Health Benefits of Swimming

– Swimming is a good exercise. Swimming involves the use of almost all the muscles required for movement, without the weight of your body pounding you with each move like when you are walking or running.emoticon

– Water resistance is greater than air resistance, so that the muscles have to work harder.

– Regular swimming will build your muscle strength, endurance, and cardio-vascular fitness. The longer you swim, the more your endurance and speed will improve.

– Without overworking the heart, swimming improves the body’s use of oxygen and increases lung function.

– Swimming stimulates circulation.emoticon

– Swimming promotes proper breathing.

– Swimming helps to combat the aging process.

– Swimming burns calories at about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight and improves one’s ability to control and maintain a healthy weight.

– Swimming is fantastic for toning the upper arms, shoulders and legs. The best strokes for whole body toning are the freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.

When you swim, cool water lower your body temperature, so that you don’t get hot and sticky as when you do other forms of exercise or sports.

– Swimming is more than a fun sport and a way to stay healthy.emoticon

Well, I am tempted to start swimiing session on a Sunday morning from 9.00-11.00am. Not many will go for the vigorous badminton because of niggling pain to the knees!

Need I say more, Swimming session starts somewhere in October. There may be coaching lesson too, let’s me check the rate.

How about some feedbacks?

Josephine Phang – Profile

Hi,

My name is Josephine and although I have been following the activities and postings of SHC members from time to time, I have not joined a single SHC event.

Have been travelling quite a fair till recently and have decided to post my profile and will likely come for the SHC Monthly Meeting this month.

Just a bit about myself, I am still gainfully employed and am keen to learn everything on retirement and how to age gracefully and live meaningfully in a society like ours.

I think it is always good to widen my circle of friends and get to know more people. So hope to see most of you on 17 Aug 08.

Cheers,

Jo

Low Ming Choo – Profile

Dear friends,

I was delighted to read about this club in the ST 20 July 2008.  A check on the website tells of a vibrant group of happy people with diverse interests and lots of energy.  This is just what I have been looking for since I retired from work a few years ago – an opportunity for like-minded people to gather and make good use of the leisure that we have worked so long and hard for.

I am 62 with two grown-up children.  I have spent more than 20 years as an educator and10 years in publicity publishing.  When my younger child graduated a few years ago, I decided it was time to quit my formal job and for other things in life. My interests are quite sedentary – reading, experimental cooking, meditation.  My husband, 64, and I have done some leisurely traveling and did some ‘serious’ courses the last few years.  Terence’s idea of short stays in Thailand and the neighboring countries is appealing.

I have been exploring the concept of “ Aging in place”.  It is a term used in the States for the system that caters to elderly people who prefer to grow old in the comfort of their homes, versus living in institutions. This involves preparing their homes for convenient use as they age; having the relevant essential services, like, house care and medical care within easy call.  With the system in place, the elderly can continue to live independently in familiar surroundings and friends for as long as life permits them.  Any one here among us, is interested in exploring this concept with me?  I will draw up a framework for discussion.

Congratulations to the pioneers for bringing forth the SilverHairs Club and the energetic members who sustain it. I look forward to your next gathering.  I am due for a knee operation this afternoon and hope it will recover enough for me to join all of you on the 17th.  Otherwise I can read all about the meeting on the Forum.

Warm regards,
Ming Choo

Tan Chin Boon – Profile

Hi folks

Profile of a new kid on the block – Tan Chin Boon

At last, it took me two days to find this empty site just to add in my personal profile as "demanded" by our President and founder of SHC Mr. Terence Seah. So, to begin with, why not modify this website from time to time to make it more user-friendly. That’s my first comment for the day. See, I told you giving my FRANK thoughts sometimes hurt and there may be repercussion. Ok, sock it to me, pal.

That’s my basic attitude to you, but back to serious business i.e. my profile. Now, what can I say about myself? Oh, I’m a guy of course. Ex-banker, now happily retired and "gainfully unemployed". Spending my time on golf 4-5 days a week, two days on gym, internet news and trading, emails, walking my favourite pet dog Bam-Bam practically every day, cycling with him in a ragged bag on the handlebar,  listening to jazz music, and killing time on my 42" plasma TV with solid HBO, Star Movies, AXN, ESPN, National Geographic, Discovery, etc and a host of reality shows. But primarily to keep fit and trim at all times.

