SHC October monthly gathering at Hans Cafe, Thur Oct 14, 2010

This Post is reassigned to Henry Yip, original author Terence Seah

The next monthly gathering is scheduled for Thurs, Oct 14, 2010.  The venue is Hans Cafe at Great Eastern building, Upper Pickering Street, from 1700 to 2030 hrs.

There has been a suggestion to hold the event at Newton Circus Hawkers centre.  But, as I have not surveyed it yet, we may hold it another day.  If you know of a venue, large enough to accommodate our monthly gathering crowds, do share with us.  The venue should be near a MRT station, has no requirement for us to place fixed headcounts or menu orders, has its own chairs and tables, simple order from its F&B counter and noise tolerant.  Hopefully, we can accommodate the needs of retirees and still working SilverHairs.

The aim of the monthly gathering is to enable social networking among SHCians, for new and old SilverHairs to meet one another.  If you are new, please write an introduction or profile here on this club forum.  This way, others will get to know you.  And if you wish to meet other like-minded members, please indicate in the comments when you register.

I encourage you to register personally on this Post, if you plan to come.  This event is strictly for SHC members only.  Please do not bring friends or associates.  The EO will be announced soon.

If you wish to be the EO, please write to me.  I need some help with registration, hope you can volunteer.

Do register here.

Those who have name tag – PLEASE bring along and wear it throughout the event.

When I was about 18 years old, I use to go camping at Changi Beach just behind where the British Army had a Survival School. behind the school, this stretch of beach was quite secluded. Sometimes we would organize Beach Parties there. By about 2 am, after most of the guests have gone home, a few of us guys would go ‘skinny dipping’. The few girls that were still there would pretend not to watch when we strip but after we get into the water they would shout comments at us from the beach.  I still remember 2 comments even up till today.

  • “Beware of the fishes, they might mistaken yours for a big worm”
  • ‘Don’t shake it more than 3 times…….it is call masturbation”

I am organizing our August  monthly meeting at  Palawan Beach, Santosa.  It will be a Beach Party, but we will not go ‘skinny dipping’ because at our age, I think we will look gross. Even the police would not want us in their station. They will put us straight into the lunatic asylum. I know this will not stop some of you from doing it.

My friend who owns Samudar Indian Restaurant at Palawan beach in Santosa has agreed to let us use the Restaurant on Saturday 21st August.  The restaurant has an alfresco dining area and an aircon dining hall. It can accommodate 200 people.  There are showers on the beach in front of the restaurant and changing facilities nearby.

We will start the party at 3pm. You can swim, play with balls, build sand castle or just enjoy the sea breeze. I need volunteers to organize a few beach games. For those who prefer to stay indoor, you can relax and talk or play board games.   At 7 pm we will have Indian Buffet.  The alfresco dining area which is on a wooden deck and the aircon dinning hall are both very suitable for dancing. You can dance anywhere at any time. You can also do it at the beach but we have to organize sound system outside. You can also pretend to be a teenager on your first date and bring a partner to the bush….there are many dark bushes but tissues are not provided. If you want to sing KOK we have to organize our own portable system because the Restaurant have no KOK licence. We leave the Restaurant at 10pm but you can stay at the beach as long as you like.

Public transport to Palawan Beach is by LRT from VIVO City. It cost $3. Those who drive, pay $7 per car regardless of the number of passengers. The buffet would cost $20 per head.  We will provide tit-bits from the collection of $5 each from those who pay after 31st July.  Those of us who are there in the afternoon should at least buy a drink from the Restaurant to help them pay their staff who would serve you.The restaurant would waive corkage charge for alcoholic drinks we bring. But please don’t bring any other outside food or drinks into their Restaurant.

Dress code will be ‘as little as possible’.  Opportunity for you to show your legs, tummy and butts,  if they are still presentable. I will bring some fig leaves for those who want to be like Adam and Eve.

