to sign karaoka also sing at K-box.

    Thank you.

Pictures of the 17 April 2008 monthly gathering

Dan Huang, our dedicated photographer, has sent in the photos of the April monthly gathering at Hans Cafe.  Thanks to June Chin who was the event organiser.  We had a fun painting session.

A  typical monthly gathering is usually organised over two sessions; an early one for those who have retired and can come as early as 3pm, and a later session starting at 6pm for those SHCians who have to rush here after work.

How about a change in format?  Think whack, think crazy. Do you have another venue where we can host more than 50 – 80 people?  The preference is the venue should cater for the F&B, not expensive and reasonable variety.  The venue should be flexibile with people numbers, and we avoid committing fixed pax.  If we can make noise, great.