For the guys, I participate in Mahjong and Russian poker sporadically. Apart from golf, I used to bowl (pretty good at it but no longer), take active part in big walk, cycling on my mountain bike for miles on end but age forbids that nowadays, swimming at the beaches overseas while holidaying. I love to travel and did quite a bit too, to various countries mostly on own itinerary. In fact, WAYN website has me registered for travel up to 14% of the countries in the world. Of late, I travel with golfing friends to nearby countries like Thailand, China, Philippines, and Indonesia, the last being Guangzhou in January. So, any of you guys plan any travel programme with golf in mind, do let me know. BTW,  I travel more on budget airlines nowadays.

For the ladies, I am no longer the old-fashioned MBA, but a triple A (available Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace) for karaoke, movie shows (only the blockbusters like the Red Cliff and The Mummy – tomb of the dragon emperor. Prefer to watch HBO for free), group gathering for makan, and now at SHC, social dance.  I’m not sure about golfing with ladies, coz they tee off at ladies’ teebox and you can’t talk the men’s talk, ya. Karaoke wise, I croak only the older English songs like Barry Manilow’s hits, and the newer Chinese songs like Jackie Chan. Normally I let the crowd sing first to feel the vibes before I select the appropriate songs. So bear with me, ladies.

There is something about SHC that attracts me. First of all, I wasn’t made aware of its existence through S.T. ads but a chance meeting and chatting for the first time with Steven Chan at a dog show 2 days ago. Browsing through the various forums at the SHC website, I note there are a lot of vibrancies and cheerfulness among the in-crowd. There are lots of activities to participate in apparently, and you ladies are such a wild and enthusiastic bunch. I was taken aback by the response when I chipped in my little comments here and there, people who don’t even know me or what I might look like. But they sound like old friends already with their spontaneous dialogue. This is so different from my usual groups like the NUS alumni, Dunearnites, and Ex-UOB colleagues with whom the usual activities are monthly gathering over lunch or dinner, occasional outings or karaoke, but that’s about it, no dialogue through forum on website, no active involvement to stimulate the mind, and any activities are mainly individual arrangments.

But there again, it’s too soon to judge the validity of this statement. I shall have to wait and see what goes on in the coming months at SHC. Basically, I’m a BIG BORE!emoticon

My Western Side K’OK group

Rollerblading….anyone?

Hi, my name is Stella, 48 years old.  Main hobbies are swimming, cycling, rollerblading, mahjong and reading.  I am looking for friends who are interested to go rollerblading.  I am not a professional in this sport.  Just started sometimes in October last year and have not been rollerblading for about 2 to 3 months due to work commitment.  Wanted to start again.  Its a good form of exercise.

Mid Autumn Free Gang Bang, @ NSRCC 12 & 13 Sept

Hi all ,

The Bungalow at NSRCC will be an open house to all SHC members to drop in anytime just to gang bang with all other SHC members.  So feel free to drop in with a few other members etc.  Come and bring whatever you want to share , either a story, a scrabble game, carrom game, card games , mah jong, titbits, etc.

It will be free except for the events that are already organised as follows:-

  • Friday Pm – Golf game at NRSRCC,
  • Friday Pm – Bungalow is totally free – for anything, scrabble , maj jong ,etc
  • FRiday Eve – Love of Country Music and Line Dance Event, $5 free coffee, tea, and Meal (Mini Potluck bring something to share)
  • Sat Pm – ‘Hair Cutting Class’ from 2 to 4 pm  , $5 free coffee , tea ,
  • Sat Night (inside Bungalow) – Social Dance and Line Dance, etc
  • Sat Night ( Beach outside) – Free and carefree Pot Luck and Camping event, bring your tent, lantern, fishing rod and join Terence , Douglas and others.  There will be a campfire (lantern) sing a long session till early hours. BYOB and snacks, etc.

Only charge will be $5 for each Indoor event for the whole day, except golf and other activities provided by the club like bowling, canoeing, etc.  Chalet rooms are available for bookings.

But for anyone who is free and just want to drop in with a group of frends to play cards, scrabble, carrom,  or mah jong please feel free to do so and just drop in and have this gang bang.  Terence may have an orgy at the beach in the wee hours, whatever that means.