Now I need the following volunteers

  1. Treasurer to collect the $20 $25 from every participant even if you don’t want to eat the buffet.
  2. Bouncer to throw out those who didn’t pay.
  3. Member registration – Irene Poh has volunteered
  4. Many beach game organizers.
  5. A disco King or Queen to organize the dancing and provide the music CD. They do have a sound system in the Restaurant.
  6. A KOK King/Queen to organize the singing.
  7. And of course, as many ‘gilah’ participants as possible to make it fun.
  8. Also new members, you can come fully clothed to make new friends.
  9. Matchmakers to make sure no one is left alone at this party
  10. Me???…….    I oversee lah.  Girls, remember to wear skimpy clothes, so that I have something to see.

Make your payment to Karen Thio POSB Savings Account number 121-86818-0

Payment before 1st August is $20. From 1st August please pay $25. The last payment accepted is 17th  19th August.

2nd East Zoners’ Get-together

Hi one and all! It’s time again for East Zoners (SHC members staying in the East) to get together for food and friendship bonding.

Day/Date    :  Saturday 4th September 2010

Time            :  2 pm – 6 pm

Venue         :  SIDEWALK TAVERN, 924 East Coast Road

                      http://www.streetdirectory.com/businessfinder/company_detail.php?companyid=136758&branchid=80236

We’ll most probably be having afternoon tea/coffee and like the first time, members pay for their own meals and drinks. :)

This venue has been selected because the owners of this cafe doesn’t mind us making lots of noise and also because there’s no obligation for all of us to order food. Of course, ordering a drink is the least we can do. :)

Deadline for registration : 30th August 2010 (no gatecrashers please)

SHC monthly gathering – Tues, Aug 10, 2010 evening

We just had the D&D in July and would have the Beach Party soon at the end of August.  It’s about time, we have the regular monthly gathering at Hans.  For some, the excitement will be just being back from the kelong trip; for others, it will have been the National Day celebrations just over.  And, for others, the fun will be the beach party at Sentosa.

Time to just meet up, chat, plan your activities, pay back the dues from the World Cup, or maybe think about some charity events before the end of the year.  Maybe, how about making some money for retirement or better still do some planning for retirement.  Starting a business, climbing Mount Everest, go to Bandung, ladies chit chat, going up to HK to meet Geraldine, or going to see Ben Foo in Ho Chi Minh city.  Talk about the D&D or talk about the Prom night.  The regular monthly meeting is just a great way to meet.  What shall we do with the used pyjamas?  Aiyah, no end.  Plan and organise your hobbies group; meet and chat.  Now, for the details.

  • Date:  Tuesday, Aug 10, 2010
  • Time:  1600 to 2030 hrs.  Early session for those who are retired; and later session for those still working.
  • Place:  Hans Cafe at Great Eastern Building, Upper Pickering Street.
  • Charges:  Free, you are free to buy your own F&B at the counter.
  • Dress:  anything.

Other Details:

  • Bring your name tag; If you dont have, we will give you a sticky label to place on your dress/shirt.
  • Registration required.  Strictly for SHC members only.  If your SHC member friend is coming, please encourage him/her to register personally with the correct name.
  • Strictly no politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.

Here’s another dream for next year – a prom night

Some of us do know what is a prom night.  Maybe we dont have prom nights in Singapore.  Most of the time, we hear and see prom night movies from the US and UK.  Remember, Olivia Newton John in Grease?  Remember High School days, end of school term.  Did you come from a co-ed school or all boys or all girls school?  Now, nevermind, if you have not been to one.  So, let’s dream ahead for a new year event.

Well, if we are all over 45 years now, then the popularity of prom nights must be some 30 – 35 years ago.  Gee, wouldnt it be nice if we can have a prom night for SHCians?  I can just imagine the boys would be dressed in striped long sleeves with straps for the pants, in case they drop off.  The hair would be moosed, pointing towards the sky.  The girls would be wearing mini-skirts, 4 inches above the knee.  The hair would be pleated or maybe just pony-tailed.  And, glossy red lip sticks.