Please take note, I will not be making any money from this event and whatever is collected hopefully can pay for the rental of the bungalow which will amount to about $500 , with GST and electricity, water chargers.  I am willing to cover this total cost as part of giving back what I have enjoyed from SHC for the last 2 years.  However what I hope is that what i can collect back can be used to book another chalet again for Dec, in this way I hope that there can be a sort of Chalet activity every quarterly, that is close to being free to all SHC members.

So for all those SHC members who want to have a place to share your interests, games or stories in a nice resort enrvironment, please feel free to do so. It will be free, but you have to give way to the main events, by moving to other areas, like the swimming pool, beach area, etc around the resort. But if there is nothing going on in the bungalow you are free to enjoy the air-con.   Cheers.

SilverHairsClub – some one to lead SHC in early 2010

I like to share my thoughts on the future plans of SilverHairsClub.  In two years time, I plan to relocate to Thailand to spend more time with my family.  This means I shall be here in Singapore, maybe once a year.  As such, I like to start the thinking process on the future running of SilverHairsClub and SilverHairsClub.com.  As discussed before, SHCians prefer SilverHairsClub to remain in its current format and culture.  This has been decided, and not likely to change.  To read past discussions, click here.

Do also note that SHC Corporate will proceed, and will be developed over the next two years.  This will include Blue Helmet projects.

In my mind, I would like to look for someone to lead SHC, in two years time.  If you are visible during SHC gatherings, known to members, IT smart, prepared to commit the time, accept the rules of the club and SHC culture, membership must remain free, no advertising, etc, please put your name on this thread.

If members have ideas and visions for the future, we can discuss them here, for this person to take note. Please do not send me emails on this topic.  Doubt I can manage.   We discuss here openly for members to see.  Do be sensitive to other SHCians views and comments.  This thread will remain open until then.

Healthy Cooking Made Easy Culinary Class – Aug 23, 2008

Dear Budding Chefs and friends at SHC!

I have received some positive feedback from fellow SHC members for us to have our first cooking get-together . emoticon I did consider doing this the “cheaper” way but decided to take the “no fuss” way out instead of having to impose on anyone, to wreck their kitchens or have to go through the hassle of getting all the ingredients and having to clean up afterwards!  Erks…just the thought of it!

We only have to pay a fee ($50 per pax) and we get a fabulous goodie bag worth $150 (which includes a limited edition Brandt mitten and apron set, a Scanpan umbrella and potholder plus $100 cooking class gift voucher from a renowned cooking school inlcuding a lucky draw!  I know the chef, she’s actually a client of mine as I design most of her marketing collaterals.  She’s got a wonderful cooking studio too near Portsdown Road.

Anyway, details of this class :

  • Venue : Copthorne Kings Hotel, 403 Havelock Road
  • Time : Session 1 at 11 am – 2 pm or Session 2 at 4 pm – 7 pm (let me know your preferred timing too)

Please confirm by August 8th so I can get the seats booked as it is first-come-first serve basis.

We will get to sample dishes which includes Zucchinni Parcel – King Oyster Mushroom with Mesclun Salad, Pan Seared Wild Ocean Trout with Tofu & Honey Kumquat Sauce and Chocolate Mousse with Strawberry Jelly!

In this way, we will have more time to mingle and get to know one another, especially for those of us who are new to SHC.  I would love to see all of you face-to-face for a proper introduction.  It will be nice to put a face to these emails.  So, those of you who are interested, please leave me a comment with your preferred time and contact details so I can do the coordination with you offline.  Oh, and the good news is if I can round up 15 pax or more, I can get a 10% bulk discount.  Please extend this invitation to your other Silver friends too! emoticon

Look forward to getting some positive feedback and have our first cooking meet on Aug 23rdemoticon

Cheers, Diana

Travel in Autumn

Dear all at SilverHairsClub,

Anyone care to share their 2 cents worth on driving from New York to Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Niagara in the parks, returning from Toronto, Coastal drive to Ottawa and straight back to NYC.   Would appreciate some advice as to which one or two of the regions to skip so that we can drive more leisurely.   Our main objective is to go the Niagara Falls, and would love to catch to autumn leaves along the scenic drive and if our planned route is ideal for a 11 days trip.

thanks…….

Roy Koh – Profile

Hi everybody

I just come to know about this club from an article in the ST. and feel that it is a good  idea to come together to engage in some healthy activities.  Just a brief introduction of myself. I retired in Jan 2005 after almost 40 years in the teaching service. To keep myself mentally active, I give tuition classes at CDAC centres and some private tuition in secondary school maths.

My interests are mainly travelling, food, and light exercises to keep fit. My wife has also joined the club. She will be retiring in 2 weeks’ time. We have 2 grown-up sons one of whom is married and living on their own. We feel this is the time for us to sit back and relax, enjoy life and making new friends of similar interests.

We hope to meet many friends in the club and look forward to the coming get together in Oct. In the meantime have a good week ahead.

Cheers

Regards

Short golfing Trip to Malaysia, Bintan or Thailand

Hi Tian Soo, Anthony, Janet, SH and all golfing and travel enthusiast.

I
am game for a day game, or a short overnight trip.  My suggestions
will be at Malacca , "Tiara" or Genting ‘Awana’ , Banang in Batu
Pahat.  Also looking forward to playing in Cameron or Fraser Hill
or any other courses.

Longer trips to Thailand can be considered
too, and one golf course I have in mind is the one at the River Kwai,
really countryside and remote but you can visit the Tiger TEmple and
dine on the river cruise.

By the way our first SHC golf
competition is on at NSRCC on the 12th Sept and we have 2 flights
almost fillled up already, with one available slot. But if anyone else
wants to join in we can still get another flight however it will under
Tian Soo’s guest rate not the Chalet’s rate .

So start swinging
your clubs at the range but most important have fun too. If anyone
wants to meet to share some tips at the range I am game for such fun,
email me at bswi@yahoo.com Cheers.

HI to all the SHC members.  I had briefly joined the SHC club last year but only by email with the SHC administrator then.  But having received regular emails and updates of the SHC club, I am honoured to join in as a new member to your big family.

I am 51 years, married with two kids, one age 19 and one age 13, a girl and a boy.  I love jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming and travelling.  My husband and I jog regularly 3 times a week at the east coast park.  I stay at Siglap area and had worked with two big banks for 15 years before I stayed at home to tuition my 2 kids.  I had worked with the consumer bank and the merchant bank.

I admired the energy, the fun and jokes, all the general information posted on the SHC website by the members  and I enjoyed reading them, and at the same time learning so much general knowledge.  I too hope to be able to share mine given the opportunity to do so.

So, I hope to jog my way to your Aug meeting at the east coast park to meet the members there.

Hi all members  !

My name is Shirleen. I’m new here and got to know SilverHairClub from ST article.

When I login to the web site and came to know the club hv alot of activities which I like most of them and made me hv no reason not to join you all.

Although I can sometimes be fairly shy when meeting new people for the 1st time but it would be nice to make new friends in my life to share and experience various activities, outing, evening etc.,..

I love to learn new things and experience all sort of difference culture. Food is always a good pass time on my time table beside music.

My hobbies includes dancing, travelling, music, movies, chit chatting, cycling, etc.,..

Looking forward to meet all the nice people and make new friends here.

Have a nice week end !

Cheers !  Shirleen  :)

Silver Is The New Gold

Wonder how many of you out there shares the same idea that Life begins only at 50!? :)  This is that phase of our life where we want to ponder and reflect on what we have achieved so far.  Did we do well, relatively well or are there is more we can do??  And I’m hoping that through this platform, I will be able to link up with like-minded individuals to share some experiences, exchange ideas and to see if there are possibilities for us to add more value and excitement to each other’s life through our exchanges and sharing.

I work for a publishing company and is responsible for business development.  Outside of work, I enjoy the nature, outdoor activities like golf and swimming.  Cooking is one of my life long passion and I love all things concerning food!  Never had the opportunity to make it into a business or be a celebrity chef yet but quite happy to whip up a meal anytime for my close friends!  :)

Walk July 08

Here are some ways you can help me when sending the photographs to me oicheng55@yahoo.com.sg for uploading.