Hmm, the idea dreams only.  Ah Ha, entrance tickets would be sold.  Every end-of-term girl or boy would have to sell tickets.  Maybe to raise money for a new school gym.  And if prom nights are what they are supposed to be, the girls have to bring their partners; and the boys have to bring their own partners too.  In the movies, the girls will cry if they cannot find a date.  And, the boys will show off their new dates, if they cannot get the dates they have been wanting to go out with.  Really, cannot come alone.  Tickets are sold in pairs; one printed with a B and the other with a G.

Let me think what kind of songs.  Please help me and everyone to think.  San Francisco, "To sir with Love".  I guess a 70s theme would be exciting.  But, then the songs and music must be danceable.  Not all boys and girls can dance.  For fear of not dancing well or I just dont want to show you how good my dancing is.  Prom nights – a night of rock & roll; and also some waltz.  Guess, enough time for all of us to learn.  12 months to practise.

Food and drinks; I guess we can have plenty of fruit punches.  Still in school, so no alcohol.  Cigarettes, hmm; maybe in the bushes.  Teachers and principals are watching.  Food, aiyah, we may not want to dirty our dresses; so minimal.  But, I think a good dinner spread may also be a good idea.  Well, we have not have a venue in mind; but it could be in the school canteen.

Again, please take this dream in good light.  Yes, we may be SilverHairs, but we can all feel young too.  So, start looking for your date now.  I have no promises that this event will happen.  But if we are to go ahead with this dream, it is very likely I will announce the venue, date and ticket price after the coming D&D.

Look out for movies of prom nights.  And, please share your dreams of a prom night.  (Please do not email me or call me on this event).

I just love this; and I hope you do too.

Terence Seah

Do you have a venue to recommend for future SHC monthly gatherings?

For many moons, we have been using Hans at Great Eastern as our venue for the monthly gatherings.  I think it is still an ideal place.

  1. It can take in any number of people, from 50 to 200 pax.
  2. The venue serves drinks and food, so catering is no issue.
  3. Pax guarantee is not required.
  4. Pretty central, opens every day.

But, are you able to recommend another place, with similar flexibility as Hans?

Chinese New Year Lunch – Sat, 20 Feb 2010 (tent)

Each year, SilverHairsClub has a CNY lunch, where members gt to come together, where possible in traditional new year costumes, have a lunch, exchange greetings, angpows and oranges.  The event is two months away, but it is a good time to get started.

The place can be anywhere in Chinatown, a heartland, but preferably somewhere where the setting is Chinese, and serves traditional Chinese food, maybe tim sum or even just traditional Chinese sweets, cakes and tea.  Seating minimum of 60, with flexibility to extend to 80.  Budget is important, and I think,it should not exceed $19.

So, time to throw the ideas to club members. If you have an idea, simply scream it out.  We need to have some ideas on place, and type of food.  But importantly, an opportunity to meet and exchange "Xin Nian Kuai ler" greetings.    And, of course, I am looking for someone to raise his/her hand to be the EO.  But,not now, let’s go for ideas first.  We close the brainstorm process on 10 Jan 2010.

Year 2010 – Monthly Lunch/Dinner outings

Hello fellow SHCians! Would any of you be keen to go for a food hunt once a month, commencing January 2010?

There are many yummy eateries – restaurants/zhe zhars at coffee shops/hawker stalls spread all over Singapore that serve delicious dishes at very reasonable price. My idea is to have any SHC member recommend a good place to eat, either for lunch or dinner during a chosen day of the month.

Of course, the credo ‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’ will prove challenging but it’ll be interesting to be adventurous once a month.

I suggest Dolly Lim be the EO of this……..:p

Ros

Some events for the first part of 2010

Here’s some ideas for those who are itching to be Event Organisers.  Dolly and myself discussed some ideas over the weekend.  If you have not organised an event before for SHC members, consider fulfilling this itch.  Also, a good opportunity to make an old dream come true.

  1. a Joget event, very much a popular dance in Malaysia.  Very often, performed at cultural festivals, wedding celebrations and social functions.
  2. a Prom night, good old school days
  3. Our annual Chinese New Year lunch
  4. March/annual D&D
  5. and maybe a Valentine event.