  1. type in the name and date of the event under subject
  2. email the photographs in its original state or better still in a zip file
  3. if the gathering of the event is small, say less than 10, you can give me the names of attendees so I can include in the album
  4. do not send me links to your web-based personal photo album as I am unable to extract the photos from there as the format would have been changed

Monthly walk – PipeLine Ramble 2, Sat 2 Aug 2008

Date: 02 August 2008 (Saturday)

Start Time: we shall start the walk at 4.15pm sharp! Do plan to arrive punctually.
Duration:  3 hours.

Meeting Point:
Bus-stop at Farrer Court, Farrer Road (near Holland Road/Queensway, not Bukit Timah)

Getting There:
Buses available along both sides of Farrer Road: 48, 93, 153, 165, 174, 186, 855 and 961 (check it out!  Need guidance, do drop me an email with your contact, it is easier to explain over the phone).

Leaders for this walk:  JeffreyLim & ChristinaCL Chan.

We did the 1st ramble "PLR-I" in April 2008; the trial ended at Farrer Court.  So, in continuation the ramble shall begin from where it ended………

The terrain is undulating.  It is not the “usual walk in the park”. There are some rough sections.
It is exploratory. It as a Mini Trek!

This 2nd segment provides some excitement as there are at least 2 obstacles to challenge perhaps, our spirit of boldness; a leap/step of faith into the unknown!emoticon

One challenge offers a short "slide" down the side of the huge pipe, then "lift" or "heave" oneself up  4-feet wall; your very own HAND POWER or strength is required together with a little aid from our macho guys!   emoticon

Ladies "meinui" — dispense with the "genteel"; be ‘tom-boy’!  It shall see you through! it sure did for me!

Guys "suike"–  an extension of your hands or perhaps a lap-stool, surely comes ‘handy’       hehe                    I shall say no more… let the suspense hype up!

Let me assure you that the challenges are not as difficult as it seems; besides there are OPTIONS for you to take the easier route.

The walk shall end at Turf City where a variety food is available – Indonesian/Japanese; seafood restaurants, Muslim/Chinese eating houses; pizzas; cafes; etc.
I recommend the famous Curry Garden.  They serve chicken briyani, thosai, dum briyani, masala chicken…
& fish head curry($16) – one of their signature dishes, the half-hour wait was worth it, so SEDAP!

Register here.    :D

*** Those who wish to have the fish head curry(4pax to share) please tell me as I will try to book in advance.

NOTE:
1)  If the mozzies always like you, do bring the insect sprays.

2)  There are no ‘toilet’ facilities & no shelter from raindrops.

3)  Complimentary half-hourly free shuttle bus services is available from Turf City to Clementi & Toa Payoh Interchange.

Stay cool!  Be cool!    emoticon     C ya!

Background of this Trial:

What is this PipeLine Ramble?"

Most of you would know that a water pipeline runs from Johor to Singapore but have anybody thought to trace the route"?

The entire trail of approx 21 km will take around 8 to 9hours! We had intended to introduce this trail in 3 separate segments but after the 1st ramble; I think we will need more time not because of the "km" but to truly enjoy this exciting, challenging trail in 4 segments.  Each part of the route has a different terrain and each opens up a part of Singapore seldom seen. The 1st segment was from Pearl’s Hill to Farrer Road, approx 7 km.

Mary Chan’s daughter Sherry and Micheal’s Wedding, by Mary Chan

Hi everybody. I survived! emoticon

I want to share my experience, joy and fun with everyone.

The wedding was a huge success. We had a very unusual one, starting at my apartment and culminating with a dinner at the Sentosa Spa and Resort Hotel.

I had and still have mixed emotions. I am happy that they are happy, yet sad that I won’t have her with me as often as before. It’s difficult adjusting to not seeing her in the apartment, which seems so empty and quiet, especially now as my second girl has flown to Melbourne for a week. So I am all alone. Sigh.emoticon

On Saturday, I got up at 6.30 am as I couldn’t sleep. emoticonWe had breakfast at 730 and got ourselves ready when the beautician came at 9am to make up the two young ladies. The guests started arriving at 1045 am and by 1100, the apartment was humming with activity as everyone wanted to take a look at and photograph the bride who was in the ‘bridal chamber’ .