Like to give it a go?

This gathering also coincide with the Flea Mart in the same venue from 1.00-7.00pm. The badminton group will have their game from 1.00-4.00pm. Depending on the responses, the mahjong session will start from 10.00am and end at 6.00pm. So folks, the facilities are booked  for you, do avail yourselves!

Venue: Safra Mount Faber – Multi-purpose Hall (Air-conditioned)

http://www.safra.sg/data/resources/images/MF%20Clubhouse/MF_getting_there.jpg

Monthly Gathering: 5.00-9.00pm

The program for the night will includes karoeke singing and impromptu line and social dancing. There is something about SHCians, most of them like to dance. It is a good form of relaxation and having fun together! Music will be played throghout the night while in some corner new friends and old will chit-chat away.

At the last gathering we have a fantastic night!. Though it was sardine-packed, we enjoyed ourselves. When most of the members left for home, there was a group of die-hard members who dance the night away when the music was played!

Those who have booked a table for the Flea mart, do indicate here whether you are staying for the Monthly Gatherings.

Monthly cum Pre ‘Chong-Chew-Jie’ Gathering – 17 Sept’09

Hello SHCians,

For the month of September gathering, we have the honour to host it at Gillman Heights upon the kind gesture of Jacqueline Han, who make it possible by arranging the necessary logistics.  emoticon

This Gillman Heights Condo although aging in appearance (and severely need a coat of fresh paint) has wide open space with lots of matured trees and greenery. Other plus points are the "olympic length" swimming pool, and large wading pool. Also a good-size playround surrounded by greenery.  For those want to have a swim before gathering, they are most welcome to do so.  Ample parking spaces for car owners.  Though not near to any MRT but easily accessible by bus.

Info for Gillman Heights location, and public transport:
Buses to Alexandra Road: 51,  93, 97, 100, 166, 197.
Buses to Depot Road: 57, 175, 195

Jacq had even offered to provide free flow of her famous (self-proclaimed) pandan tea. It is a refreshing iced drink, freshly brewed from pandan leave and tea with sugar added. Pandan leave contains anti-oxidants, and is highly recommended to counter the effects of heatiness caused by fried stuff and spicy food. emoticon

Another factor being that come November 2009, Gillman Heights, as it is, will no longer exist. Yep, it is to be torn down, and redeveloped into something else.  So come to have look before it gone lor…emoticon

We never before had a monthly gathering at Condo’s function room but decided to give this a try, hence fellow SHCians come and support this gathering

We can have a Pre ‘Chong-Chew Jie’ celebration and I will sponsor two boxes of mooncakes to get these going but only 1 or 2 yolks kind 1 hor…  emoticon  And Terence is going to bring along another 2 boxes of mooncakes all way from Taiwan hor…

Function room is big enough host at least 60-80paxs and we can hv some light music accompany us thru’ the nite.  To make the gathering more interesting, Terence will bring along the wireless mic with amplifier set.  Anyone considering bringing along a portable DVD lar so that we can some singing emoticon

For this gathering, as we are thinking of getting mini buffet (ard $7) hence, registration is a must for better planning for food, so come and register early…

So much of lee lee lo lo, the September monthly gathering is confirmed to be scheduled as follows:

  • Date : 17 September 2009, Thursday
  • Time : 5.00pm to 9.30pm
  • Venue : Gillman Heights Condo (Function Room B), at the junction of Depot/Alexandra Road.

The Flea Mart is back cum the Monthly Gathering-October 31, 2009

Dear folks,

When we decided on the Flea Mart, i kaypo want to include the Games Day and include Mahjong competition but it just didn’t tickle your bones! Then we got the idea how about having a Carnival Day and having a jam session, again we have lukewarm response. Mati lah how to go ahead we have fixed cost to worry about! The caterer insists on one hundred pax for us to enjoy a good rate, now I ‘gabra’, cannot sleep and started counting sheep, still no help!