The groom then arrived with his 3 escorts, who were dressed in Mandarin outfits! Hahaha. One was his good friend, a Sri Lankan, the other was his best friend, an American and the third was his brother. We were all out on the balcony and staircase landing watching them emerge from the car. We expected something sedate and solemn, but all of a sudden, they broke into a New Zealand haka dance! emoticonTheir yells brought all the neighbours to their windows. It was such a hilarious sight, 4 guys, 2 Irish, an American and a Sri Lankan, dressed in Mandarin hats and outfits, doing the haka.

The dance looked so authentic, it drew applauses from the onlookers.

Then they proceeded to climb all 4 floors up to my apartment, shunning the lift, singing all the way. They even had a huge Chinese fan and some tinfoil percussion instruments. The song had a phrase, something like, "I’ll get down on my knees for you…" and the groom arrived at the top of the stairs and actually got down on his knees when he sang that, so romantic!emoticon

The bridesmaids then got into the teasing of the groom before allowing him to enter to claim his bride, who was still ‘hiding’ in her chamber, giggling with mirth. The bridesmaids, my second daughter, and several other young ladies barred the way and refused to allow him in, asking him to serenade the bride as loudly as he could, until the bride finally agreed that he had sung loudly enough. So he got past the first barrier, easy peasy.emoticon

Then, he had to perform a Chinese dance, wearing a pair of Chinese clogs! His best men were so ingenious. They picked up their clogs and clapped them together like castanets while the groom did a hilarious ‘flamenco’ dance, with lots of stamping. It was such a cosmopolitan mix and so entertaining for the guests, who were all howling with laughter and applauding with appreciation.emoticon

The final demand was a ‘big’ ‘ang pow’, which my daughter demanded gleefully. Guess what? The groom whipped out a really BIG ‘ang pow’ the size of an A2 size paper, with a big double happiness character on it! He had his own back on my second daughter, who was taken aback at the size of the ‘big’ ang pow. Of course, the cash was ‘checked’ to see if it was ‘big’ enough too. It was so much fun.

He was then allowed in. Then the bridal march was played and the bride came slowly out. It was so touching, I think I saw quite a few wet eyes. She was a vision of loveliness and the groom looked at her so adoringly. emoticonWe did a bit of praying, the Buddist way. Then we had the ‘tea ceremony’, when the bride and groom were showered with more ‘ang pows’ and gifts of jewellery for the bride.

Everyone had lunch before leaving to go home to change and get ready for the evening, for the Chinese banquet held at the Sentosa Spa and Resort Hotel. We had a 10 course Chinese fusion cuisine dinner for the relatives and guests. emoticon

The groom and his buddies had something else up their sleeves, halfway through the dinner. They came up with a skit of Sherry and Micheal (pronounced Mi-hall the Irish way) . Micheal portrayed Sherry and one of his best men portrayed him. Micheal had on a black, long haired ‘wig’ and tied a table cloth around his waist for a makeshift skirt and acted the part of a very coy and flirty Sherry. His best man wore a longhaired, orange wig, made from some wooly material and acted as Micheal when he first met Sherry.

The other best man told the story of their courtship while the two drew a lot of laughs and hoots with their   caricature of the bride and groom’s courtship.emoticon

Then there was a toast and speech made by the groom’s father, who actually sang a beautiful Irish song. Some of the guests had a great Chinese ‘yam seng ‘for the couple too. After the dinner, most of the Chinese guests left. Such a pity. They should have stayed. The other guests were reluctant to leave and many spilled out into the beautiful garden after the dinner and carried on chatting and drinking late into the night. It was a totally beautiful evening. The groom’s parents, 2 sisters and brother entertained us with their lovely renditions of Irish songs too. The whole family had such beautiful vocal chords.emoticon

Some of us stayed the night at the hotel and didn’t leave until Sunday evening.

Well, that’s part one of the celebrations. Part two will be in September, in Ireland, where the guest list will be even longer. That will be after my 21 day tour of Europe with my second daughter. I will be staying in Ireland for a week after that.

I’m so looking forward to that.

I feel a little sad as I miss my daughter already, but I console myself that she is staying very nearby, a 5 min walk away. I’m hoping that she’ll come and visit me often. I think the best way is to entice them with home cooked meals don’t you think? Hehe. emoticon