Next day I got a bright idea, how about Flea Mart and Monthly Gathering? No need to worry about food catering, we got Ya Kun to the rescue!

So die die this event is on and I apologised to fellow members and those who booked a booth I gave up too easily. I wanted to run and hide and go into hibernation, but have nowhere to hide! Now you all know why the EO always want to bang his head on the wall!

So, dear folks mark this day on your calendar and come give us your support!

Memory

Two year ago, SHC had it’s first overnight & overseas event :

2D/1N – SHC Overnight Gathering @ Sijori Resort, Batam.

The idea was originally poached by Terence but relegated to my charge simply because I volunteered to help him with the logistic.  And so, I became the EO of this event.

On the morning of 07.07.07 – about 40 of us SHCians met at HarbourFront for this trip.  It was a very wet morning, raining meow meow & woof woof but it didn’t dampen our spirit despite the fact that some of us met for the very first time.

Two years on, many of these trippers became solid supporters of SHC.  Some even became EOs for SHC events & activities – ad hoc or regular basis.

Looking at the date today, got me all nostalgic.  I not only have had alot of fun but also got to know many fun loving gals during this trip.  I also found a buddy in Dolly & great friendship in Yew Kwong.

I wonder if others, who have gone on this trip, felt the same way,…. experience something special…. or otherwise…..

…… Willing to share?

….and thanks to Yew Kwong and Terence, here are photos for your viewing :

“BOLLYWOOD NITE”

“BOLLYWOOD NITE”

Greetings to all SHC members,
My apologies for the delay on the "Bollywood Nite" event.
I eventually managed to find a good venue called “SITARA Restaurant & Lounge” which is located at Serangoon Road, just opposite MUSTAFA Centre. It is a 5minutes walk from Farrer Park MRT station and there are several buses going to the venue. There is a car park available for the patrons of the restaurant.  The charges will be $25 per pax  (minimum 30 pax and max 70 pax) for the whole lounge which comes with a DJ, music and dance floor. The charges include a North Indian buffet (Veg and non–veg dishes) and with a free flow of soft drinks.

The only problem is that we can only use it from 4 to 9pm as it will be open to the public after 9pm. Members who want to stay on after, will be welcomed to do so and will need to purchase their own drinks. I will post the buffet menu online by Thursday.

In the meantime, please feel free to give your comments and feedbacks if any. I would also appreciate if you revert on your interest for this event so that I can proceed to organize it upon getting 30 members and more. I further propose that we hold this event on a Saturday, sometime in July or Aug 09, so as to accommodate to the early timing offered by the restaurant management.

Dolly, would appreciate if you could help me check our events calendar for an appropriate date for this event.  Once the date is confirmed, I would like to start collecting our individual shares and book the lounge in advance.

I would also like to set up an organizing committee so as to make this event a success. Positions for Secretary, Treasurers and Games Organisers are open. If you would like to assist me and organise the event, please email me at gengha_n@yahoo.com.    Awaiting your favourable replies.
Thank you.

NAME TAG ANYONE????

Hi all SHCians’,

Just wanna say a big THANK YOU to you all for making me so welcome today at the SHC Monthly Gathering.  Initially I was so worried like how to ‘gel’ myself in but thanks to Alice Seah, then Lee, then Kim then ‘Pao Kung’ then one after another, wow! I am certainly amazed how the group can just get to know each other so smoothly.

I indeed had a great time today and am looking forward to another gathering soon.  A confession to make was that I did not bring along my name tag as I thought I would just wait for a blank sticker to write on, we had, but, kinda abit small la….so I asked Terence if I could make one for myself and was told that I could, thanks to Terence……SO, I am in the midst of designing one for myself…anyone need help??? I can do up something for you all…..you can let me know what is your preferred theme , eg. if you are a sporty person, then I can design something link to sports, or if you are a $$$$ person, then I can link it with a BIG DOLLAR NOTE on it, and etc etc etc la….You all very smart people, so would know what I am trying to tell you……ok???

Thanks and regards,

Anne Chua
